3 out of 5 eggsBad CPU Fan + Time Clock Error

Pros: Nice board

Cons: 1. The time and date on the board keep moving to the past randomly, but all the settings on the bios stay correct (raid, boot order, etc.) so that means it's not a battery issue.
2. The Bios stated Bad CPU Fan, but fan works fine, customer get's annoyed every time he turns on/off the computer

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsWas great, until I wanted to make it quiet!

Pros: Lots of Chassis fan headers

Cons: Chassis fan headers are 4 pin, but are not PWM. Some sort of magical witch brew ASUS came up with to control them.

However my main gripe is the dang CPU PWM fan header can only be brought down to 60% minimal power.

I setup my Cooler Master N200 case with 4x Arctic F12 PWM 120mm fans. 2 in the front, 1 in the back, 1 on the CNPS10X Performa CPU Heatsink. The Arctic F12 fans are rated 600-1,350 RPM. With ASUS's AI Suite's Thermal Radar 2 I was able to thankfully get all my case fans to actually shut off when in idle/low use mode like surfing the internet. During GTA 5 they of course come on full blast but I have the sound up so I don't notice the fans much during gaming.

However for the life of me I could NOT control the CPU fan!!! It was whirling away @ 1,350 RPM. I tried BIOS Silent/Manual settings, no help. Finally swapped it out with another fan that spins up to 1900 rpm and thankfully it now idles ~900rpm. It's still not perfect though. If you search you'll find this topic brought up many times.

So my search for a dead silent PC continues. Appears MSI has greater control and can turn down the PWM CPU fan to ~12%.

Not cool ASUS!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASUS Customer Mike M,

Thank you for posting this informative review. I’m sorry that our ASUS Motherboard does not meet your expectations when it comes to fan RPM speeds and overall quietness. At this time I will forward this feedback to the related department for future improvements with the CPU fan controller. Have you tried using a fan splitter in a pin where PWM does function correctly?

If you have any technical questions please feel free to contact me at I would be glad to assist you with any inquires you may have. Your case reference number is N151055331.

Thank you for choosing ASUS!

5 out of 5 eggsSolid.

Pros: Almost a 'reference' design - lacks the bells and whistles of more gamer-oriented boards, but they are called bells and whistles for a reason. Does what a motherboards needs to do, and does it really well. 8-pin CPU power, multi-phase VRM, LED indicators to show POST progress as well as indicate any faulty hardware, This board has features that don't make it to more expensive gaming boards.

An absurd amount of Fan headers. Even larger ATX boards don't have as many Headers as this one. You'll struggle to find a use for all of them.

Runs Devil's Canyon CPU's off the bat on BIOS version 1707 which is what it ships with, but since DC has new microcode I strongly recommend updating the BIOS to the latest version - Which, by the way is shockingly easy.

the z97 version of this is about $160, while I got this for $100 before a $30 MIR. As it runs Devil's Canyon, and I was not going to run M.2 drives, instead opting for the more stable and mature SATA3 approach with dual Intel 730 SSD's in RAID0, the Value proposition was just too good to pass up. I didn't see the point in waiting for Skylake or investing in PCI-E 3.0 NVMe drives at their current price point, when the RAID0 solution with Intel's 730 drives has been demonstrated to have excellent performance by many reviewers, hitting 1000 mb/s read speed in testing.

Testing and installing over the next few days, will report back with more info if it comes up.

Intel 730 series 240gb x2
WD Black 2tb x2
Fractal Design 140mm x1, Fractal design 120mm x2

Cons: ASUS, stop with the excess branding- we don't need to see 'TUF' 'DIGI+ VRM' or any such stuff printed on the motherboard.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality board and great features.

Pros: The board looks amazing and I haven't had a problem with anything in awkward places or angles. The BIOS is nicely designed and easy to use. The thermal armor kit is also available to purchase which makes it look even better aesthetically.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Installation of some fans may cause a problem in the startup because of fans running lower than 600RPM. This causes a "CPU FAN error" and the way to fix this is to disable or lower the default minimum limit of CPU Fans in the BIOS settings (Default minimum is at 600RPM). As long as you know the fans are running this will not be a problem but it will cause confusion for a beginner.

3 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: Everything I have connected has worked so far. Its a good motherboard.

Cons: Top 3.0 slot didn't work the first time I used it, but when I tried after setting everything up(was using the second 3.0 slot for this) it worked. I chalk that up to the GPU not being put in right, but I'm watching the motherboard in case it stops working.

Other Thoughts: The top PCI 3.0 slot initially didn't work with my graphics card. I had to move the card down to the second 3.0 slot. After setting everything up I almost took it all apart and rma'd this board back because of that. Luckily I tried it out again and it worked. I'm guessing I just put the graphics card in wrong the first time. If it stops working I'm definitely sending this board back or getting another entirely.

2 out of 5 eggsBuy at your own risk!

Pros: Since I've had to RMA 2 boards, all I can say is that it looks nice, and it feels like it was well built (see Cons/other). They have a good marketing team which convinced me to go for this board and build my new pc.

Cons: I purchased this board on February, 2015. The board's audio did not work; I tested different speakers and headphones, updated drivers, uninstalled and re-installed audio drivers, but still no luck to get sound. Had to RMA thinking that these sorts of things happen. Asus couldn't (or didn't want to) repair the board so they sent me a brand new one. I was without a computer for 2 weeks during this process. Unfortunately, the new z87 Gryphon was not any better as it was Dead On Arrival (DOA). The motherboard wouldn't even go to the BIOS when pressing the "on" button or "Direct Key" (onboard on button).

2 dysfunctional boards made me suspicious about this board and made me lose my trust in the company. If you will purchase this board, I hope it works for you and that you don't have to be without a computer for a month (RMA time). I however, cannot recommend this board or brand.

Other Thoughts: The previous computer I built was an MSI and I had no problems building the PC; I hope the third Asus board (which is in the mail) works so I can get to work.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price after Rebate. The board shipped with the 1707 bios and I was able to enter and flash the bios with the I5-4690K. Multiple on-board fan headers is a big plus for a uATX board.

Cons: Not a Z97.

Other Thoughts: I bought an ASUS Z97-A board and 4960K and was looking to build another system with the same CPU. I saw the Z87 Gryphon for a decent price and found out it supported the Haswell refresh cpus. I didn't know if it would boot, but was happy to know it has the USB Bios Flashback which does not require the CPU to be attached to do an update. I am impressed with the overall build quality and color scheme.
