2 out of 5 eggsDon't buy if you want Raid w/sata DVD

Pros: Good Overclocker board. Lots of options

Cons: Unfortunatly the Lots of options are poorly written and implimented. If you want a board to overclock and not setup Raid or the hokey Drive Xpert software and you don't need more than 5 Sata ports, then this is the board for you. I tried to set this up with Win7 pro 64 bit with a 3 drive RAID0 and 2 drive RAID 1 backup and what a nightmare. The only way I could install Windows was with a external DVD drive. If I installed with the Sata DVD, as soon as I loaded the Raid driver, it would no longer see the DVD or pull files off of it. I had to pull it out of the chain entirely and install with a external drive. Once the OS was installed I tried to create the Raid 1 set with Drive Xpert. It seems the only thing that can see the drives is that software. Windows does not recognize the partition and so it is unavailable to Windows. Once it was set up, POST takes about 2 minutes since the Drive Xpert partition is not recognized by the bios either.

Other Thoughts: I tried to set up a simple 5 disk raid 5 array but it seems that any time I try to use the 6th orange Sata connector, I cannot get the system to work correctly. If you ask me Asus really shot themselves in the foot trying to put the hokey port mutiplier on the ICH10r's 6th port. If you have a legasy IDE DVD drive, you probably would be ok with this board, Otherwise run cause you will have nothing but trouble.

4 out of 5 eggsRebate Horseplay

Pros: Have purchased several of the P5 series and love their simplicity.

Cons: So far the rebate due from this one purchased in April 2010 has not been paid. My $10 or less rebates get paid fairly...but the $20 ones are some slooooooooooooooooo pays and quite suspect! Lose an EGG!

Other Thoughts: If rebate is clear purchase factor.... think twice.

1 out of 5 eggsAnother disappointed review

Pros: Simple. The advertised features.

Cons: Simple. The advertised features don't actually work as advertised. I also own a p5q pro and for the last couple of years it has been a rock. Does what it is supposed to. I figured this board would do the same PLUS give me a few upgrades for a new system. NOT. First off, it wouldn't boot up with my full 8GB of G.Skill DDR 800 OR my wireless Logitech USB mouse and keyboard. After waiting 15 mins or so for it too boot the first time I came to read some reviews to see if I was alone and found others had the same issues. I took 6GB out and jacked a standard keyboard and mouse from my kids Edubuntu box and it booted like a champ. Yippee. I installed Vista and the mobo drivers and gave it another shot with the full mem and usb keyboard and mouse and it booted successfully from then on. It has one less (really 3 if you count those 2 useless ports) sata port and doesn't seem to want to work in RAID AND have a boot drive at the same time. Go figure.

Other Thoughts: Nothing I try seems to work with this board to get it to put 4 of my drives into RAID 0 and leave the other drives a boot and backup drives. I'm writing this review because it sucks that I have to downgrade my Cubase DAW back to the p5q pro mobo so that I can run my RAID 0 audio drive AND have a boot drive at the same time. It's rediculous. And this board came with the latest bios version already installed. Thinking about trying a downgraded version but don't want to wast more time than I have to by just "trying" stuff to get it too work. I figure that I don't need to run a raid drive setup on my office/internet box so I'll swap mobo's BACK. Then I'll be able to run my 4 sata 3g 500GB drives in raid 0 again and have my boot and backup drive capabilities back again. Shame. I'm "giving" this board 1 egg because I can't give it 0. None of the advertised features mean a thing if it can't do the basics - let alone what it's advertised as.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't like 4 DIMMs

Pros: It's a stable Intel chipset with some decent features. It also runs the northbridge and CPU about 10C cooler than my old motherboard.

Cons: 4 DIMM configuration does not work above DDR2-800. The board advertises up to 16 GB of RAM up to DDR2-1200 or something but no matter what you do, my 8 GB of Corsair DDR2-1066 RAM in 4x2GB configuration does not work unless I put it to DDR2-800 or take out 2 chips.

Motherboard manufacturer blamed the memory and the memory manufacturer blamed the motherboard.

I am stuck trying to tweak it myself to work but haven't found settings that stabilize it.

Other Thoughts: Should be advertised that 4 DIMM configuration not supported above DDR2-800.

2 out of 5 eggsFollow-Up

Pros: This is some add-on info to my original review a few down titled "Asus Has Let Me Way Down"

* No matter what, if you want 8GB on all 4 dimms, get at last 800 mhz matching modules, do *not* go 667 mHz... Not discouraging you, just an FYI...

Good board nder the right circumstances, absolutely unforgivably poor memory quirks and claims... Period.

Cons: Everything I said before still stands. After numerous attempts at meeting the memory reqs on this board, I finally gave up (300 later)

In the BIOS while looking for the magic settings I found in a description for one of the settings a charming little statement that using 4 DDR2 at 667 mHz may cause the board to *NOT BOOT*

- It didn't say it in the manuals
- Didn't say it on the site
- Didn't say it in the product descriptions
- Didn't say it on the memory QVL list
- Didn't say it in the latest documentation for the board

it *only* said it in a buried BIOS setting's description off to the far side of the screen...

Again, this amounts to the fact that this board simply does not support configurations that it claims to support...

Asus has been my pet company for a loooong time, but leaving a customer to have to find this out reflects very poorly on Asus' present direction...

Other Thoughts: Newegg is at no fault, I'd like for them to note this some where though, as it has led to much misery with many owners as I have discovered in my weeks long research on this board...

I'm going to RMA this and the memory I bought for it, and get an Asus i7 rig in the hopes that this was just the 1/100 computer builds that is simply cursed...

5 out of 5 eggsSweet board for the price

Pros: Supports all socket 775 CPUs - heatpipe cooling on the chipset keeps everything chilly even when overclocked. EZ Flash is awesome, makes flashing the BIOS from a thumb drive super fast and simple. Plenty of options for tweaking and overclocking for enthusiasts.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Currently have the following system set up and it's smooth as butter:

Core2Quad Q9400 @ 3.72Ghz (465x8)
EVGA GTX 465 SC @ 800/1600/1725
WD Caviar Black 500GB SATA
Sony Optiarc combo DVD-R/RW & CD-R/RW SATA
LiteOn DVD/CD-R/RW SATA
Antec 300 case
Antec TPQ 850 modular PSU
8GB (2GB x 4) Kingston PC6400 (DDR2 800)

Runs like a dream compared to my old Opteron 170 system

2 out of 5 eggsAsus Has Let Me Way Down

Pros: Features, Flexibility, Range of components, SSD compatibility, all-around brilliant package of features. Asus has been my fav for many many years...

Cons: This board is so ridiculously twitchy about memory that it negates every positive aspect about it...

It is unfair and I'd even say false advertising for Asus to say this is a 16 GB board, or *even* a genuine 8 GB board... The range of memory you could put into it to get 8 GB out of it is so narrow that it's pretty much non-existent. Most of it isn't even available any more...This is a problem because unless you use those (and even if you do) this board is pretty much useless... Unless you want to go 2 or 4 GB, (and those days are over kids, that's the minimum get-by for 64 bit days)

Basically, this board is 8 GB if you hack away, get lucky, mod the BIOS, throw a virgin or two into the volcano...

Otherwise, good luck...

I'm RMA-ing mine (Thanks Newegg) in hopes that a miracle will happen... but as I research this more, the more I see that it may be hopeless...

Asus was not very straightforward about what they made here.... and for that alone two eggs is generous..

Other Thoughts: It looks good, I know... and you might be thinking about how well it could suit you... But it won't and for this price, you can do a lot better a lot cheaper...

In short, just don't do it... I regret the choice and wish I'd just avoided the whole scene...

3 out of 5 eggsWas working good...

Pros: Plug and play easy to install and setup. Plenty of onboard USB and SATA ports to work with. Worked great with my Quad Core 9550 64bit CPU and 8gb DDR2

Cons: Had for just over a year and it died. It also had issues with not booting with USB drives plugged in.

Other Thoughts: I've ordered this again since it did work well while it did. I'm not sure of the cause of it's failure. I shut the pc down during a storm and all was fine, unplugged it from power and network, an hour later it wouldn't come back on. PSU tested fine on another system and another PSU was used to test this Mobo with no success.

1 out of 5 eggsnewegg selling used as new

Pros: Motherboard works just fine but I received a used / open box unit. When I pay to buy a new one I expect to get a new one. The motherboard had fingerprints all over it and the stickers were peeled and re-attached (presence of fingerprints on the sticky side!). The manual and the CD cover were torn and curled at the edges, obviously meaning used.

Cons: Never thought newegg would indulge in something like this but googling the issue revealed this is not uncommon...the horror!. Just google "newegg selling used as new", there is even a youtube video about this issue. I used to trust newegg more than the best online retailer (the brazilian rainforest), but from now on I am going to get my PC components from the Brazilian rainforest.

Other Thoughts: Carefully examine the products you buy from newegg once it arrives. Look for tampered packaging, broken seal, and fingerprints. Don't get ripped by newegg.
