5 out of 5 eggsMOBO is awesome

Pros: this board is awesome. Build consists of dual GTX 480 SLI config, 6 GB ram overclocked to 1600mhz, core i7 930 overclocked to 4ghz. Crucial Real C300 SSD. It has been running great for over 2 years. I also got a USB 3.0 and sata 6gbps PCIe add-in card so it has everything I needed.

Cons: no USB 3.0 or sata 6gbps but you can get an asus add-in card for those.

Other Thoughts: no 1394 but who needs firewire

1 out of 5 eggsSeverely disappointed

Pros: Well featured

Cons: This board has been severely unreliable and ASUS' customer support is not very good. I will not buy another product from them again.

Other Thoughts: I've owned this motherboard since 2010. I'm now going through my 3rd RMA with ASUS. I bought this board because of ASUS' reputation for quality and the features offered by the board. I also bought the board because it was touted as having great potential for overclocking; I suspect that this is not the case considering it can't even run at factory settings.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issue you had with the motherboard.

Can you tell me about the problems, reliability-related or otherwise you've had with this motherboard, original and replacements? If you'd like me to look into it, please contact me at cl0benson@asus.com reference #C1037-3941.

5 out of 5 eggs(3) Boards Running Strong for (2) Years!

Pros: We have used these boards in our video editing workstations for (2) years without a single glitch. Most reliable boards we have ever owned. Numerous 8-lane & 16-lane PCIe slots allowed us to add hardware RAID, Blackmagic Decklink, large video card, etc.

I build all of our workstations and therefore am responsible if something goes wrong... I have been very pleased with how well these workstations have performed. We will continue to use them in lesser roles for many years as we add new Socket 2011 based workstations to the fleet...

Cons: No onboard firewire, so we had to waste a PCIe slot to add a firewire card. The good thing was that we could pick a good TI based FW card vs. relying on an onboard solution that may/may not be compatible with all of our gear...

These were designed before 6gb/s SATA, USB 3.0, etc. so they do not have some of the new features that modern motherboard have...

It was tricky to setup the onboard RAID and still have AHCI for hot-swap drives but numerous forums helped to explain how to do this. You just setup the RAID initially in bios and then switch over to AHCI to boot from a non-raid drive...

Other Thoughts: Now that Socket 2011 is here these workstation class 1366 motherboards will soon become obsolete. If ASUS makes a workstation-class motherboard based on Socket 2011, I will definitely choose ASUS over other brands. Very, very happy with our choice 2 years ago.

5 out of 5 eggsTwo-year review of use and customer support

Pros: Board met all expectations for two-years - couldn't have asked for a better board. ASUS has done an exellent job of keeping BIOS and other drivers up-to-date on this board - few companies do this these days. I value this as an important part of my decision to purchase a product. Some manufacturers have great products but don't support driver updates - I've don't even consider buying a product from them.

Cons: SATA in position two failed just after two years - was running RAID-1 configuration. Tried ASUS website to get repaired under warrenty - will never use the website again - ASUS may have a great motherboard but they have one of the worst "customer friendly" websites.

Had a very difficult time getting through calling. Once got through customer service was excellent. The one I talked to "Andrea" did a fantastic job. ASUS, you've got a great product but have to get a better method of handling customer calls - maybe triage or something so that people aren't tied up so long.

Was told there would be a ten-day turn-around. Sure enough it was ten-days exactly. Put the board back in and it has ran fine for the past two months.

One thing I still don't like is that when the board was returned to me there was nothing but the board in the box - no explination of what was wrong or what was done. Sure would have been nice to have had some feedback?

Other Thoughts: To everyone - If you call ASUS the first thing they are going to ask is for the motherboard serial number. It's on the underside of the board - had to take everything out of the case to get it. From now on I'm going to write the serial number in the manual before installing the board - or any other component.

2 out of 5 eggsSolid board when works. Horrible Customer service and RMA process

Pros: This is a solid motherboard when it works. Overclocking and all.

Cons: I have encountered an issue with using Areca 1220 RAID card though, I had to downgrade the BIOS to the lowest possible version, otherwise the card is not detected. And this downgrade is not a straightforward act either, since you have to get your hands on the engineering version of BIOS flash utility to do that. It took me a long time to figure this out.
But this is not the biggest problem with this card. It seems like this motherboard is just of bad quality all around.
I have bought it originally in 2009 for the new system I was building. So all the components were new. For half of the year I was debugging the issues daily, since I was getting blue screens about once a day. I've changed my power supply, memory, video card. At the end I narrowed the problem down to motherboard. I RMAed it in, got a replacement and the problem was solved, except for one thing... The USB ports were not functioning.

Other Thoughts: I was really angry, called ASUS up and they actually cross shipped another replacement (card number 3). I've installed it and all the problems went away... But just a week ago something happened again, my Ethernet port has died, and one of my PCIe ports went bad. I run with two video cards, so the reason I know it, is that I switch the cards around and different cards on the same port give me issues. The issues are, HDMI port does not work and the DVI port shows a very dim picture.
I am in the RMA process again, ASUS is again refusing to cross ship, saying they don't have cards in stock (somehow they will have it stock when they get my in). Given, that they are in CA, and I am in NJ the whole exchange would take 2-3 weeks, which is not something I can do. I am considering buying a new motherboard (NOT ASUS), going through the RMA process and selling the replacement. Not something I want to do or have time to do, but ASUS puts me in this position.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issue you had with the motherboard and with our customer service quality. We are trying to improve our services so that you have receive replacement/repairs faster with less downtime and faster processing.

Since BIOS was downgraded to an older version, please remember to reload BIOS defaults to clear existing settings. Regarding the ethernet, when you plug in an ethernet cable does the amber/orange light go on? Can you verify that the port is not functional by using another ethernet cable?
Please also check the PCIe ports so make sure that there's no dust/debris inside the slots that could cause it to not function. When you used either video cards or another video card, do you not get picture on HDMI and low brightness on DVI port? Are you using an adapter that converts video signals?

To continue support, please contact me at cl-benson@asus.com reference #C1037-2004 with case # if available, RMA #, and system parts and specs.

Regards,
Benson

5 out of 5 eggsCan't Complain

Pros: Solid features, layout is exceptional, won't run out of PCI-e x16 slots :)
Handles high-performance workloads like nothing else I've ever used. Able to OC my i7-920 from 2.66 to 3.8GHz, running stable for over a year at that speed.

Cons: Pricey, but you get what you pay for, especially with a workstation-class motherboard from ASUS.

Other Thoughts: Buy it! you won't regret it!
