4 out of 5 eggsGreat priced board

Pros: I initially bought this board becuase I was taking a UNIX clas and decided to build a LINUX server to help. I loaded up ubunto server with no problem. This board was easy to configure. The drivers were automatically installed. I now run the board for a WHS 2011 server, with a SATA expansion card. No problems.

Cons: The boot out of bios is slow. I had to upgrade the BIOS out of the box. It was all messed up with a thumb drive inserted as bootable disk. Just a minor flaw.

Other Thoughts: My build
I3 2100
4GB Corsair XMS RAM
Startech SATA expander
2 ESATA drives
5 Internal Disks all WD Black
15Tbytes total

1 out of 5 eggsworthless if you are running Linux

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Will not boot correctly in to Linux. I have tried several different versions, and at one point I did get it to boot after messing with it for a couple of days, but it is dead again. Their support will only say that they do not support Linux and ask me if it works with windows.

Other Thoughts: I have had nothing but problems with Asus products in the past, and now after messing with this for almost a week trying to get it to boot I have decided that I will stick with a brand that always works like gigabyte.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

While there is no official support for Linux, the motherboard should allow installation of non-Windows OSes. We suggest checking with the distribution maintainers if you encounter error when installing or loading Linux. We apologize for the inconvenience. Does the motherboard post normally without an OS installed? If you have any questions, concerns, or to continue support, please contact me at cl-benson@asus.com or our motherboard support hotline at 1-812-282-2787. Thank you.

Regards,
Benson

1 out of 5 eggsGot What I Paid For

Pros: Inexpensive, compact

Cons: This motherboard was defective right out of the box. There was a problem with the onboard video chipset at the very least. This caused the screen to behave like there was no vertical hold. Wonderful. Add random restarts and power downs, and you have something that shames you when you build a computer for someone else. Called support, of course, they didn't have any new ones in stock, so I had to send it in for repair. They 'repaired' it, but did not tell me what they repaired on it, it just appeared in the mail one day as 'repaired'. After only 2 days after reinstallation, the problem returned. Less than 7 months of ownership, and I'm tossing this brick in the scrap heap. I'd heard horror stories about ASUS tech support, but I had no idea. I have added ASUS to my do-not-buy list.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear about the issues. Please contact us at Newegg_ASUS_MBSupport@asus.com stating all parts used together with any RMA case numbers and we will look into this for you.

3 out of 5 eggsBatting 500

Pros: Everything that you need for a basic PC + a 6GB/s controller to get the most out of an SSD. Built out with an i3 CPU, 4GB, & SSD it will boot Kubuntu in well under 10 sec.

Cons: Bought two and one was DOA. I purchased two identical sets of hardware at the same time so I was able to confirm that all of the parts were compatible (first set worked fine) and cross check all of the parts to arrive at the MB as the source of the problem.

5 out of 5 eggsLove the EFI Bios

Pros: Asus quality, love the EFI bios, attractive boot screen

Cons: feels flimsy compared to the AMD boards I usually get, but that's not a real issue since it's not going to get moved between different cases. I'd like for it to have an IDE connector so I could have used my old dvd burner, but I guess it was time to upgrade anyways

Other Thoughts: Asus has never done me wrong, this board has really made me happy

1 out of 5 eggsFried Board

Pros: Cheap price. It worked once.

Cons: The board worked fine the first time computer was booted up. A day later it didn't power on at all and I could smell something that had burnt in the case. It just happened to be the motherboard. Decided to RMA it and get a different board instead. The good part is it didn't short anything else.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear about the issues. We hope the replacement board works fine for you.

5 out of 5 eggsBe aware!

Pros: Good board.

Cons: Default BIOS settings are bad if you are not using a PCIE video card. See below

Other Thoughts: On the board I got the default BIOS settings were for an external (as opposed to on-chip) video card. When you try to boot the board in this configuration it will act like the memory is bad. The LED on the motherboard will also indicate bad memory. This is NOT the case. You just need to install a PCIE video card and it will boot fine. Then change the settings in the BIOS to use the on-chip video, save the settings and when the system reboots turn it off. Then pull out the PCIE video card and reboot. I spent hours and bought memory I didn't need to figuring this out.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy if you want RAID

Pros: Probably a decent board if you don't need RAID. EFI BIOS is nice.

Cons: RAID doesn't work. On every cold boot, it loses the first drive in the array and triggers a rebuild. ASUS shipped me a beta BIOS to try and fix the problem. It didn't. I spent return shipping to RMA the board for a brand new one. Same problem.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Built 4 PCs, so far so good, came with latest BIOS, used SATA 6 HDDs - no issues. Using front case USB, there's a total of 8 USB ports. Still has one PS/2 port for older keyboards if needed. Adjustable rear fan speed control in BIOS. SATA cables color coded for easy installation.

Cons: Not a biggy: You MUST adjust BIOS to: turn on AHCI (its OFF by default), turn OFF legacy Serial & LPT1 ports (although there are no connecters onboard)

No HDMI on this model

Other Thoughts: With GUI BIOS, you'll want to go into advanced mode for some settings above. I never give anything a "5 star" until its been proven in the field for at least one year.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice Motherboard

Pros: Fast & reliable. The USB ports and onboard stuff like the video card, and SATA ports are plentiful. Wish they had made the USB 3.x ports front mounted instead of "onboard" though.

Cons: USB 3.x ports are back mounted. And it would of been nice if they included an option to order the mobo the front mount USB/Audio ports. But no big deal.

Other Thoughts: I am using this motherboard as a server with an Intel i3 duo core cpu. Performs marvelously. Running it with extra SATA ports for a total of 8 SATA hard drives and an SSD drive. Getting the correct 3 foot SATA cables was a bit of a challenge though
