4 out of 5 eggsCheap and Cheerful

Pros: The price is the most obvious benefit to buying this board. I took the money I saved from this purchase and put it towards getting a better gpu when i was acquiring my parts. Another good feature of this board that I don't see enough people highlighting is its stability. I run a 4770k overlocked to 4.5 ghz 24/7, and at times I've gotten it up to 4.7 ghz for extended periods. The board handles it all well, with an easy to use uefi bios making tuning overclocking settings no problem. I get no weird crashes or reboot problems, and installation was a breeze. The board also has a nice solid pcb that is not bendy and flimsy like some other budget boards.

Cons: This is a no-frills board. You get good but not great onboard sound, a fairly stock lan controller that has no enhancements, Crossfire only support with no SLI, less usb ports than some more expensive drives, and the list goes on. Fortunately, a lot of that stuff you just don't need depending upon your plans for usage.

Other Thoughts: You might want to ask yourself if you really need Haswell before you get this board. Most people found this to be a fairly lackluster cpu release, and Intel probably has something better in store in the coming 1-2 years. However, if you do want to get a Haswell cpu and you want a cheap, solid motherboard to allow you to maximize the cash you can put into other cards, this is a great choice.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Budget Z87 Board

Pros: Great entry-level Z87 board, has the usual Asus build quality and ease of use I've come to expect. I can't say how it overclocks since it's running an i3-4130 at the moment, but all the settings are there, in great detail. Feels very stable and quick, even using a cheap SSD and on board graphics. Even the AI Suite III is working perfectly, a small miracle in itself (AI Suite II on my Z77 board was buggy and hard to uninstall).

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Wanted Z87 board for upgrade path, but for a budget system, and this board was a perfect fit.

4 out of 5 eggsWhat else do you want for the price?

Pros: I am reviewing an Asus Intel based Motherboard. Asus also makes a whole lot of stuff including but not limited to premade pc’s router, motherboards, laptops, graphics cards, monitors. In fact I own an Asus RT-AC66U awesome router WITH firmware updates. Anyhow this motherboard is in the aftermarket pc building category or DIY type genre of products and is an entry level motherboard hence some of the cons but again its entry level so they almost have to be expected although it could be a really good board if it added features and kept the price.

The features it provides including but not limited the onboard HDMI, DVI, *VGA (*PS/2) PCI 3.0 slot 4 dim slots, 19 pin USB 3.0 header expansion slot. All these features are great to have especially the video output because the CPUs supported by the chipset on the board have intel HD graphics so if you choose to go with that instead of pumping money into a dedicated graphics card, you save more money.

Yes people should in-fact look to purchase this item if they are in the market of pc building on a budget, or just feel like pumping money into a different part of the pc build because this board does all they need and will be wasting money on features they won’t use had they stepped up in the product line of motherboards and that’s where this boards fits a good sweet spot.

Cons: The ps/2 connection is nice but who still uses that really now? 2013 model with ps/2 connection really you can use USB slots for that instead and be more versatile, the same goes with VGA. I do realize VGA a is still prevalent but mainstream dictates HDMI which it already has and the dvi slot understand for extra high definition support. Those two features could be replaced with more functional ports. The last tidbit I have about this item is like the previous owner sated it turn back on from time to time after I turn it off idk weird.

Other Thoughts: i own other asus products and i cant complain to much asus support is pretty stale its alwasys some scripted stuff and they just point at general resources and dumb stuff its never detaile, and time is always iffy i get it they have so many priducts so many places but hey it come witht eh territory of selling stuff support it,

2 out of 5 eggsDecent entry level motherboard

Pros: good labeled surface and works decently. also, brand name.

Cons: I thought purchasing a asus board would be better than buying a gigabyte board. However, i found that this board was the lowest of the lowest entry board and is practically useless. It is not worth the 110 dollar price tag and i highly regret buying this. I ran into many problems during the installation, and regular use. i have a i7 4770k processor and 8 gb of hyperx ram. Do not buy if you are considering a different motherboard.

Other Thoughts: From now on, i will look very closely at the motherboards i buy and will spend a little more money as well as probably go with gigabyte boards.

4 out of 5 eggsz87-k experience

Pros: Nice BIOS - easy to get around and nice that it works with the mouse, first mobo I've built with this

Cons: HDMI port crashes after a variable length of time but minutes not hours. First tried with Win8.1 with HDMI port connected my monitor, screen goes black a few minutes after install, then won't boot into Windows anymore. Tried Win7 with same result, tried on SSD card and HDD, no difference. Tried different Intel HD drivers, no different. Tried latest BIOS, no difference. Then tried a DVI to HDMI cable (DVI at mobo end) and it works! No clue why, might try a different HDMI cable but really can't see why that should be then problem. Maybe the HDMI port is faulty but then why stop working after a variable number of minutes working. When screen goes black incidentally, it flickers every 2 seconds between very dark grey (mobo has some output but blank) and black (no signal) Would be good to know if anyone has a clue about this or has had it and found a solution.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat entry level mobo

Pros: Good price, USB 3, plenty of SATA ports, supports 4 RAM chips, on-board video and audio, on-board LAN, plenty of USB ports internal and external. Includes 2 locking SATA cables. Supports advanced configurations and overclocking.

Cons: Minor configuration issues. USB seems a bit squirrelly, but I suspect a BIOS update will resolve. SATA seems to drop the DVD now and then. Again, suspect a BIOS update needed. RAM detects at a lower speed than rated, but can manually bump it up. Tight fit of RAM at the CPU cooler.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's a good entry level board for your i5, i7 CPU. I'm running with the Haswell i5 and it POSTED perfect first time.

The USB does seem to be a bit flaky, but a BIOS update will probably resolve it. Any of the minor inconveniences alone wouldn't be a big deal, but all combined it's worth dinging a couple of stars.

I would like to have seen more SATA cables included as 2 simply isn't enough, but like most geeks I have a drawer full of SATA cables, so I dug into my stash.

The RAM slots are *very* close to the CPU. I'm running the stock Intel cooler, but depending on the size of what cooler you're running, you might not be able to fit the RAM in there against it. My RAM chips have large heat spreaders and they fit ... barely.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

I am sorry that you are having issues with the motherboard. If I may, I would like to help. What BIOS version do you currently have installed? Also did the USB problems happen with only certain devices? Does Device Manager still show the USB connections? At your earliest convenience, please contact me through email and we can discuss this case further. Within the email, please include the serial number of the motherboard. Ref: 3310682.

Mark
