5 out of 5 eggsGreat board

Pros: Quad LAN, insane RAM capacity, SATA3, dual 2011, Lots of PCIe options, very rock solid board.

We've had 2 boards fail... out of 32 purchased. If you know how to math, that's a 6.25% failure rate. Not bad!

Cons: The ASMB6-iKVM module is totally useless. We have our system set up to power on when power is applied through a switched PDU, and having the module plugged in adds an extra 3 minutes to startup time. This no be good.

Other Thoughts: This is an SSI EEB motherboard. Very VERY specifically, these are not compatible with normal EATX cases. You need to purchase a server case with compatibility for EEB motherboards, such as the Rosewill RSV-L4000 or Silverstone ST-GD07B cases.

5 out of 5 eggsGood so far

Pros: Lots of RAM, quad LAN. Been rock solid so far.

Cons: Only worry I had, was that one of the gold cpu pins tried to fall out, but we pushed it back in, and it worked fine.

Other Thoughts: I feel like this mb is going to continue to be solid.

1 out of 5 eggsbuyer beware ~ update review

Pros: Asus is normally an excellent motherboard company and I highly recommend them. this experience has shattered my illusion that they are perfect though... "sniff".

Newegg customer support has been 50/50. half the time they are helpful half the time they are horrific. guess it all depends on who you get when you call in and how good of a day they are having. word of advice if you get someone that isn't helpful just hang up or end the chat and try for someone else because the next person probably will be helpful. Newegg did contact me and offer me a $30 credit to help cover the $300 in overnight fees and the countless hours we spent diagnosing the fact they are sending out a different motherboard than is advertised and the hours spent with customer service convincing them of that.

Cons: the motherboard pictured is NOT the one we received. the one pictured is ???? The one I received is the z9pe-d16 rev 1 which is the first release of this board that has lots and lots of issues. they supposedly fixed this with bios updates but none of the problems we had were fixed with any bios update, Asus is still getting back to me as so far they have escalated this to the engineering team and they are stumped as well.

Also the one pictured in this ad has 4 black sata ports pictured next to the white sata ports but the one I received does not have these.
Asus tech support has no idea why this motherboard does not work with any super micro power supply/case, neither does super micro. but we tried this motherboard on 4 different super micro PS and it did not work on any of them but worked on a standard run of the mill power supply and the other cases all have fully functional servers in them. all the super micro power supplies we have are powering Asus boards.
Summary: don't buy this board if you want to use a super micro server class cases or power supplies, also another reviewer said it did not work in another case/ps, why? why in the world do we have to worry about a motherboard working with a specific power supply? to me this beyond unbelievable. because this board did not work we had to go with a much more expensive Intel board that did not have nearly as much functionality as this one and since the customer had already been quoted on a price and the features we had to eat the $300 difference in cost. I have always bought Asus because it is normally a seamless, problem less build but this one has taken an incredibly long time and incredibly frustrating and the lack of support from Asus, Newegg & Super Micro is the worst. Granted

Other Thoughts: Newegg did allow a return for a refund on all the items but it took a long time to get them to. I doubt they will offer more than a $30 credit for all the hours spent or the hundreds spent on overnights which is beyond frustrating spending hours on the phone with each company only to get no where and then have to spend more with another company to get a functioning product. **sigh** selavee

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry you are having issues this model. I am glad, however, you were able to get a refund. With that said, did ASUS ever get back to you regarding this case? If you want, I can check to see if the items in your build you had are compatible. I would just need the model numbers for the items and we can go from there. Your reference number for this case is 3091410.

1 out of 5 eggsavoid

Pros: I've used asus for years with zero issues this board is terrible.

Cons: bought this with a supermicro case. turns out that we got 2 bad cases, on the third supermicro case we finally got a working one but is incompatible with this board. asus tech support no help after 2 weeks (they are normally excellent)
ordered another board and the same problem. new very unhelpful in returning items past the 30 days despite getting 2 bad items in a row that extended returns out.

Other Thoughts: i'm beyond disappointed in this board. tried this motherboard in 3 other supermicro cases and so far none of them work. these boards work fine with a standard $50 power supply but not with a server class case? wheres the logic there?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry you are having issues with the server. You mentioned in your message that the server did not work, what exactly was not working? Was it not powering up or was it something else? Also, did you confirm that all the parts you were installing were compatible with the motherboard? If I may, I would like to help. Please send the requested information to my email, and we can discuss this case further. Your reference number for this case is 3091360.

3 out of 5 eggsDoing fine with Debian/Xen

Pros: Good feature set, 4 LANs. Using for VPS hosts on a Debian Xen "Dom0". Everything seems well-supported in Linux.

Cons: Slow to post. I have read that the BMC controller may be the cause. Failed to boot after an emergency, even after selecting a valid bootable SSD drive, until we moved drives around and back. Unfortunately multiple reboots to debug this failure meant an hour of slow posts and a long downtime period.

Other Thoughts: Have yet to try the PIKE RAID option but will be installing one soon.

1 out of 5 eggsServer 2012 - Failure in a Box

Pros: Decent server motherboard

Cons: Server 2012 won't install on this motherboard. Multiple reports of this and still no fix from ASUS. $500 piece of junk.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsFail to install windows server 2003 on AHCI mode

Pros: Nice board and a lot of features.

Cons: I purchased this mother board few days ago and I was so excited for a new windows server 2003 enterprise edition but now I have no hope. On the spec it said support a lot of os including windows server 2003 but when I try to install window server 2003 EE in AHCI mode and after press F6 to install sata driver and finally I got this message : the file iaStorA.sys is corrupted, no hope. I called asus tech support and it seem like they know the probem but don't know how to solve it and they tell me that they will send this issue to engineer department. I am asus fan for so long and this disappointed me. If the board can't support windows server 2003 on AHCI mode then just say so. I want to let any guys that don't buy this board if you want to install server 2003 on AHCI mode.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issue you had with the motherboard.

We tested Window 2003 on this motherboard in AHCI mode with BIOS version 0805 using Intel driver version V3.1.0.1068 and had no problems throughout the install. Please try to download the Intel driver again from http://downloadcenter.intel.com and retry.

4 out of 5 eggsStable, fast, booted first time.

Pros: Combined with 2 Xeon CPUs this board turned on the first try and works as expected.

Cons: Had to change a jumper on the MB to switch to Intel Raid because bios was having issues with LSI's controller. Could be a setting, but Intel just worked, so stopped caring :) . Lack of USB3 internal ports is a bummer too.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a solid base for your dual Xeon system, this is a good board.

3 out of 5 eggsOlder version of board

Pros: Good board with a lot of functionality. Mainly using it for virtualization.

Cons: Lan port 1 is dead only after a few weeks of ownership. Also, the board that New Egg is selling is an older revision of the board. The picture here and the product received has 4 black sata ports which have been deprecated from the board. Please review the ASUS website to see what I mean. I confirmed the deprecation with a product manager at ASUS.

I've taken two eggs off for the above.

Other Thoughts: ASUS support has been good so far. Their advanced server replacement program allows overnight shipping of a new motherboard to you if determined the unit is defective. However, it seems to be taking them a few days to ship out the replacement item.
