1 out of 5 eggsASUS P9X79-E WS LGA 2011 Intel X79

Pros: This $500.00 ASUS P9X79-E WS LGA 2011 performed perfectly for approximately 2-1/2 years until the disc controller failed.
Note: this motherboard has a 3 year warranty of which 6 months still remaining.

Cons: Problem: As with a motherboard that failed several years ago, Asus appears to refuse to honor the warranty.

I had this motherboard ASUS P9X79-E WS LGA 2011 for a little over 2-1/2 years and it performed excellently before the disc controller failed. The ASUS P9X79-E WS LGA 2011 has a 3 year warranty it is considered a server motherboard.
When I contacted Asus tech-support and explained the problem I was having with the motherboard. I was told that 5 RMA emails had been sent to me. While the tech-support person was on the phone I login to my IP service provider's website under my account and as I expected not one of the so call RMA emails were found. Of course I verified that Asus had my correct email address, the tech- support person just repeatedly lie. Next I was given a link to request a RMA on line. But the $500.00 ASUS P9X79-E WS motherboard is not listed in the drop down menu, therefore there is no way to request an RMA online. This is not the first time I Asus pull this trick, Several years ago I sent in a motherboard (RMA) that failed, I received an email with pictures falsely claiming water damage. I was able to speak to a manager asking him to personally look at the motherboard and the area circled in the pictures that were sent to me. I stated that the claimed water damage was fingerprints. The Asus manger agreed and I was sent a replacement motherboard. Asus may wakeup and realize that customer service is more important that just getting people to buy their motherboards. Because those of us that can afford to spend $500.00 or more are the people that Asus such what to keep on their side because we are most likely engineers, managers, and the like. It appears Asus is being penny wise and dollar foolish.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review from 1 to 4 stars

Pros: This board arrived with a BIOS revision from February 2014. It's now late 2015. C'mon guys, ship boards with the most recent BIOS - PLEASE!

The old BIOS apparently has no support whatsoever for my GTX 960 (my guess is it simply doesn't recognize any PCIE 3.0 video card - but I'm sure about my 960). So after turning on the machine I had no video with which to install Windows or even edit the BIOS settings.

Replacing the video card with an old PCIE 2.0 version allowed Windows to be loaded, but with some problems. After flashing the BIOS I reinstalled windows using the GTX 960 without issues. All 64GB of RAM are recognized. The system seems stable. Flashing the BIOS was painless and easy once deciding which method to use.

I normally flash the BIOS first thing on a new board. Usually because it's a new design that was shipped before the BIOS was fully mature. However, I've never had a video card outright refuse to work at all because the BIOS was outdated. I guess I'd rather see Asus support and continue development of the board with new features than abandon it to an outdated BIOS. There are pros and cons either way.

Assuming the board remains stable, it looks well built and it's performing as advertised so I'm quite happy. BTW I use this for video editing with three GTX 960 cards all running at x16. It's a great platform if you need lots of full speed PCIE slots. It close to 5 stars but the headache with the video and 2 year old BIOS drop it to 4.

Cons: This board is packed with a lot of features, but unfortunately the documentation isn't too good. I also don't understand why a board that apparently is still in production ships with an almost 2 year old BOIS that won't recognize a PCIE 3.0 video card. My other concern is the MemOK! button that is questionable, however, the board is running despite the fact the switch feels like it's inoperable.

Other Thoughts: 64GB G Skill DDR 2133 1.6Volt memory installed and stable (yes mine works with 64 Gig for the person that says unstable at more than 48GB). I always try to use the highest voltage memory the CPU and MB can support but not necessarily the fastest. Three GTX960 video cards for the GPU processing power needed - SLI isn't supported by the software - I would install 4 cards but the last one won't fit in the case I'm using (my mistake). A Samsung EVO 800 500GB SSD and an optical BluRay burner complete the system (1300 watt EVGA PS).

1 out of 5 eggsWon't boot :(

Pros: None yet.

Cons: Won't boot. The "MemOK!" button does nothing. The button itself has no tactile feedback - it feels like it has "bottomed out" and could be defective. I've never pushed a button, even a tiny one, that didn't move at all. Even flat membrane switches move. See questions in Comments section.

Other Thoughts: I haven't yet RMAed this board yet since I'm not positive the MemOK! button is defective or that the board is defective. I'm giving it 1 star pending revision to a higher rating if I can get this resolved quickly with Newegg or if it turns out to be operator error. Currently there is a Xeon E5 series CPU installed, the fans all turn, but there is no output from the video card to the monitor. The memory malfunction LED is not lit (which is good), but still the MemOK! memory tuning button does nothing when pushed and feels broken to me. I'm using non-ECC DDR3 2133 by G Skill. All power connectors are in place. The BIOS has not been flashed. A GTX 960 is installed in the 1st pcie slot. A BluRay SATA drive is attached with a Windows disk. I was hoping that the latest BIOS rev would be factory loaded due to the age of the board design. Do I need to flash the BIOS? Should the MemOK! button do SOMETHING? Could I be using the wrong SATA ports - does the optical drive need to go on a 3 G/s port or will it work with a 6 G/s? I've read much of the user guide but no luck yet.

2 out of 5 eggsASUS Poor Customer Service

Pros: 4 way SLI at x16, supports Xeon and ECC.

Cons: Bought this board from Newegg 2 years ago. First board arrived DOA. Newegg replaced without question. Second board worked great for just over two years. One day I turn the machine on, hear a rapid fizz and then a flash of light and smoke from the case. Can see the burnt tracing at the edge of the heat sink on the bottom of the board, on the other side from the power caps. This machine has run a Xeon 2687W with QVL memory since new, never OC'd. RMA to ASUS. ASUS says user caused fault and they want 400 bucks to RMA a MB still under warranty. I have used ASUS boards exclusively since 1995. I will be finding a new supplier for my customers after today. ASUS customer service does not exist any longer. STAY AWAY from this brand.

Other Thoughts: ASUS used to be the go to product, partly because of their great support. With many different manufacturers in the market now making comparable products, it is not longer worth the premium to buy their products with the total lack of customer support after the fact.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for any inconvenience that this motherboard is causing you. We appreciate the feedback you have provided. Do you have a case number during your time with one of our agents? I will make sure to forward this feedback to the management team to avoid the same issues in the future. Which part of the hardware was the smoke coming from? Does your motherboard still operate correctly? Please contact me at if you need any technical assistance or have any general inquiries. You can use this number N151115936 as reference to this case

Thank you for choosing ASUS!

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 4.5 Toruble free years, with fantastic performance thus far, overclocked an i7-3930k to 5Ghz rock solid.

Cons: Some plastic parts not aging well. I am not rough with my hardware, but have found that the plastic is becoming brittle with age. Have broken two clips thus far, one on a RAM slot, and one on a PCIe slot.

Both still work though!, I am keeping a close eye on if components start popping out.

Other Thoughts: I know that traditionally long term reliability (4+ years) has not been a major concern with enthusiast components, as they get swapped out more often anyway, but with the low rate of performance increases in CPU's these days (I have a CPU launched in late 2011, and see no reason to upgrade yet) some things, like how plastic parts age may need to be taken into consideration.

4 out of 5 eggsBaffled

Pros: Works very well with properly suited equipment for what I needed it to do which was render video, game, and surf the web.

Cons: A chip or capacitor next to the ram near dimm d1 lit on fire. Yes folks, it just blew up. I turned it on one day and smelled smoke. When investigating some more (thought it was the power supply) I turned back on my equipment a second time and saw the aforementioned component light on smoke and light on fire.

Other Thoughts: This isn't a complaint, just a warning that these things happen. I give it a four out of five because i own for of the same motherboards and only had this issue with the one after one year.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent open box deals

Pros: Dual server nics, 4-way Sli, Serial port!!

Easy setup for me thanks to other reviewers here. My only caveat is you should reset the bios before you attempt to flash. I have two of these boards and both had successful bios flash doing the reset first. Be sure to scroll down and read the other reviews about the bios file renaming, this is important.

Also, when adding ram I had to remove the OC completely. For some reason it would see the ram but not present it to the system until OC removed. After that OC'ing is fine and ram is good. I mixed in 4x8gb + 3x4gb to test the slots and all were recognized and worked.

Cons: Installing a 2 slot air cooled video card in the last sli slot makes some of your peripherals difficult to plug in. Just keep this in mind and plan accordingly.
The extra power connector for the pci express bus is in a funky location, make sure to plug it in before installing a card in the first slot.

Not all the accessories were included in my New Egg open box which wasn't a deal breaker for me. The sli bridges were all there as well as the rfi shield. I have tons of cables and other extras if I needed them. Just be aware if you get an open box, some of these items may not be there. Also the open box was a plain white box, whereas my other open box's were the original box.

Other Thoughts: I purchased an open box from 'A' that had a bent pin but the replacement was perfect with all accessories setup. In the meantime I ordered a 2nd replacement 'open box' from new egg to increase the chance of getting a good board and didn't open the box, while I setup the 'A' replacement board.

I was going to return the new egg open box until I saw the restock and shipping charge. Instead I opened the box and checked if the board would flash the new bios. When it did, I decided to keep it and ordered a quad core for it.

I pooled my 3 gtx 680 ftw in sli for a speedy single screen gaming machine that does double duty as my main media center recording machine (always on).

Very pleased with the first machine, a hex core 2 way sli setup for multi-boxing MMO's. Extremely pleased with the second machine for single screen gaming (borderlands, skyrim etc) and media center usage.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy negative reviews?

Pros: 1) Intuitive layout
2) Easy setup
3) Dual Intel I210 LAN ports--server grade make and model
4) 32-64 GB of RAM capable--using 32GB DDR3 1200-CL9
5) 7 Expansions/PCIe slots
6) Stable
7) Easy to overclock--even though it's a workstation board
8) Runs cool even when OC'ed

There's so much more, but the ability to Flash the BIOS externally was a life saver on the initial build.

Cons: 1) Marvell caching
2) Only 1 true USB 2.0 header

Other Thoughts: To ensure your PCIe slot is running at 3.0, simply go into the BIOS-->Advanced menu-->System Agent Configuration and select the slot(s) of your video card(s) and select "GEN3"...which is 3.0. Also, my 2nd Generation i7 [3930K] is cable of running PCIe 3.0. I have 2 x GTX680's w/ 4GB in SLI and have had no problems.

1 out of 5 eggsSeriously?

Pros: Connectivity, Company name.

Cons: Had to flash bios twice but one ASUS tech was fantastic and patient on the phone. Still having problems, I later had to carry out two complete re-formats to solve program lock up issues where I finally got some good advice from a friend to check the bios date which defaulted several years in the past (60 hours wasted to install the over 50 programs - twice). False temperature readings? Motherboard goes from +33 C to minus 1 degree C, even once indicated +60!! I have liquid cooling and several Noctua and Corsair fans. Voltage red flags go from +5 to+12 and +12 to +30!! ASUS tech (after I finally reached them again) said it was my $350 Corsair 1200 Watt Power Supply which is not even running at 30 percent and for which its dedicated software and my computers hardware monitor (not the AI suite) says all is good. So... I got a $6,000 work station beast that crashed, freezes and programs lock up or fail to initialize and the supplied DVD manuals (out of date) are next to useless. In my opinion, there is insufficient explanation for what control settings (especially Ai Suite) should be made too. Telling a new car driver in a manual "that is a steering wheel" with gizmos attached is not the same thing as telling him how to turn the steering wheel under different speed and driving conditions. Upon un-boxing, I took lots of pictures and I had fears that this might be a used board from the slight marring on the PCH plate (south bridge).

Maybe I am expecting too much from a flag ship manufacturer? Maybe as a professional electronics technician, instructor and technical writer with 30+ years experience, my standard is too high? I have written many a concise manual in pdf format - one over 700 pages for an entire radar system - and I always provided a fully blown description of every facet for every condition and what to do for various technical circumstances Hmmmm $500 eh? The foundation of my work station and I cannot get authoritative and exact info I needed on it - even as requested with tech support. I wanted to speak with an engineer - I do that allot by the way and I understand they build things but alas cannot explain it often - so you can imagine my frustration when finally getting through the 4'th time and I am speaking with a polite gentlemen in the Philippines who said he would bump my service request up a notch to 2'nd level. Still have not heard or gotten an email regarding that specific issue. I did get a call back though regarding the MOBO registration screw up (my fault) wherein they indicated it really wasn't necessary to register the MOBO after I accidentally deleted the web data input and tried to re-register. ASUS has/had a great reputation for me. Hmmm Gigabyte is looking interesting.

Other Thoughts: Great delivery time - truly impressive New Egg!

Thanks new egg for offering extended replacement plans - think I will be using mine.

Manufacturer Response:

Have you been able to follow-up with the RMA? If not, I would recommend moving forward with the process, as what problems you are describing can be explained by a malfunctioning unit. Should you need any assistance in this matter, please do not hesitate to let me know through email. 3738429

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

Pros: Easy setup and rich with features. If this thing doesn't have it you probably don't need it. The BIOS tools are great and easy to use. I really don't know why the bad reviews...especially for those who had difficulty updating the BIOS. All of the expansion ports, SATA and USB ports are great. Excellent product.

Cons: A little pricey but look at what you get.

Other Thoughts: There are a number of additional diagnostic tools available on the ASUS website. I just wish they had put them on the disc that came with the board.
