2 out of 5 eggsCannot RMA

Pros: Worked great for what I was doing. Never ran into any issues until recently (see cons)

Cons: The customer service experience with Asus has been horrible for me so far. It died on me without warning one day. And when I try to do a RMA it will not take my serial at all so I can't even try and get it replaced under warranty without the SN. I tried directly contacting Asus several times through phone and the line is either always busy or doesn't exist anymore for their components department.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Board!

Pros: I've had this board for over a year now and I've had no problems that anyone has stated. My board came in undamaged, I installed everything myself, this being my FIRST build ever. Everything went nice and smooth. Asus had a nice manual that explained a lot of things to me that I didn't understand and their support has been phenomenal. I have bugged them several times on their forums and through support and they have always replied in a timely fashion. This board performs amazingly in all fashions. I have had no problems overclocking my i7 4770k, nor have I had even a burp in getting my 2400 MHz ram to post right out of the box. XMP profiles work like a breeze. The new BIOS was very confusing at first but after a little exploring I found everything I needed. Asus Suite III has served me well once I got it all straightened out. (See Cons). Right out of the box, never overclocking a day in my life I had my i7 cruising smoothly at 4.3 GHz, which is great considering most struggle beyond 4.1 from what I've read. I gained 16% in performance from overclocking by clicking 1 button in the Suite. Can't beat that with a stick!

Cons: The only real con that I have with this board is the disk that came with it. I got this board shortly after z87 hit the shelves and I had to update everything that I installed. Normally this isn't a big deal but Asus Suite III is a nightmare unless you happen to find the right forum posts. They have an Asus Suite Cleaner that you can download to remove Asus Suite completely and cleanly, and you should before every update. Once I figured all this out, after hours of forum search on the ROG forums, Asus Suite III became a definite PRO. I wish it had bought a slightly higher end board for more fan ports and SATA ports. I filled this board a lot faster than I had planned originally.

Other Thoughts: Asus has served me well once again. I've turned a lot of my friends to Asus fanboys and not one has given me a reason to second guess that. I really appreciate the wonderful products. BTW, I love my new GTX 970 Strix Edition that my GF bought me. Keep on keepin' on! Thanks again guys!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, almost

Pros: Cheap (Newer version released shortly after I bought this one)
Reliable
Plenty of ports
Smooth BIOS

Cons: One fan header is "dead." The fan runs full speed all of the time because the Board does not detect it on the BIOS.

Pain to install due to I/O plate. The plate has little metal tabs that push into the board making it difficult to align the board properly and also making the outside look bad.

Other Thoughts: Cons are minor when considering the actual logical aspects of the board. If you are looking for a cheap motherboard, this is the way to go. However, the Z97 series is out now as a newer version.

1 out of 5 eggsJust don't even bother.

Pros: Well, I guess it looks like a motherboard.

Cons: Here's the rundown: I decided that, after months of deliberation, I would finally build my first computer. I came to Newegg for everything;

Intel i5 4590
Corsair CX500M psu
Team Elite 8GB DDR3
EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti gpu
ASUS Z87-A mobo

I was so excited to finally try this out. While everything was shipping I watched at least four separate videos on building and was fairly confident in my ability to snap this stuff together. When everything finally arrived it was like freakin christmas.

Fast forward to now. It's going on 7 WEEKS and the build still hasn't seen its first POST thanks to this board. I've been troubleshooting so much I've got the procedures memorized. I've been through two processors, two sets of RAM and even sent the board back to ASUS an the problem HAS NOT CHANGED ONCE. The best part is that Newegg won't even trade the board. the "best" they can do is send some stupid little email to ASUS on my behalf to see if they will do anything else. (this email, according to them, would have the same visibility as if I sent it myself)

All I can say is avoid this board because the chance of failure is too high to justify the price (especially when you factor in paying for multiple trips back to the manufacturer).

2 out of 5 eggsNot getting another one

Pros: Decently priced for a Asus board, nothing fancy but not lacking either. Had plenty of USB 3.0 for me, as well as a good variety of display source options. Supported a good amount of fans as well. Overall well built and sturdy. Were it not for the problems I had, I would have no problem purchasing another one since I dont need all the fancy bells and whistles the pro and up offer.

Cons: Easy one is color. Sure black and red is everywhere, but I didnt care for the black/gold/yellow theme here. The main issue with the board that presented itself was the random failure to post, showing random sources for the problems. By that I mean, it would fail to post, and the CPU led light on the board would come on. It worried me, as it first happened about 3 months into the build. I checked the cpu for positioning, and then the socket for bent pins. To this day, I have checked them each time this problem comes up, and everything is fine. Then it decides after a power-down, that nothing is wrong, and posts just fine. Ok then. Then it would do the same, but this time shine the DRAM led. Like the last time, i took to the net to see what other people that had this board were experiencing. Same exact problems for no apparent reason. Only a few found the issue, which was either faulty cpu (not in my case), bend pins (again, not applying to me), or if the DRAM led came up, the DIMM slots could somehow be damaged, or the ram itself. I checked my ram slots, nothing there. Checked the ram itself, again, nothing wrong (verified with a second pc I had built). So after I put everything back to how it was while it DID work, it decides once again, nothing is wrong. Fast forward a few months, this time both leds are on, alternating. Clear cmos, hit the memok! button, and anything else I saw online that should remedy the problem, to no avail. I have checked everything connected to the motherboard on a second build, and only the motherboard fails. If you google Asus Z87-A, you can find MANY posts about similar problems, without finding a solution.

1 out of 5 eggspurchase at your own risk

Pros: GUI BIOS interface

Cons: Board purchased in February 2014.

The first board purchased kept blue screening in the middle of Windows install. Returned it the following day and received a new one from the store. The moment I completed installing all the components and pressed the 'On' button, nothing appeared on screen and no beep was heard. I pressed the reset button and nothing happened. I then flipped off the power supply, flipped it back on and attempted once more; it booted with an OC failure message. It was strange as I never OC'd anything to begin with let alone it was a fresh install. At this point I should've known to return the board and try a different brand but my friend swore by ASUS to be awesome boards so I overlooked this message and continued with Windows install.

After about a week, the same boot fail and OC error message kept appearing. Going into sleep mode was not possible with the system as it would not wake up at all. The boot process was a pain with an 80% chance the system would not boot and I would have to flip off/on the power supply in order to get the system to boot “properly”. This was a nuisance to do on a DAILY BASIS.

Contacted ASUS support, followed their suggestions (clear CMOS, update BIOS and drivers) nothing worked so the board was RMA'd, inspected and assured the issue was resolved. Received the board and less than a week the symptoms returned. Once again, I contacted support and this time they did an advanced RMA. (sending me a replacement board first, then sending out the faulty board) At this point I was sure the problem would be resolved but sadly it did not. Only difference now is I can use sleep mode. The boot reliability is 50% chance of successful boot without the OC error message from both sleep mode and POST boot.

At this point (Oct. 25, 2014) I've dealt with three boards, two RMA's and going on the third RMA now. But this was not the tipping point. Last month, a new BIOS update was released (VER. 2103) and I've done several of them hoping it would resolve my OC error message but instead it made things worse. After installing BIOS update 2103, for the first time the DRAM LED light came on. At first I though I had finally concrete evidence the two sticks of RAM (Corsair) were the issue. I removed one stick and it booted properly. Before assuming I had bad RAM or RAM slots I tried the other stick by itself, it booted up. I then placed both sticks on the other dual channel slots, DRAM light came on. I then proceeded to purchase Patriot RAM. I installed both sticks and to my surprise, the DRAM light still came on. After repeating the single RAM troubleshooting steps I did earlier, it turns out the mobo ONLY allows me to use one stick of DDR3 4GB RAM. In other words, the ASUS BIOS update did more harm than good.

Continuing on, "Other thoughts" section below if you're still reading. Yeah, I've hit my text cap on this section.

Other Thoughts: The last time I spoke with support and mentioned these issues the following troubleshooting steps were suggested; use a mechanical drive and install Windows and see if OC issue is resolved. Explanation for this was that there could be a driver that did not install properly the first time. As for resolving the RAM issue, flash bios to older version. Needless to say, both steps did not work to resolve any issues.

Now I've asked for either an upgraded board or a refund as their product has failed me miserably. I wanted to escalate the issue higher and was given a link to where it "would" be sent to a higher authority, but I just got the run around. No upgrade or refund from them. Best they could offer was another advanced RMA.

After reading other reviews on ASUS Z87 boards, seems like I'm not the only one with the OC failure issue. Sending this board back in and purchasing another brand.

I'm personally done with ASUS and if others ask me about it, I'll suggest them, but with a warning.

4 out of 5 eggsASUS again

Pros: Affordable solution
Expandability
Made by ASUS

Cons: Too many really similar models
Color pattern is weird to me

Other Thoughts: My ASUS P5N-D finally died after years of abuse (CGI rendering, and gaming). Always had a great experience from ASUS, so when the time came, I got another.

The BIOS is a massive upgrade from the DOS interface from the 775 boards, and the manual is very inclusive. Like I said in the cons though, the Z87 comes in 5 or 6 very similar, and none quiet perfect varieties. But to be fair, I don't think the Z87 is the best chipset due to its limited lanes (40), and the inclusion of experimental ports nobody will remember in 3 years. Not ASUS's fault.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 10 months

Pros: The board worked fine until it died with no warning. I got it on a Black Friday deal and it was a good price.

Cons: Despite the bad reviews, I purchased this board last year on Black Friday. It worked really well until approximately 10 months later when it no longer would power on.

I tried changing the power supply, the power switch, and the wiring to no avail. Popped in a new motherboard and my computer started right up. I've owned computers since 1992 and never had a motherboard die this quickly.

I'm about to enter the RMA process so we will see how smoothly that goes.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Randy,

I am sorry to hear about the issues you ran into with the board. I will be happy to assist you with your current RMA if you have any issues during the process. When contacting me, so that I may look into your case further, please provide me with your RMA number that you receive. Please include your reference number as well within the subject line. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you had tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you!Cs#
