Equipped with the new AMD AM3 socket, the Asus M4A78-EM allows you to elevate your rig beyond the standard limits with support for the next-generation 45nm AMD Phenom II processors. Install up to 16GB of DDR2 memory with dual channel support to power through complex operations, and Hyper Transport 3.0 technology massively increases the CPU bandwidth at lower power levels for cooler operation.

The board features the AMD 780G chipset with an integrated ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics adapter. A PCI-Express x16 slot lets you add additional graphics horsepower, and supports ATI's Hybrid CrossFireX technology and DirectX 10, as well as HDMI output – letting you display your video on any HD flat-screen television. Because high-end video deserves equally high-end audio, you'll get 8 channels of HD audio.

Besides the PCI-Express x16 lane for the Hybrid CrossFireX, there is also a PCI-Express and 2 PCI slots for further system enhancements. Storage won't be a problem with five SATA 3 Gb/s connectors. Asus EPU technology delivers system-wide power efficiency by intelligently adjusting power in real time to ensure the best power management.

  • newegg Socket AM3 Processor Support The Asus M4A78-EM supports the latest-generation AMD Socket AM3 processors including the AMD Phenom II X3 and AMD Phenom II X4 processor, as well as AM2 and AM2+ processors including the AMD Phenom, AMD Athlon and AMD Sempron series.
  • newegg ATI Hybrid Graphics Technology Support Based on ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU technology, ATI Hybrid Graphics allows you to combine the performance of the HD3200 integrated GPU with an applicable ATI Radeon graphics card to bring enhanced gaming performance, productivity and power efficiency.
  • newegg SATA II with RAID Support The second generation SATA interface delivers up to 300MB/sec transfer speed, doubling that of the first generation Serial ATA. The on-board five SATA II ports support RAID 0, 1, 10 and JBOD for better performance, enhanced data security, and flexible capacity upgrades.
  • newegg HDMI Output The Asus M4A78-EM features an HDMI output for connection to your high-definition video equipment. With the HDMI interface ensuring lossless transmission of high-quality HD video signals, play back HD contents on your computer and view them on your large HDTV set for more comfort.
  • newegg Asus EZ Flash 2 With Asus EZ Flash 2, simply press the pre-defined hotkey to launch this tool and update BIOS from a USB flash disk before entering the OS. You can update your BIOS only in a few clicks without preparing an additional floppy diskette or using an OS-based flash utility.
  • newegg Power Efficiency Asus exclusive EPU (Energy Processing Unit) technology digitally monitors the CPU power and intelligently scales power up and down according to the work load for extreme energy efficiency.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good board

Pros: Very nice onboard Graphics. Bios Setup is very easy

Cons: Lack of Firewire port for my external devices. had to go to USB.

Other Thoughts: I bought this board back in November of 2009. Have had it for a while now and i am pleased with the performance. Can run both World of Warcraft, a Music player, and several Chat programs at once without any issues.

4 out of 5 eggsFirst Build Was easy but wish I chose different board

Pros: The manual was an easy to understand. (thank you ASUS) The board was well labled and very easy to install.

Cons: My gripe is my own fault really. I didn't realize this board wasn't ACC so I can't Unleash my AMD Phenom II 550 BL like I wanted. But I've already bought it and installed it, so I guess I'm stuck with it. I just can't justify forking out for another board. Oh well, at least i was able to overclock it pretty easily.

Other Thoughts: I will absolutely buy ASUS again in the future, but will just do my homework better and get exactly what I need.

4 out of 5 eggsAnother BIOS-based review

Pros: Nice feature set for the price, great overclocking options, good placement of everything on the PCB.

Cons: The BIOS my motherboard was shipped with did not support the CPU I bought simultaneously, a Phenom II X2 550, a problem at least one other reviewer ran into as well. Had to bring it into a shop and have them flash the BIOS for me, because the board didn't support my previous CPU (an Athlon 64 X2) either. That cost me $25, somewhat negating the benefit of buying this one over another motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Working great so far otherwise.

5 out of 5 eggsA little heads up...

Pros: Asus quality. Full featured for being a MicroATX board.

Cons: A little hard when installing Windows XP with shipping BIOS.

Other Thoughts: I'm a technician at a computer repair shop. I would just like people to know that if they are getting a BSOD (Stop 0x7e) it is because of two reasons. SATA needs to be set to Compatibility mode, and BIOS needs to be updated.

I changed SATA to AHCI and I still got the BSOD. Turns out that with the latest BIOS (1010 I believe) when you change the SATA to IDE (They renamed it from AHCI) it works perfectly. Hopes this helps some of you guys out there.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I have 4 of these systems in my video lab, running Fedora 11 and another two running vistaa x64/sp2 and they are great performers.

Cons: No Firewire but that's expected at this price-point. One board need a flash before it would boot off a SATA DVD. Other than that, I have not had a single issue since the initial build dates.

Other Thoughts: Gonna buy a build a few more this spring

5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget board - just buy it

Pros: Great board layout, great performance, great support from Asus website, Bios is super easy to set up and update. Especially nice optical audio performance.

Cons: Express Gate should not be enabled by default. Could use two more USB ports on back.

Other Thoughts: This is a fantastic budget board for a small form factor. Windows 7 x64 on Phenom2 920 went without a hitch.

The SATA performance for my Intel x-25 SSD improved ~5% from a higher priced board that failed due to power issues.

5 out of 5 eggsThis upgrade was annoying

Pros: It improved my pc performance far beyond any thing i expected . It also looks really good the amount of ram it supports is insane though a 4gb stick is way to expensive for me to hit the 16gb mark

Cons: This isn`t the boards fault but it was way to big for my old case . i had to go to the local best buy and buy a new case which cost 70 bucks. Another problem i had which is the fault of the windows operating system after all the upgrades i added to my pc i had to completely reinstall the os because the pc wouldn`t / couldn`t recognize the new parts. and with the new case i needed a new power supply so the initial upgrade was full of headaches but future upgrades promise to be much easier so this upgrade got finished though i had to go way over budget

Other Thoughts: If 4gb memory sticks drop in price i will definitely buy some. Also make sure you do your homework on all parts before you but to avoid any and all surprises
