5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Motherboard

Pros: The Crosshair IV Extreme is an awesome mobo that I've been using as my gaming / do everything rig for just over three years now.
All components on the mobo still function as expected.
The boards feature set, from the on-board LED's to the rear mounted BIOS reset button have all proven to be great extra functions when the situation called for their use.

If this board does ever completely fail during my use of it, I will miss it.

Cons: The Lucid Hydra CrossLinx 3 chip that was meant for multi-GPU acceleration going the way of vapor-ware has become a useless part on the board.
Thankfully the GPU's I have used on this board function just fine without using the CrossLinx 3 chip at all.

Other Thoughts: Three years later and I am still very happy with my choice in this motherboard.
There are plenty of new options for system builds today, but with 6 cores at 4.0GHz and 16GB of RAM I personally don't have an urge to upgrade.

3 out of 5 eggsInternet?

Pros: Works good everything I really expected.

Cons: I think something is wrong with the internet port. Might be a driver? Don't know but every time I have to many browsers open it blue screens, every time i'm playing a game online.. and so forth. When I do anything offline everything works well.

Other Thoughts: I would love some help on this issue.

1 out of 5 eggsTotal Junk

Pros: NONE.

Cons: Same as anyone else with 1 or 2 stars tells you, this board is total junk.

1. All USB ports stop seeing devices, no BIOS settings or updates. Have to unplug each component one at a time and plug in again in order to recognize the component.

2. USB 3.0 sometimes works sometimes doesn't.

3. PCI-E lanes stop/start working when they feel like it.

4. Northbridge and Southbridge get way too hot, forced to keep my case open even with 6 case fans... I can fry an egg on it.

5. Intel gigabit ethernet conflicts with AMD/ATI drivers.

6. BIOS resets on its own, have to reconfigure once a week at least.

7. When the BIOS resets you have to take out all memory sticks but one. Only then can you get the BIOS to boot. Then have to power down, push the other sticks back in, power on and pray.

Other Thoughts: I bought the board late 2011 but didn't get to install it until late 2012 after returning from Afghanistan. I wish I would have tested it before I left to see all the issues, I would have returned it. Since I was stuck it acted up since day 1, start the computer mouse doesn't work, get up, pull out/push back in the cable, still doesn't work, plug it in somewhere else, finally works. Now the keyboard doesn't work, pull it out, push it in. Still doesn't work, put it next to the mouse, now the mouse doesn't work, move them both elsewhere. Finally both work.

Too much fancy stuff gives the entire board issues. ASUS promised updates to the issues listed above but got tired of waiting for a BIOS update.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry for the experience you had with the motherboard. The issues you provided may be due to overclocking at settings exceeding the limits the board. Can you try loading defaults (F5, , save and exit) in UEFI, and return to non-overclock state? If the issues persists, try updating the BIOS to the latest version. We would be happy to receive your motherboard and look into the issues you mentioned. Please contact me directly at cl-benson@asus.com (reference #C1037-8341 in the subject line) with hardware used, BIOS version, and OS version at your earliest convenience. Thank you.

1 out of 5 eggsA Disappointment

Pros: Good for overclocking.
The built in RAID controller works really well with AMD raid software, Win7.

Lots of good features but the cons out weigh the pros.

Cons: I have owned this board for a year and a half, it was used for my gaming PC, AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition, two AMD 5870's GPUs in Crossfire X, 1000 watt power supply.

1. Two PCIe x16 slots no-longer work, the capacitors for them burned out.

Since the board is now useless I will tell you what I didn't like when it was working

2. Inefficient and annoying fan cooling of the south-north-bridge.

3. The PCB is not thick enough.

4. The PCI clips are hard to unlock/access when using large cards.

5. The user manual is misprinted, for example sata connectors 123456 in the manual differ from whats printed on the board the board is right manual wrong , and a power source is listed wrong, some random pictures as well.

6. The ASUS support download website lacks descriptive file download information form update to update, version to version, you have no idea what's new, what's changed, what has been patched, BIOS, software, all of it really.

I'm not sure if I should return this Motherboard under warranty to ASUS, or If I should jest replace the PCIe slot capacitors myself with higher quality capacitors, I'm afraid of what I' will get in return I don't want it fixed, and I think it's no-longer manufactured.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

4 out of 5 eggsOut of Box Issues

Pros: Read the specs, you will see them all right there.

Cons: One huge glaring out of box issue, it is prone to a network driver BSOD crash. After a year of checking for something a bit more substantial than beta drivers, i looked for a few hours to find an Intel update to the drivers which has fixed all my system issues.

Other Thoughts: I dont rate 5/5 as perfect, to mean it means it exceeded my expectations and did not have any issues. The drivers you get on the disk are as up to date as the ones on the website for the on board NIC. If ASUS had released an updated driver within a couple months of my purchase, would have been 5/5

1 out of 5 eggsproblems

Pros: lots of bells and whistles

Cons: very unstable board, thats why it does not sell anymore here

Other Thoughts: this board is weak, for the money this thing should fly, rather it crashes and burns.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful board

Pros: This is the Second Crosshair IV extreme I have owned (the first was destroyed along with my house in an EF5 tornado definately not Asus's fault. Too bad to all the nay sayers)
5 PCI-E slots, one of the few boards that will support 3 way CrossFire at 16/16/16. Lucid Logic Chip Seems like it could be useful under the right circumstances. However, I run all ATI Cards so I don't use it myself. Taps for measuring Voltage directly, with a volt Meter. The ability to disable individual PCI-E slots for diag reasons. (again haven't had to use it myself but I can see how it would be quite useful if your GPU(s) are Water cooled as mine are. Nice over all layout and tons of features

Cons: Well the BSOD from a buggy lan driver. This however is easily fixable with and updated version from Intel (or Asus it seems tho I got mine from Intel)

Other Thoughts: My Rig
AMD 1090T Black Edition
4 XFX 6970 2gb in 4 GPU Crossfire enabled
2 x Plextor 64 Gig SATA III SSD Drives in a striped array
2 x Western Digital 500 gig Sata III
1 x LG CD/DVD Burner Sata
1 x Coolermaster 1200w Continuous Power Supply
2 x Geil 4 GB Memory in 2x2 Setup in Dual channel mode.
Dual Loop Water Cooling 1/2 ID system, with one loop for the Video cards and one loop for the both and south bridge, lucidlogix chip as well as the CPU cool. Keeping all of them, below 35 deg C idle. Never above 50 deg C.

4 out of 5 eggsIt wins.

Pros: This motherboard is just pretty to look at. But what impresses me is the overclocking features. This was MADE for overclockers, literally. I mean it!

Cons: I've been having an issue with my network controller. I don't know if it's a driver issue, or a hardware problem. I went and bought an aftermarket network controller and I've yet to have another BSOD like I was before. But whatever.

Other Thoughts: More of a user error. The blue-tooth chip they package comes SEPARATELY. Make sure, if you want bluetooth, to install it before you do ANYTHING with this board. I hadn't noticed it was separate and I had to take the other motherboard out just to put the chip in. Again, more of my problem.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Lot's of features. Lot's of expandability. Smells good when it burns.

Cons: The heat dissipation for this board is pathetic! The materials used for this vital function are of such low quality they belong on a 50 dollar motherboard, not a 300 dollar one. The issue with the LAN is completely unacceptable and this board was undoubtedly released while known to be faulty. Total garbage quality

Other Thoughts: So far I've had two of these. The first one blew up and was replaced with a refurb that lasted a WHOLE 2 WEEKS! PCI-E slots are DEAD. One morning woke up and the little red LED for VGA on the mobo was on. Had an electronics expert check it and everything. This thing is dead. Like dead dead. I can't wait to see how my second RMA experience goes. First time, some Rafel guy called me dumb and illogical. And for a whole month they were looking for a Crosshair formula. All I have to say. For those of you who got this board and it works perfect for you.. YOU ARE LUCKY. I honestly cannot believe that I plugged 2700 dollars worth of stuff into this board. I am completely without a computer again and I'm sure since they don't manufacture these anymore I will receive another garbage refurb from ASUS. Thanks. Can't wait to never buy your MOBO's again. /endrant
