New UEFI BIOS – Friendlier and More Intuitive
Exclusive EZ Mode Adds Useful Info to Become Even Easier
Media-renowned UEFI BIOS from ASUS provides the smoothest mouse-controlled graphical BIOS, and now features more intuitive functions to quickly take you to favorite BIOS pages and frequently-accessed settings through custom shortcuts. You can even write quick notes in-BIOS for future reference, view an activity log of setting changes and modifications, and rename SATA ports. With USB 3.0 Boost technology, a USB device's transmission speed is significantly increased up to 170%, adding to the already fast USB 3.0 performance. ASUS software automatically accelerates data rates for compatible USB 3.0 peripherals without any user interaction.
USB BIOS Flashback
Simple Plug and Press Hardware-Based BIOS Flashing
Hardware-level USB BIOS Flashback allows users to update to new UEFI BIOS versions, even without a CPU or DRAM installed. Just plug in a USB flash drive containing the BIOS file, and press the RESET button for three seconds with the power supply connected. Hassle-free updating for ultimate convenience!

You can also enter the BIOS directly with one click through a user-friendly interface, and quickly select your preferred system boot up method: either get to the OS in seconds, or opt for regular boot up. Whatever your choice, the settings are saved and persistent, with no need to choose every time you power on.

1 out of 5 eggsMost frustrating build I've ever done.

Pros: Haven't found any yet.

Cons: 1. Board won't POST! I've tried three popular brands of memory sticks (G.Skill Ripjaws X, Corsair Dominator, and Kingston) at 1600, 1333, and 1333 respectfully, and none have worked. Called Asus tech who claims that NONE of the memory sticks that I have used are "compatible" with that board. He sent me an email listing all the " known compatible memory sticks" (its not a long list). I copied and pasted ALL model numbers from the list to Newegg's search, and Newegg only sells three on the list. I ordered a set of Corsair Vengeance 1600. Email today says I have to wait five more days for delivery. I'll keep you posted.

2. As someone else mentioned, the lower PCI slot is too close to the USB connectors and service panel connectors.

Other Thoughts: I bought this because everyone seems to praise Asus boards. This board is advertised by both Asus and Newegg as simply requiring DDR3 memory at 1600/1333/1066. If Asus is manufacturing motherboards that are not 'compatible' with three of the most popular memory sticks sold at Newegg, I don't think that this is a board worth a) the cost, or b) the research needed to acquire specific components for most of us novices. Oh, this is the 12th PC I've built for myself, friends , and family, and the only one that didn't work perfectly when I turned it on.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We appreciate you taking the time to inform us on your ASUS experience. Please accept our sincerest for the inconvenient experience. Have you already tried testing your motherboard outside of your case on a non-conductive surface to check for a possible short in your chassis? Which BIOS version are you currently operating on? What is the part number to the DIMM kits you are using? Are you using 1 or 2 pairs of DIMM kits? Please make sure all your GPU connectors are firmly installed and that all your SATA drives are receiving power from your PSU. Clear CMOS and see if the board will POST. If it will not, pull one memory module and place the other stick in the slot furthest from the CPU and see if that helps. Please make sure to complete the power off cycle before testing hardware to avoid damaging your hardware. I would recommend flashing to the latest UEFI (2101) if you can get the board to POST for optimal system stability and compatibility. You can locate the BIOS for your motherboard on our Online ASUS Help Desk: If you have any further questions you can contact me directly at

Thank you for choosing ASUS!

Best Regards,
ASUS Customer Loyalty – US Support

5 out of 5 eggsH87M-Pro

Pros: All of the feature boxes are ticked for this motherboard, particularly given its age (H97/Z97 chipsets are newer but more expensive). It comes with three 4-pin PWM fan headers in addition to the normal CPU 4-pin PWM fan header. While ALC892 is not the latest audio chipset from Realtek, it was when this board was designed, and it works fine (I have had ALC892 before, no complaints). The ASUS BIOS flash-back USB port is a very welcome feature, giving us an easy BIOS upgrade for Devil's Canyon (see Other Thoughts). The features and build quality of this motherboard were unbeatable at time of purchase for me. The latest ASUS BIOS updates for some H87-class motherbaords enabled overclocking with Intel K-series CPU's, including Devil's Canyon. Combine all of that with the little things ASUS does to make their motherboards standout and you have a winner - blacked-out PC board, locking SATA cables and blacked-out I/O shield in the box, detailed paper manual and the always-reliable ASUS product downloads from their website.

Cons: Very minor nitpicking here, but the price dropped by $10 the day after I bought mine.

Other Thoughts: Old Egg's previous review is accurate. If you do your homework well you create a USB flash drive with the latest renamed BIOS in its root ahead of your build. Then build your hardware and follow the noted instructions in the manual on pg. 2-12. Worked first time, flawlessly.

5 out of 5 eggsYou will need to UPDATE the BIOS for new gen processors to work

Pros: Good stable motherboard, and lots of options. Follow instruction manual on page 2-12 to update the BIOS from a USB stick and pushing Reset button for few seconds. After BIOS updated system works wonderfully

Cons: No warning that you must update to latest BIOS before your system will boot up with new gen processor installed.

Other Thoughts: i7 3970s
Will be using this for Surveillance DVR PC, with 16 Cameras.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat H87 Board

Pros: Tons of features, solid high quality board with a nice upgrade path, this will be my main work board for many years. Very easy to set up, almost impossible to brick the BIOS. Win 7 drivers work perfect. EUFI BIOS is really nice, almost endless tweaking if you want or just run in easy mode for full automation, this board will make the novice and pro happy. Update the BIOS before you install the OS, it's so easy and fast,

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Be carefull with drivers you get from the Intel site, Intel likes to bundle so much bloatware with thier video drivers (embeded GPU) and the SATA drivers, if you install it all it will add almost a dozen uesless services that steal ram/cpu from you with no benefit, shame on Intel, they make nice hardware but are clueless when it comes to consumer software, many people are angry in the intel forums.

1 out of 5 eggsLemon

Pros: Goodly amount of fan headers and the fan management software works 'Like a breeze' easy to install in my Bitfenix case. Bought it for HTPC I didn't need the overclocking or tweaking features. On board video and audio worked great.

Cons: Nothing but problems with this board. Memory would only install in The B slots(not what the manual stated)-And to get the proper configuration I had to install the sticks five times causing the snap-in tab to break. My Evga GeForce 640 Graphics card that I decided to get a few months later would only work in the second slot. I couldn't get anywhere with Phone support-They knew less than I did about the board-They couldn't say whether the other two memory slots would work and I didn't want to purchase more to find out. When I asked for level 2 support I was told to wait for a call.On two occasions I waited all day.and no one called back .I then tried e-mail and got a snarky ' deal with it' reply back saying that some memory works only works in certain configurations and some video cards wont work in the first slot.I then e-mailed back a second time for an RMA which they were kind enough to agree to.Unfortunately the socket pins were damaged during shipping and are not covered under Asus warranty.Repair would be $90 + my shipping cost was $16 so that's almost the cost of the board. They Refused to Replace the board ( even though the slot issues were pre-existing to damage) or upgrade me to a different board if I paid the difference. They also refused to hold onto the board until my insurance claim went thru so I will have to pay for re-shipping again if I want it repaired. I am not Happy

5 out of 5 eggsZero issues, rock stable. no swear

Pros: Installed Windows 8, booted up and went to work.
I use the onboard video and it's more than enough for what I do which is watch youtube videos, play a few games on and remote tech support.
Has worked since day 1 with never ever as much as a hiccup. I would build more systems based on this kind of experience. See my setup in other thoughts

Cons: None I can think of. You can read the specs for yourself so I won't go into how many ports or how much memory or other details. It just works.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Just like its ATX big brother, H87-PRO, except no legacy PCI slots. I used the H87-PRO in a build 6 months ago and have been very pleased with it. I have not needed legacy PCI for some time so went with this micro version. Ubuntu Linux
14.04 had no problem with it.

Cons: The new UEFI interface is not always intuitive.
