4 out of 5 eggsMSI Z97 Gaming 7

Pros: Of course we start with the pros...
Beautiful!!! Looks wonderful with red G Skill Ram
Great configuration!!!
Easy to install!!!
Excellent Bios and really easy to navigate

Cons: The SLOW MODE BOOT SWITCH!!!
Had a problem with my cpu not running over 800 mhz...Multiplier would not change in either direction so I was just about to RMA this board. Luckily my nerd buddies found the only thing on the net that had any reference to the switch. Found that mine was enabled from the factory. Disabled it and it cruised at 3.2 and the multiplier was finally unlocked.
I read thru the manual a few times to make sure I wasn't missing something and no where in there does it say the slow mode boot switch will force your computer to run at 800 mhz.

TECH SUPPORT
Accused me of overclocking.. How exactly can I overclock if the cpu is running at 800 MHz and the multiplier wont change? Then they blamed my CPU... The fix is above...
They were more than happy to accuse me of overclocking and not provide ANY potential fixes or problem resolution.
Nastygram submitted but I can assure you that all the "unsatisfied" surveys go straight in the recycle bin.

Other Thoughts: I love this board.. it is beautiful and wonderfully easy to work with once all the factory preset switches are in the correct position. If I had other MSI products and had dealt with the incompetent tech support prior to this, I probably would've gone with Asus or Giga for this build.

Ive read other reviews about the QC and I think this is the case... I understand they need to test everything at the factory but there needs to be some measures put in to place that can fix issues like this. Im dropping one egg because the product is great but the company and tech support is lacking.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board!

Pros: Dual BIOS handy for getting you out of borked O/C attempts. Lots of configuration options. Great build quality. Has worked flawlessly with all my equipment and peripherals.

Cons: Even after the latest firmware updates sometimes the UEFI will forget the boot order of my devices even during a normal reboot and will happen more often with a power failure. Running two 248GB SSDs in RAID0 for OS. Doesn't happen enough to be a major pain as I usually leave my box on 24/7, but can be a major pain if you have the computer set up for remote access and you have to reboot the box for software updates or installs and this glitch occurs which causes the machine to stop on a blue-screen error. Maybe on next update it will be fixed. Can live with it otherwise.

Other Thoughts: Great board for the money, but that boot order glitch is one minor gotcha.

3 out of 5 eggsMostly Good Board, Really Bad BIOS & Software

Pros: Strong construction, good cabling format, capable of strong overclocking, stable power delivery, components running cool. All heat sinks are attached with decent thermal paste for the average user.

Updating the BIOS with MSI's M Flash is quick and relatively easy.

The Sound Blaster sound system lives up to the suggestions of the large chip and capacitor array on the board. Using a $300 pair of Sennheiser headphones I got absolutely beautiful sound on a range of music genres and crisp contrast in games as well. Realtek 1150 and Soundblaster on this board are a wicked combo for music enthusiasts.

Cons: I don't know when it came to be a standard that gaming boards would come with a slow boot switch, much less one that comes pre-flipped. We struggled for hours trying to get our I7 4790k up to its 4 GHz rated speed because of this and in fact some BIOS issues.

The BIOS saving mechanism is unstable or perhaps downright defective in this board. It took three attempts to get turbo boost to correctly work and bring the chip up to 4.2 and 4.4 GHz under AIDA64, and this is coming from a long time overclocker. MSI, get your software/firmware QC up to snuff. Beyond this, it took several CMOS clears to get adaptive voltage and power stepping turned off to begin tweaking the CPU and Ring Bus ratios for overclocking. If you save a BIOS, chances are you'll have to save it twice with a CMOS clear before it takes hold. This is unacceptable. The CD which came with the board installed all the desired drivers up front, but then when we installed Windows updates and included our wireless driver for the Netis WH2190 USB antenna, every single MSI software package broke on the spot, forcing us to do a fresh install of MSI's drivers. Again, unacceptable.

The M Flash utility does have a major flaw. It does not allow you to browse your USB or have the BIOS file in a folder unlike in ASUS' equivalent system. Again, really MSI? Your components are so solid but your software and firmware is just awful to work with!

My one hardware complaint is about you sticking the USB 3 header between your front panel power connector and the front panel media connector. Are you joking? Are you attempting to antiquate older cases? I can't find another board maker who does this either.

Other Thoughts: We pushed our 4790K past 5GHz on this board, so it can handle just about whatever you throw at it. If you get better software or firmware experiences than we did, consider yourself blessed.

Sorry MSI. You didn't deliver a truly great product.

4 out of 5 eggsUps and Downs

Pros: Visually appealing. Solid construction. Great onboard technology (sound blaster , LAN , USB 3.0, etc). Did I mention already how visually appealing / beautiful it looks? Over clocking is a breeze, both in the bios menu or a physical button on the board. I thought that was a nice touch. Power and reset buttons also on the board, this helped quiet a bit during the install / set up portion of my build. BIOS is awesome. I like that I can choose between the old school style and the GUI, although oddly enough I preferred the GUI. BIOS is awesome. The packaging / visual display of the packing / contents of the box is awesome. Whoever is on their marketing / visuals team deserves a big raise. They also include anything and everything you could need, plus some neat little extras that I won't point out because the surprise is part of the fun.

Cons: Where do I start? 24 pin power connector would not for the life of me (or a ton of folks on the internet either) go all the way in. LOTS of skilled force too, and no go. I did not want to risk breaking anything, but I've heard that the only way to get it to stick all the way in. That's redick. It is running, as I'm typing this, and it's no all the way in. Oh well I guess right? Tons and tons of little software / hardware issues too. Don't sleep the computer, it won't want to wake up or the GPU won't want to wake up. I've heard this is an intel issue, but needs to be stated here none-the-less. When using the Killer LAN stuff (run internet explorer, install the IE version of flash, this will allow you to run that speed test that it keeps asking for on start up but can't complete because you don't have flash on a brand new computer build). If this was part of the software, they should have included flash. Also, way too much bloatware. Intel / MSI software out the yin yang. BUT that shouldn't be a big con considering you can and should choose what / which software to install. When updating the Killer LAN stuff, be aware you may have to install manually after it "updates" which for me, just uninstalled the driver all together. When running the MSI live update, choose the option that downloads AND installs, otherwise you'll need to install on your own after it downloads it. Minor issue yes, but not as efficient as I'm used to from MSI. The bios did not want to run on my hdmi monitor. It wouldn't display properly. I have a dvi cable, so I used that for set up, etc. However, even that didn't display perfectly. 2-5% of the screen was not shown. It didn't prevent use, but again... not what I've come to expect from MSI. When I think MSI, I think 100% perfection. I've used them since I was building rigs as a kid. Things have apparently changed for the worse since a decade or so ago. It was more work than I'm used to with builds, and I didn't like that the 24pin connector wouldn't plug in all the way. Not to mention all the random debug codes that were thrown at me before I got it all working correctly.

Other Thoughts: Minor hardware / software quirks aside, this is a great board. Solid performance, quality build, good onboard tech, easy overclocking, good looking (if not somewhat quirky) BIOS, lots of options, beautiful design that is probably the best looking board I've ever seen powered on, and a great all-around gaming board. I'm happy with my purchase, although I feel like more could have been done to prevent some minor issues. During the build, I was kicking myself for going with MSI due to all the minor frustration, but after it was done ... I felt a little differently. I almost gave this board 3 eggs... almost.

5 out of 5 eggsOverclocks easily, fast, reliable

Pros: Easily overclocks my i7-4970K without any issues. It automatically overclocked it to 4.2Ghz without me telling it to. Runs cool and so far I haven't had any issues.

Cons: Bios is outdated and can be a pain to update, but after I updated it, it's fine. The apps that come with this board, ie MSI live update is dumb. It's trying to tell me Sound Blaster Cinema 2 is outdated, but I have the current version. My version is 1.00.11 when it's trying to get me to update to 1.00.07.

5 out of 5 eggsFeatured packed motherboard at incredible price

Pros: This thing is loaded with nice features that appeal to a huge range people, though I imagine gamers will benefit the most. I came straight from a 5 year old motherboard with a nehalem i7, and despite asus' reputation for great reliable mobos, msi really handed it to them this time. I think I paid about the same price for both mobos, and this motherboard is definitely the winner (nothing against asus, this just a great mobo).

1. OC genie is probably one of the coolest things to come around in recent years.
2. I will never buy another mobo that doesn't have a debug LED. If you turn your computer on after installing this mobo and nothing comes up on your screen, DO NOT panic. I had this happen to me, but I would have confused for a lot longer if not for the wonderful little debug LED.
3. MSI's suite of applications is really well made, and BIOS is really easy to navigate.
4. Having the dual bios (blue/green) is incredibly convenient if you mess up

Cons: 1. The red-black blocks around the cpu are made of metal, which is nice, as I assume they absorb a decent amount of heat, but the design has some sharp edges, and can make installing a cpu sort of difficult. Be careful around those.

2. The BIOS is super nice, but the included UEFI stuff is hard to figure out for someone new to all of that. When you arrange your boot items, it may best for newcomers to just leave UEFI items out.

3. It may just be me, but this mobo has some funky behavior when it comes to shutdowns and sleep. It will randomly boot or wake up for no reason in the middle of the night. Not too big of an issue, but it is weird.

Other Thoughts: I really like Asus. I'm a long time customer of their's, mainly because their mobos have always been reliable and I have a certain level of 'trust' in the brand. I went with this mobo though because Asus's Z97 offerings were a little more paltry in my opinion, and skimped on the PCIe slots, which was pretty important to me. The Z97-Pro (?) has great ratings however, and is probably the comparable board here. I chose the MSI however mainly because the reviews were so similar but this board seemed like it had more of the features i wanted (and now probably can't live without).

Also, there wasn't a picture of it in Neweggs item listing (there probably needs to be), and so, I was totally unaware that there was an LED line-string thing that separated all of the sound advertised sound blaster/cinema stuff. It looks really cool, but I had no idea that was there. If you're building a system and trying to keep a color palette in mind, make sure 'red' is part of that, as there's not going to be many ways to cover that up, and you can't turn it off as far as I can tell. It is subtle however, and runs along the back side and the bottom, so it's not going to be a prominent feature, but you will definitely notice it in a window.

Still, in addition to that, I have to say, this motherboard is probably one of the prettiest mobos I have ever seen. MSI has gone and actually given the silicon a 'finish' to make it less shiny and more matte, which actually works to great effect, in my opinion. It reduces reflections from case lights and makes components pop a little bit more, as the mobo seems more sunken into the case.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic MOBO!

Pros: I traded up from a 4 year old amd mobo for this and I'll never look back. This motherboard has opened my eyes to the intel world and it's beautiful. I love the OC Genie. I paired this MOBO with a 4690k and they run beautifully together. The mobo is super easy to install and comes with a nice disk for your drivers. Everythings labelled and the manual even gives you videos if need be to help you connect all the wiring.

Cons: I had to reinstall my OS to get the mobo to boot into my HDD, but that was my own fault for not doing research and realizing I had to change settings before installing it. So definitely do that if you change from amd to intel or vice versa.

Other Thoughts: I read many things against MSI but still decided to give them a try because this mobo got great reviews, and I don't see one thing wrong with the device. For the value, it's great, and newegg shipped it all nicely and I didn't have any issues with anything. Very pleased with everything during this process.
