5 out of 5 eggsGreat board!

Pros: Has all the features I needed for a RAID 0+1 config using 4 WD Black 6401AALS drives, 8 gig G. Skill 1066, Nvidia 9300 video and tons of USB connections. The numerous USB ports allowed me to ditch my hubs from my previous NCCH-DL system.

Cons: Upgrade the BIOS immediately to 1101. Works great afterwards. Can't say anything negative about the board. Some state they had problems with the sound, mine did not.

Other Thoughts: Running at AUTO settings for clock/bus speed. Will tweak it out later once I get the time. Very happy with this board even though it is an older board (new one is P5E3 WS Pro) and much more impressed with the performance over the P5Q Turbo I tried. Using the OEM Intel fan was a challenge to attach to the board, the holes must be smaller but it fit and still allows room for the memory slots. A larger fan may not work if filling all the memory slots. Update the drivers with the latest from the Asus site and as mentioned above the BIOS update to 1101.

5 out of 5 eggsGot Stability? Here ya Go!

Pros: This is my 7th P5E WS and it is reminiscent of my 1971 Karman Ghia or my 1968 Chevy Bel Air station wagon. Oh, but let's not forget the EverReady Bunny. No S D and R&R here but it is stable, crisp and versatile. I have considered the asking price unduly high given the "legacy" status of this product but sometimes good old really is great and lasting. Here ya go.

Cons: Technically, in my opinion, any adapter slot adjacent to--especially above--the default GPU slot is foolish unless intended only for riser cards that somehow avoid the radiation of heat from the video card below. And if you're going to install it anyway, please, why not x4?

Other Thoughts: I'm buying another!!

3 out of 5 eggsTwo Bad MB's

Pros: Really a great mb once up and running
ASUS is reliable company with good support.

Cons: First MB failed on arrival..RMA'd a
Ordered a second one; MB fails after 6-8 hours (suspect bad solder joint or capacitor)failed after two months with intermittent failure and currently RMA'd back to asus..
So, two MB's failed and had to be returned.

4 out of 5 eggsGood workstation board.

Pros: PCI-X 133MHz, Good BIOS layout and manual. Good boot options. All ROMS will load before entering BIOS setup allowing boot choices from SCSI adaptors, fantastic!!! Good layout too. Plenty of USB2. ECC memory support. Really flexable SATA cables. BIOS update abilities are easy and well done! Thank you ASUS. Q-Connectors were a nice touch. 2 x eSATA. The back plate for the mobo was nice as well.

Cons: Shipped with ver0803 BIOS - Highly recommend going to ver1101 otherwise you will wait a year before getting through, or to, POST when ECC memory is installed!!! The manual could have described some BIOS options better. A staggered SATA connector block would have been nice for the 90deg SATA connectors. (like those found on Areca RAID) ASUS automated driver install took forever. PCI-X slot should have been below the first PCI-E x16 slot to allow RAID controller to use 90deg SATA cables because a filled 2nd PCI-E x16 slot doesn't leave enough room. Doesn't accept x8 PCI-E according to manual? Otherwise I might have gotten a PCI-E RAID Controller.

Other Thoughts: If installing Vista64-bit with SATA DVD ROM must set to AHCI mode for install or Vista64 will hang on install. After install you can set SATA to RAID again. If installing XP and using a USB keyboard the drivers are not good and will knockout your keyboard so have a PS2 keyboard handy to rollback the USB driver on reboot.

I was worried about getting an ASUS board again but this one seems quite solid despite some early troubles before updating the BIOS.

5 out of 5 eggsP5E WS Pro

Pros: Great layout. Asus put floppy connector back next to the power supply connector in front. Placement of PCI-X slot could make it hard to Crossfire. Fired up right out of the box and shipped with BIOS 0803 ! Perfect. Just like Newegg most of the time.

Cons: I really can't think of any. Except Asus had enough room to add another PCIEx1 slot to the left of the PCIEx16 slot next to the CPU. If you use a double slot video card in the Primary #1 PCIEx16 slot, it covers your Only PCIEx1 slot.

Newegg's Tennessee warehouse is still packing shipments with paper padding as the Only packing materials. Newegg will eventually lose my business if they can't or if they are Unwilling to change shipping practices at TN warehouse.

Other Thoughts: Great board with everything working without ANY hiccups whatsoever right out of the box.

My setup: P5E WS Pro, Intel QX9650, 8 GB(4 x 2GB) G.Skill 1066, HIS 4870 HD 1GB, Adaptec ASC39320A-R U320 SCSI, in a Lian-Li V2000 Case with a BFG 850 SLI PS.

5 out of 5 eggsYour CPU Selection is very important

Pros: It has many features and a PCI-X slot. A very good hybrid server/gaming board with nice overclocking features

Cons: No DDR3 support. No support for some older CPUs. Selective memory support.

Other Thoughts: Your CPU Selection is very important. Do not assume your processor is supported. I inserted a Pentium D 2.66 processor with a 533Mhz FSB. I did this because I needed to update the Bios on the motherboard to allow support for my quad core CPU. I never imagined that this board would not support this processor.

To make things even more confusing, the motherboard allowed me to use the CPU, but would not allow me to save the BIOS settings. Every time I saved the BIOS settings the computer would not POST. It would just hang there with no video, no beeps. The only way to get past this was to clear CMOS and reboot. I was able to upgrade the bios and when I inserted my new quad core, all went well.

I called ASUS support, and the guy told me it was an incompatibility with the memory and he recommended that I RMA the board and buy compatible memory. I am glad I hopped onto the ASUS website to get a list of the supported CPUs. This helped explain why I was having trouble.

3 out of 5 eggsJust unlucky this time

Pros: Haven't encountered any serious problems so far.

Cons: I've purchased over 10 Asus boards and have always had good experience with them. This one would be my first disappointment. The system will not start up properly about 1 out of every 15 power-ons. When this occurs the system will not post and the fans will be blowing at full throttle but nothing will appear on the screen. A hard restart will usually fix it and it would be fine for awhile. The other issue is shutting down, the system would turn on by itself when I clearly chose to shut down. However, I am unable to confirm that the second issue is the mobo's fault as this could be triggered by drivers or applications. Updating my BIOS have introduced more problems now that my memory will not take the timings which I have successful configured with the original BIOS. The command rate of my memory was set to 1T and with the BIOS updates I can only use 2T. And you cannot revert to older BIOS. Overall, I don't think this model is fault but rather I just got unlucky this time

Other Thoughts: I'm a fan of Asus and Gigabyte. After this incident I think I will explore other brands such as DFI.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Board!

Pros: This baby is very fast and handles about everything you would want (except SLI for video cards). Tons of connection types and handles internal and external SATA drives. The dual gigabit LANs are great!

Cons: The setup CD has a utility to update the BIOS from their website. Never worked for me. Had to download and install manually (using the Windows utility--nice).

Other Thoughts: This board supports all of the latest INTEL CPUs. You'll need a BIOS update to support 45mm CPUs (as of 08/01/2008). Installed with Q6600, 4MB of RAM, Windows XP MCE. I used a Cooler Master case.

5 out of 5 eggsP5E GREAT MB

Pros: Great performance and easy to set up. Setting up the RAID Array was exceptionally easy worked first time and still is working. Nice utilities provided by Asus. Overall a very reliable, fast setup, and easy to update BIOS, etc.

Cons: Sound card supplied by Asus was evidently a third party effort and did not fit well. Had to jury rig a installation which was fairly easy to do. No other cons.

Other Thoughts: Went with the P5E which supports DDR2 memory for reliability which is what I have. Thought DDR3 memory was a little unreliable at this stage of DDR3 developement. Running Vista64 w. 2MB memory and get great performance.

Pros: Ok when working.

Cons: Very unstable. Bios settings change themselves. BSOD related to drives. Locks up when running more than 1 app. External SATA does not work with Seagate FreeAgent Pro Backup drive. I will RMA as soon as Gigabyte board gets here.
