This quiet fanless-design board is not for the novice kit-basher, but you don't need to be an uber-geek, either. It makes an excellent transition board, being compatible with both ends of the tech spectrum. It provides two PCI x 16 slots, one PCI x 1 slot and two regular PCI slots, supports up to 8 gigabytes of 240 pin DDR2 memory, a gigabit LAN interface, two IEE 1394 ports and up to 8 USB 2.0 ports.

It can control four internal SATA 3 Gb/s drives (which can optionally be set up in several RAID configurations) and one external drive, in addition to up to 4 regular ATA devices. It is Intel QuadCore compatible and is highly adjustable for the over-clocking crowd with controls for adjusting clock frequency, separate controls for Core, Chip and DIMM voltages, adjustable front-side buss frequency, and adjustable PCI Express frequency. What you can't adjust, you probably shouldn't touch anyway!

Especially for over-clockers and moderately experienced kit-bashers, this is a motherboard worth looking into.

4 out of 5 eggsNVIDIA 9800 gtx+ issues with PN5-D motherboard

Pros: This is a very stable and reliable motherboard.

Cons: If you own a large video card and want to bridge them, i.e. multiple video cards on the same board, the distance between the SATA slots and the card is very small. It is near impossible to plug in the SATA cable.

1 out of 5 eggsDishonest Manufacturer

Pros: Feature rich board that worked well while it laste.

Cons: Asus is a dishonest company. Terrible RMA department. My board had no audio output so I sent it in for a replacement. Two weeks later no response by Asus either through email or phone and after three weeks they sent the same board back saying that the board was rejected due to physical damage.

The board was in perfect physical condition when I sent it to them the only thing that was wrong was no audio. What they sent back to me was the board with bent pins, a damaged corner and one of the tabs on the large north bridge heatsink was missing. They lied and said it was that way when they received it so that they could deny and void their manufacturers warranty.

Other Thoughts: They damaged by board and refused to replace my motherboard by lying and saying it was that way when they received it. I have been an Asus customer since the early days of Pentium MMX Technology and have never had problems until now. Take my advice before sending an item for warranty take pictures of your component so if they try to lie and do to you what they did to me you will have proof that it was not that way you send it out.

Wasted money shipping the item to Asus just to have them damage my board and lie saying it was that way when they received it so they wouldn't have to honor my warranty.

I have been an Asus Customer for many years, but after this experience I can no longer recommend this company.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear about the issues. Please contact us at Newegg_ASUS_MBSupport@asus.com stating all RMA case numbers and if possible attach pictures of where the board is warped.

1 out of 5 eggsIt's a Motherboard. That's about it.

Pros: It's got nice HD Audio. Comes with a neat little adapter to easily connect front panel audio pins.

Cons: The screw holes for attaching the mobo to the case are not standard. It was a bish putting the board on. The HD Audio drivers+software FAIL HARD for microphones. Get a USB mic.

Don't even THINK about overclocking a q6600, let alone anything, on this board. It will not get a stable overclock on a q6600 over 2.6GHz. The highest this junk goes is MAYBE 2.7GHz.

Other Thoughts: What a useless piece of garbage.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Dice!

Pros: It didnt catch fire?

Cons: I booted it up and no video. Everything seems to be running fine except the no video. Checked with another known working video card and still nothing. Trolled ASUS website and forums for some help and the best they can tell me is that this board is bad.

Other Thoughts: Im going to give this another shot and RMA this board. Maybe my next review will be more upbeat.

4 out of 5 eggsNot a bad board

Pros: Nice SLI feature, and the 1333FSB is really nice as well

Cons: Holes for Intel heatsinks are a slight bit larger than the legs on the heatsinks itself, but a little elbow grease gets it to work properly.

2 out of 5 eggsWorth the Price

Pros: Well, when it works, it's pretty solid. The AI tool makes it easy to overclock to 20%. Also, the connectors are well placed.

Cons: This is the second one I've owned, the first one was from a different website. Both have had EXACTLY the same problems. They both worked well for a few weeks (with the latest BIOS update), after this time, BSOD every few days, and finally, a BIOS dump that is unrecoverable. I did everything the manual and the website instructed to recover and could not do it. I've already ordered an EVGA replacement...I won't say "Don't buy this board", but for me, it was nothing but trouble.

Other Thoughts: Setup: E8500, 9800 GTX, EVGA 780i (soon), 4GB Corsair Dominator, Vista 64 bit

1 out of 5 eggsVERY BAD MOTHERBOARD

Pros: NONE

Cons: This has to be the worst motherboard I have ever purchased. Got three of it for a client's build and had nothing but problems with it. One is working by luck and two completely dead. Unable to finish flash bios, half-way running and automaticallly blank screen. Constantly freezes and reboots under windows. Tried re-installing the default bios disc software, tried different compatible ram listed from user's manual, Tried different supporting type Intel CPU, pulling the board out, and replaced a new P5N-E SLI in from Newegg. Installing a different board. That worked.

Other Thoughts: It is not MEMORY, CPU, POWER SUPPLY, VIDEO CARD OR wrong jumpers or connectors. It is bios configuation SETUP problemsof this board and motherboard itself. Do not waste your time and money! Try another another motherboard. I have now two dead motherboards and I did not returned them yet.

Pros: none

Cons: This has to be the worst motherboard I have ever purchased. Got it for a client's build and had nothing but problems with it. Constantly freezes and reboots under windows. Tried re-installing the software, tried different ram. Tried pulling the board out, throwing it across the room, and installing a different board. That worked.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Board

Pros: Easy to set up, and plenty of documentation. The bios has more features than my last mobo. Has a bright LED to tell when it's getting power.

Cons: The capacitors got in the way of my old heat sink (a boxy old coolermaster) so i bought an Arctic Cooling freezer 7. This also got caught up, but on the northbridge heatsink. I got it to fit on by bending the AC's fins and cutting a chunk out of the fan housing.

Other Thoughts: It was easy enough, for my first full build.
