4 out of 5 eggsMSI Z97 Gaming 7 review

Pros: The first Z97 gaming 7 motherboard was completely dead on arrival but thanks to Neweggs excellent customer care, I received a replacement board within a week. The motherboard itself is durable and feels well made. If you are into showing off your build, the black and red accents are really nice and would fit well with a lot of color schemes. The gaming 7 has a lot of ports (SATA, USB3.0, etc.) and it even has a M.2 port (which is a really nice way to save space in your PC and to have a super fast boot drive for Windows).

Cons: I dont have many cons for this board except that the BIOS is a little clunky and the menus could be presented better. Also, DO NOT update the BIOS using their update utility in Windows!!! It has not happened to me but having read a lot of forums, other people have noticed that updating the BIOS from Windows will brick their system. MSI needs to remove this feature from their update utility.

Other Thoughts: After having the motherboard for a month now, I would probably have either bought the Z97 gaming 5 to save some money or just bought the gaming 9, which has integrated bluetooth and wifi.

5 out of 5 eggsLoving it

Pros: Awesome looking board. Very good manual. I like the bios, you can navigate with a mouse and usb wireless mouse and keyboard worked without a hitch when I turned it on.
Feels solidly build, transistors or whatever they are don't stick out far so theres less worry when manhandling the board. Cool matte black board with red accents and ferrari looking logo looks great. I bought MSI's GTX 770 video card as well and the 2 look great together following the same color scheme.
Software utilities seem really well done as well. Command center gives you great fan control for cpu and system (with WPM fans or whatever theyre called).
My build is stable and fast and this board helped make that happen!

Cons: I had one minor hiccup with audio. The realtek drivers needed to be uninstalled and reinstalled. I'm pretty sure this was a windows 7 issue but I figured I'd mention it. Other than that building and running has been a dream. I'm one happy gamer.

1 out of 5 eggsBricked By MSI BIos Update

Pros: Easy to install and get up and running.

Cons: MSI has a utility that scans the computer once a week for updates. It reported that there was a firmware update for my bios. I installed it and afterwards the computer would not boot.

Other Thoughts: MSI support was not able to help me. I'm waiting for either Newegg or Google Trusted Purchase to refund my money. I no longer trust MSI products.

5 out of 5 eggsReview Update After Some Time

Pros: At first this board was a dream. Easy set up. Everything worked. Then I was annoyed by terrible whine through my subwoofer when moving the mouse. Nothing I did would fix it. I even tried both the internally motherboard-powered mode, and the externally-powered mode via power supply. Didn't matter. I was pretty discouraged and considered trying a different motherboard or power supply. Then my ssd showed up that was to be my system drive and I decided to do a clean install from scratch on it. This time, I decided NOT to install the SoundBlaster bundled software to see if that made any difference, and just use the latest version of the Realtek drivers/software since that's all my old PC had, and I never noticed the mouse-noise. But I was not impressed with the sound quality like this, and the noise was still there. I thought since the SoundBlaster version sounded better, and the noise was the same either way, I reinstalled the SoundBlaster software. Lo and behold. THE NOISE IS GONE! Even at extreme volume. Nice and clean. I literally dropped my jaw. I imagine that doing a full install of all other software including motherboard and Windows updates (including 8.1 and all updates) before installing the SoundBlaster software was key in killing the noise. The difference was so impressive it literally turned my whole attitude around about this project.

Cons: The only con about this board was fixed when I stumbled upon the above fix.

Other Thoughts: Hope this information helps someone.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Board

Pros: Cool cosmetic. Worked without issue with 4790K and Gskill 2133 DDR3. I noticed more audio punch and fidelity when compared to my old build from 2008 (which had Realtek chip of the time). Is it noise-free? No. Would a soundcard be much of an improvement? Probably not.

Cons: The SoundBlaster software is not very good but it does what I need it to. Some of the other bundled utility programs are probably not needed. I'll likely uninstall a few of them. I wish the LEDs were all red. The MSI logo is white, the trace for the sound solution is red, the mobo LEDs are blue.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Motherboard!

Pros: Excellent motherboard, never gave me any issues. I am using an i7-4790k with this motherboard. I have never overclocked in my life before, and this board made it so easy to experiment and find my way around it. I am currently running my CPU at 4.6 GHz with 1.27 Vcore, and I also have settings for 4.749 GHz at 1.32V, both of which are stable. It is probably overkill for what I need, but it is a great motherboard. BIOS is easy to navigate once you are used to it and settings are easy to change.
Also, tonnes of USB 3.0 ports on the back, as well as support for front USB 3 ports.
Also the aesthetics are great. I usually don't care for aesthetics but this motherboard made me regret buying a case with no window :D

Also onboard M.2 support is nice. Cannot wait to use it. SATA6GB/s is nice, but M.2 can transparently double the bandwidth.

It is important to note that you cannot use two of the SATA ports if the M.2 port is in use!!

Power, reset and OC genie button directly on motherboard is nice.

Cons: The only thing I didn't like was the 3 fan headers. There are 2 headers for the CPU fan and 3 for additional case fans. For an ATX board I expected more. My case supports up to 7 fans, so its annoying I can't get optimal airflow without a fan-header splitter, which is a cheap solution.

Onboard audio could be a little clearer, but I'm planning to get a sound card, and its not too bad meanwhile.

Doesn't give me a back massage :|

Other Thoughts: Totally recommend for enthusiasts and gamers. Amazing motherboard for overclockers as well.
The heatsinks at the top of the motherboard are taller than they look, so if you want overhead fans, make sure there is clearance above the motherboard. I actually cannot mount a 140mm fan above that spot due to that heatsink.

5 out of 5 eggsMSI Z97-Gaming 7

Pros: Great board for gaming and overclocking works well with my I7 4770K

Cons: only one small thing so far i wish the bios was 1080p it looks like **** on my 27inch not worth taking an egg off

Other Thoughts: Looks great through my case window

4 out of 5 eggsDoes what it's supposed to

Pros: Fancy color scheme, LED's and lights are nice, Power/Reset/OC Genie button on the board itself, Slots for all the hardware and accessories one could want, nice graphical bios. (optional you can still use normal looking bios if you want) Seems like a lot of thought went into the placement of inputs for power, fans, sata connections, usb etc... Overall It's a great mobo.

Cons: A bit pricey, My video card (MSI GTX 770) blocks the awesome looking MSI badge on the MOBO heatsink, the one with the MSI LED that lights up and the dragon badge, It's like one of the best features in terms of looks on the mobo, but it covered by large video cards regardless of which GPU slot you use on the mobo.
The OC Genie seems a bit like a gimick, maybe I'm doing something wrong? I have an i7 4790k, its not yet overclocked but I run it in turbo 4.4ghz... I tried running it with OC Genie and it seemed to slow the CPU down if anything... I tried with OC Genie on and the cpu in Turbo... then with the turbo turned off as well. In neither of my test runs did the CPU break 4.4ghz, but it seemed to drop below 4.4ghz to about 4.0-4.1ghz more often than when OC Genie was turned off.
Seems like I'm doing something wrong?

2 out of 5 eggsI'm extremely surprised and disappointed

Pros: -Looks nice
-Very very nice BIOS menu, it felt like an OS of it's designed to be and overclocking BOSS.

Cons: -Either my board was defective or this board VERY low CPU voltage

Other Thoughts: The second I go my board and processor (4790K) I went straight to work at overclocking it. All the overclocking benchmarks out show people using crazy high voltages (1.95 vCore and 2.5v input voltage, defaults being 1.25v core and ~1.8 input volatge). Running at crazy temperatures over 100C. Going higher only preventing the system instead of damaging anything.

I didn't even reach half of that, for 5.2GHz at 1.5v core and 1.95v input my system went through ~2hrs of stress test just fine with temps bellow 30C (CPU AND mobo) at all times. I boost it up to 5.3GHz with1.52v core and 1.975v input and then BAM.

The mobo fries!

This better of not done anything to the rest of my equipments, sub-par mobo deserved to fry
