5 out of 5 eggsASUS M5A97

Pros: installed and worked thats always good

Cons: the pci-s x1 connector gets covered up by the graphics card there is 1 more below it but if you use that 1 it covers up 1 of the graphic card fans so i have an idea put more pci-e connectors away and above the graphics card please ?

Other Thoughts: got this to replace an outdated Gigabyte motherboard did read the reviews btw im not using the onboard audio or lan

5 out of 5 eggsSolid and reliable board

Pros: I paired this with an AMD-FX 8320. Despite some reviews, I think this board is rock solid. I haven't had any issues with it. It even recognized my RAM at the correct speed (2133) without tweaking.

The BIOS is out of this world and easy to use. Even if I wasn't tech savvy I would probably be able to navigate and use the BIOS effectively.

This board booted right up without issues upon build. It didn't suffer from a 6 month sit either. Booted right up after some messing with the watercooler without issues.

Haven't had any BSODs. No errors.

Cons: There are only two things that concerned me about this board.

One, the power connector is way at the tippy top of the board. Luckily, I planned on using extensions for my PSU cables so this wasn't an issue for me with those on but when I first installed, I really had to make it work with my PSU's existing cable.

And two, this board reports super high temps in my Corsair Link software but super low temps using the BIOS. I'm not sure why, but it's telling me the one sensor is at over boiling which is impossible because I have stuck my hand in there after shutdown to make sure it isn't right and I'm not frying things. I think this might be located between the GPU and the CPU and I may add a secondary fan somewhere in there to see if it makes any difference. I haven't had any issues and there is definitely nothing at boiling heat in there so I'm assuming the sensor is faulty. Still, scared the heck out of me when I saw it at first.

I know there are utilities from ASUS for fan speed/temps but I want to run them through Link so that's kind of annoying, but not enough to really gripe about as long as the temps aren't REALLY that high.

Other Thoughts: ASUS M5A97 R2.0 with AMD-FX 8320 Vishera, 8GB GSkill Ares 2133, Corsair H80i, 128GB SanDisk SSD, 240 GB Seagate Barracuda, MSI 9800 GTX (upgraded today and waiting for MSI GTX 760 4GB!), and Windows 8.1. Powered by Antec HCG-750M (with BitFenix Alchemy extension cables) in Thermaltake Chaser A31.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I bought this board to put in a new build for my grandson in March for his birthday. Got everything put together, turned computer on, nothing! I didn't have time to return board to get replacement,so took computer to computer shop, and they said it had two bad resistors on it. Needless to say I had to buy a new board from them so that I could have it ready for my grandsons birthday. The new one I bought works great.

Cons: Didn't work

4 out of 5 eggsGood Board

Pros: Price,good and solid quality,optical audio,nice design.

Cons: Bios is ok,but could be better with more options,970 chipset rather than a 990.

Other Thoughts: I wrote this to tell everyone you CAN run an 8350 with this board.i like the board but I do prefer Asrock and MSI to Asus.I have a 8350 clocked to 4.3ghz with the AI suite and memory at 1728 mhz stable. So,I would recommend this board to people.I've done heavy gaming with BF4 and had one top temp of 63C after heavy play.I do wish I would have had enough money for a 990fx.But its solid.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Asus motherboard. Haven't had any problems with this. Fast SATA connections, works out of the box with Linux (Ubuntu 14.04). BIOS is very easy to update, supports the 1055t with 125 watt TDP.

Cons: Northbridge heatsink gets a little toasty, but that is what heatsinks were designed to do. "Only" 6 SATA ports - but if you account one for eSATA, one for an optical drive, that leaves only 4. I had to combine two IDE partitions into a larger SATA drive anyways, so I will be using all 6 SATA ports soon (just need to find more rails for my case). Motherboard does supports multiple GPUs, but from some reading after the fact, it only supports it in CrossfireX configuration, and the secondary only at PCI Express x4. I had two graphics cards I was wanting to use (one CrossfireX compatible, one not) and could not use both. My best guess is that the motherboard recognized one couldn't be used in CrossfireX, and just flat-out disabled the non-capable one. Couldn't even get video out of it while in the BIOS. It works 100% stand-alone, so I know it isn't a bad video card. A modern video card that is wider (i.e., for a heat sink and fan) than a single slot at any point will overlap and make the top-most PCI-Express x1 slot impossible to use unless your device is shorter than the connector itself. Case fan connectors are located near the edge of the board, near the CPU socket and memory slots, and then another by the audio ports. This placement does not allow me to use my front hard drive fan without an extension to it or some other crazy configuration.

Other Thoughts: I know it seems like a lot of cons to this board. However, it was a very reasonable price at time of purchase and for a board that supports Linux natively, has a high CPU TDP (for the AMD 6-core 1055T), at least one full x16 slot, 6 SATA connectors, Gigabit ethernet, the capabilities out-weigh the smaller annoyances about this board.

3 out of 5 eggsdecent mobo

Pros: Awesome bios and features. Good price amd good bang for your buck

Cons: Issues booting up right out of the box. Would hang up on boot, had to reset amd would usually fix the problem. Sometimes would lock up in the middle of browsing internet or watching videos, listenening to music etc. Now locks up on boot and WILL NOT LOAD OR COMPLETE THE BOOTUP PROCESS

Other Thoughts: I'll be requesting a new board. My previous asus mobo NEVER gave me issues, even after 7 years of service my M2AVM works like new.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Brian,

I do apologize that you are currently having issues with your motherboard locking up sir. Have you contacted Newegg in regards to a replacement if possible? Please contact me through email and I would be happy to assist you. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you have tried so far including your reference number within the subject line, as well as the complete parts list you are using and we can discuss this case further as well as setup an RMA with ASUS if needed. Thank you. Cs#N141006982

4 out of 5 eggsAsus needs to improve their QA

Pros: When it works it is a fairly good budget-based board, 970 chipset, UEFI, cool motherboard temps (if heatsinks are glued on tight) and stable. Leverages the speed of a FX6300 quite well. Setting up SSD in bios is quite simple. Updating the bios has never been easier. SATA 6.0 is amazing. DirectKey is nice.

Cons: Not a DIGI+ VRM model but doesn't need to be. Could use an extra chassis fan connector near bottom half of board. Not a full size ATX, but not quite a mATX either (overhangs 6 standoff mounts). No q-connectors supplied. Onboard audio is not X-Fi but sounds ok.

Other Thoughts: Bottom line is that this a good board for the cost, but some of you may be unfortunate enough a come across a bad mobo like I did. You are better off replacing the board than dealing with the frustration of random lockups, overheating, faulty USB ports, and POST code errors. I would still buy from ASUS but next time not such an inexpensive mobo. Decent board for the money though.
