3 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review

Pros: Quite a solid board except for constant USB 3.0 issues

Cons: I have two of these boards, one system was built in Sep 2014 and one in Nov 2014. Both of them have constant USB 3.0 issues, such as constantly disconnecting when transferring data, to several 3.0 ports not working at all.

This is happening on both boards with different CPU's. 2.0 ports have no issues at all but I purchased these for their numerous 3.0 ports. This is my first experience with MSI and I will be weary to ever purchase an MSI board again.

Other Thoughts: I posted a review here on Nov-1, 2014 and thought an update would help others who are considering this board

I built another PC with an ASUS motherboard, using Windows 7 same as with MSI, but no 3.0 issues at all and all ports are working. I'm not going to be hard on MSI as it seems all manufacturers are mass producing boards at such a huge volume, that all of them are slipping in the QC department. Would be nice if all boards had a decent burn in phase as part of QC to identify issues before being released for sale.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,
1. Check and make sure that power are connected correctly and firmly (JPWR1 and JPRW2), clear CMOS.
2. Check and ensure USB options are enable in BIOS.
3. For best result please do a clean/fresh load of windows and drivers update provided from our website www.msi.com

4 out of 5 eggsPretty nice

Pros: Looks good
lots of usb ports
lots of usb headders

Cons: I didn't like the location for some of the fan headers, I had to run fan cords across the board

Had a broken cpu pin out of box, was lucky enough that I was able to repair it, I mean it was bent as soon as I opened it up

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Value

Pros: Great BIOS
Whole bunch of usb 3.0 ports
Really great overclocking options for the price
Great looking without being overly flashy
Some of the pre-installed programs are actually a bit useful

Cons: Bloat-ware
First attempt to flash the BIOS almost killed the board, had to go on the MSI website and download the old bios to a flashdrive to boot it directly to the board. This is apparently a relatively common issue when trying to flash the bios from the msi update center thing.

Other Thoughts: I got this because my other ASUS board died during installation and I wanted something from another manufacturer. This is my first official computer build so I don't have much of a reference point but for a relative beginner it is easy to use and performs great. Happily overclocks.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Value, but...

Pros: Allows for some really good overclocking, the BIOS interface is nice and modern, although it needs a but more... direction in its layout. Then again, it supports a good amount of drives, the Intel Pentium G3258 I have OC'd like you would not believe on a stock cooler (YMMV), the RAM slots all work, XMP works like it should, and the thing has SO many USB 3 ports that I don't think I'll every run out. planning on doing a bandwidth stress test to see if I can use all of them at normal speeds on Tek Syndicate's forum. Also, I have not tried the M.2 slot. But with an SSD the SATA III ports are mighty fast.

Cons: Only two, but they're me nit picking. One is an issue for modders and tweakers like me, one is an issue for rookie builders. Overclocking is less straight toward than on an ASUS or Gigabyte motherboard... Labels could be better. The other is the placement of the fan headers. This board has 3 system 4-pin PWM fan headers and one CPU fan header. Good, but they're all over the place. First of all, most fans are in the kower front of a case, or the rear exhaust. The fan headers are all in odd places. One around the topmost PCI-E slot, making it stretch around the GPU if you want to tuck the cable behind the motherboard, and the other near the bottom, right next to the I/O. Its farther to the right than most of the ports, so its not optimal for a bottom-front case fan.And the last is a few inches above the SATA ports, and I have an optical drive. So, if you have one, and a decent size mid tower, it still might not fit properly because its so far above where a front fan would go. Sorry, but it won't lose an egg, mainly because you can buy adaptors, extensions, and really, no one uses an optical drive anymore. Other than that, its tough and works like it should.

2 out of 5 eggsCapable board, quality assurance suspect

Pros: This board has everything I was looking for, supporting a LGA 1150 processor, 2 USB 3.0 headers on the motherboard, support for DDR 3 memory

Cons: The quality is suspect, the computer build worked for about a month, then I started having problems with POST and booting. Even though there was no new software installed nor any new hardware installed. It just came to the point where I didn't know if the computer was going to start when I pressed the power button. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt.

Other Thoughts: I've submitted the board for RMA through the manufacturer but the computer will be down while the board is being replaced 15-25 business days after I send it in.

So this was a good motherboard when it worked. But you don't know if you 're getting a reliable board or not. Hit or miss.

4 out of 5 eggsGood price, solid BIOS options, some QA issues

Pros: I'm not necessarily an "elite" system builder, but I've put together a decent workstation/gaming rig every 3-4 years for the last 15 years or so and this board struck me as a good balance of price, performance, and hardware support.

My finished build (i7-4770K, EVGA-brand GTX 760, Crucial Ballistix 4x8GB) is crazy-fast even at default clock speeds and quite stable.

Cons: My first board had a bad DIMM slot (#3). However, because I initially only had two sticks installed, I didn't discover this until a couple of weeks later when I decided to make the jump to 32GB for virtualization and data processing.

By that point I had recycled the packaging, so I couldn't really RMA it. Since everything else about the board seemed fine, I decided to order another copy and put the one that could only handle two DIMMs into an old case along with an inexpensive Pentium CPU (G3220) as a hand-me-down PC for a friend. Not a big deal in the end.

1 out of 5 eggsannnnd I bricked it.

Pros: Worked great for me for a couple months. Survived one bios flash a couple weeks in. More USB 3.0 ports than I know what to do with. I liked the Bios interface, great GUI too. You can drag around the boot priority options with a GUI in the bios, and monitor your hardware and control system fans and CPU pretty easily. Comes with Intel XTU great for overclocking.

Cons: Bricked it with 2nd Bios update. I tried using Live update and my computer restarted to a black screen. RIP board. This is unfortunately a common issue with MSI boards from what I've seen online. Really sad to see this with otherwise a decent quality board.

Other Thoughts: Lesson learned never update Bios...
In the process of RMA right now. Kinda sucks having to pay for shipping all the way across the country for MSI to hopefully fix my board. Also waiting without the board for 5-15 days not including shipping to and from MSI. This just barely beats out buying a new board for me. Especially since this happened from using MSI software to update an MSI product...

1 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 issues

Pros: Looks nice. Most things work.

Cons: Constant USB 3.0 issues. I have two of these boards and the usb 3.0 aren't working up to speed, dont work at all and often not even recognized by windows 7. Every day a different issue with them. I think msi has a problem with this as I called tech support and as friendly as they are, they just suggest to uninstall and reinstall and uninstall and reinstall drivers.

All USB 2.0 work fine with no issues at all, only 3.0 has all the problems, so since I built both pcs with this board to rely on 3.0 it has become quite a letdown. I suggest staying away from this board if you need to transfer images from any device relying on usb 3.0

Other Thoughts: Most everything else on the board seems to work fine except that one board freezes if you go into bios through the power button.
