Cutting-Edge Bromolow Flagship Model

The P8B-E/4L is the latest ASUS UP serverboard designed as Bromolow platform's flagship model, featuring an Intel® C204 PCH chipset, leading SATA 6G storage technology, quad Intel server class GbE, ASMB5-iKVM module (optional) for out-of-band remote management, and wide-range OS support, making it an ideal foundation for versatile and feature-rich UP solutions.

Features

ASUS Motherboard

Up-to-Date LGA 1155 Socket Platform for Outstanding Performance

The P8B-E/4L supports a wide-range of CPUs to cover different levels of the market segment including the Intel® Xeon® E3-1200 processor family, the Intel® CoreTM i3-2100 Processor Family, and the Intel® Core™ G8x0/G6x0 Processor Family. The new platform architecture uses a LGA 1155 package with memory and PCI Express controllers integrated to support dual-channel DDR3 ECC memory and 20 PCI Express 2.0 lanes. The support of ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory improves data integrity to offer higher reliability. Provision of more PCI Express 2.0 lanes benefits various server applications. Most importantly, the motherboard provides significant performance improvement around 25% over the previous generation.

Native SATA 6Gbps Support

The P8B-E/4L is built with the Intel® C204 chipset which natively supports the latest Serial ATA (SATA) 6G interface. It provides up to 6Gbps bandwidth, which doubles the previous SATA 3Gbps interface. With better protocol and electrical characteristics, users will find better I/O performance and be ready for upcoming SSD applications.

ASUS PIKE SAS2 6Gbps Storage Supported

ASUS' optional PIKE provides slim-sized and flexible storage options. SAS RAID upgrades can be achieved directly via a unique slot—without sacrificing expansion capability. Also, the  P8B-E/4L supports the latest SAS2 6Gbps storage through the PIKE interface, doubling transmission speeds of SAS' 3Gbps. The ASUS PIKE 2008 supports RAID 0, 1, 10 and 1E; PIKE 2008/IMR supports RAID 0, 1, 10, 5 and 50; PIKE 2108 is a hardware RAID solution, which can support high performance RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 6, 50 and 60.

ASUS Motherboard

Quad Intel Server Class GbE, IPv6 Support Ready

With the rapid explosion of internet traffic, the P8B-E/4L is equipped with Intel® GbE LAN controllers feautring IPv6 support and backward compatibility with IPv4 protocol. With IPv6 ready support, customers can deploy new systems seamlessly working with existing Ethernet environments. With teaming functions, they not only double the bandwidth compared to most dual LAN servers, but it supports Fault Tolerance technology. Also, the Load Balance handles network traffic delicately which is good at enhancing network functionality.

Built in BMC engine, IPMI 2.0 + KVM-over-IP Enabled by ASMB5 Module

The optional ASMB5-iKVM provides remote real-time and full control via accessing to the system based on a BIOS-level keyboard, video monitor, and mouse (KVM over Ethernet) from any local computer anywhere, anytime.

Wide Range OS Support

The P8B-E/4L supports wide-range mainstream servers and client OSs, including Windows 2008 R2, Windows 7, Cent OS, redhat, SuSE Linux and more, to meet the demands of different customers.

UEFI BIOS Support

To meet the trend of a large capacity hard disk drive, the P8B-E/4L contains UEFI BIOS. The UEFI BIOS supports the latest GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition format and is backward compatible with legacy MBR (Master Boot Record) partition formats, so users can easily manage very large capacity hard disk drives or partitions - for example, a single hard disk or single partition larger than 2.2TB.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat board so far

Pros: 4 1 Gbit ports, dedicated management port, lots of exp slots, support for 32GB ram, iKVM option

Cons: Nothing for me so far

Other Thoughts: Running this with a Xeon E3-1245v2 processor, 32 GB of ram (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239116), on a vSphere ESXi server with no problems.

4 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: IPMI 2.0 upgradeable, PCIE3.0 (with Xeon v2s), SATA3, high quality NICs, plenty of expansion slots including ASUS PIKE for SAS

Cons: DOA - RMAs cost time and money.

Other Thoughts: The (first) board would not even begin to post with a verified-working PSU, and Xeon e3-1230(v1). This silence is not golden. Awaiting replacement. I am sure when i receive a working board i will be quite pleased, and happy to recommend this product, but with a DOA, i feel responsible to report this possibility.

4 out of 5 eggs2012 Support Fixed

Pros: Good board after 2012 support has been fixed; it would be 5 eggs if the manuf. hadn't been caught with their pants down on a release so widely publicized. Using with 32GB of this ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239116 and no problems. IPMI "fat" application is flaky, but the web daemon is better anyhow. Works well with an IBM 5014 (LSI 9260) controller. Onboard NIC performance is stellar, and having a dedicated IPMI port is a welcome change from older boards from other manufacturers.

Cons: Sometimes when I'm sleeping I think the motherboard is watching me. Is that weird?

Other Thoughts: I'm still concerned about Asus' dedication to the server market and wouldn't deploy in production until they prove that they'll lead the way, but this is now a step in the right direction.

5 out of 5 eggsSolaris 11 11/11 boots on this motherboard

Pros: Correction to the previous review. After changing BIOS settings from default, Solaris 11 11/11 boots on this motherboard.

Cons: The first board worked only 20 minutes.

3 out of 5 eggsSolaris 11 11/11 does not boot

Pros: 4 x Intel server grade NICs, PIKE options, iKVM option

Cons: The first board worked only 20 minutes.

Other Thoughts: Solaris 11 11/11 does not boot on this board (Asus does not claim Solaris support for this board to be fair).

1 out of 5 eggsServer 2012

Pros: Quad Gig-E. Ivy-Bridge Support

Cons: No support for Windows Server 2012. As this is also sold in a 1U pre-assembled package, it would be good to label it as not supporting an operating system that is currently released. If you support the most recent CPUs it's utter nonsense that the most recent (available for 7mo now) OS would be as well

Other Thoughts: Will modify my review when ASUS gets a fix to let us boot into Windows Server 2012

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

This motherboard will support Windows 2012. A BIOS release that addresses this should be available this month.

2 out of 5 eggsNew BIOS Update, Still No 2012 Support

Pros: Review down below still is the same.

Cons: Review down below still is the same.

Other Thoughts: New BIOS version (2305) was released on 09/05/2012, but still did not fix the Windows Server 2012 problem. So far I have tried multiple versions (RC, RTM, GA) of Server 2012 Standard/Datacenter, Windows Storage Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 Foundation, and Hyper-V Server 2012...all not working. ASUS, fix this! I want to buy two more of these boards, but I am not going to until this is fixed.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We are currently evaluating Windows 2012 support for our server motherboards. Please check back at a later time for more information at http://support.asus.com.

1 out of 5 eggsNo 2012 Support?!? Illustration of what to expect from support?

Pros: -4 High Quality NICs
-2 RAID BIOS options
-Decent Layout

Cons: -No Server 2012 support!? (Confirmed on RTM)
-IPMI card and software is flaky. (Please note it's not included by default.)
-Bios options poorly illustrated

Other Thoughts: Server 2012 beta was released on 3/1/2012, over 6 months ago. This should be more than enough time for a company committed to decent support to make sure the SETUP PROGRAM will... BOOT. I'll change my review when/if they add Server 2012.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We are currently evaluating Windows 2012 support for our server motherboards. Please check back at a later time for more information at http://support.asus.com.

Regarding IPMI support, we do have the optional ASUS ASMB5-iKVM module for this motherboard. It is IPMI 2.0 compliant, provides effective remote server management and has an OS-independent and cross-platform interface for monitoring the server system such as temperature, voltage, and Fan status etc. Please see here for more information: http://www.asus.com/Server_Workstation/Features/Remote_Management/.

If any BIOS options that are unclear and you would like an explanation, please contact me at cl-benson@asus.com reference #C1037-4246.

2 out of 5 eggsNo support for Windows Server 2012?

Pros: Packed full of features.

Cons: No support for Windows Server 2012 yet. After trying the Developers Preview, I opted to wait for RTM to hit the Microsoft VL site, and that copy does the same thing. BSOD after loading the files, and support has no desire to help since it's not supported. I'm sure it will take a BIOS update to fix, but who knows how far away that will be. I'm really disappointed about this, but guess I will use Server 2008 R2 instead.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

This motherboard currently does not support Windows Server 2012. It may have support for it in the future. Please check back at a later time. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Benson

5 out of 5 eggssuperb cool asus single server board P8B-E/4L

Pros: reliable and high performance.
it supports raid 0, 1, 10, 5 on sata. if you install PIKE card, it can support sas up to 8 hard drives. the large memory up to 32GB is good enough for most applications. it supports ECC unbuffered memory and embeded video output for i3 and E3 xeon sandy bridge cpus. it has two PCI-e slots.
almost zero configuration after you change hardwares. Asus bios is easy to use.

Cons: no sound card integration.
no USB 3.0
pci-e slots are too close, it is not good for two asus GTX 570 (that own products have a confliction)

Other Thoughts: 24-pin power pins should locate down side and swaps with pike card. if so, most downside power supply PC cases don't need an extension cable to connect down side power supply box.
