Pros: easy to use BIOS, setup of mobo easy to do

Cons: puts out some heat in case not sure if video card or power supply or mobo/cpu not risking overclocking had to turn overclocking off it got so warm in my steel tower

5 out of 5 eggsNew rig up and running in only 5 hours

Pros: First off, I got the parts yesterday afternoon, assembled the PC, installed and updated Win8.1, and was playing some steam games after dinner. Very quick build.

I'll break the pros into categories.

1) Aesthetics - The board looks great. It's a light black (maybe really dark brown), and the way the traces and pad printing is done make the board look very smooth. The dragon logo and "dragon claw" heatsinks are a nice touch, too. There are many mobo's with $140-$150 price tags and very similar features. The look definitely gives it an edge.

2) Connectors - Everything you need for a high tier build. Plenty of SATA ports, 2 PCI-E3.0 slots for SLI/Crossfire, 8 USB ports on the back, 1 internal USB3.0 header for a front panel (the description says 2, but I can only find 1), and a few USB 2.0 headers just in case. 2 CPU fan headers, and 3 chassis fan headers.

3)Bios - Easy to update, easy to access, and easy to use.

4)Build difficulty - My PC came together easily. All the mounting holes lined up with my case well (I've had problems with that on my ASrock z77 Ex4). The MSI website made finding the drivers easy. They downloaded and installed very quickly.

Overall, everything I'd expect from a board marketed to the overclocking, SLI, enthusiast crowd.

Cons: 1) The dedicated audio power connector is short, and requires one of the older style 5V connectors. Nothing else in my PC uses that style header, so I had to run another cable from my PSU just for it. That could have been designed better.

2) The infamous Killer NIC. There is a work around! Just install the Killer software. This will install the driver and the lame program that everyone complains about. Once the software is installed, go to your Program Files -> Qualcomm, and copy the folder inside (called killer or something similar) into a separate folder. Buried in that "killer" folder is the LAN driver. After that, uninstall the killer software (which will remove the driver). Now open Device Manager, select the Ethernet Adapter (windows will highlight it, saying it needs a driver) and tell Windows to "browse for a driver", and point it to the killer folder you copied. Windows will find the driver inside, and install if for you. Boom! working LAN, no lame software.

3) Raeltek HD Audio Manager - I'm not a fan of GUIs that only exist for the purpose of managing Windows settings. Everything I want to use in terms of audio management is in regular Windows sound settings. Fortunately it's trivial to disable the manager at startup.

Ultimately, none of the cons detract from the usability of the board. These are similar to problems I've experienced with other boards in the past, so no eggs are being removed.

Other Thoughts: 1) Dedicated audio - I'm not sure the "powered" audio actually makes a difference. Still, the on board audio sounds fine, no complaints.

2) Overclocking - There's an included app, the "extreme tuning utility" that claims to let you adjust the BIOS from within the OS. I know that part of the chipset driver - the "system management engine" I believe - is supposed to allow for BIOS control in the OS. I've never had a mobo that includes software to take advantage of this feature. It looks slick, and has nice MSI/Intel branding. It includes monitoring, modifiable graphs, and a full description of all your PC's hardware. I won't list it as a "pro" because I haven't used it in-depth, but I'm looking forward to messing with it.

My rig for reference:
MSI Z97 Gaming 5
i5 - 4690K
500GB Crusial SSD
Corsair 750Watt PSU
Corsair H100 water cooler
Corsair Carbide 300r case (yes, the big rad will fit if you remove the HDD bays)

1 out of 5 eggslasted a good 5 days

Pros: Ran well for 5 days

Cons: Cheaply made, flimsy motherboard, components are a joke! Gold keyboard and mouse (pheriphals) connections?? The way Msi put this board together makes me scratch my head...none of the fan connections are in places, the Killer Network 2200 by Qualcomm does literally nothing but manage your bandwidth from highest lowest priority.
The drivers actually cause this software to make the network slower. The Disc Msi gives with board for drivers contained Google chrome d/l which contained a virus called "search protect"?? It worked for 5 days, wouldn't boot or post.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Has a pretty user friendly bios from what I've used before.
-supports overclocking and card crossfiring if that's your thing
-Lots of usb ports(can never have too many usb ports)
-good support for front ports
-has both integrated sound and graphics(which I always like to have in case my GPU decides to die)
-Lots of SATA ports for all the storage you'll need for your games
-boots pretty fast
-finally, looks pretty cool

Cons: -not the greatest fan controls I have ever seen, it basically has either let it automatically run them or spin them at full speed. Nothing in between. Currently the only fan that's controllable on my rig is the CPUs, so it's not too bad right now but for future upgrades that's a bit annoying.
-Not really a con, but it is super specialised

Other Thoughts: As the name would suggest it's a board meant for gamers. If you're not a gamer there are cheaper options for you and this is expensive and over fluffed. If you are though you can't go wrong with a board like this. It has a good number of ports for all the drives and peripheral junk we plug in and the integrated graphics, while not on par with a good GPU of course, can still let you play on low end setting which is better than nothing while you're waiting for that new card to come in!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome MOBO

Pros: *Lots of features and ports
*Absolutely stunning appearance, looks awesome in a black/red build, board is matte black with red/silver accents. Some LED lighting on the bottom left of the board.
*LED panel is awesome without any tuning. Displays drive priority address and status on boot, then displays CPU temp once system is on.
*Lots of great attention to detail: 3-pin fan plugins are in great locations, IO panel on back has padding, SATA3 plugins are all parallel to board instead of perpendicular which means no interference with longer graphics cards, etc.
*Sound quality is awesome with AudioBoost2.
*BIOS makes OC'ing extremely easy and manageable, this thing is build to overclock.

Cons: *Killer Networking software is moderately annoying, and trying to upgrade its drivers actually caused it to delete itself which made connecting to the internet impossible until I put the driver disc back in and worked from the included version. The software itself cannot perform a network test because it test me I don't have flash on my PC, when I've updated it several times and run other flash sites no problem.

Other Thoughts: I want to preface this with an important piece of information, THERE IS NO SLi ON THE GAMING 3 BOARD. Gaming 5, 7, and 9 all support SLi, Gaming 3 only supports Crossfire, so BUYER BEWARE.

With the exception of the network drivers, everything on this board is awesome. It doesn't play nice with multiple downloads. Downloading BF4 to my PC through Origin all but kills any Steam downloads. Besides all that, this is a truly awesome motherboard, especially for the price. There is little/no reason to purchase the $200+ ASUS boards because this is every bit as capable as those boards. They include an OC panel in their high-end boards, but really it's nothing you can't do with a $30 DMM. Gaming 7/9 boards are also nice, but unless you need 10+ USB inputs, it's unnecessary. This board definitely gives you your money's worth.

5 out of 5 eggspretty Good!

Pros: Nice for overclocking IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO IT! Lol!

Nice Bios

Very Cool Features

Great sound quality

Cons: No Wireless. You have to buy a wireless adapter for it. Not that much money I got a netgear n300 it's really good! I live in a pretty big house and my router is downstairs and my pc is in my room. I got full bars also it's really good if u do online gaming (bf3/bf4, day z standalone etc. but If you want to get more get a n600.

4 out of 5 eggsReview Update - A solidly performing board

Pros: Performs well
Handles my 4790k without any bios updates
Network performance is excellent

Cons: Original board was defective and MSI customer support is hit or miss
Onboard audio drivers not so great

Other Thoughts: Sound quality seems a bit weird, this may be from the drivers. I plan to get a cheap PCI sound card to install in this. Other than that, the board seems fine. Also, despite the fact that MSI responds to negative reviews on newegg it's very hit or miss with their customer service. The first guy I contacted told me that my board needed a bios update to work....he was clearly wrong and the second guy I called at MSI told me any version of the BIOS should be able to boot with a Haswell refresh CPU. Anyway, I ended up RMAing it with newegg and they replace my board promptly. I recommend anyone with problems to consider going through newegg first.

5 out of 5 eggsA OK

Pros: So far so good running well with a I7 4790K.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Killer network seems to be running better after update. If you get blue screen at boot make sure you have the proper setting in bios.

3 out of 5 eggsNot the best

Pros: It looks cool.

Cons: I hate this board. It won't read my boot drive half of the time and makes me un-hook my other drives and then restart before it sees windows. It makes you use the + & - keys to change any voltage / cpu values in bios, no slider, no click and scroll or enter your own. I also found out recently that it only has 4 analog phases on it that are doubled. Almost everyone else has moved to digital which includes Gigabyte / Asus's budget boards.

Other Thoughts: Should have stayed with Gigabyte and ignored the visual flare which seems to be Msi's only selling point. This things acts like it should have been 75 dollars and not 150.
