1 out of 5 eggsDOA very unhappy

Pros: None this board hadn't worked from the minute I took it out of the packaging

Cons: Where to start. I was putting together my computer and plugged everything in, turned it on and could not get the boot device light to go off. The hard drives are good, yet the first time the American Megatrends screen came it didn't show any devices. I couldn't even get into the Bios. It would shut off after 15 seconds. I contacted support to get it fixed I sent my board in and got it back 2 weeks later on 4/15/15. I put everything back together and STILL can't get past the American Megatrends screen or boot into the Bios. This time however when the American Megatrends screen comes on it shows the boot devices. I contacted support again and WOW I asked what they did to fix the board and the lady I spoke with couldn't tell me. But she told me that the board should be fixed or obviously they wouldn't have sent it out. When I explained I wouldn't be calling if it were fixed she said I could send it back in to repair. I told her no the board is just 2 months old and hasn't worked from day1 and asked to have a new board sent out. Sure if I put a credit card hold down. WHAT I have already paid for it why should I put a hold on a defective product that still couldn't be fixed. When I asked to speak to a supervisor or someone else she got extremely snippy and rude she said someone would call me back. Well still waiting for that. I have sent in emails and made phone calls to no avail.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Wouldn't know as this board was DOA out of the box. Can not boot into any device or the bios

Cons: Where to start. Had this board since February and when I went to set up the computer I couldn't get the board to boot into any device let alone the bios. It would stay on the American Megatrends screen of death for 15 sec. then shut off. Fine work with enough motherboards to know that one of the components has to be bad. Contacted Asus support as I was just out of the 30 Newegg warranty and they had me send the board in. They had it 2 weeks I just got it back and I STILL have the same issue. ASUS support has been a joke. I contacted them again have submitted emails as well as phone calls waiting for some form of contact back outside of the scripted tech support. This has been the biggest joke! I am sure if the board were to be working it would be a good board. If I can get this resolved I would change my rating but so far ASUS your service has been poor and since I can't give you a negative rating you get 1 egg.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointed

Pros: Didn't fry my video card or power supply.

Cons: Only lasted 3 hours, and failed while I was installing Windows updates and installing Microsoft office. Pretty unhappy. This is a top of the line board and it didn't work long.

I've been building systems for the last 9 years, and have installed many ASUS boards. In that amount of time, this is the first ASUS board that hasn't lasted more than 4 years. 3 hours is not good. Although its expected to have a bad board sometimes. I'll do a RMA on this board, the processor and possibly the memory. I want to be safe just in case those got fried.

4 out of 5 eggsLike board but...

Pros: Everything is as I expected. Also, great price, with rebate.

Cons: My ONLY complaint isn't with the board but the rebate. I received the VISA card, as expected, and was waiting for another so I could apply both to another purchase. Lo and behold, you CANNOT. The suggestion was to buy a newepp gift card and use that. BUT the gift cards come in set prices AND have a $1.99 shipping charge and are not immediate, two or three day processing. Never again. I'll spend these on A****n instead.

Other Thoughts: Even calling newegg was no help, so keep this in mind with rebates, if you want to come back and spend them here.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent MoBo, great value

Pros: Used this in a gaming rig build, with AMD 8350, EVGA SuperNova 850 PS, and Asus 670GTX Video, in a Corsair 330R case. This mobo made it an easy build.

Very solid construction
Great utilities and software
Plenty of real estate around the CPU to accommodate big coolers.
Plenty of backplane mounted ports
Some very nice touches - a connection block for the case leads so you can do that annoying task outside of the case then plug the whole thing in. Like that cables and connectors were all included.

Cons: Side mounted SATA ports can be difficult to reach, you might want to connect these first...

5 out of 5 eggsM5A99FX PRO R2.0 review

Pros: *New item packed well, sealed in factory-fresh box.
*It all worked exactly as it should, with zero issues on first boot.
*Bios flashed with USB stick in designated space worked exactly as advertised.
*A great board for the FX-8350; runs sweet & steady, auto-clocks in bios and in software.
*Most excellent configurations in bios-booting with many great features, its fun if not addictive to play with using added options of Asus software.
*Excellent VRMs & heatsinks on this MB for FX CPUS (NO skimping allowed in the cooling department please).
*The Bios was almost up-to-date as delivered; it’s a sincere pleasure to use such great multiple bios features with MBR booting in Win7x64 in multi-boots with earlier Win versions. Win 8 and GPT has never been my cup of tea, for full, honest disclosure in reviewing my use of this board. I gaven't gotten to multi-booting w/Linux (yet), but this MB performs flawlessly for me in all respects in the short time I've owned it, in spite of the negatives expressed by some.

I gaven't gotten to multi-booting w/Linux (yet), but this MB performs flawlessly for me in all respects in the short time I've owned it, in spite of the negatives expressed by some.
*Study of this MB is recommended and necessary, especially if you aren't familiar with Asus MBs (or other MBs in the 990FX class). The initial curve may seem too steep for a few new owner-builders, but the MB is well worth all of the effort you expend in learning it & caring for it, This MB is a good deal and excellent performer for the FX8350; a sale and/or rebate makes it even better.

For further pros, read the fine manual (could be better written) then research all the user and builder forums as well as the many videos available for this board.

Cons: No cons for this MB. I like everything about it. I was puzzled; how could this MB be so great from bootup on for me, with such negatives people have posted? If you can't buy a $200+ MB, but have read the fine manual, have an FX 8-core CPU, a quality PSU, checked your memory specs and taken time to thoroughly research the many forums & YouTube vids done on this MB, it will likely do anything you want for it's life, using normal to mild clocks. (Melting by attempting 6 ghtz nitrogen-tricks isn’t recommended). DO go for serious water-cooling, you’ll be happy you do. As for Asus’s rebate process, I've never seen a proven primer for doing rebates, so this is a suggestion resulting from those I've submitted over the years. We all dislike the means, but do it for the money. I staple and/or tape the UPC cutout from the box onto the rebate form. This eliminates excuses of ‘non-enclosure’ of the cutout. There's an address 'cutout' on the rebate form that you can tape to the envelope, but if your printer works on envelopes or you have a typewriter, or can legibly hand-print the mail-to address in black ink it’ll get there. Some people question this step but it’s paid for itself in my experience; buy a 'Proof of Mailing' certificate from your USPS clerk. It only costs $1.30, the clerk might look at you as if you are daft, or may try to up-sell you to 'certified mail” but repeat your request; it disproves the rebate denial claim, "We never received your submission." The proof-of-mailing certificate shows both addresses, is postmarked by the clerk, & trumps that sort of nonsense; it holds up in court, trust me. If waiting 8 weeks isn’t your speed, get a fast rebate for $1, “as soon as your submission is approved.” Be friends with your postal persons, bring a camera when you mail the rebate, ask if they mind posing the locally canceled stamped envelope for a memento. Photograph the entire submission, with the time-date-stamp on each photo before placing and sealing in the envelope; keep the photos until your rebate comes in. It's cheap insurance to verify you actually did the work. The cost is $2.30, a 1st class stamp, prep time & a stop at the post office for a $12.50 return on a measly $15 rebate. BTW, if you can read one of these microscopic UPC stickers, you should be flying F22s. This step is optional; for my own peace of mind, I put a Nikon into macro-HD; after enlarging, I could actually read the UPC. I stapled a copy onto the submission. I hope these tips help someone get their money. The rebate shouldn't denied if you document it this way. Nit-picking; I don’t care for how the Asus site is laid out; it's clunky & could be improved. As for responses from Asus support to Egg reviewers, these seem to be from the other side of the International dateline and are just hilarious! How bored could a support tech be to keep sending the same scripted reply for almost every reviewer? I sincerely hope I don't find myself in need of this sort of clueless support.

Other Thoughts: A client who owns Asus routers & MBs recommended them to me. His word was enough for me to give them a try & I'm glad I did; I bought them. I'm just a tad puzzled; how could so many faulty units escape from Asus? Over the years I've read countless reviews here and submitted a few. New units can fail on boot up; it’s rare but happens. If you do your research and be methodical when you build, the problems will be rare. This MB was all that was in stock when I built this rig that would do the job, but compared well to other MBs in cost and features. It’s running an 8350, 8 GB of GSkill RAM and 1 graphics card. It can likely handle all the ram and the graphics cards you prefer. The Asus software doesn’t use much memory in my tests & compares very favorably with any other vender's offerings. The board's first pre-OS-install bios-boot auto-overclock was much better than expected; it took the 8350 from 4 to 4.3 ghtz without any effort. Those with an 8120 can match an 8350, but just spend the extra few bucks for the 8350 & you’ll be happier. The CPU buy was seasonal, as was Corsair H100i and the Define R4 case. DO WATERCOOL. The 990FX+SB950 chipset has worked well for all of my efforts and the digital power features are solid. After running stock &mild clocks, then working with all of the extra features over time, I've had a lot of fun seeing how much I can apply to the board & system without ever seeing the CPU meters constantly pegged. Thought; when you see 'Tech Knowledge-5 Eggs' on the heading, if you’re experienced in building & servicing PCs, then claim it. I'm retired from the industry, my builds are my hobby. I've used AMD for years, for power & value. With this MB/CPU/Ram it’s possible to render, browse & download at the same time (if you can watch an HD film on your TV while doing all that, you’re truly talented). Overclockers-gamers have done solid work with this MB. The core cost of my build was under $500; $129 for the MB, $80-Corsair-refurbed H100i, $55-8 GB of GSkill RAM, $85-PSU, an R4 case, $70. Graphics card specs & performances are overly hyped & too wildly-priced; for video, I believe what works for me. Personal preference; pick the video card you like that works the way you do, that's the right way. I added extra140mm fans for low-noise, solid airflow in the R4 case; of all the cases I've owned or used, this is the only mid-tower case I've had zero problem recommending to anyone. I reviewed-recommended it as such on Egg. For a good MB like this, a solidly designed case with great airflow & excellent filtering is a must; this build rarely kicks the H100i pump, fans or push-pull case fans above low speed, depending on how heavy a load I've put into it. This MB is worthy, buy it! If this continues to perform flawlessly, I'll buy another Asus for my next build. If your significant other or wife sees the wisdom in letting you invest in this MB for your system, do the right thing; take them out for dinner to show your gratitude.

5 out of 5 eggsSecond review

Pros: Nice features, overclocks good.

Cons: See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: My first review after receiving the board was 3 eggs, the socket temps were extremely high vs. core temps with my fx8320. I had an evo 212 cooler and it kept core temps in check but socket temps went through the roof at stock volts. I undervolted and got everything in check at 4.0 ghz but the socket temps were still 20c higher than core temps. I picked up a H110 water cooler from a friend( although I really didn't need it as the core temps were ok with the evo212) and still the socket temps were way to high to go any higher with the voltage for a higher clock than 4.0 on the cpu. I was ready to give up and settle for what I had (4.0) and call it good, but I just couldn't do that lol. So after some thinking I cut a hole in the side of my case so I could mount a 120mm fan to blow on the socket from the backside of the motherboard and low and behold the 20c difference I was seeing between core and socket went to 6c, I have the fx8320 clocked at 4.5 stable and have room for more. My earlier review kinda bashed the board for socket temps but I really spoke too soon. I will say you will run into sky rocketing socket temps with this board unless you get some air the backside of the socket. Is that the boards fault? I can't say it is. These FX chips take alot of power, power = heat . Cool the backside of the socket and you will be all good. I couldn't be happier with the results and the performance of the board after figuring out what needed to be done. If I could take back the review with 3 eggs I would and if I could give 6 eggs on this review I would. Great board!
