5 out of 5 eggsPerfect - But not after some struggles

Pros: This board has everything you will ever need. Period. Unless you need the extra PCI-E slots, there's really no reason to get the -E version. I didn't think it would fit into my older Lian Li case, but it's just ever so slightly larger than the AMD board I was replacing. Installing the CPU, RAM and everything else was a breeze. I love how with the Corsair H100i, you don't have to install a back plate, just screw it directly into the 2011 bracket and you're done. The board does take a few seconds to post, during which time it is flashing all sorts of Q codes at you. At first this concerned me, but once it went to "A0" and "AA" you're golden. It accepted all 64gigs of Mushkin RAM and all I had to do was enable the XMP profile and it automatically clocked the RAM at its advertised 2133Mhz speed. It also bumped the processor up from the stock 3.4Ghz to 3.8Ghz.

Cons: There is one major con that can happen if you're unlucky and get older stock. The BIOS - You need version 4306 to run the Ivybridge-E processors (which nowadays most everybody will be). I got a board that had been sitting in a warehouse and had the ancient 0802 BIOS on it. So I did what the ASUS support sites told me to do and started the process to flash the BIOS with the BIOS flashback utility. It never would work. Everything I did it just seemed to laugh at me. I called support, the guy walked me through the exact same steps... Nothing. Finally he said we could either RMA the board or they could ship me a new BIOS chip. I opted for the BIOS chip since I didn't want to take everything apart. Next day, I remove the old and put in the new chip. Same symptoms. It turned out they sent me the wrong one. Ok, fine, stuff happens, they're small chips that are hard to read. They send me another one for free. Next day, I install the new chip. The board doesn't even power on. I call support, they decide it be best if we RMA the board. I send it in. I get it back a week later. The board still does not power on. Not even using the onboard power button. No motherboard lights come on when I plug in the 24-pin power. At this point I'm kinda mad, I've got a $570 processor and $1000 worth of RAM just sitting here and it's been a month since I bought the board and I haven't even seen it post. I call support, they run around and ask everyone what to do. Finally I demand that I just get a brand new board. They agree. I send it in, they overnight me a brand new board. Check the bios and it is the newest (at the time) 4505 BIOS. I install the CPU and RAM and a dinky video card and it POST's!

Long story short... If you get an older board with an ancient BIOS, you may have a long road ahead of you. But it is completely worth it in the end.

The only good thing about this Con is that ASUS did make everything right in the end. At no point did they say that they were not going to honor the warranty. They even refunded me the $40 for the new BIOS chip and the overnight shipping I paid for. So ASUS warranty service is amazing.

Other Thoughts: If you've stuck around after the con's section then Congratulations!

Don't let the whole BIOS thing keep you from buying this board.

I'm not using this PC for anything that it should actually be used for. I'm not running any workstation software, video editing, and I'm playing a game every once in a while.

I basically have a 6core/12thread, 64 Gigs of RAM email and internet machine.

But - Everything it does, it does very quickly. I'm very glad that I went with this system.

2 out of 5 eggsCan only use 5 of the 6 slots

Pros: My board shipped with the latest BIOS
Workstation quality board
On-board power and reset

Cons: Can only use 5 of the 6 PCIe slots. Adding a card in the 6th slot causes a d4 q-code. This is a PCI resource allocation error. The board loops with this error. I've disabled all non-essential devices and tried setting the GEN speed to 1 and 2. Nothing works. I needed all 6 slots but right now I cannot find a solution to the problem.

Other Thoughts: My build:
N82E16813131798 - ASUS P9X79 WS LGA 2011
N82E16819116939 - Intel Core i7-4930K Ivy Bridge-E

2 out of 5 eggsPowerful but Problems

Pros: All the bells and whistles you would ever want. Overclocking ability

Cons: Bad Marvell Ports, Blue screen when installing drivers. 2 min post time if any device is plugged in. Sent it back twice and came back twice without fixing the problem.

Other Thoughts: This board is very good if it was working properly. I don't like Asus Product support. It falls short, sending it back twice without a fix is not acceptable.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy This Board

Pros: None

Cons: The first board that I got from Newegg had a bent CPU pin. It came here like that. From what I have read, Newegg often blames the end user for that condition and you get stuck with a bad motherboard. So, I rma it to newegg and they do send me another motherboard, but this time the motherboard does not work correctly as the marvell sata ports will not remember that you have enabled ssd caching. So since newegg delayed me for quite a while because they said that a hard drive had been shipped (it was not) then it was more than 30 days and they would not rma it again for me. (I'll never order from newegg again; anything big anyway). So I ship it to asus and got it back today. Asus did not even touch the motherboard. it came back in exaclty the same state as before with the exact same problem. I guess they were just too lazy to see if the marvell ports were working correctly that it would remember to save the ssd caching state. That must just take too long to check that for a customer. I mean you have to wait for it to initialize and that takes too much time I guess. Too much trouble; why do that when we already got his money right!

Other Thoughts: I WILL NEVER EVER BUY FROM ASUS AGAIN! I don't even know if I will ship it back again for another rma. I don't think they can handle it. They already got my money so what do i matter? I am just glad that I did not buy Asus video cards (sli). It has been two full months and I still don't have a working computer.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

I am sorry that you are having issues with the motherboard. At your earliest convenience, please contact me through email, and we can discuss this case further. 5 out of 5 eggsBest Board Ever

Pros: First off other users say that they have lots of knowledge. I don't mean to dog them, but I have every top IT industry certification including CCIE. The board is down right awesome! This board renewed my faith in ASUS again (after being not impressed with several boards and even other manufacturers). The only problem I had initially was it would not go to sleep properly in Win 7 64-bit. The latest BIOS flash fixed it immediately. Follow the compatibility docs and you'll be impressed with this board. This board easily overclocks to 4.6 Ghz.

Cons: Would say the sleep, but ASUS fixed that so none.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

Pros: Great while it worked

Cons: I somehow received a board that does not have a serial number sticker on the PCIe slot like it should. That means I have no warranty and am unable to get a replacement for a board that failed after 9 months. I've purchased several of these boards through NewEgg and the first time I have a problem I can't get any help from Asus.

Other Thoughts: These boards are all under warranty as they are all less than 3 years old. Asus does nothing but make the RMA process harder for end users with their requirements.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

If I may, I would like to help.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS Support is terrible!

Pros: A very nice motherboard that supports the 2011 Xeon processors.
Lots of PCI-e slots for my video card and raid card.
USB Bios flash is a very nice feature and no worries about bricking my board.

Cons: No I/O shield in the box. I was told by ASUS Support that I had to return the motherboard for a replacement on the motherboard I've installed or PAY $20 more dollars on a nearly $400 dollar top of the line motherboard!

Other Thoughts: I''ve spent over a $1000 dollars this year on Asus parts from the new 27" IPS monitor to the AC66U router and now this motherboard. My first laptop was an ASUS laptop and lasted me 4 years. This type of service is what's going to stop me from buying ASUS ever again.

4 out of 5 eggsLot's of extra work

Pros: Very nice board, lots of very nice features. Lots of included extras. Outstanding Asus build quality. The USB Bios Flashback is particularly useful, especially for for Ivy-Bridge owners. I really enjoy the included 9 pin serial bracket they give you with the board, it's not often you get that with new boards.

Cons: The bios load on the boards I received did not support the new Ivy Bridge chips. It took a lot of work and research to get the board to boot with my particular CPU.

Other Thoughts: Gone is the old days where you had to send your board off to get the bios updated for the latest CPUs, or have an older chip laying around to do the update.

If you are having issues with your Ivy-bridge chip with this board, check out the Bios Flashback feature to flash the bios to the latest version with Ivy-bridge support.

Pros: No trouble at all from the product, works great with my i7 3930k and GTX 780 SLI, one of the better boards out on the market for a LGA 2011 socket

Cons: nothing honestly
