Update
- Pros: See my earlier review.
- Cons: HDMI output definitely has a noise problem. After posting my earlier review, I saw Briggs' review. Taking his advice, I bought (an overpriced) DVI to HDMI adapter locally, moved my TV to the DVI output, and the every-one-second tiny horizontal lines flashing on the TV were gone. The picture, still 1080p is flawless.
- Other Thoughts: So - there is something going on with the HDMI output, but there is a reasonable solution. Others are not reporting this, so it could be instance-specific. I am running Windows 7 and not experiencing the black screens or other issues seen elsewhere. However, when I turned off the TV and turned it back on, the HDMI output would cause the video to switch modes from 1080p to something like 1024x680 (a 4x3 aspect ratio). Switching the TV inputs away from the HTPC and back fixed it. At the low resolution, there would be dropouts occasionally.
Thus far, the DVI->HDMI setup does *not* exhibit this problem. Fingers crossed.

Generally pleased
- Pros: Features, nice media center choice
- Cons: Video noise?
- Other Thoughts: With the exception of one problem, this has been a good board. In a Silverstone media case, the northbridge/video does not seem to get overly hot.
I have one issue, and I'm not 100% sure where the problem lies. I see video noise (a flash of some lines) over the HDMI connection to the TV. Oddly, there is exactly a one-second periodicity to the noise. You can hold up a clock with a second hand and synchronize the two. I've moved cables around trying to defeat or at least find the source of the noise with no luck.
I have not attached a standard computer display to see if it's there, too. (Have tried other HDMI cables.) I hesitate to ding this board until I can be sure it's responsible.
Decent Board, Some Shortcomings
- Pros: Good performance, ASUS BIOS is always a pleasure to use. The onboard sound and video are pretty good for being on-board. The addition of the display port is quite nice to find on a motherboard.
- Cons: In Windows 7, the HDMI output on my board causes graphics flickers. At 1080p there's lines that flicker every 1/2 second, roaming up the screen. I have the latest BIOS. I've updated all chipset, graphics, and sound drivers to the latest from their respective manufacturers. Strange there is no flicker while loading windows until it actually gets into the Windows screen. If it were an ungrounded input adapter, I'd think I'd see it in the loading screens too, but I don't - which makes me think it's driver related. However, I can find no other complaints of this issue online for this board.
Other cons: No firewire port. Board is pricey. XP won't install on this board out of the box (BSOD after loading drivers for install, but before selecting a HDD partition). Board is slightly shorter than the standard Micro ATX, which causes the board to bend when connecting power adapters since there's no ability to screw in that last column of screws to secure it to the case tray.
- Other Thoughts: I had to run a DVI cable to an HDMI adapter to my 1080p LCD TV in order to eliminate the flickering graphics lines. I was pleasantly surprised to find this board outputs sound on the DVI cable. However, there's still a bit of an issue with the sound this way - the first 1/4 second of sounds appear to be dropped. Not an issue when watching a movie or TV since it's only the first 1/4 of the sound that you lose, so it's not a huge issue for me. But I notice it when windows boots, and with IM programs especially, with incoming message sounds.
If the board were cheaper I'd give it a higher egg rating, but for the high pricetag, I don't feel like you're getting your money's worth here with all the issues therein.
