Pros: Everything to do with this motherboard is great. Great looks, compatibility, and even good quality

Cons: My pc's cooling is pretty good but its already showing marks from heat, and this thing gets HOT so be careful if you're going to be taking apart your computer shortly after using it

1 out of 5 eggsDefective?

Pros: .

Cons: I bought this motherboard around November of 2015. After me and my friends set up my computer, I hadn't used it until about recently. i used a userbenchmark and i noticed everything was below the expected performance, so i tried putting in different RAM, and CPU. Still, preforming below expected performance. Im not 100% sure, but im pretty sure i got a defective Motherboard.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Card For Beginners

Pros: I bought this mobo to save a little more money compared to the 990. I do not regret it either, it's a great mobo for the price. It is easy to use for beginners too like myself. There isn't too much you are missing from the 990 besides some overclocking abilities. Bios is very easy to navigate.
-looks good
-easy to install
-lots of rear usb ports
-cheap

Cons: -no so far

3 out of 5 eggsAgreed with Drew S. 4/12/2016 (970 Platform is flawed, not just MSI)

Pros: Made a great Host platform for my FX8350 running 4 VM's under Hyper-V 2012 R2 Core.
Aesthetics are great.
Board design and layout are great, (For the era of of the platform)
Good overclocking ability for (in a limited AMD platform)
MSI has the best BiOS interface by far.
MSI is a great brand, and they are really starting to make a name for themselves again.

Cons: Board is dead after a little over a year
Both North bridge and VRM heat sinks get EXTREMELY hot to the touch.
CPU tends to run way too warm.

Other Thoughts: This is the 3rd 970 platform Motherboard to go out on my in the past year, and it's not just MSI.
This problem appears to be with the AM3+ 970 platform in general, and I would advise any buyer if you're looking for longevity in what you're building spend $50.00 more and go with the 990 chip set. Although, with Xen, and Broadwell-E I doubt the relevance of this platform will be much longer.

3 out of 5 eggsShort-lived glory

Pros: +Build quality is phenomenal
+Looks downright sexy
+BIOS is nearly flawless and easy to understand
+Overclocking is a breeze with one click
+PLENTY of USB space
+Audio quality is extremely solid
+A good amount of SATA Ports
+Plenty of room to install large heatsink
+Decent amount of room for multiple GPUs (PCI Express x16 slot on the bottom is a little too close to the front-panel connectors for comfort, however)

Cons: -Died suddenly after only 6 months. (Problems in "Other")

-In most cases with a PSU shroud (like mine, the NZXT s230), the front-side USB 3.0 cable is awkwardly located, and was a tight fit.
-The long heatsink (I think its for the Northbridge?) parallel to the I/O ports is bulky and awkwardly placed. It is nearly impossible to unplug the 8-pin connector without using pliers, and even then, its extremely difficult.
-The 2nd RAM slot was finnicky, and I couldnt' get it to POST when a stick was installed into there, so I only used the 1st and 3rd.
-Northbridge heatsinks get VERY hot.
-The second PCI x1 slot is basically useless, since the smart thing to do with a graphics card is install it on the PCI x16 slot DIRECTLY above it, therefore covering up the x1 slot completely.

Other Thoughts: Turned on my tower, and the lights came on, my drives read and spun, and my heatsink and my graphics card were warm, but I couldn't get it to POST. I received no output from my I/O or from my graphics card. I set some time aside to diagnose it, and after testing my components with a spare motherboard, I ruled out that the board was dead. I confirmed my suspicion when I plugged a tester speaker into the board, and heard no beeps at all.
-The RMA process is RIDICULOUS, and you're better off buying another board.

All in all, the price for this board is extremely reasonable, and a very good deal, especially for MSI quality. It has loads of extra features, but when it comes to longevity, it's either a hit or a miss.
