1 out of 5 eggsAlways a glitch when I buy Asus Motherboards

Pros: No Pros. I have an Intel Q6600 quad core (2.4Ghz), Geil Memory GB24GB8500C5DC DDR2 (2 x 2GB), and Western Digital WD400AAKS-00A7B0 400GB hard drive with this motherboard.

First Problem:

When I do a cold boot (i.e. hit the "on" switch), I hear the power supply fan whir for about 2 seconds, then, it stops, as if it is turned off. Then, 5 seconds later, without touching anything, normal startup resumes. I've had a few Asus motherboards in the past and this has NEVER happened.

Cons: Second Problem:

I have a dual boot setup with Linux GRUB loader to select either Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux. If I try to boot into Linux, I get the following error message:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

My name is Jany and it's my pleasure to help you with your problem.

1. Have you set CPU settings in BIOS? It seems to be normal for the platform, please do not worry.
2. If you boot from Windows OS, could the PC work well? If yes, seems there is something wrong with the Linux OS, about Linux support, you need to contact Linux vendor for a further check.

Best Regards,
Jany

I don't understand why there is a BIOS error when booting into Ubuntu Linux 9.0.4. Tried to reinstall Ubuntu several times, same result. I mean, come on, Ubuntu runs on almost anything, so why won't it run with my build?

I always thought that Asus motherboards were the best. Unless they fix this problem to my satisfaction, I'm never going to buy Asus again.

5 out of 5 eggsLove this board!!

Pros: One vid card slot leaves two pci-e 1x slots, easy to install. Well documented. Works well with legacy IDE dvd burner and Floppy hardware and comes with pata cables, also came with expansion USB 2.0 and e-sata external connection.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: this was as easy as it gets... I dropped an extra 500 gig hd in the rig, which already had a 200 gig hd in it, and hooked up the expansion USB 2.0 with e-sata external connection so the customer can add a one TB external drive later. it runs the Ide dvd drive off the pata and hds off the sata with no conflicts. This board has a floppy connector and the hook up was painless... good board to do upgrades and refurbs with.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat motherboard!

Pros: At first there weren't any Windows 7 drivers, but their site has since been updated and the drivers are now available! OC my Quad from 2.66 to 3.1ghz with no problems what so ever!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Don't know why people bash this motherboard for not having Win7 drivers, Win7 is still in beta mode! I guess those people are a bit impatient for these drivers. I've been running this board with the drivers that came with Win7 and I didn't have any problems. I'm buying another board to use as my server!

3 out of 5 eggsNo drivers for Windows 7, but..

Pros: It has everything I wanted including RAID and FireWire. It even has Express Gate, which is a stripped down GUI Linux that you can boot into bypassing Windows.

Cons: No drivers for Windows 7 yet... Running the DVD says OS not supported and quits, no way to istal Vista drivers. I had to hack INI files to get the driver installation to work.
Onboard audio wasn't recognizing when the front inputs were plugged in so I had to download the drivers from Realtek, which unlike ASUS drivers worked in 7 and fixed the issue.
Express Gate does not work in RAID. No biggie as I wouldn't have probably used it much, although it would have been nice to have the option to use it.

Other Thoughts: I know W7 is still in RC, but the differences between the OSs aren't that great. At least they should let you attempt to load the Vista drivers.
Now that I have the driver issue figured out the MB is working great.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor customer service

Pros: Reliable and stable chipset.

Cons: Don't expect any support from ASUS. My experience RMAing motherboards with them were appalling. If you're after after sales support look for something else.

1 out of 5 eggsExtremely Dissapointed

Pros: Easy install

Cons: Died on me just past the 30 day return policy. It worked great to start, loaded it up with all the hardware. ran it a few days in a row, then didn't it use it for a while then went to turn it on and nothing. MOBO crashed. Swapped out every other component with known working ones, its definitely the motherboard. LAME!

Other Thoughts: Love ASUS but this board is a bad buy.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Bios Gimmick EPU

Pros: Overclocking crash is recoverable w/ restart. Micro-adjustment for cpu fsb, fsb strap, and voltages on cpu, chipset, and voltage cutoff. Q-connect. Phasers. Improvement concerning video/audio management (comparing 650i). Runs on first try.

Cons: HDD bandwidth SHRUNK! (comparing 650i) Only two fan speed settings in bios. Jumper crazy - a minor annoyance. CD didn't read? Softwares can be better. EPU and fan monitor useless while overclocked which is bad for a silent setup. Express-gate can be a security hazard. ProbeII monitor is a resource hog and should be more like Everest.

Other Thoughts: Good board for o.c.'er but whether it's worth the trouble is moot.

3 out of 5 eggsStay Away if using IDE

Pros: Easy to configure Overclocking options. Works well if you stick with SATA devices.

Cons: This MoBo is a pain if you are planning on installing IDE devices. I was trying in vain to boot off a CD from a IDE CD drive and Zilch. Couldn't install OS, nothing. This should be a given, I mean the specs mention that they support IDE right?

Other Thoughts: Once I found the issue, got a SATA Drive and installation was a breeze.

Machine specs: Q9550, 4GB Corsair (1066M), 750G WD, Corsair 650W PS

5 out of 5 eggsSolid after 9 months - but runs hot.

Pros: Overclocks easy, stable so far. Been running an e8400 at 3.8ghz for over 9 months. I was able to get above 4.0 stable but I wanted to leave the voltage alone.

Cons: Northbridge gets pretty warm even when not overclocked. It runs hotter than my CPU and easily climbs over 45C. If you use the ASUS pc probe the heat alarm starts going off after about 1 minute of gaming. It hasn't really been a problem though. From what I understand these just run warm.. My case has proper ventilation..

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome Board!

Pros: Very nice motherboard, easy to install, bios settings easy to read.

Cons: The back panel for the motherboard ports were not fitting in correctly making the board not aligning to the case screws. I had to rip off the cushion from the panel to make both fit correctly.

Other Thoughts: No problem so far!
