Tricky HDMI Audio, Hybrid SLI drivers in Vista x64
- Pros: Fantastic feature set. Combined MB Audio and Graphics through HDMI out. Use either onboard 8k-series graphics or 2-way Hybrid SLI or PCIe graphics or PCIe SLI (3-way). That and AM2+ support means lots of growth options, out to a big display and for future 4-core apps. v6.0 BIOS has profile saves for quick reload. Dual CH mem + AM2+ should be fast (but see below). Arrangement of SATA/USB/Firewire/sound connectors around bottom edge give good cable mgmt and room for 3 big video cards. FP connector stand-off is a nice touch for big fingers like mine. ATX back-panel is well-finished, matches my Antec Sonata II case well and no cut fingers on install. High quality capacitors and power mgmt means good potential for OC and keeps temps low for quiet fan rates.
Pretty good paper documentation, skip the MB driver CD elect. docs for the MB, they're generic and useless.
- Cons: The x64 drivers are uneven. Included MB drivers allowed HDMI HD audio, but Hybrid SLI and ACPI support required nVidia update. That(?) broke HDMI audio. Asus "support" is worthless. nVidia tried, but may have given up on me. Corsair TWIN2X4096-8500C5 Dual Channel won't run in "ganged" (DC) mode, only "unganged" at 1066. Vista core dumps. Asus tuning software doesn't recognize 780 chipset, so won't auto-tune.
Not all the fan headers seem to be SW controlled, but that may be my ignorance of a combo of BIOS + SW settings.
Small tip: it is possible to mis-connect the USB header, even though there is a guard around it, you can be two-pins off.
- Other Thoughts: I got this to build an HTPC which I also use to play occasional games. For this I use Hybrid mode and switch to an MSI 9800GTX+ card for games and shut it off (off! no power, no fan!) and use on-board 8k series card for Blu-Ray play. But I've been battling getting back my HDMI HD audio (used to work, now doesn't!) with the exact right driver stack w/o having to flatten the OS. 9550 OC'ed 5% out of the box w/stock fan & voltage. Onboard GPU OC'ed to 550 at stock volts. Haven't bumped PCIe graphics card...yet.
Note that if you go DC, 4GB is the max, even though the MB supports 8GB. Add more than 4GB and you can't get DC even out of the first sticks.
Note that Hybrid SLI support is limited to a couple of chipset/cards. Do your research!
I like this board--what works does so great--so four stars, but barely. The 780a drivers don't seem baked yet. I got used to XP and now with all this new hardware and Vista x64 I feel I'm in "Driver Hell" again. What is this, the mid-90s??
happiness in a green box
- Pros: lots of cool features, Definitely fast , good layout overall. the little mini os thing is pretty cool. the EZ flas thing is GREAT..... This is a great great high end board. I was leary about switching to asus from MSI Being a PC tech i swore off asus a long while back because their customer service sucks so bad. BUT that doesnt change the fact that they do make some of the BEST boards out there. including this one!!! lots of accessories with this board.. the back panel shield is very high quality , nicest one i have seen ever!! memory slots are moved up high enough that your video card does not hit them like my previous msi board which has 2 broken memory clips. so also 16x16 SLI is a sweet sweet thing.
- Cons: well this board seems kinda touchy... POST is slower compared to what i am used to. Bios is not that great , lots of options , some of them do not work, some just have no explanation at all. but not explaining bios options is universal to mobo manufacturers these days.
- Other Thoughts: 5 eggs great board. Thank G O D i dont have to call asus about anything. will be faster once i get a phenom but i am waiting until the next gen phenoms come out. running dual 9800GT video cards from nvidia 4GB OCZ reaper memory and ATHLON X2 5600+ with 2MB cache with xp pro x64 and RAID 0 =) did i say 5 eggs?

Great Out Of The Box
- Pros: Feature packed. Tons of SLI, USB, and 2 Firewire. Flash BIOS right from BIOS menu. Internet Access without logging into OS. Runs with my Phenom II x4 940 no problems. I only just set this up, but it's the easiest ever, absolutely no problems or even questiontioning of anything.
- Cons: None so far, but I have only owned it for a day.
- Other Thoughts: Installed the board and popped in my Athlon Dual Core 6000+, my 4 GB memory, keyboard, and mouse and booted with no issue. Took 15 minutes. Burned latest BIOS on CD-R, popped it in and successfully flashed BIOS right from the BIOS Tools menu. Swapped out the Athlon Dual Core 6000+with a Phenom II x4 940, booted, and no problems what so ever. 25 minutes total.
Good Mother Board
- Pros: Works very well, managed to fit it into a micro atx box, works great for SLI
- Cons: Sata connectors are hard to reach in a micro atx box:/
- Other Thoughts: Worth every penny
AWESOME MOBO!!!
- Pros: Not sure if theres anything to NOT list as a PRO. I may be out of touch a bit but I think a newbie tech/pc-builder would benefit from this board even.
- Cons: none whatsoever, if anyone else listed a con... don't listen because they obviously don't know what they're talking about.
- Other Thoughts: Yeah i'm writing this review VERY late, and I didn't buy mine from Newegg (UGH!! I should have! Would have saved a BUNCH! But i tell you what. This is one MEAN board, its a bit outdated right now, but who gives a hoot, i can game with the best of them (specially once i get an Nvidia 300 series card coming out sometime end of this year). But even if you aren't gaming, this is a great board all around. You cannot go wrong with Asus, Nvidia, and NEWEGG!!
on a side note, i built a PC for my wife, which she uses VERY little, and its a PIECE OF TRASH!!! Asus M2A VM HDMI board and the FREAKING video went out on it (not completely, but no RED on video, so its green and blue, and the sound went kerplunk in vista 64, only works in XP 32 bit now which is about as useless as a 386 for her (needs to use PC for autocad so 64bits + 4+GB of ram is VERY NICE). Yeah she can do her stuff on a 32bit OS but its nowhere as fast. Word of advice from someone with decades of experience. SAY NO TO AMD
