5 out of 5 eggsGreat motherboard

Pros: No problems, plenty of USB headers and SATA ports. The BIOS has an awesome feature called boot override(allows you to temporarily change the boot order and is very convenient when installing windows) I plan to use this motherboard (or its successor in future builds.)

Cons: NONE

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing board that has worked well

Pros: It works. It has support for USB 3.0 (and front panel headers). It has plenty of expansion boards and SATA ports. The BIOS has a feature called boot override that lets you chose which drive to boot off of(for the next time only) without changing the boot order.(e.g.:plugin USB windows installer, enter bios, override boot to the USB, and you don't have to go back and change BIOS settings). Plan to use this motherboard (or a successor to it) for future builds.

Cons: NONE

1 out of 5 eggsHELP!...ASUS!

Pros: Seemed be best for the AMD FX8320

Cons: Seems DOA. Hands in "Setup is preparing your computer for first use".

Other Thoughts: Finally got the chance to build the PC. Had to order a new case as it did not fid the mid-tower I had. Now, I've tried everything...swapped hard drives, used two different Windows 7 installation types (clean install from upgrade media and win 7 full retail). Looked online to see how others resolved problems, tried tweaking. Nothing!!!! Even cloned the drive from the PC I was replacing. Windows finally booted up. But...network, DVD, video either did not work, or worked at a bare minimum. Windows rating = 1.0 due to graphics (installed XFX Radeon R7 240).

I'm thinking...this board needs to be replaced!

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I had to get a replacement after I messed the first one up. This motherboard gets the job done well for the price. It's pretty roomy with how things are placed and the colors are nice too. No other problems so far.

Cons: Had to get a replacement after I easily messed the first one up but after that I had no problems.

5 out of 5 eggsVery High Quality

Pros: 6 SATA ports, 4 RAM slots(up-gradable to 32 GB), USB 3.0, this thing has everything I could ever need and works flawlessly.

Cons: Haven't found any cons as of yet.

Other Thoughts: This has been the greatest motherboard purchase I have ever made. Everything runs beautifully and I am very happy with it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Bought this over a year ago to fix a fried board.
It has a nice layout and features for the price.
Auto-Overclock is very handy if you wish to either get the best performance out of your system or under-clock it to keep it nice and quiet.

Cons: The temp sensors on it seem to be a bit off. After installing the AI Suite on it, I've been getting some weird random temperature errors (Motherboard running at 112 degrees Centigrade; which is just over 233 Fahrenheit, for example). I use HWMonitor since then and kept an eye on it. Sometimes it would report the same degree in temperature, most of the time it would not. It's never caught on fire and it's been very reliable but for something as sensitive like a temp probe, it shouldn't be having this problem.

RAM: When I originally bought it, I had a Kingston 4GB, a G-Skill RipJaw 2GB and 2 G-Skill Sniper 4GB sticks. Even tho the G-Skill Sniper was listed on the approved vender, those 2 sticks didn't work (they work fine in other machines). The 2 odd sticks, not listed on the RAM list, worked fine but the motherboard only saw the 6GB as 1 RAM card. Which is a bit disappointing, especially since the auto-overclock worked just fine.
I then received 32 GB of RAM as a gift, another G-Skill RipJaw. They work perfectly even tho they weren't on the list, except for the fact that I can't use the auto-overclock or the manual overclock it, but that was more a convenience than a necessity.

Fan profile: I replaced my 90mm rear fan with an 80mm Noctua fan, which ran perfect and was much quieter. I decided to add a side fan and hooked it up to Fan0 on the main board. Since doing that, the fan was running at 100% all the time. I had to use another program to drop the fan down to 60% until I could figure out the problem. According the AI Suite, it shouldn't have been doing that, but as I looked into the motherboard's fan profile in the UEFI menu, it turns out it was set to max from 0 degrees C, to 100 degrees C. While it was a very mild annoyance, it was a simple fix but it shouldn't have needed to have been done in the first place.

Other Thoughts: One thing I wish it had, was a USB 3.0 Com port on the motherboard. It does have a few USB 3.0 ports in the back but if your case has them on the front, then they are dead ports without an adapter to get some function out of them (USB 2.0).
Also wish the motherboard worked with more variety of RAM. I've never had a problem buying RAM as long as it was from the supported kind (DDR3 1600, for example). This board gave me the most troubles with that.

5 out of 5 eggsPleased

Pros: Good layout, cable management is efficient
Intelligently planned BIOS with lots of functionality
Plenty of IO

Cons: Not a HUGE deal - the CPU power plugins are right at the top of the board, which was tight in my Challenger case, which houses the PSU on the bottom of the case, with an exhaust fan on the top. The plugs and cables cleared the fan by maybe 1/16 of an inch. Just had to tie back the cables.

Other Thoughts: Fantastic board with lots of easy to use functionality, and a great price.

2 out of 5 eggsMy 3 Years Experience with this board

Pros: It went back to ASUS for repair twice, and both times they turned it around pretty quickly.

Cons: Lots of stability issues. Random lockups, especially when plugging in an USB device. Even when it doesn't totally lock up, it often does not recognize a USB device that's plugged in, or it will take for ever to find it, and suddenly it will blue screen. (see other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I got this board along with FX-8150 and G.Skill RipjawX DDR3 1600 RAMS during the Black Friday sale back in 2012 here on newegg.

If you go to the Asus support website for this board, you'll notice that ASUS has released no less than 17 BIOS updates with many updates simply labeled "Improve system stability".

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/HelpDesk_Download/

On one hand it's nice to see that ASUS is working on trying to solve the issues with this board with BIOS updates. One the other hand it really points out to the fact that this board has some serious stability issues, that my experience is not an isolated case.

I've been building systems for about 24 years; ever since the original Windows XP release. I typically build a new system about every 3 years, with a refresh about every 18 month in between. I've built a lot of systems, and I've had good experience with ASUS products in the past, but sadly, this has been one of the most frustrating mobo I've owned and I really cannot recommend it.
