4 out of 5 eggsExcellent middle-of-the-road board

Pros: Nice color scheme
plenty of features
ASUS, great quality as always
Efficient layout, especially 90* SATA ports!
Hardware BIOS flashback, I haven't tested it but it's a nice feature to have at my disposal

Cons: The additional features of this board are a little gimmicky (remote control, the AI suite, etc).

Other Thoughts: People that are looking at this board most likely want something that is quality, feature packed, and no going to break the bank. ASUS did exactly that with this motherboard.

4 out of 5 eggsUPDATING BIOS to ver 2004

Pros: Good and reliable.

Cons: Asus help can be a little slow

Other Thoughts: I was having a problem with my computer and after a process of elimination I determined that the problem may have been caused when I flashed the BIOS with ver 1802 by using the ASUS EZ FLASH 2 utility. After several e-mail with Asus help, we decided to flash the BIOS with the most current version, 2004.

When this latest BIOS is downloaded, it comes with a utility program to flash the BIOS that is now a requirement. To make things short, I continued to get the message “BIOS file not correct”. I again e-mailed Asus help and was told to rename the .CAP file Z87P.CAP I never found these instructions on the Asus website so I am placing them here for others to follow. (I have asked Asus to post instructions on their website in the BIOS download section.)

To do this, the following steps must be followed.

Close all open programs.

First, download the 2004 BIOS file and SAVE it. Once saved, select this folder named Z87-PLUS-ASUS-2004-and-BIOS_updater.zip and right click and select EXPAND ALL. After the file is unzipped, find the .CAP file and rename it Z87P.CAP. (select the file and then right click and select rename) Open up the bios installer program that was just expanded and launch it with by double clicking on the file named Update.exe (This file is several layers down so you will have to open several folders until you find it.) It will ask if you want to expand all files and select yes. Now open the folder(s) until you find the Update.exe file (again) and launch it. A new window opens and may be hidden by what is on the screen so select the taskbar at the bottom of the screen to get to this update window. Browse to find the Z87P.CAP file and select. (You may have to browse several layers to find this specific file as the original named file will also appear.)

The flashing process will take about 5 minutes and will require several confirmations of processes so stay at the computer. At the end it will ask if you want to reboot the computer and select yes. On boot-up the screen will stall and a message in the lower left corner will say to press F2 to enter setup. Do so and then in the upper right corner select Exit and Advanced Mode and with the next screen select Exit and then save all changes and EXIT. A message will say no changes have been made, still select Save and EXIT. The computer should now reboot with the new BIOS.

I realize that there several steps involved here so I suggest you print these instructions before attempting to flash your BIOS.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Southbridge

Pros: NONE

Cons: This is a follow up to my initial review.
The board has become unstable in that none of the on board USB ports seem to function correctly, including the USB 2.0 ports which connect to the mouse and keyboard.

ASUS response of updating the drivers is what may have caused this issue in the first place.

Other Thoughts: Support is running me through a number of hoops --- a multi-page contract requiring 5 signatures when there are only 4 places to sign has prolonged this fiasco long enough.

ASUS - Step up to the plate and provide true customer service as a leader in the industry should.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great connectors. Great board options included in the board. Installation was easy into my new build PC. The board map for the build made it easy to make all of the connections I needed and the auto tuning in the bios worked flawlessly.

Cons: After updating the bios with the new version (needed to install my OS first to get internet connectivity) I now get a bluescreen when loading windows after running the auto tuner. As long as I re-enter the bios and set everything back to default then Windows will load normally. I am hoping that this will be resolved with a new bios revision (this one is only 15 days or so old). For now it works without auto tuning and overclocking my PC. Not much to go from on the web to troubleshoot as the is very new.

1 out of 5 eggswaste of money

Pros: I think most asus stuff is a good brand.

Cons: I tryed every thing but my computer just one day stopped loading past the asus screan and the red light for the CPU was on. So I figured after trying for hours to fix it my CPU was finished. So I bought a brand new i7 4790 4th gen for my desk top. When it got here I tryed it out.... It still didn't work so I took it out and tryed my old one then it works now..... Stupidest thing ever. What makes it worse my new intell chip dosent even work on this board. -_-

1 out of 5 eggsSouthbridge Bad

Pros: Looks great and says it can do a lot. Love the BIOS Graphics in Win but that's where it ends

Cons: In the process of building this out, I ran the Asus available updates. When the ASMedia bios ran, all the USB 3.0 ports (it only has 3.0 ports) failed to recognize any legacy devices which include the mouse and keyboard.
Strangely though, it worked sometime in BIOS which meant the BIOS to Win communications was flawed.
After speaking to customer support, it appears that the Southbridge seems to be bad. This is the only common component sense the back ports are ASMedia driven and the 20 pin riser to the front ports are Intel driven.

If you decide to use this board, purchase and install the USE port card which plugs into the USB 2.0 dedicate connectors on the mother board. Because if you rely upon the 3.0 ports working and don't have a PS2 Keyboard and mouse WITH a PS2 Splitter, you will not have access to the system.

Other Thoughts: I have used Intel boards for more than a decade and needed to rebuild a crashed machine over the holiday weekend. So I purchase the ASUS board from a local retailer (sorry Newegg, I needed it fast). I chose ASUS because of its reputation for solid boards but find myself asking was it worth it... Now this may be just with this model, but I found reports on Newegg and other sources that have indicated ASUS may have or is loosing its edge on quality.... I hope not.

The fix for this issue, is to use a Legacy USB 2.0 external port plate to provide reasonable access. Since the compatibility with the previously strict protection of the Keyboard and mouse ports has shifted.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings DanW,

Thank you for purchasing an ASUS product.

As long as you install the latest BIOS and drivers for the motherboard, the problem with the USB ports should be resolved. If the problems persist, please let me know through email. For easier downloading of the BIOS and drivers, I have included the support website here: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Z87PLUS/HelpDesk_Download/. 3730279.

Regards,

Mark

4 out of 5 eggsWorked in Linux - but docs need work

Pros: Everything worked in Linux. Using the "BIOS Flashback" feature I was able to update the BIOS with just the board, a power supply and a USB stick. No CPU or RAM required.

Cons: Docs do not appear to mention what to name the file you put on the USB stick and it has to have a very specific name (Z87PL.CAP is what it needs to be called for this board, it's specific to this model). Instead of telling me the name I had to juggle a silly windows program on another machine just to have it rename the file so I could see what the name needed to be. NOT useful!

Also see the note below about the Thunderbolt add-on card (didn't matter enough to me to count as a con but may for others).

Other Thoughts: This board supports the Thunderbolt 2 add-on card but will only give Thunderbolt 1 speeds (10gb/s) rather than full Thunderbolt 2 speeds according to the Asus docs. This didn't matter to me too much as Thunderbolt is kind of buggy on Linux currently but it was a bit of a surprise and may be to others as well.

5 out of 5 eggsPlays nice with Ubuntu 14.04

Pros: Works great with Ubuntu Linux 14.04 and 13.10. The motherboard seems pretty solid, and the power button on it is pretty convenient.

Cons: I tried overclocking it just for my own entertainment and for some reason Ubuntu kept reverting my CPU to stock speeds. I also tried under-clocking it and oddly enough that seemed to work fine. I'm pretty sure it was Ubuntu's fault as Memtest 86 recognized the overclock.

Intel's integrated graphics driver in Linux has a bug in it that makes black's show up as grey on certain HDMI monitors, but the internet has plenty of instruction on fixing that issue.

This motherboard is missing a couple of the standard ATX mounting posts. It's not that big of a deal, but I'd prefer if my motherboard would not flex when I'm hooking it up to the power supply.

My old videocard would not mount in any of the PCIEx16 slots except the bottom one because the heatsink was so fat would brush up against the PCI slot next to it. I don't think any of the new cards on the market use this type of heatsink anymore, but it's an issue to be aware of for anyone with a videocard whose cooler drops down below where the top of the pins are. It did fit in the bottom slot, but only after I disconnected my case audio outputs.

Other Thoughts: I didn't test surround sound, USB3.0(but I have used those ports for USB 2.0 devices), or the black SATA ports.
