Shipped with the new AMD AM2+/AM2 socket, the Asus M3A78-EM allows you to elevate your rig beyond the standard limits with support for the Phenom FX/Phenom/Athlon 64 FX/Athlon 64 X2 and 45nm AMD Phenom II processors. Install up to 8GB of DDR2 memory with dual channel support to power through complex operations, and Hyper Transport 3.0 technology massively increases the CPU bandwidth at lower power levels for cooler operation.

The board features the AMD 780G chipset with an integrated ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics adapter. A PCI-Express x16 slot lets you add additional graphics horsepower, and supports ATI's Hybrid CrossFireX technology and DirectX 10, as well as HDMI output – letting you display your video on any HD flat-screen television. Because high-end video deserves equally high-end audio, you'll get 8 channels of HD audio.

Besides the PCI-Express x16 lane for the Hybrid CrossFireX, there is also a PCI-Express and 2 PCI slots for further system enhancements. Storage won't be a problem with five SATA 3Gb/s connectors.

  • newegg AMD AM2+ Processor Support The Asus M3A78-EM supports AM2 AMD processors including the Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64, Athlon FX and Sempron series as well as the latest AM2+ AMD processors.
  • newegg ATI Hybrid Graphics Technology Support Based on ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU technology, ATI Hybrid Graphics allows you to combine the performance of the HD3200 integrated GPU with an applicable ATI Radeon graphics card to bring enhanced gaming performance, productivity and power efficiency.
  • newegg SATA II with RAID Support The second generation SATA interface delivers up to 300Mb/sec transfer speed, doubling that of the first generation Serial ATA. The on-board five SATA II ports support RAID 0, 1, 10 and JBOD for better performance, enhanced data security, and flexible capacity upgrades.
  • newegg Multiple Video Outputs The Asus M3A78-EM supports multiple digital and analog display output interfaces - HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort and D-Sub so you can enjoy high-definition pictures and movies on various display devices.
  • newegg Asus EZ Flash 2 With Asus EZ Flash 2, simply press the pre-defined hotkey to launch this tool and update BIOS from a USB flash disk before entering the OS. You can update your BIOS only in a few clicks without preparing an additional floppy diskette or using an OS-based flash utility.

5 out of 5 eggsgoing strong since December, 2008

Pros: Reliable.

Cons: secondary heatsinked chipset on motherboard (copper heatsink... integrated gpu?) gets warm, so I glued a small 40mm fan onto it.

Other Thoughts: I bought the motherboard in late November for a complete system build. I have a very efficient power supply, a low watt cpu, and excellent case air flow. I'm going to blame all these factors on the current longevity (4 years, 4 months) of this motherboard.

5 out of 5 eggsStill going strong!

Pros: Next month (4/13), I will have had this board running mostly 24/7 for four years! Haven't had a problem yet. It's survived three CPUs (currently running a Phenom II x6 1090T) and three graphics cards (currently running a GTX 660 ti sc). I'll probably keep it until my next processor upgrade (which shouldn't be for quite awhile because the 1090T is a beast), or until it finally craps out, whichever comes first. DDR3 isn't enough of a reason to upgrade, IMO. The difference between DDR3 and DDR2 in gaming performance is a couple of FPS, at best.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: Owned this board for over 4 years and had no glitches what-so-ever. By far the best ASUS board I have ever used so far. I have 4 others that I built computers from and this is the most stable. I can play RIFT using the on-board GPU, at the lowest resolution and a fan, with just a bit of hiccup. Although it doesn't look graphicly pleasing, it does do a good job of keeping up.

Cons: Both heat sinks had to be re-greased soon after putting it to some stressing tests. I applied white instead of 'Arctic Silver' and so far has been flawless.

5 out of 5 eggsBoard works great, but think twice about an extended warranty from ServiceNet

Pros: Board runs great without any issues.

Cons: After just over three years, the motherboard failed due to an overheating problem with the computer in which it was installed (the exhaust fan in the back of the case stopped functioning and resulted in cooking the motherboard. I purchased a 2-year extended warranty from ServiceNet which turned out to be useless. See other thoughts for more information.

Other Thoughts: The warranty from ASUS on this motherboard is explicitly stated on both NewEgg's site and on the motherboard's box as being a three-year limited warranty. When I bought the two-year extended replacement warranty from ServiceNet, I was under the impression that this would extend the warranty coverage to five years. Unfortunately, two calls to ServiceNet show the extended warranty as having started only one year after having purchased this motherboard and ended three years after I purchased the motherboard from NewEgg. In other words, their "extended" replacement warranty is worthless as it ran alongside the last two years of the limited warranty supplied by ASUS and left me having to purchase a new motherboard after the manufacturer's limited warranty ran out. I will never purchase an extended warranty from ServiceNet again on any product that has a limited warranty of more than a year. Buyer beware!

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Reliable, affordable, quick enough for most

Cons: Isn't really for gaming or intense work

Other Thoughts: Most people aren't compiling hash tables or database on these machines, but since it's the only box I've got for such a thing. It's decent, uptime is steady, I've never had a BSOD or BIOS problem. I do have issues with this mobo and WD HDDs

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Motherboard!

Pros: E-SATA, and all of the other features you could ever want in an AM2+/AM2 motherboard, not to mention the Pre-OS environment that ASUS pioneered, and which allows you access to the Internet before you even boot into Windows on your computer.

Cons: None whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this board to replace a defective XFX motherboard that had similar features. When I installed the motherboard and turned on the computer, it allowed me to boot up into Windows XP, and update the chipset drivers in order to account for the minor chipset differences between this board and the other. No reformat and reinstall required!
