very straight forward
- Pros: this board replaced my five year old Intel D865PERL (which I think was a great board). installation was quite uneventful. the holes were aligned up pretty much the same way as the old one, maybe a few less. it has single PATA, and one IEEE1394 port which are important for me to transfer old files from old IDE disks as well as hooking up a sony DV-R camera
- Cons: the manual needs some work. since i build systems in every 4-5 years, i was concerned since i missed a power supply connection called EATX12V (1). not having this plugged in, there was no video and it was hard to troubleshoot. after looking carefully in the manual, it became obvious. but again this is me. if you are someone building systems every year and has better eye, it may not happen to you
- Other Thoughts: over all, a great board. has everything i need. the drivers were all there, win7 ultimate x64 bit recognized everything, except the sound device, but it got recognized after a windows update. nice quality card, it is clearly labeled. i kept in an 5 year old ATX case, but still works light a charm.
- Pros: seems to work fine
- Cons: After buying, I found articles about the foxconn socket issue. I wish this could have been fixed before so many were sold. I have not overclocked yet, but im about to. I hope it holds up.
Awe and Shock!
- Pros: Ample I/O ports. Tons of USB ports both front and back. Cool little PC spkr dongle included. Component and connector layout very logical and conveniently placed near MB edge for easy placement. Good performance. Easy install.
- Cons: Has debilitating SATA RAID limitation you don't find out about until you try to set up your RAID. A footnote in the manual tells you that due to a "chipset limitation" if you enable RAID, you must dedicate ALL SATA DRIVES to RAID. You cannot have one drive--say, from your last system--ported over and build a second drive from a RAID 5 made of 3 other SATA drives. This was easy enough to do on my last XFX MB w/NVIDIA chipset.
Second, the first time I enabled the RAID controller, the bios gave me a freedos utility screen to build a driver disk. There was no way to decline. It then requested a blank floppy disk with no way to back out. A floppy? Makes me wonder if ASUS knows what century it is. I had to reset the system 3 times before it stopped asking me for a floppy disk while booting and sometimes it still does it, even though I disabled the RAID controller.
- Other Thoughts: It is fast, well-stocked, and easy to install. Seems unsuitable for all but the most plain vanilla RAID situations. I would not have bought this MB had I known about the strange RAID implementation.
