4 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect

Pros: Currently this is the only micro ATX board in its class. With 4 memory slots and USB 3 available plus ASUS quality it was the only choice for my high performance low power build. I coupled this with a AMD 6300, Nvidia 750 and PC 1600 memory. You can't beat the performance for the price.

Cons: I had to RMA the first board because the audio would not work. From ASUS that was a big disappointment. There are two USB 3 ports coming out the back. No USB 3 header on the board so a front panel USB 3 / card reader module will not work. I had to usse a USB 2 version.

Other Thoughts: I wish ASUS and other manufacturers would give up on providing parallel port and serial port headers on these boards. The space saved could be better used for things one really needs like a USB 3 header. They could build an external USB module that converts to parallel / serial.

4 out of 5 eggsBudget solution, check

Pros: Price
- Unfortunately I installed Windows 8.1 on the system, a fully custom build. But, perhaps as a consolation, all drivers automatically installed upon OS installation! I thought that was fairly nifty. The CD that came with it was only for Windows 7 and I didn't need to use it.
Plenty of video output options
Lots of RAM slots
3 USB2 headers on PCB

Cons: I assumed this board would have my minimums, but didn't realize or care when I selected it that it had
-Only two fan headers (CPU and chassis)
-No USB3 header on the PCB.
-Not many USB ports on the back of the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: Got this board for my wife's build, because I have no plans on overclocking. To complete this build, I bought a 4 port USB 2 array that fits into an expansion slot of my case, and a splitter for the 3 pin chassis header so that I could power both chassis fans. Essentially, this added $12 to the cost of the system so that it would meet my minimum requirements. Even so, if you have a case that has USB 3 ports on the front, and you want them to function as such, this mobo would not be a good choice. It does have an adapter so that you can use them as blue USB 2 ports.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks, but caught fire!

Pros: Board works decently

Cons: Only seems to work for a while, then totally catches fire

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these boards to completely rebuild my wife and my own computers several months ago. Both boards worked extremely well for 5 months, but without warning one of the boards sparked and started to burn. I was able to contain the damage and prevent it from spreading to other components, but I now worry that the other board may be a ticking time-bomb (as both PCs were build with the same components).

Other reviewers mention problems with the voltage regulators and I suspect it may be partially responsible for the failure, as I was running a 125 watt CPU (with no overclocking). With that in mind, I would advise other shoppers to at least look elsewhere and pay attention to the negative reviews on this product when making purchases.

Manufacturer Response:

I am sorry that your ASUS purchase has not been what you expected. When you have time, please contact me through email regarding this case. Within the email, please include the serial number of the motherboard. 3590785.

1 out of 5 eggsAsus is giving false wattage specs for this board!

Pros: In all aspects this board is all you need for a basic PC, internet, HTPC, playing older games etc.

Cons: The voltage regulators DO NOT have heat sinks! They will get very hot if you are using a high wattage cpu. Be warned.

Other Thoughts: I had two of these boards die within 12 hours of each other! The big problem with this board is that Asus' web site states that this board will support up to a 140 watt cpu but all forums are stating that it only supports up to a 95 watt cpu. I installed a AMD FX8320 8 core put in them and they barely lasted for 45 days. I added heat sinks to the voltage regulators and also had a big fan blowing on both of them to help. They both died.

I have never returned anything to Newegg because I never had to. LOVE their service but will see how good it really is. It has been over 30 days so we will see how good they really treat their customers. Will update this post when I find out.

Be warned if you are planning on using a high wattage cpt.

Manufacturer Response:

I am sorry that you are having issues with the motherboard. As per our compatibility list, the M5A78L-M/USB3 does, infact, support the FX-8350(FD8350FRW8KHK,4.0GHz,8C,125W,rev.C0,AM3+). By chance, were you overclocking the system? This could have caused the problems described. When you have the time, please contact me through email about this case, including the requested information. 3583192.

For your reference, please see our CPU compatibility guide here:

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: good package in small size

Cons: I'm very disappointed in Asus quality control. The network card does not work. It is not a huge problem because I needed it only for initial setup but still.

Manufacturer Response:

I am sorry that you are having issues with the motherboard. When you have time, please contact me through email, and we can discuss this case further. Thank you, and have a great day. 3573829.

5 out of 5 eggseverything u need on a small board

Pros: 4 ram slots. very important for future-proofing micro atx builds. yes, some people build high end micro setups....
has fiber optic sound out for HTPC setup
quality, fit and finish you expect from asus

Cons: isn't set up for dual gpus. but c'mon... thats honestly asking too much from a micro build that usually ends up in a micro case

Other Thoughts: never ever ever ever had a DOA problem w/ asus boards, and that is over 10 builds in the past 4 years. I cannot say the same for foxconn (you think you're saving... but its just a waste of money to NOT buy asus)

5 out of 5 eggsbought four of these 5 eggs

Pros: Many options in bios...OC and Core unlock is the best for this price.

Cons: no x6 sata ... only thing I hate about this board.

Other Thoughts: Now that I got this board one day delivery. I am very pleased that it allows most of the xfx double D cards from the 6x to 7x series to fit... VERY HARD TO FIND IN A uATX NOW DAYS...

sound is decent but a good sound card is preferred....

THE unlock ability is awesome.. Unlocked two 511 phenoms ( that supposed to not be unlockable) ... seems HP is lying about their phenom II. We all know that most Phenom II 511 are just athon II overclocked but HP got some cpu's that the 4 core phenons OEM etc ... I unlocked only one out of four but that's pretty good with this board...

This board is an epic beginner gamers board by the way...

no x6 sata but even if you put some SSD in you will love it. The extras are nice.

Overall Epic beginners gaming board. If you put some money into a good video card and 6G ram..

by the way gamers you don't ever use over 6g ram... unless you are doing autocat or some intensive graphic design over 6gb ram will not help your gaming.

bus speed and your GPU matters.

overall this is one of the best beginner motherboards that will open cores and does an excellent job at l1 l2 cache...

unlocks cores for some rare cpu's..

worth the price.... WORTH THE PRICE..... FOR a budgect gamer...

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Motherboard, minus the ethernet.

Pros: Durable
4 RAM Slots

Cons: Ethernet port did not work. I ordered $15 in networking supplies, just to figure out my port did not work!

Other Thoughts: Just an update to my last review...
