A simple and inexpensive motherboard for the enthusiast or the first time builder, the Asus M2N-MX is a great starting point for anyone wanting to build a system or upgrade their motherboard. Designed with the small form factor case in mind, this motherboard will fit into most small desktop systems. Equipped with an AMD socket AM2, suitable for Athlon 64 processors, including the X2 and FX series, it's more than capable of handling anything you can throw in there.
Using the Nvidia GeForce 6100 chipset with integrated graphics in conjunction with up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, the M2N-MX is perfect for those that don’t need a discrete graphics card. Audio's onboard, too: hear crystal-clear quality from all your audio - MP3 playback, home theatre, advanced gaming, VOIP and more, and never worry - SoundMAX high-definition audio is there to enhance your experience!
It also includes a 10/100 Ethernet port, onboard 5.1 channel sound, and 4 SATA ports. And because of those 4 ports, by adding multiple hard drives to the system the M2N-MX supports RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 5. The M2N-MX has multiple expansion slots to use including one x16, and one x1 PCIe slots, and two additional PCI slots. Build a powerful system -- the Asus M2N-MX is a great foundation.

Worked fine but had lots of problems.
- Pros: Bought nine of these motherboards, all worked identically.
- Cons: Motherboard pinout for power, reset, HDD LED, etc. is misprinted on the motherboard. Use the diagram in the manual instead.
Socket AM2 is non-standard. The heatsync clips down okay but when you tighten it down there is no locking clip for the retention bracket lock to clip into. There are no mounting points near where the power cable and PATA cable plugs into the motherboard. Plugging and un-plugging those into the board causes it to flex more than I am comfortable with. Labeling for DIMM slots is confusing on the motherboard and in the manual. Read it carefully if you want to get them in the right slots for dual-channel performance. Onboard Gigabit network does NOT work in 64 bit windows. Tried drivers that came with CD-ROM, tried downloading new, and even tried some beta drivers. None work.
- Other Thoughts: We won't pick Asus for next purchase.
PGM (Pretty good Mobo)
- Pros: Going for a cheap but quality mobo, so I had to pick ASUS. Came w/ everything needed.
- Cons: Diagram on board is wrong for power/reset/light hookups. Follow the diagram in the book.
- Other Thoughts: Great mobo for the price. Nice integrated LAN and the video seems to work just fine. Built this comp for somebody else. Athlon x2 3800+, 1gb wintec RAM, WD 160gb.

Satisfaction!!
- Pros: very cheap and works well.
- Cons: need to update bios and had a very hard time trying to install vista
- Other Thoughts: you should buy it if your in low budget.
There are better boards for Linux
- Pros: Having onboard video, LAN, and sound in one package is nice for a small server solution.
- Cons: Got a kernel panic when attempting to install Red Hat EL 5 on the M2N-MX. After some research, discovered that I needed to pass a parameter to the kernel to disable the board's jacked-up APIC functions. This gets Linux installed. I then discover that there is a problem with how the board is reporting memory mapped PCI devices to the kernel. Evidently this is causing random lockups on some installations, so I disable this "feature" with another kernel boot parameter. Then I notice that the onboard nVidia MCP61 ethernet controller is reporting a different MAC address everytime the system boots, which basically junks my network configuration and forces the use of default values. There is some discussion about the latest driver release from nVidia correcting this issue, but with all the other stop-gaps I'm having to employ (and there ARE more), I haven't had time to try this yet. The manual is also just plain wrong in several places, explaining BIOS featues that don't exist, etc.
- Other Thoughts: There are better boards for Linux. Although this particular Asus board gets good reviews here, my experience has been disappointing. I will look at other brands for my next Linux box.
Solid board!
- Pros: As said in the title, it's a solid board. In the past 6 months, I've built many PCs using these for my clients and I've not had any fail yet. These PCs are normally running with Athlon 64-X2 4400+ and 1GB RAM. They will also normally have WinXP Pro and/or Ubuntu. Using the on-board video is fine for the web pages and office apps these people run. It will even allow you to run Ubuntu 7.04 with "DESKTOP EFFECTS" on. I highly recommend this board...
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: Most XP OEM disks need you to supply SATA drivers for the install. I have a custom multi-boot DVD which has the drivers slipstreamed so I'm fine. This is no different from many other boards so that's why it's not listed under "CONS."
