5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: this mobo rocks, it has beaucoup connectors and great features. it is a matx so it allows for someone to build a smaller system that still can pack a punch.

Cons: the northbride is scalding hot. can not figure out why. without a fan directly over it it will shut the pc down.

Other Thoughts: this is a great mobo that allows of the builder to think outside the box. but the northbridge is super hot. you could fry an egg on it

5 out of 5 eggsSuprised at negative reviews

Pros: Configurable, stable, high quality, and decent overclocking tools.

Board seemed very high quality when I bought it and it still seems very high quality after three years.

Cons: Can't think of any. But out of sheer preference, it would be nice to add more voltage to the onboard fan controllers.

Other Thoughts: For people who are having issues with this board, it just appears to need more voltage. Out of the box, my board rebooted and was unstable--just like the reviews I read previously. However, in the BIOS, just select the "Gaming" Tuning Mode and this seems to adjust the necessary voltages automatically. For me, it's been running stable for 3+ years after this slight adjustment.

Also, if the memory isn't on the recommended/tested list from the manufacturer--then don't install it! Buy what's been tested and recommended!

And I have no affiliation with ASUS.

1 out of 5 eggsDead All of them

Pros: Excellent when it worked for like 1 month from original purchase.

Cons: From day one all revisions of this motherboard has given me problems, nothing but PROBLEMS, they all broke down, first one sent back for a Advanced RMA, returned and Returned with a brand newboard, one problem with it, it has a CRP bug ( Asus CPU Parameter Recall) So i sent it Back ( and its considered a Second rma even though diffrent S/N) It returns to me and has still has the same problem, i Work with someone and they attempt another Advanced RMA on this 'special' case, i lost connection on the phone with the ONE Nice person that was trying to help me out,. i get on the phone with another and he leads me thru a whole thing but i managed to get the board Sent back, and well it returns to me, and Same problem.. nothing is done to it, i got no report back on what was fixed if anything was done to it, and nothing so in total RMA'd 4 times, i talk to another CSR and they said they can attempt to Rebuild the system with my exact specs so i sent them an email back.

Other Thoughts: Other notes to this, i thought it was my CPU at first, So i purchased a Brand new 1366 i7 920 and Borrowed my friends i990x Directly out of his machine. Well i lost out on a good chunk of money as a new i7 920 1366 ARE still expensive as heck even for a older tech. BOTH of those proccessors on the motherboard still give it the CPR but are recognized as that. But i cannot Save anything in bios or do any overclocking, i cannot use my XMP for my Ram so their running under spec etc. There's a way to trick the system but its NOT how it supposed to work, when ever i reboot i have to press f1 and then Esc to leave the bios and it lets me boot but Everything is Default even if i have profiles set to run better, any Overclocking tools that Asus provides does not work on it at all, it will not hold the parameters at all for the CPU or Ram, other things will hold like if its sata/raid/ide, but nothing to do with cpu and memory can be adjusted.

if Asus is Reading this well as Asus Technical Support Randall C. would be great to put these eggs back up to 5. Else i have to figure out some other way to get a working machine, bright side is i have 1 Extra brand spanking new 920 to perhaps rebuild a machine with a diffrent motherboard.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear about the issue you had with the motherboard. ASUS CPR is automatically activiated when BIOS settings are set outside of the hardware's intended operating range. Please try to flash the BIOS to the latest BIOS version, load defaults, save and exit. Also, try to create new profiles after BIOS update instead of previous saved profiles. To continue support, please email me below with your RMA # so that we can look into your case in more detail. Thank you.

1 out of 5 eggsBSOD

Pros: It has all the newer bells and whistles. I thought the motherboard would be a good temporary upgrade to keep my system going. .

Cons: I get random crashes all day. For the price and size of the board I would not recomend it. The disk has tons of tools that can only be used in a 32bit system why would you run 32 bit with this socket set???

Other Thoughts: I wish I would have returned it after day one. Also if you ever have to replace a board do not down grade yourself. Replaced a bricked EVGA x58 classified with the above board.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear about the crashing issue you have with Rampage III Gene. Please try to loading BIOS defaults (no overclocking), perform a clean install of the OS, update drivers, and run a DMP (dump file) analyzer if you still experience to help you pinpoint the cause.

Drivers for Windows 7 64-bit, Vista 64-bit, and XP 64-bit are available for this motherboard at: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1366/Rampage_III_GENE/#download.

If you need additinal support, please feel free to contact me at cl-benson@asus.com, reference #C1037-6084 in the subject line.

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible Compatibility

Pros: Typical X58 board with added features, fits in mATX case thats it.

Cons: - Marvell 6.0 controller is glitched causes bsods and doesn't transfer much faster than stock intel sata 2.0 controllers. Drivers cause BSODs, ASUS doesn't update drivers or bios for their added gear, you have to go to a french 3rd party website to get drivers and firmware.

- Memory compatibility is very strange, the memory in the compability list in the manual doesn't work well. Auto RAM settings are horrible and unstable. I have tried two sets of ram meeting compability list to have to configure each set manually to get a somewhat stable system.

- stock bios is unstable, had to update to latest to make my system semi-stable.

- Overall Very Horrible motherboard, very disappointed, do not buy this board, buy something else besides ASUS. This was my first purchase from ASUS and NEWEGG and not worth it. I will not buy ASUS again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear that you have issue with the motherboard.

We do not recommend obtaining drivers/BIOS/firmware from non-official websites as they can cause unknown effects on your stystem. The drivers/BIOS/software posted on our website should not cause any issues such as BSOD. If have the BSOD error description and would like to send it in for analysis, please contact me at cl-benson@asus.com. Reference #C1037-5618 in the subject line.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst board I've ever purchased

Pros: 2x PCI-E 2.0 x16

Cons: Terrible Board Layout
SATA / RAID controller fails intermittently
Occasionally on boot, while detecting drives, it will take about 60 seconds to recognize each drive.
Only recognizes 8GB of the 24GB I have installed (RAM works in other machines)

Other Thoughts: I've owned a number of other ASUS parts with varying degrees of quality, but I think this may be my last ASUS product.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear about the issues you had with the motherboard.

Regarding SATA ports, please try another cable, swap the drives to other ports, and test the health of the drive. In some cases, it could be the PSU not providing power to the drives.

If you've already tested said 8GB memory in other slots and they are not recognized, the slots themselves may be defective. In that case, we recommend RMA'ing the motherboard so our technicians can further test the board. If it is not repairable, we will provide a replacement. To RMA the motherboard, please use the following form at http://vip.asus.com/eservice/usa_rmaserv.aspx or call 1-812-282-2787.

1 out of 5 eggsnot good

Pros: good board layout

Cons: the board didn't recognize my drives all of the time. i tryed a PCI-e OCZ card and it would recognize it about 10% of the time. i then tryed to setup 2 OCZ SSD on the Sata 3 ports and setup a raid windows 7 installation recogniazed the raid without the driver. but with and without loading the driver refused to install windows on the dives. this may just have been a defective board on the ports i was trying to use. i was able to get a singel drive to work and install windows on a Sata 2 port. and after updating the bois i still had the same problem with all of the drives.

Other Thoughts: i have RMA the board for refund as it does not work as intended

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear about the issue you had with the motherboard.

To set up RAID, please be sure to enable it in BIOS. At POST, press CTRL + I to enter Intel Option ROM and create a RAID volume. Save, reboot, and install Windows as normal. Please ready a flash drive or CD containing Intel Rapid Storage Technology as you may be prompt for drivers during installation. If not, install them once you are in Windows. Drivers can be found at: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1366/Rampage_III_GENE/#download.

If you believe that the SATA ports are non-functional, please either obtain a replacement from the retailer or RMA the motherboard to our service center. To RMA the motherboard, please use the following form at: http://vip.asus.com/eservice/usa_rmaserv.aspx or call 1-812-282-2787.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board when it worked

Pros: awesome, fast stable highly overclockable(when it worked)

Cons: broke down in not more then several months, it start hard rebooting by itself

Other Thoughts: i HAD it RMA'd and it returned to me THE SAME motheboard! it said (New) Repaired on it so i figure they just gave me a replacement but no it was the same board due to the slight dust collection near the Ram where i had a high velocity fan blowing over my ram, The Motherboard Now does not even post at all, does absolutely nothing.... I did not get any Technician notes like the CSR over the phone said i would, and i had to pay for the shipping going there and comming out of hawaii thats not cheap, Im going to call them and see what the heck is going on and why they thought it was a fun thing to send a dead motherboard back when the paper that was stickered on to the static wraping said New...... Bad business right there
