5 out of 5 eggsGreat for a low powered server

Pros: Quiet and quick enough for a low powered NAS server.

Cons: Wish it had a few more SATA ports, but five is pretty convenient already.

4 out of 5 eggsperfect HTPC board

Pros: Bought it primarily to build a HTPC. It serves that function flawlessly. With an SSD and its large heatsink, it is nearly without moving parts. The only fan is in the power supply, which is unavoidable. As a result, it runs perfectly silent.

Cons: I would have expected it to run some lower-end games a bit better with its 6310 gpu, but it was crippled by even fairly undemanding games.

Other Thoughts: Overall a great board, just don't expect it to fill a role it wasn't meant for. Microatx makes for a nice portable form factor and it can be tucked easily away into a theater shelf, given the right case.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor pcie support

Pros: low power, expansion slots

Cons: Does not initialize some cards in the pcie slot. See asus forums.

Other Thoughts: Wont initialize hp p400 raid card or many others. Support does not show any signs of caring. Bios updated to 1602 still no fix. This could be a fine nas server if raid cards worked.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat MB

Pros: Easy to install - just added 8GB of approved Kingston RAM, DVD and HD.
Just as fast as my old D820 Dell but runs much cooler.
I use it as my home PC and it is my DVR using Beyond TV. Works great for this and even while recording or converting files to DIVX computer doesn't slow down.

Cons: None

3 out of 5 eggsUpdate to my BIOS review

Pros: Same as previous review
Pluggable BIOS chip is a plus

Cons: ASUS tech support / eStore doesn't offer this BIOS for purchase
Tech support (general tech support) resorts to RMA for this issue

Other Thoughts: I bought a replacement BIOS chip through a "large used online retailer" and it fixed my issue of the bad flash. But I had to order it from the Netherlands.
I also ordered one from San Jose, CA (who custom-flashed one) but it was delayed due to a seller family situation.

This fixed the motherboard issue I had.
Definitely didn't need 2 BIOS replacements, but this way I can flash a new BIOS and have a for-sure backup!

Also, I used this Motherboard to replace my aging HP DEC z5xx (mine was a z552) motherboard. That's an HP Digital Entertainment Center.

The Front Panel LCD / LED software WILL WORK (I'm using Windows 7 x64 SP1 now) if you install ALL the ASUS diagnostics software (and BIOS 1601). It enables the BIOS calls and the Firewire driver required by the Front Panel tservice.exe process.

There's a long thread over at AVSForum.com that talks about how to keep this form DEC factor running, and this motherboard will do it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

The E35M1-M Pro does have our CrashFree BIOS 3 feature to helps you recover the BIOS in the event that it becomes corrupt or unusable. Simply insert a flash drive or DVD disk that contains the latest BIOS file renamed "E35M1MP.ROM" and CrashFree BIOS 3 will initiate automatically. Do not power off the computer at any point while this is in progress.

At the moment, we do not stock BIOS chip at our eStore for this motherboard. If there's a problem with the BIOS, we suggest RMA the motherboard to our service center.

Regards,
Benson

3 out of 5 eggsGood, but beware of BIOS updates

Pros: Easy installation, All-in-one, Quiet, Low power, etc.
It's good for a home-theater PC type thing like I was using it for because even when the fan is on, it's still quieter than the spinning disks.

Finding the right drivers for it will significantly help improve video performance. But the Catalyst software is really bad.

Cons: The latest BIOS update (1601) completely BRICKED the motherboard. It won't POST, beep, no video, nothin'. Nuthin' burgers. I used the EZ Flash 2 utility in the BIOS like I have before. It completed properly, said it was going to Reset the PC, and everything went black.

ASUS does have a recovery mode for a Bad BIOS Flash, but it assumes that the motherboard will boot far enough to be able to read some sort of media.

I put a copy of the BIOS ROM file on a DVD, USB, and the root folder of my drives (properly named) and it couldn't get started.

So, I guess I need to RMA the entire board. The BIOS is removable. So I could order a new chip somewhere for $20.

Other Thoughts: I see that the BIOS date was created in May 2012 and was posted in September 2012. I thought it would fix an issue with some USB keyboard things I thought I had. I guess I won't know.

Shipping the entire motherboard back for this issue seems crazy, but maybe something else is wrong...

I've not had this issue before with ASUS motherboards, but once I recover this one, I think I won't be touching the BIOS again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize that for the issue you had with BIOS update on this motherboard.

Please try clearing CMOS. Turn off the computer. Turn the switch on the back of the power supply to OFF, or unplug from the outlet. Wait 10 seconds until the standby LED goes out. On the lower right corner of the motherboard is a jumper marked "CLRTC", move the jumper from positions 1 and 2 to 2 and 3. then positions 1 and 2. Power on the computer. Any changes?

If the motherboard still does not POST, please RMA the motherboard by filling out the online submittal form at http://vip.asus.com/eservice/usa_rmaserv.aspx or call 1-812-282-2787.

2 out of 5 eggsFaulty Sound

Pros: Seemed to be a great little board. Doesn't seem fair to knock off three eggs for something I sent back and never got a chance to test further, but then again, a faulty board is a faulty board.

Cons: Unfortunately, mine arrived defective. No output from any of the audio ports despite everything reporting well in the OS. Asus tried to help me over the Labor day weekend (very good customer service response time) but in the end nothing worked to solve the problem and I had to send the board back.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunate it is now out-of-stock and Newegg's policy is to refund us if that happens, so I'll have to try another board.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issue you had with the motherboard.

Please let me know if you still encounter issue with the sound or otherwise with the replacement motherboard by emailing me at cl-benson@asus.com reference #C1037-4120.

1 out of 5 eggsAMD ATI Catalyst Driver is a Kludge

Pros: nice motherboard

Cons: Terrible video driver. Whatever you do, don't go to AMD's web site and try to upgrade. I have always had difficulty with the Catalyst driver as far back as 2008, and 2012 is no different. After "upgrading" to the latest version of Catalyst, the program reported everything was OK. Then it disappeared completely from both the desktop and the Startup menu. There is no way to access any Catalyst controls anywhere in Windows, not even in the Control Panel. In addition, my PC has slowed down to a fraction of its former speed. Now I have spent 3 hours that I don't have trying to install, uninstall, install again, reboot again, and on and on, because ATI failed to debug their own software.

Other Thoughts: I am actually very pleased this happened on the first APU I purchased, because it will be the last APU I purchase. I was seriously considering buying another E-350 before this ATI Catalyst fiasco. Now I know better!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issue you had with the motherboard.

Please try performing a clean install of Windows and install the AMD VGA and Chipset drivers from our website at http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_CPU_on_Board/E35M1M_PRO/#download as they have tested to work properly with the motherboard.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent board on a budget.

Pros: Decent price and saves you time having to mess with heatsinks and grease, and overall not a bad board for what it costs. Able to overclock slightly through BIOS.

Cons: Not able to upgrade CPU (uses an APU) and has trouble keeping up with intense graphics (slow APU), cannot overclock much (.2 GHz over factory).

Other Thoughts: For a budget build such as mine, it works really great and all my geek friends say I've got a great rig for the price.... However if you could afford a better board that doesn't use an APU, I would suggest going that route for the sake of more power and upgrades in the future.
