5 out of 5 eggsSmallBusinessServer2008

Pros: running (2) Xeon E5504 with 24G of RAM in 2 banks of 12G.
Dual Raid configuration (WD RE4 series) OS and Data with additional drive for Sharepoint data. Antec 900 series case.

Cons: None. Flawless from the start.

Other Thoughts: Box has been up and running 24/7 since Dec. 09 without an issue. Could not be more satisfied.

5 out of 5 eggsGets the Job Done

Pros: Serial Port, 2 NICs and Wake on Lan means it's fully remotely-controllable, perfect for workstations that also need remote access or to act as servers.

Performance is as good as you would expect.

No unnecessary features getting in the way. BIOS is full of useful options, and can be accessed from serial port for fully headless operation.

Cons: No sound, which is slightly annoying if you're using it as a workstation. Has an expansion slot for a soundcard which is apparently sold separately.

1 out of 5 eggsGOOD LUCK WITH THIS PIECE OF JUNK

Pros: If you are lucky enough to get RAM modules that are accepted by this board (dispite the specs), then it's worth the money. I installed this specific board for the first time 8 months ago for a server and it's been working flawlessly (little did I know that I had gotten lucky). 10 days ago I ordered 2 of these units for 2 new servers, and that's when the real trouble started. Unfortunately the specs posted by ASUS are FAR from correct or accurate. Most memory modules will NOT work on this board even though the specs (and tech support too) claim that they are. BE READY TO GAMBLE if you buy this board.

Cons: Ordered 2 of these for 2 servers. Ordered same CPU “Intel Xeon E5520 Nehalem 2.26GHz LGA 1366 80W Quad-Core” (fully compatible with this model motherboard as per ASUS specs) and different RAM: first had Patriot Signature 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) SDRAM ECC Registered; latter had Crucial 6GB (3 x 2GB) SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) ECC Registered. Again all this specs are confirmed by ASUS. NEITHER BOARD would boot up or POST! I swapped CPU sockets, memory sticks, memory slots, both processors, and power supply. NOTHING would make these 2 boards POST or boot. Called ASUS and asked for their opinion. First they said both boards were busted! Then they acknowledged that they both needed a BIOS upgrade to accept those memories EVEN THOUGH THEY BOTH ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE RAM I GOT! Problem: can’t do a BIOS upgrade if you can’t even POST. They asked that I ship the new boards to them to get it done. UNBELIEVABLE! I RMA’d the 2 boards for full refund

Other Thoughts: One more thing: before I RMA's borh boards back, I even borrowed from a nother server 3 sticks of Wintek 12GB (3 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) SDRAM ECC Registered just to make sure there was no way I could prevent this RMA from happening and having to wait for 2 new boards to come in; even this third set of memory got rejected. I have always been an ASUS guy; I've been building high-performance PCS and server for over 20 years and I hate to admit that ASUS products are not always worth the money and time.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice board

Pros: Two Processors :)
Plenty of memory slots for a home or small business server.

Cons: Processors sockets are really close together. I had to purchase a second set of fans becuase I could not tell from the photograph how close they are together.
I had to buy an expansion board becuase I put 6 drives in my system.

Other Thoughts: My Server build is as follows:
Rosewill RSV-R4000 Case
Asus Z8NA-D6C MB (of course)
2x Intel Xeon E5606 Westmere-EP 2.13GHz
2x Noctua NH-U9DX 1366 (Fits like a glove on the board)
4x Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 KVR1333D3D4R9S/8G
6x Western Digital RE4 2TB Drives
SYBA PCI SATA II Controller Card (For additional ports)
LG Blu-Ray Drive

This build works together well and everything except the SYBA controller card was automatically recognized by Windows Server 2008 R2.
Running in Raid 1 it gives me 6TB of storage space for music, movies, Iphone Apps, Kendel Files, Email, etc.. I run a lot of services out of my home. It also helps me keep my files in reach while I am on the road.

5 out of 5 eggsNo complaints.

Pros: Good Bios interface with options to change just about anything you can think of. Ran a E5620 out of the box without issue so I guess the boards they are shipping now are the updated ones.

Cons: Challenging MB to work with in a lot of ways. The ram is close to the cpu sockets so the choice of heatsinks is limited. I ended up cramming coolermaster hyper 212s in with minor modification. The screws on the bracket need to be pulled off and the springs removed, then put a 1/8" ID washer on them and they screw right in. The heat pipes on one side ended up just touching the closest DIMM and I used ram without heat spreaders and just put a layer of electrical tape on the heat pipe to keep it from causing shorts (ghetto solution but functional). The other issue I ran into was related to the case I used. The 24 pin and 8 pin power cables plug in at the top and with a case that put the power supply at the bottom, I ended up needing extensions.

5 out of 5 eggsI would buy another

Pros: Solid as a rock. Other posts say you need a flash to get the new Xeon's working. Mine worked out of the box. Not one crash on this board yet. Beat the tar out of it (ran in hot rooms, cpu maxed out for almost a week, etc) not one issue.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsWhitebox ESXi

Pros: Mine came ready for my E5620. Everything on it appears to work with my install of ESXi 4.1u1.

Cons: None. Supported memory list was pretty short at the time of purchase, so you might have to gamble with RAM.

Other Thoughts: Built a whitebox ESXi machine with this, a E5620, Kingston KVR1333D3S4R9SK3/6G, and an Intel RS2WC040 RAID controller. Smooth sailing so far. Looking forward to expanding this when I get some more $$$.

5 out of 5 eggsIn the box 6 months

Pros: Running Duel 5640s and sporting 24 GB 1333 DDR3. This board has been a rock. Received it with the updated BIOS and worked flawless from boot. Great for a workstation box due to the standard ATX form factor. This is my 6th or 7th board from ASUS and I've yet to have a failure. Newegg service was great as always.

Cons: No overclocking, no SLI\Crossfire as it only has a single PCIe X16 slot.

Other Thoughts: If you're on a budget and don't require server level storage options, namely SAS, you can't go wrong with this board.

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible Customer Service

Pros: Other than what everybody else has written? None.

Cons: Doesn't support X5680. Read on...

Other Thoughts: Called ASUS before putting together my system...asked about each part just to verify that they will work. The tech on the other line told me that the memory would work, my FirePro V8800 will work, and my Xeon X5680 will work. Well, he was DEAD WRONG. After putting the workstation together it turned on but had no video. Tried to boot it without the GFX card same thing. Tried booting it without the Memory and got no beeps. Called ASUS again and was told that if the memory didn't beep, something was wrong with the CPU. Then he tells me that the X5680 isn't supported...so now I have to return it and wait until I get the X5670, which I was assured on multiple occasions will work.

Newegg was very helpful with the return process. I just wish they did exchanges for other products.

I am going to take a guess that the reason the X5680 doesn't work is because it's 130W compared to the other supported chips which are at most 95W.
