5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good!

Pros: Has all the basics required for a server. Plenty of PCI slots, SATA connections, USB 3.0, 8 memory slots, several fan connections, 2 NIC. Quality seems decent, solid state capacitors. Price is reasonable for a server board. My last ASUS board lasted about 6 years.

Cons: Knock on wood, nothing so far.

Other Thoughts: Built a 2012 R2 server, running 2 VM servers and 1 VM workstation.
Xeon CPU E5-2620
16GB Kingston KVR13E9K2/16I
2 WD VelociRaptor HDD, 2 Seagate NAS HDD

Pros: Hosts a ton of memory at a reasonable price point.

Cons: Finicky physical layout, memory seating in slots requires more vigor than average

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Performer

Pros: I picked this board to replace aging cluster nodes based on ASUS RS161-E5 boards. This board fit perfectly without modification. I now have had 20 of them running for over 8 month in a 1U case fitted with E5-2620 and 64GB ECC memory and a mellanox infiniband card. No problems so far and they pretty much run full duty cycle 24/7.

Cons: Price

1 out of 5 eggsAwful MOB and worse customer service

Pros: Absolutely NONE

Cons: Do not buy this MOB if your life depends on it. I would also recommend strong second thoughts about buying anything from ASUS based on my personal experience with them, and I am not a complainer. I bought this from a different vendor than where I am posting this, but I want to let people know what an awful customer experience I have had with both this MOB and ASUS in general.

I have gotten 4 MOBs (original and 3 RMAs) over 6 months. None of them have worked. I have had the same two problems twice with the MOBs (Q Code of 00 -- won't even post) and twice with Q Code of b7 (bad memory slot). I have benched tested, called customer service and basically gotten no satisfaction other than the fact that they keep giving me RMAs and then sending me MOBs that won't work one way or the other. When I demanded to speak to a manager, he expressed no concern and was not apologetic in any sense. He said he would make sure he sent me a good MOB this 5th time, but they have now had my returned MOB for a week and have not even responded to the two emails I have sent them asking about status.

Other Thoughts: Keep in mind that when you call ASUS for MOB service, it’s on your dime, so basically you have to pay for the pleasure of them putting you on hold and then providing you generally with no satisfaction for your problem.
This is the first time I have ever written a review that was not at least satisfactory. I know I read a lot of reviews where people complain and whine, and based on their complaints, they are completely out of line. I do not do that. If I am complaining, it is because a company has been truly AWFUL and I have to say, from my perspective, ASUS has met the bill on that front.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Jim,

I am very sorry to hear that you have had problems with multiple boards sir. Are you currently in the middle of the RMA process still? Please let me know and I will be happy to assist you with resolving your current RMA. I would also be able to personally provide testing for a replacement prior to sending it out to you as well. So that I may look into your case further, please provide me with your current or latest RMA number. Please include the reference number below within the subject line. In addition, what troubleshooting steps you have tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration? Thank you!

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: I'm a big fan of ASUS. I have a few of their MOBOs and several monitors, they make great stuff but I have no idea what the issue is with the server mobo I received today...

Cons: This is my 4th or 5th PC build, but my first ever server build. I can't for the life of my get this thing to make it through POST/into bios. The LED indicator says "b7" (yes, lowercase "b") which, according to the manual[1] means: NVRAM configuration reset

Now here are my specs:
Proc: Intel Xeon E5-1603 2.6 GHz LGA 2011
RAM: (2) Kingston ValueRAM 16GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1600 Server Memory (Intel Validated ) Model KVR16R11D4/16I

Here is what I have tried already:

Clear the CMOS: I have done this several times, several ways:

Following the steps in the manual:
This jumper allows you to clear the Real Time Clock (RTC) RAM in CMOS. You can clear the CMOS memory of date, time, and system setup parameters by erasing the CMOS RTC RAM data. The onboard button cell battery powers the RAM data in CMOS, which include system setup information such as system passwords.

To erase the RTC RAM:

1. Turn OFF the computer and unplug the power cord.

2. Move the jumper cap from pins 1–2 (default) to pins 2–3. Keep the cap on pins 2–3 for about 5–10 seconds, then move the cap back to pins 1–2.

3. Plug the power cord and turn ON the computer.

Follow method 1 with the mobo battery removed

Follow method 1 while no RAM was in mobo

Follow method 1 while no RAM was in mobo, then remove battery (so just a combo of all three above)

Disconnected HDD/SSD from power and from mobo

Disconnected all fans from mobo

Disconnected monitor from mobo

Used voltage meter to check battery on mobo: 5.6-5.8...uh..volts..or whatever (I'm not an electrician)

No keyboards plugged in

No mouse plugged in

No RAM plugged in (the built-in speaker on the MOBO won't stop beeping when in this condition which is kind of a good sign, right?)

1 of 2 RAM DIMMS plugged in

2 of 2 RAM DIMMS plugged in

Unplugged all panel cables from mobo (HDD led, Reset SW, etc)

Hold power button while system is on, system shuts off, continue to hold power button, unplug system, continue to hold, plug system back in, continue to hold, pray

Literally try anything else I can think of

I have noticed a few things:

The monitor will never detect the system is booting up. I use this monitor on other systems so I know the monitor is good (yes I double and triple check to make sure all connections were secure)

The keyboard plugged in will never light up - So I have a logitech G510 has an LED screen and LED backlight keys, when I have this keyboard plugged in to the back of the mobo no lights or any signs of life are shown on the keyboarding during boot

The laser on the mouse, while plugged in, will never light up

Manufacturer Response:

I am sorry that you are having issues getting your computer to function. To start, what BIOS do you have currently installed? Also, was there any bent CPU pins on the motherboard? At your earliest convenience, please contact me through email, including the requested information, and we can discuss this case further. I can be reached by the below email address.

Thank you,

5 out of 5 eggsRevised Review

Pros: Features and price.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: My prior review said the memory slots were bad. Turns out the problem was the CPU. After installing a new CPU (same kind as the first, just a new one) it worked perfectly with all four sticks of RAM installed.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Memmory Slots

Pros: Works great with 1 stick of RAM.

Cons: Will not boot with more than one stick of RAM. I tried another set of RAM, same problem. The first two sets of RAM meet the motherboard specs, but were not on ASUS's QVL list. I got a third set of RAM, which was on the QVL list, but still have the same problem. I have built many computers and servers and am very familiar with installing RAM. I highly doubt the problem was with my installation of the RAM.

Other Thoughts: I have ordered another Z9PA-U8 board, hopefully the new one will work.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your review.

What processor did you have installed? When you have the chance, please contact me through email regarding this case. I look forward to your reply. 3572888.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Hyper-V Server Board

Pros: I have Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Datacenter running on this server board with Microsoft’s Hyper-V supporting 25 virtual machines and 128 Gig of RAM installed. It runs fast and has been in production for over 2 months now with no problems. I also have 2 LSI Raid controllers connected as well. One with 8 Kingston SSD drives in a Raid 6 and another with 8 Seagate 3 TB drives also in a Raid 6 configuration. The optional iKVM works great as well.

Cons: Only wish Newegg carried the ASMB6-iKVM module themselves. I had to order it from another supplier instead.

1 out of 5 eggsNot great, bad QA

Pros: Cheap, holds lots of ram.

Cons: One board had the ram slots fail within 30 days of first use, the second (a different build) came with a bad ram slot out of the box.

When they do work they boot VERY slowly. This has been true of every Asus server board I've ever owned.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these boards in the past month and a half. The first worked initially and I was happy enough with it.

The day after I ordered a second one of these boards the first one started locking up. After the third restart it stopped booting unless I pulled all but 1 stick of the ram from it. I RMA'd it and started to build my second system. The second board has the same problem. With 1 stick of ram everything is great. As soon as I populate the second slot it will not boot. I have 15 other identical sticks of ram, so I find it highly unlikely that this is a bad piece of ram.

I will definitely return the second board for credit, not a replacement, as at this point I'm pretty convinced this line of boards has a quality control issue. My first RMA should be replaced in the next week and I will have to keep my fingers crossed.
