Based on the AMD 970/SB950 chipset, ASUS M5A97 EVO ATX motherboard lets you take advantage of the powerful AMD AM3+ multi-core processors. You’ll enjoy up to 4.8 GT/s HyperTransport 3.0 (HT 3.0) interface speed, quad USB 3.0 & 6x SATA 6Gb/s and PCI Express 2.0 x16 graphics.

The M5A97 EVO is equipped with DIGI+ VRM technology in addition to the TPU and EPU processors that offer enhanced performance and power management. DIGI+ VRM power delivery allows a user to precisely adjust and control power settings digitally for precise power control and flexible tuning of their system. Also included is the intuitive and feature laden ASUS UEFI BIOS menu interface allowing users to control and adjust their motherboard settings through the use of a mouse-enabled interface for a superior user-friendly experience that BIOS does not offer.

  • newegg AMD FX /Phenom II /Athlon II /Sempron 100 Series Processors Support This motherboard supports AMD AM3+ multi-core processors with unique L3 cache and current AMD Phenom II /Athlon II /Sempron 100 Series processors. The AMD 970 Chipset is designed to support up to 4800MT HyperTransport 3.0 (HT 3.0) interface speed and PCI Express 2.0 x16 graphics.
  • newegg DIGI+ VRM ASUS DIGI+ VRM is an innovative, industry-leading technology that fully integrates Intel VRD12 specifications on a native level, greatly enhancing power to go far beyond the limits of analog designs. ASUS DIGI+ VRM acts as a digital controller to perfectly match digital power signal (SVID) requests from the CPU, eliminating digital-to-analog conversion lag. The exclusive dual driver and MOS design doubles the heat dissipation area with expanded cooling surfaces for improved thermal performance. Spacing components out over a wider area speeds up cooling to enhance reliability and stability. The same exclusive dual driver and MOS design also provides twice the CPU power supply with two complete power stages. This results in far greater phase load tolerances, so the CPU never has to wait for power to arrive, increasing performance and overclocking potential.
  • newegg TPU & EPU The TPU chip offers precise voltage control and advanced monitoring through Auto Tuning and TurboV functions. Auto Tuning offers a user friendly way to automatically optimize the system for fast, yet stable clock speeds, while TurboV enables unlimited freedom to adjust CPU frequencies and ratios for optimized performance in diverse situations. The EPU chip provides a real-time, dynamic power saving by automatically detecting current PC loadings and intelligently moderating power consumption. This also reduces fan noise and extends component longevity!
  • newegg UEFI BIOS The new ASUS UEFI BIOS is an Extensible Firmware Interface that complies with UEFI architecture, offering a user-friendly interface that goes beyond traditional keyboard-only BIOS controls to enable more flexible and convenient mouse input. Users can easily navigate the new UEFI BIOS with the same smoothness as their operating system. The exclusive EZ Mode displays frequently-accessed setup info, while the Advanced Mode is for experienced performance enthusiasts that demand far more intricate system settings. The UEFI BIOS also natively supports hard drives larger than 2.2TB in 64-bit, with full storage space utilization, helping deliver far more exciting computing than traditional BIOS versions!
  • newegg Quad USB 3.0 & 6 x SATA III AMD SB950 Southbridge natively supports next-generation Serial ATA (SATA) storage interface, which delivers up to 6.0 Gb/s data transfer rates. ASUS facilitates strategic USB 3.0 accessibility for both the front and rear panel - 4 USB 3.0 ports in total. Experience the latest plug & play connectivity at speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0.
  • newegg Auto Tuning - Auto System Level Up Achieve extreme yet stable overclocking results automatically with Auto Tuning! With built-in stability testing, Auto Tuning allows beginners to easily upgrade their CPU performance at no extra cost.

4 out of 5 eggsSimplicity

Pros: I used this mb to replace my first one. Ive never built a pc myself before so i was a little nervous at first but it was a breeze. Everything worked instantly and ive been smooth sailing since day one.

Cons: If my speakers are plugged in it makes an odd static/screechy noise when the computer is turning off which did not happen with my old MB. No real issue though just confused as to why.

Other Thoughts: I cant give a really specific review other than it works and was easy to install since it is the first MB ive had to install.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The bios is great! The board is easy to work with and install. The bios and system monitoring is awesome.

Cons: The sound card must be messed up! It always say's that the sound jack was unplugged or plugged in, then it will temporarily mute my computer sound. I don't know if it is the Realtek HD Audio manager or if it is the hardware.

4 out of 5 eggs1 Issue but a good board.

Pros: Had everything I needed for this build. I only recently ran out of SATA connectors but I am done expanding.

Cons: The rear IO shield doesn't line up with my case properly. I have verified it is the board and not my case.

Other Thoughts: Tried sticking this in a CM 690 II, and had to grind a bit of the rear IO panel down on the case because the board sat too low. Not a big deal. Still snaps in and doesn't get in the way off connectors, though usb can be a tiny hard to plug in some spots.

2 out of 5 eggsCrossfire will not work

Pros: Using a mouse wile in bios is really good, overclocks my fx 4100 good

Cons: crossfire will not work on this board so do not buy it if you wish to use crossfire, I know it states that it is compatible but at the moment xfire will only work if you use ccc 12.10 and even then performance is horrible, the amd 970 chip on this board is garbage. I warn people do not buy this board and think very carefully about purchasing motherboards that contain AMD hardware.

Other Thoughts: getting support for problems with this board is hard amd just ignore you and asus take you on a rollercoaster ride

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the performance of crossfire was not that good. Usually with the 970 chipset when you crossfire the two cards they will be at x16 and x4. Please make sure you update your drivers of your VGA card or try putting the higher end card in the x4 and the lower end card in the x16 to see if that will help with the performance increase.

3 out of 5 eggsTroublesome board

Pros: Cheap
Seemingly nice features
Unlocked board

Cons: Randomly shuts off. No amount of updates can solve the issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you are getting random shut offs. Can you tell me the build of your unit.

Have you tried one having the bare minimum components connected such as 1 stick of RAM.

Where does it shut off from? Are you able to POST and get into the O/S?

If you have any questions or comments you can email me again at cl-jeffrey@asus.com which I reside in the U.S

1 out of 5 eggsmy first 970a and I was in love

Pros: Great while it lasted
Took me where I wanted, which was 4.0 and 4.2ghz

Cons: The cpu started to fluctuate at high clocks and it wouldn't crash or show signs of less performance it just didn't care, it ran with the light on multiple stress test. So I detuned the clocks back down to 4.0ghz. Eventually, my motherboard started to show signs of fatigue and had enough. a slight notice from the frozen desktop display said "I don't want to operate anymore, MeE le tired!"I got furious with the m5a97 evo, so i kept resetting the computer and I was yelling out "POST!!! Whyyyy u nooOOo post?!? :'(" a tear almost touch my wavy mocha carpet, flooded with disappointed, only a single red light was shown. I no longer have love for this board.

Other Thoughts: The cpu_led light is solid red. Dram_led light blinks red when mem check is pressed.
No beeping post, pmw/aux fans running at 100%
I have got to say this motherboard lacks a lot of features that I would expect to be on a amd 9 series board

This is toasted

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear about the issue you had with the motherboard. The overclocking setting may be set too high, and the motherboard cannot handle those parameters, therefore no POST. In some cases, the motherboard can automatically recover via the ASUS C.P.R.(CPU Parameter Recall) feature. However, in case that it does not, try clearing CMOS using onboard jumpers. If there's no change, we suggest to RMA the motherboard using the online submittal form at: http://vip.asus.com/eservice/usa_rmaserv.aspx or call us at 1-812-282-2787. To continue support, please contact me at cl-benson@asus.com (reference #C1037-9106 in the subject line). Thank you.

5 out of 5 eggsEpic Mobo

Pros: This thing pairs great with my AMD Phenom II 6-core. I purchased this board after my old one's temp sensors went out. This board puts the other one to shame, I get the best out of my CPU. It also leaves room for a CPU upgrade in the future, 8-core here I come.

Cons: It lacks a PCIe 3.0 slot.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this board to anyone who needs a great board that will not break the bank. This one is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 eggsits a good motherboard... but has some flaws

Pros: the raid driver works perfectly, running 2x 500gb western digital 7200rpm hdd.

capable of 32gb ram ( ive got 4x 4gb ripjaws in in now)

Cons: cable management was kinda tricky

DO NOT USE THE FRONT PANEL'S AUDIO because there is a major crosstalk issue

no headset only rear port

Other Thoughts: it being discontinued makes me wonder if ill get any support for it

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems so far with this board

Pros: UEFI is a nice thing to work with. Get a 7.2 Experience rating from windows 7. Running it with Ripjaws 8GB ram and the eye candy is good. No problems updating BIOS.

Cons: No Cons yet we will see how long the board lasts.

2 out of 5 eggsWas a good motherboard

Pros: none its broken

Cons: I overpayed for this 8 months ago
Its mic port broke last week
completely ruined its actual "gaming" motherboard quality with no longer being able to play and talk to friends

Other Thoughts: discontinued so yes it was a waste of money on my part and proves it is a flawed piece

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the MIC issue you had with this motherboard. Since the MIC no longer function, please RMA the motherboard to us by using the following form at: http://vip.asus.com/eservice/usa_rmaserv.aspx or call 1-812-282-2787 so that our technicians can repair or replace it as needed.
