The Most Cost Effective UP Appliance Server Solution

P8B-C/4L is the latest ASUS UP serverboard designed as a Bromolow platform with up-to-date Intel architecture, quad Intel server class GbE, and high PCI expandability. P8B-C/4L is ideal for legacy PCI appliances (Ex: surveillance, video capturing, etc.), networking, and other entry applications.

ASUS Motherboard

Up-to-Date LGA 1155 Socket Platform for Outstanding Performance

P8B-C series supports wide-range CPUs to cover different levels of market segment including Intel® Xeon® E3-1200 processor family, Intel® Core™ i3-2100 Processor Family, and Intel® Core™ G8x0/G6x0 Processor Family. The new platform architecture uses the LGA 1155 package with memory and integrated PCI Express controllers to support dual-channel DDR3 ECC memory and 20 PCI Express 2.0 lanes. The support of ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory improves data integrity to offer higher reliability. Provision of more PCI Express 2.0 lanes benefits various server applications. Most important, the motherboard provides significant performance improvement of around 25% over previous generations.

To meet the trend of large capacity hard disk drives, P8B-C series equips UEFI BIOS. The UEFI BIOS supports the latest GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition formats and is backward compatible with legacy MBR (Master Boot Record) partition formats, so you can easily manage very large capacity hard disk drives or partitions - for example, a single hard disk or single partition larger than 2.2TB.

ASUS Motherboard

Designed to Support Legacy PCI Device Applications

With new technology rolling in to PCI express technology, many applications still require PCI applications. Because of that, the P8B-C/4L provides up to five PCI expansion slots to meet various customer requirements. Customers can move their existing legacy PCI add-on cards to P8B-C/4L, as well as benefit from up-to-date Intel Core i CPUs and DDR3 memory technology without new PCI express cards investment.

Quad Intel Server Class GbE, IPv6 Support Ready

Loaded with an Intel server-class GbE controller, the P8B-C/4L is the best candidate for an Ethernet appliance application. To handle an explosion of internet traffic, the P8B-C/4L is equipped with Intel® GbE LAN controllers with IPv6 support and is backward compatible with IPv4 protocol. With IPv6 support, customers can implement new systems and seamlessly work with existing Ethernet environments. The teaming function not only doubles the bandwidth compared to most dual LAN servers but supports Fault Tolerance technology. Also, the Load Balance handles network traffic delicately - which is great for enhancing network functionality.

Wide Range OS Support

The P8B-C series supports wide-range mainstream server and client OS, including Windows 2008 R2, Windows 7, Cent OS, redhat, SuSE Linux, and more, to meet the demands of today's customers.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Board

Pros: 4 Gigabit LAN ports. Bought this board for an Endian Firewall. Still waiting on a CPU to see how the board works (see Cons)

Cons: Doe not support core i5 CPUs. Not the boards fault that I didn't read. I am normally an AMD user, so I assumed same socket, no problem, but that is apparently not the case. Thought I'd post this here so somebody else doesn't make the same mistake.

Other Thoughts: At the time I was searching for this board I didn't find anything equivalent for an AMD CPU or I'd have bought that instead.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Supports the new low power Xeon devices and unbuffered ECC RAM.

Cons: Board arrived with a DOA integrated graphics chip! As this was used to upgrade a mission-critical server, I had no choice but to literally remove (desolder) the blistering hot XGI Volari chip and add an external graphics adapter in order to get the server back in service before the maintenance window ended. A normal user would have had to wait 2+ weeks to receive a replacement for this effectively DOA board.

Other Thoughts: Quality issues aside, the board works reasonably well with Linux as long as the latest BIOS is installed--the BIOS shipping with this board causes the network devices to fail on many Linux kernels.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear about the issue with XGI onboard video on this motherboard and we're glad that it's working well. However, we do not recommend performing modification to the motherboard as doing so may affect its warranty. More information about warranty is available at:!Server%20Warranty/c1csq.

4 out of 5 eggsGood mobo, but way too touchy regarding 8GB RAM!!!

Pros: Technically 32GB RAM Capable board with good processor options.
PCI and PCI-E slots to cover most needs.
Good network support with 4x 1GB Copper Ethernet

Is running ESX 5 with some additional NICs and works fine. NICs were detected without issue, no apparent driver problems

Cons: Doesn't accept most 8GB RAM DIMMs, for some reason only tested with a very limited set and doesn't offer a lot of options for current inexpensive memory, even Kingston. Takes a 2x 4GB kit of the series but croaks when provided 2x 8GB (individual) from most similar types. I've tried three (3) different 8GB DIMMs so far, no dice.

Other Thoughts: ASUS needs to provide a greater range of tested 8GB DIMMS, at more reasonable costs. The days where we are willing to shell out $200 for 8GB DIMM are over.
