5 out of 5 eggsMSI H97M-G43

Pros: Love this Haswell motherboard! Tons of feature and quality for the price.

Cons: Only con is that its not free!

Other Thoughts: Been using these boards in tons of builds for office and general purpose PCs. No DOAs or RMAs needed.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: FAST
mATX form factor
6 SATA ports
USB 3 and USB2 ports

Cons: Didn't detect memory speed, had to set manually.

Can't speak to video memory error, I avoided this by setting it to 700-something meg, rather than the full 1024.

Other Thoughts: Worked well out of the box. Includes 2 SATA cables, manual, backplate.

No screws, but those came with the case and I have a bucket of them kicking around somewhere.

i5-4590S, MSI H97 mATX systemboard, InWin BL641 case, Samsung SSD, and 16 GB of memory, running windows 8.1. . this thing boots up FAST and runs quiet.

5 out of 5 eggsVery satisfied

Pros: Great price. This was the only micro ATX 9 series motherboard I could find with a displayport connector. Although I don't currently have a 4K display, driving a 4K display at 60Hz with Haswell / 9 series chipsets requires a displayport connector and this was literally the only mATX board with displayport I could find when I purchased this board. I plan on adding a 4K display once prices come down so having a displayport connector was a must have feature.

Cons: I could not find all of the necessary drivers included in the box / on the MSI website. This might be resolved by now, but I could not get rid of a yellow driver error in windows device manager with the MSI drivers in the box or online. I searched the asus website and found the appropriate intel driver on their site (called MEI_Win7-8-8-1_VER10001204_1-5M), which resolved the issue once it was installed.

Other Thoughts: Another issue I had (which is not MSI's fault but is inherent with the intel display implementation) is that I was initially unable to get my 1440p capable monitor to work at that resolution. My 2009 AMD phenom 2 with integrated graphics had no problems driving 1440p over dual link DVI. However when I set up my new intel system with the same cable it gave me 1080p resolution - it turns out that intel does not support dual link DVI. My Dell monitor will not do 1440p over HDMI, and the haswell / 9 series combo will not do 1440p over DVI. So I had to spend $5 and wait a week to get a display port connector to drive my existing monitor.

Another reviewer repeatedly mentioned a problem with 4K 60Hz support over HDMI - it is my understanding that no 9 series motherboard will do that - as I mentioned above, you must use displayport instead to get 60Hz.

This is my first motherboard with a GUI bios. A lot of the settings are still text based menus and not the most intuitive, but I have been very pleased with the drag-and-set fan controls which seem to work as intended. Another pleasant surprise is that I can power on the machine from completely off (I have disabled partial shutdown or whatever the feature is called in Windows 8/8.1) by taping the space bar. Boot times to the OS are also quick (I haven't felt the need to time them).

Setting up Windows on my previous AMD builds was uneventful and painless. This intel build had some hiccups (searching online for drivers, no 1440p support at first, my ATI TV tuner card still doesn't work), but the motherboard has been great. Given the price and the fact that it had the features I wanted (displayport, M.2 support, mATX form factor, two system fan headers and CPU and system fan adjustability), I could not be more satisfied. The only other feature I could want is thunderbolt, but only top of the line full ATX boards have that feature - even intel has dripped TB from their NUCs so I think thunderbolt is going to be Mac only for the foreseeable future.

I would highly recommend this board to anyone looking for a mATX board.

1 out of 5 eggsIs MSI professional?

Pros: Not much any longer. In my initial review I indicated it was the only mobo explicitly stating support for 3840 x 2160 @60Hz over HDMI connector because MSI posted this specification (I still have the screenshot with the initial specs). I bought this mobo precisely to connect to a 4K TV with HDMI input 4K@60 Hz. It does not work. It was false-advertising by MSI.
Recently MSI changed the mobo specifications dropping 4K@60Hz over HDMI claim. Is this professional?

Cons: MSI changed specifications to lesser performance!!!
Mobo has two PCIe x 1, but only one can be populated.
One can read more Cons in my previous review. These Cons remain even after latest BIOS update (of July 2014)

Other Thoughts: I apologize to clutter user reviews repeatedly.
I was naïve, my mistake to trust MSI. It will not happen again.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid motherboard

Pros: Solid performance in Windows. Seems well built and designed.

This motherboard has all of the features that I wanted while researching MicroATX boards. It ran right out of the box after installation and has not failed or shown error. I like that this model ditches PCI and sticks with just PCI-E slots.

The BIOS is easy enough to navigate and has every option I could want. It has the important things like boot order, overclocking, fan settings, RAM timings, etc, plus a lot more. You can use your mouse or keyboard to navigate it.

The board has a nice black/blue theme which fits the blue G.Skill Ares RAM and MSI HD 7850 that I have.

Cons: -The Smart fan setting in the BIOS doesn't work for me. At default, the base RPM is too low and causes the CPU to idle around 40C-45C. When I try to increase the RPM per stage, nothing would happen. All I had to do was switch from Smart to the normal fan setting and everything seemed ok. I now idle around 33C with the normal fan setting.

-There is no IEEE 1394 header. My previous HP OEM motherboard had one, so I kind of expected a board made for custom builds would also have one.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure whether I can call the side SATA ports a pro or a con. It works in my small case, but two of the ports are blocked off from use by an internal bay. The advantage I would guess is that it is harder to accidentally pull out the cables when doing service.

Also, remember that when installing two memory modules, you need to space them apart for dual channel mode. Say you have slots 1-4 and want to stick in 2 modules, you would place them in slots 1/3 or 2/4 for dual channel. I am sure that it is common for those who do not read their manuals to accidentally place two modules in slots 1/2 and think they are running dual channel.

1 out of 5 eggsMore and More Bugs

Pros: Rich in features compared to other MoBos

Cons: 1. Wrong BIOS drive for processor fan, it spins at 4000 rpm for about 4-6 seconds whenever processor fan starts, especially annoying when computer comes out of sleep;
2. If one sets 1024 MB of RAM in BIOS dedicated for integrated Intel Video (IGD), the computer doesn't come out of sleep - and, no, it is not a driver issue, I have another mobo based computer with the same processor, video,... and it works as it should.
3. No BIOS support for several relatively new devices I have (if I connect a 23" LED full HD HP monitor, the computer doesn't go to sleep - again, I have another with identical IGD + video driver and it works OK) ...
4. Power LED doesn't have Off as option for S3 - Sleep. Expect to have blinking light in the room. This is especially annoying when you connect to a TV or with young children...
5. All MSI utilities are pretty much useless, except MSI Extreme Tuning Utility which is in fact INTEL Tuning Utility - it allows to setup the RAM in Intel XMP profiles. All other utilities are buggy, delay start (yes, including so called MSI Fast Boot), open firewall....

Other Thoughts: I will never buy an MSI motherboard again.

4 out of 5 eggsFeature rich, still needs BIOS update

Pros: Rich features. Currently the only board with explicit spec of resolution 3840x2160 (4K) at 60Hz supported over HDMI or DP for Intel HD. Ready for Intel core I fifth generation.
UEFI bios with Intel capabilities enumerated explicitly such that the user knows what to enable/disable. Attractive price.

Cons: 1. Even after the latest BIOS update (as of June 23, 2014) if you choose in BIOS a large amount of RAM (1024 MB)allocated for IGD, the system does not get out of sleep. It took me a large number of trial and error attempts to identify the cause.
2. When the board comes out of sleep, hibernation, or at boot, but not at reboot, the CPU fan spins up to high (4000 rpm) for about 3-6 seconds, useless and noisy, then spins down to normal (1000 rpm).
MSI, please solve these small issues to make this board a jewel for a modern HTPC.

4 out of 5 eggsMSI H97M-G43 LGA 1150 Intel H97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Attractive looking board. Paired with the i3-4330 it out performs my water cooled, OCed, QX6850 setup running at 4.2 GHz. USB 2.0 at very top for keyboard and mouse ensures reliable input verses driver dependent USB 3.0. Two PCIe X 1 slots (1 usable) for modern hardware because for me old PCI slots are a waste of space.
M.2 support for M.2 PCIe up to 10Gb/s under UEFI option ROM will be nice in the near future. Runs 8GBs DDRIII 1866 Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer at 1600 MHz without issues. This board's UEFI BIOS is easy to navigate and has lots of options. Two BIOS updates executed smoothly from UEFI update and thumb drive.

Cons: Could not use in a slim Pixxo case as originally planned due to the side SATA ports directly against power supply housing. Purchased this in part because the description stated support for RAM faster than DDRIII 1600 but that appears to be misinformation after contacting MSI. No support for XP 64bit which is the OS I use most frequently and dual-boot alongside Windows 7 on my personal machine.

Other Thoughts: Could not use this board as originally intended to replace an ailing AMD HTPC (later found the Pyro SSD responsible). Will toy around with this for a while.
