OC Engine

Run into unstable situations when pushing your CPU to the limit? This occurs because the internal clocks are linked through the 100 MHz BCLK strap. Thanks to a integrated Clock Generator, MSI® motherboards support more flexible BCLK adjustments, from 100 / 125 / 167 MHz straps. Using these straps prevents system crashing while overclocking on the edge and opens doors to achieve the absolute maximum.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome X99 board

Pros: This board installed and booted perfectly. Been using it for about two months with zero issues. Perfect for a next gen gaming build that doesn't break the bank. The OC genie button got my 9820k up to 3.8ghz without having to do further voltage adjustments. Glad I can upgrade to the fastest RAM in the future.

Cons: Non so far!

Other Thoughts: My device manager had about 20 devices with errors on them. I installed all the drivers from the CD it came with and all was perfect. Should have done that from the start.

5 out of 5 eggsFuture Proof Motherboard

Pros: Lots of USB ports (both 3.0 and 2.0)
Superior overclocking potential
SLI support (haven't taken advantage of this yet)
Cheap

Cons: There's no issues I've come across as of yet.

Other Thoughts: This is a great budget board if you're going to be upgrading your CPU and ram.

1 out of 5 eggsSupport sucks

Pros: It's running kind of.

Cons: USB devices are randomly failing or locking up system.

Went to website to check if new bios version and there are no options under their drop down box for X99 motherboards.

Went to their global website to register and submit support ticket and the submit button does nothing when clicked.

If they can't even program a website properly and keep it up to date what hope is there for something as complicated as a motherboard?

Other Thoughts: I'd take it back if I wanted to spend another 2 days taking it apart, rebuilding, re installing hours and hours worth of software, and dealing with licensing for each one.

Hopefully I can resolve this.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,
1. Check and make sure that power are connected correctly and firmly (JPWR1 and JPRW2).
2. Check your other major hardware’s (memory, video card, CPU and power supply) to ensure that they are not the cause of the issue.
3. Update BIOS and drivers provided from our website link here; http://www.msi.com/support/mb/X99S-SLI-PLUS.html#down-bios
4. If you need further assistant, please feel free to contact our technical support department directly at 626.271.1004 from M to F, 6am to 6pm Pacific standard Time.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat looks but buyer beware

Pros: This board looks beautiful. It's also a value for price conscious x99 builds (if there is such a thing). Reviewing this against other x99 boards, nothing major really stands out. It's missing a few key items the more expensive boards have but that's what you're not paying for. The OC button was a nice touch.

Cons: I had to RMA this board back as it will not support 16x/16x PCI-e configuration in any slot other then the first two full length slots. For a dual slot card, this means putting the two GPU's right up next to each other. I immediately had thermal issues. The specs don't call this out. They say 4 16x PCIe slots, which is technically accurate if your using only one card, i guess.

Other Thoughts: Only really the one issue with this board and it's more the fault of MSI's documentation and spec sheet more then anything else. I have to knock a few eggs off for it though. The product itself is solid as long as you don't want to do tri-fire or a dual 295x2 arrangement.

1 out of 5 eggsNo RAID ability using port 5-6*

Pros: It looks good. Supports the latest and greatest LGA2011-3.
Seems to be well built.

Cons: The documentation is wrong. It states on their website and in the manual 0/1/5/10(SATA1~6 only) Ports 5-6 will not work in any RAID mode with ports 1-4. Even when not using the M2 card.
*Ports 5-10 are not usable for RAID. You can select them in your RAID creation but once you "create volume" it drops to degraded with port 5 (0.6 in the bios) and another disk "missing". The missing disk even gets the serial number messed up so you don't have the ability to remove the missing disk.

Other Thoughts: I am disappointed in this purchase. I have opened a case with MSI and have used the MSI forums to discover that this problem has happened to other users without a fix yet. I plan to RMA this board for a refund if MSI support does not have a fix soon.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board

Pros: This is my first time building a computer and I likely did not need a new 2011-v3 board for my purposes but figured I would opt for it more for future proofing. Anyway, having little experience with this stuff and little to compare it to this board definitely met my expectations. Everything worked flawlessly and it was very easy to configure. For being a cheaper board it does everything I need it to and does it well.

Cons: I am having some trouble with a few of the USB ports on the back panel. It may be something in the BIOS or just a lack of drivers but 3 to 4 of the ports do not seem to work no matter what I do. Frankly it is not affecting my score because there are more than enough ports to suite my needs.

Other Thoughts: More of a personal preference, but I personally dig the all black design.

5 out of 5 eggsFor User with No Video Output

Pros: I ran into the same issue initially and I tried multiple video cards, but this was because I had the quad channel memory kit installed in the wrong order as I did not realize the memory went

1,2,3,4 CPU 8,7,6,5

as I was thinking it went

1,2,3,4 CPU 5,6,7,8

Everything is working great now once in the correct order

Cons: Nothing major so far, but I had to change bios mode to UEFI only to boot from DVD which wasn't that much of a big deal.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price, features if it works ... I could give better rating if it worked.

Cons: DOA - black screen not booting. It was not working then it was working for a few hours and then stopped working. Sent for replacement.

Other Thoughts: Just don't make me regret choosing MSI instead of overpriced ASUS mobos. I added 1 year replacement plan just in case.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent motherboard for the money.

Pros: I bought this board to use with an i7-5820 CPU and three gtx 970's in triple SLI. I also installed 32 GB of DDR4-2133. There are two 512 GB SSD's in Raid 0 array. Windows 7 experience score shows 7.9 for all categories except the stock speed CPU which show 7.8. The sequential reads and writes for the SSD's max out over a 1000 MBps with Atto bench. I bechmarked the video cards using Metro Last Light Redux with FRAPS on a 2560X1600 monitor. I recorded an average frames per second of 150's, with a minimum of 90's and a maximum of over 200. The only disappointment has been the overclocking. The OC Genie worked well but only gave me a 15% overclock to 3.8. Trying to overclock it more than that has been slow going. I do not blame the motherboard for this because the new Haswell-E's are known to be difficult to overclock in many cases.

Cons: None so far.

3 out of 5 eggsIssues with RAID and SATA

Pros: This board seemed ideal for my needs. 10 SATA 3 ports, 128 GB DDR4 support, Intel RAID and more.

Cons: I have yet to get the Intel RAID working. I flashed the firmware, etc. The SATA express ports (part of the RAID controller) are supposed to be backwards compatible with SATA 3 drive. However, I can't get the drives to show up consistently. When the RAID mode is enabled, they never show up. When set to ACPI, they show up occasionally. I know they work as have been using them for a months in another system.

Also when in RAID0 mode, drive performance to SSDs was slower to 4 drives than to a single drive in ACPI mode.

Other Thoughts: If I can resolve this, this board will be quite nice
