1 out of 5 eggsGood Board-Super Poor Customer/tech Support

Pros: Works good. I have 10+ of these boards in use and I am using it in several ways, for eg. cluster, VmWare ESXi server, Server 2012 AD, Stand alone Ubuntu etc. All are working good ( RAID configurtion on Ubuntu was tricky but other then that everything else worked like charm with good performance)

Cons: Good Servermotherboard, but poor rating is for Worst customer service/support from Asus. I have more then 10 of these board in my inventory purchased on different time in last 3 years. All are working good except one went bad month ago. I called Asus tech support and learned that they have long wait time. Call would drop very frequently and you will be placed to queue again. Customer rep were not knowledgeable enough to help with issues. I asked replacement and was given two options.
- Advance replacement ( $4XX credit card hold and they will ship according to shipping charge I pay)
- I send it in advance and asus will repair it in 5 days and will send it back.
As its server and several users are affected, I paid overnight shipping with advance replcement and board did not showed up until week.(I had to call several time to get it shipped)
Whatever replacement came was not working. Once I put it together(with new power supply, nothing else attaached) motherboard gave popped sound and smoke came out and no display.
Upon calling Asus told me that they will replace board again and If I need advance replacement I will need to do cc info and hold again.
I have done that more then 10 days ago... I don't have my board yet in my hand.
Server is down for about a month now and no help...

They know this is server board but their support is poor then desktop component..............

As tech, anyone will need tech support from company.. I havent seen such a poor and slow support from any company yet as far as server component.

Other Thoughts: I would not buy anymore as I cant afford my server down for a month because of poor tech support. If they would have told me that don't expect from asus, I would have purchased new board and replaced bad but rep. would tell me it will come in two days and then nothing comes.....

5 out of 5 eggsThis is a great board, Rock Solid

Pros: Able to use Non-ECC RAM (number one plus)
Lots of headers for variable speed fans.
Regular firmware updates to support new processors.

Cons: PIKE is worthless. It costs a lot for the update and you might aw well just by a regular SAS card.
Takes a very long time to post.

Other Thoughts: I bought this board for a VMWARE lab a few years ago and it's been rock solid ever since. I put all variable speed fans in so its pretty dang quiet for a 16 core server.
I bought a cheap 2nd hand 2U server on an auction site and I couldn't even run the thing it was so loud!

2 out of 5 eggsASUS quality decreases over time

Pros: Excellent design for price...includes 2 CPU slots, for an agressive CPU up to 24 or 32 cores available with excellent speed if you have the $ to buy them....4 channels of memory per processor. Up to 256 GB of ECC Registered memory on board.

Cons: 2nd ASUS board to die on me. I have dell boards over 15 years old still running as nix server....
This board developed a disease that usually indicates dying power supply....sudden reboot with no warning and no BSOD. Can't see any bulging capacitors, but it has gotten worse....Pulled all accessories out of their slots, turned off processor #2 and then swapped processors out between slots. Tried nix live CD to eliminate OS, and problem persists...Have not tried ASUS for help because of a bad reputation as shown in adjacent reviews, but warranty expired 2 years ago, and I don't want to be down for an unknown period of time.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this board to run bare metal hypervisor w/ multiple os versions, but it wound up with win 7 ultimate and Vbox due to some hardware limitations of VSphere in 2010...
The oldest ASUS board I own died after 10 years....this one only lasted 5. I don't expect to invest in another new build that includes an ASUS board....seems their quality is diminishing over time.

This board has dropped $50 in price since I purchased the first one, but it still would cost about the same price to build out as in 2010....I don't want to invest $3000.00+ in a board that will die in 5 years :-(

5 out of 5 eggsFour Years of ownership!

Pros: Dual CPU with lots of cores. Solid ESXi 5.x performance. Less expensive than Intel solutions.

Cons: If I recall correctly for back in 3/2011 it doesn't use a "standard" mounting layout. Not a lot of G34 cooling options out there. The Dynatron A6 coolers I ended up using didn't set very flush but that's not the boards fault.

Other Thoughts: I have been running this board along with the other components listed below as an ESXi host four years now with absolutely no issues. I am back looking to purchase another one when I saw all the negative reviews and realized I had never posted one.
I see a lot of reviews mentioning Asus's poor support. I've used well over 100 of their motherboards and never had a situation where I have to contact them so I can't say much about that. I pretty much figure that after the 30 day Newegg return window closes, I'm on my own no matter who the OEM is.
The fact this board has been out so long it a testament to it's performance. There is a reason why servers are "raised" and computers are "built". If you don't have the skills to be a parent and raise it right, then you probably shouldn't order one of these.

2 x AMD Opteron 6128 Magny-Cours
2 x Dynatron A6
8 x Kingston 4GB ECC Registered DDR3 1333 KVR1333D3D4R9S/4G

5 out of 5 eggsBest motherboard I've ever had

Pros: An abundance of resources, 6 SATA ports, 2 G34 sockets, 16 RAM slots. Both of my builds have been rock solid, I can go weeks to months with no need to reboot.

Cons: Normal SATA ports are SATA II, you'll need the Pike card, or a seperate SATA controller to get SATA III.

Other Thoughts: This isn't a board for just everyone, but for someone who's running a number of virtual machines, or some heavy processing, it's an amazing board.

1 out of 5 eggsDecent Board - HORRIBLE Company!! Stay Away!!

Pros: Decent Motherboard if you want 32 cores

Cons: ASUS. This company SUCKS!!! After having the board for two years, it died. I proceed to RMA the board and sent it in for repair. Upon receiving my board, their techs abused my board. They bent pins on both sockets, broke off the metal flap that holds the CPU down, and busted up my serial number sticker. Then they tried charging me $180 to fix it.. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?

When I called to follow up, I waited on hold for 50 minutes and all their reps are Indian and could care less. None of them know anything about anything. They just refer you back to the online dispute form which sends an email to someone else who doesn't care with an IQ of 40. I should of, as well as everyone else who might buy ASUS, Google reviews on ASUS. They are scam artists and should be blacklisted from everyone's computers/servers. If you do end up buying from them and something breaks, make sure you take pictures of your device from ALL angles with proof that it's yours.

Congratulations ASUS! You've lost a customer for life!

5 out of 5 eggsVery reliable board

Pros: 1. Very reliable board.
2. Supports 256 GB RAM.
3. Two CPU slots.
4. Supports six hard disk drives in SATA
4. Very good documentation for the board shipped with the product, and on ASUS website.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: We purchased this board from NewEgg in 2013 for a server build, and I am considering buying another one for a different machine. I disagree with the recent negative reviews for this board. My experience with this motherboard has been awesome. We used this board in a compute server that was deployed in Aug 2013. The board has been in continuous use since with absolutely no issues whatsoever. The board was easy to mount in a Rosewill RSV-L4411 4U server chassis (N82E16811147165). The board supports 256 GB RAM and we filled all 256 with Wintec Server Series DDR3 1600 (N82E16820161579). Both Opteron 6272 CPUs (N82E16819113036) are cooled with Noctua NH-U9DO coolers (N82E16835608022). The 4U chassis was necessary because of the size of the Noctua coolers. PSU is a Corsair HX850 (N82E16817139011). There are six SATA HDD (N82E16822148910) in DAS implemented in Linux software RAID. All of these components were purchased from NewEgg in July 2013.

We have not had the occasion to use tech support because the board worked great out of the box. Takes about 30 seconds to POST, so be patient.

The board supports SAS with a PIKE card. We did not buy the PIKE and so far we haven't used the SAS.

We have not modified the board or tried to overclock the CPUs. We did not update the BIOS because the BIOS version that the board shipped with already supported our 16-core CPUs.

Overall this is a terrific board, and I would definitely buy it again !

1 out of 5 eggsLooks good on paper!

Pros: Dual G34 support
16 memory slots
Seems affordable

Cons: One CPU slot did not work out of the box
Took a long frustrating time to diagnose boot issues, which were really hardware issues
ASUS support totally useless. Waited on the phone for 2 hours with no reply. Serice site down. RMA not available online and on and on...

Other Thoughts: This is my 4th ASUS motherboard since 2002. I had positive outcome with the previous plain vanilaa boards. Don't know what to make of all the positive reviews posted here. However, it appears that the negative reviews are rising fast.

I have lost too much time trying to make things work. I should have gone with SuperMicro boards, specifically SUPERMICRO MBD-H8DG6 looks good and has great reviews.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings CR,

I am sorry to hear that you had issues with the motherboard and customer service. Have you contacted NewEgg for an RMA exchange already? If you would like to discuss this case further, or setup an RMA with ASUS, please contact me through email and include your reference number within the subject line. When you have the chance, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you have tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Cs#N141012076

1 out of 5 eggsWill not buy any Asus server motherboard again

Pros: - looks good
- dedicated management lan
- other equipment (PCIe and PCI slots)

Cons: - Random reboots , can not run it 24x7
- integrated GPU is a garbage (8MB of video ram). Ubuntu can not even switch to high-resolution
- 3rd LAN can not be used for networking
- requires a separate card for iKVM
- most onboard SAS/SATA connectors does not work out from the box. Requires a separate card for proprietary PIKE slot. Since card uses proprietary slot, it will become useless after motherboard replacement
- USB 2.0
- onboard SATA 3GB/s
- very long POST

Other Thoughts: Reboots randomly every ~20 hours even without load. Under short stress tests (memtest and CPU benchmarks) does not seem to reboot. Looks like some ACPI/bios-related issue.

My config: Ubuntu Server 14.04, 2x6128 Opteron, 8x8GB Supermicro F617R2-RT, 500W PSU

I would better go for Supermicro or Tyan motherboard.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsGood board

Pros: Great board build carefully.

I have 3 of these boards, one older rev board running (2) 6200 16 cores each with 64Gb ECC - running at 1333

All (3) systems I build are in Antec Titan server case, not the best case, but the board fits nicely and have room for 8 internal drives.

The newer KGPE-D16's (all have 3201 bios) are running:
(2) Opteron 6386SE @ 2.8Ghz - Best G34 chip.

Running with 128Gb Ram - runs at 1600 - Kingston 16Gb Chips - fills all orange slots. (looked up on

Using the good - Noctua G34 Cpu Coolers

Power supply: Don't cheap out on this! many that did reviews got low-end junk ones and modified them. Get a Seaonic 850 Platinum which has the (3) total DC connectors for Mainboard.

Raid: wow - someone here was using the garbage promise software raid. lol - don't do this. I got an LSI 92XX series HARDARE RAID cards - one is an 4i/4e - and have it hooked up to a external drive cage - SAS2 drives, BBU, Cachcade option - SSD infront of RAID (yes hot spares) This is better than the Pike offerings - spend another $500+ for good RAID.

Runs tons of stuff easily.

Cons: No drivers for Vmware - just what it can detect.

No temps or Fan sensors! Please post here if you have this board running ESXi 5.5 u2 and can see them.

I have 158 sensors - plus I can see raid health in VMware, so that is ok - but not perfect.

Other Thoughts: Got a virtual render box that I gave 20 cores to run Autocad renders. Crushes everything...
