3 out of 5 eggsExpected more from a premium board

Pros: 1. Gorgeous Red LEDS!
2. Matte black circuit board
3. The Live Update software helped a bit with installing latest drivers.

Cons: 1. I paid $300 for this motherboard. You guys at MSI couldn't even design the PCI-e slots with some space in between so my SLI configuration has some room to breathe??? Why does the Gaming 7 board have that and the Gaming 9 doesn't??? My top GTX 970 hits 82 degrees with 90% fan usage while gaming.
2. Too many audio drivers.
3. The KillerEthernet software is forced on you. I have 50/50 speeds with Verizon Fios. The software was throttling my download speeds even when I was not gaming. Had to find a standalone LAN driver work around through forums.

Other Thoughts: My main issue with this board is the PCI-e slots placement. Other than that, it's an absolute beauty to look at!

Some of you might be asking "why don't you use 1st and 3rd PCI-e in my SLI configuration so I have room in between?" I can't because the mobo will let me change the speed for the PCI-e slots. It drops to x8/x8/x4 when it detects two GPUs. SLI will not run on a x4 slot.

5 out of 5 eggsSo smexy

Pros: Great looking board. The red and black theme matches my case setup.
Bios is easy to navigate.
Drivers and Bios updates are easy to install.

Cons: Loud click when you power on the computer. But, it's apparently normal according to MSI so I won't take away any eggs.

Other Thoughts: A lot of people are complaining about the conflicting audio drivers, just install one and you'll be fine. I used Live Update to get the initial drivers installed then plan to manually install any updates in the future. Also, I wouldn't use Live Update to update the Bios. Seems to risky. Flashing the updates in the Bios itself is quick and easy.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: Everything works. BIOS is easy to navigate/use.

Cons: Driver installs. The utility used for installing the drivers contains multiple audio drivers, which is expected. Problem is that installing the sound blaster driver included with mine caused a compatibility issue that resulted in the audio device turning itself off. Once I uninstalled said sound blaster driver, the problem went away. -1 egg for unnecessary confusion. The utility should be able to determine which drivers are needed by a particular model.

Other Thoughts: Some others have mentioned difficulties with installing the WiFi module. It isn't really difficult, just something unusual. Improved documentation might clear things up for those reporting difficulties. In my view this wasn't a big enough problem to subtract an egg.

5 out of 5 eggsBoots on the ground.

Pros: The board itself seems to be well made with all the advertising on its suit of a variety of features it offers to insure its longevity. Very high over clocking profiles and great tech to match. This is my first MSI motherboard and I love it. It is one of the more/most expensive Z97 boards but with its feature sweet its justifiable to top end users.

FYI the wireless drop in option was weird to say the least in that you need to take the shroud off the IO and pop it into place then secure it with a screw from the shroud when you re-install it to the board. Wireless functionality is great as both antenna have magnetic feet that I used to stick on the side panel of me case.

Cons: Upon first arrival and setup I began to play with its settings via UEFI/software and began to find an unstable combo of settings. The chip I bought came with turbo boost, and EISPT (Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology) I disabled these because I wanted all cores (Logical and physical) running consistently at the desired clocks and perimeters I set all the time (without overclocking). I have since updated the UEFI and the issue has gone away. Just make sure you take advantage of MSI Live update 6. Scan the system with its tool and it will find all the latest drivers and Bios files for you. With all updates installed it's been running like a champ ever since.

Other Thoughts: I7 4790k @4Ghz with H100i and after market fans plus controller Stays at 28c
G.skill Trident X 2400Mhz @2400Mhz
MSI Gaming 9AC Z97 with update 1.5 to UEFI (comes with 1.0)
Corsair HX 850watt PSU
Corsair force GT 240gb Boot drive. (All drives are automatically set to AHCI upon detection)
Windows 7 x64
Sapphire R9 290X Vapor X edition GPU

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Motherboard

Pros: This motherboard is one of the best right now for gamers. It has the whole package. The overclocking OC genie is such a great addition. So simple and so fast. The Killer E2200 is just incredible for streaming, downloading, uploading, just great. Plenty of USB 3.0 and the sound is just as advertised, loud, crisp and clear. The BIOS is so well crafted, it even shows you what is plugged and where. This is such a nice motherboard you better get a great case that displays it proudly.

Cons: As you might have heard. The wifi sounds great and all, but it is a pain to install. I for one have not been able to install it. I tried everything. pre-test it, mounted it, un-mounted it, drivers updated, but it just shows like it is not connected at all. It basically was one of the reasons why I got this motherboard. I am not saying that every motherboard is like that, because for some people they just plugged everything and it worked, but not for me. I will be contacting MSI to let them know and probably resolve the issue and I will keep you guys posted.

Other than that this motherboard is just amazing.

Other Thoughts: A bit loud clicking noise when you power the motherboard but it is not going to pop any ears by any chance. I think it is okay and for what I know it is a confirmation that it is running like a charm.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Board! Horrible Customer Service! Wast of Time and Money.

Pros: Board works great and functions as advertised. The OC genie is awesome and the O.C. control software is as easy as it gets. The Killer E2200 is nice and the wifi is an added plus.

Cons: The board that was shipped from new egg would not boot. When I called to have it replaced they did not honor the product they sold to me. The rep was not friendly, courteous, or sensitive to the fact that i spent top dollar for a "new" board that was defective. He was quick to state that this was a manufactures issue and not New Eggs. I think that when you buy something from a merchant and the item they give you is defective it is their problem and should stand behind the merchandise they are selling and not push it off and rinse their hands of the situation. On top of that I had to pay another 50 dollars to ship it back to MSI to get a replacement 3 weeks later. Once I got the board back from MSI i went to install the Cooler Master Eisberg 240L water cooling system that was purchased from New Egg. This items was defective also. Again I called to get poor customer service and refusal to return the item. The first question that was asked of me was " why did it take you so long to report the issue" First of all that is not relevant to the fact i was shipped damaged merchandise from New Egg and I would have known sooner if the board that was shipped originally was working properly. Once I found that the board was bad I did not proceed to open the cooler. By the end of our conversation I asked to talk to a supervisor and was put on hold for 20 minutes to be asked to send a picture of the item. I waited 30 minutes for a rep to call me back to hear I do not see anything wrong with the cooler radiator. I had to then send another set of pictures. Then I had to wait another 45 minutes to be told my supervisor is going to send it to upper management to see if they will honor the return. I should be called back with in 24 hours. Needless to say I as never called back and am guessing I will have to do another RMA. So here goes more money out of my pocket. With the added return costs I could have bought a better processor or other upgrades for my build. Many dollars worth of usless merchandise was bought in return is going ot cost me more than intended. Considering I spent 90% of money (and did not go cheap on anything) with them for this build, the customer service would be a little more professional.

Other Thoughts: Worst customer service I have had in my life. This was suppose to be fun and exciting. Instead it was stressful and horrible experience.

2 out of 5 eggsAudio is trash

Pros: Wasn't DOA...

Cons: Insanely loud "clicking" noises when you boot / reboot. Not sure if this is normal but its quite alarming, I've just learned to live with it.

Coming from a Z77 Sabertooth it lacked Fan connectors in my opinion.

The onboard audio is absolutely trash (and very confusing, 3 drivers? Seriously guys?) I see claims that it is an ASIO 2.2 soundcard yet, in Ableton Live it is not ASIO and suffers from the same latency issues as any other soundcard, still have to use ASIO 4 ALL, which then once the track is exported, sounds nothing like it does in the DAW, Audio is distorted, very hot signal. I have turned off all settings from the myriad of audio drivers and software that you have to use, yet audio is still distorted.

I'd avoid this board for the horrendous implementation of 3 soundcards.

3 out of 5 eggsz97 gaming 9

Pros: Nice looking, has on board red leds, I/o panel is all black and well crafted. has wifi.

Cons: Cumbersome wifi module, audio software is lacking, lack of space when installing 2 video cards (evga 760s here)

Other Thoughts: Well I bought this when it first came out as an upgrade to my z77a-gd65, I kind of wished I had of either went with a different board manufacture or waited for the z97-xpower. I bought this board as I am an MSI fan, but so far this board hasn't rewarded me, 1st negative is the board is bragged for having the best on board audio, however if it is it sorely is lacking in the software to utilize it,2nd using 2 video cards is tight, with 2 evga gtx 760's I have about 3mm of space I haven't gamed yet so idk what the temps will be but they said the board had extra spacing to accommodate this when in fact is doesn't, trying to use the 3rd pci slot ends in being unable to enable the sli ,again I bought this board for the so called extra room. 3rd like others the wifi module is a stressful ordeal and while I was able to install it, it was still a pain.
Now while I was able to get my raid 5 array up and yes there are 6 sata 3 port by intel and 2 more by asmedia, which was part of the reason for the purchase, the lack of audio software, and room for vid cards along with an annoying occasional "99" system hang leaves this 300.00 dollar board with a sour taste for me, maybe 230 would be more fair.
ATM I think I may end up re-installing my creative audio card as I think the software is better.
sorry MSI I have not been impressed
