4 out of 5 eggsworkstation motherboard

Pros: Lots of features
helpful manual
ECC support
PCI x16 support

Cons: ECC support not obvious
A couple bad page references in manual (I'm nitpicking here)

Other Thoughts: I think this is a good workstation/light server motherboard. I had no trouble getting it running, and the included manual was helpful. I bought it for its support of ECC ram plus a modern video card like a GeForce GTX 970.

However, there are a lot of complaints here about ECC support. After doing some research, I determined there's really no reliable way of determining if ECC support is active through software. For instance, on my system (Linux v3.13.0), dmiencode does not report ECC ram. I'm taking Asus's word for it, that ECC is indeed working, but the motherboard should have better software ECC support, and there should be better reporting in the BIOS about whether ECC is active.

3 out of 5 eggsWhere's the SR-IOV Support?

Pros: C226 Chipset gives you DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort out using your 12x5-series v3 Xeon with integrated graphics saving you badly needed PCIe lanes

16 lanes of PCIe 3.0 goodness
another 4 lanes of PCIe 2.0 to fall back on
Onboard NICs (Intel I210's...not bad) use 1 lane each...

Up to 32GB of DDR3 with UDIMM ECC (unbuffered/unregistered) support (as long as you use a Xeon and not a 4th Gen Core i3/i5/i7 (Haswell)

USB 3.0 ports on rear as well as a header on MB for additional lanes to front or back as you so choose

VT-d support

UEFI BIOS with overclocking support (fully tunable thanks to ASUS' superior engineering support)

Cons: As far as I can tell, no SR-IOV support as of BIOS release 1707 (1/16/2014)...Chipset, CPU, and Intel NIC (I350-T4) should all be playing together nicely as VT-x and VT-d support is present and enabled...but no SR-IOV support in BIOS (per MS Windows Server 2012 R2 diagnostics) as ACS for PCIe is not supported

This is a BIG con for me...minus 2 stars

ASUS - get your act together and add SR-IOV support BIOS!

4 out of 5 eggsWould be nice to have these specs in a micro-atx format

Pros: I do not own this board and I have no intention of buying it. However, I would buy several boards with workstation specs (especially ECC memory) if it is offed in micro-atx format.

Cons: Too big - please offer this in micro-atx format with only 4 expansion slots. The days of giant workstations are gone. If a board has decent built-in video and sound, there is not much need for so many expansion slots.

Other Thoughts: It would be really nice have a true workstation board, i.e., ECC memory, build in sound and video, in micro-atx format. The days of giant workstations are over - take a look at the Mac-Pro!

Please do not try to sell boards that cannot handle ECC memory as workstation caliber boards. They are not - you only hurt your brand doing this.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: Very easy to assemble and set up. Well documented and clearly labeled. Way more features than I will ever use.

No problems so far with either Windows 7 or Ubuntu 13.10 (Asus web site says that Ubuntu 13.04 and RH 6.3 are supported on this board, though the manual doesn't say so). Integrated graphics gives me dual monitors out of the box (in both Windows and Ubuntu) with no graphics card needed.

ECC does work (according to dmidecode).

Cons: lm-sensors 3.3 knows about the Nuvoton NCT6779D, but can only read the board and CPU temps, not fan speeds. IPMI would have been nice. No provision for iKVM, unfortunately.

Other Thoughts: I have been so happy with the P9D-E/4L and P9D-C/4L that I decided to grab this one to upgrade my workstation. I chose it because of the C22X chipset and dual i210 NICs, and outfitted it with a Xeon E3-1245 v3. This makes it not only a great workstation, but a decent server if I need it for a spare.

I've been very pleased with the P9D product line.

2 out of 5 eggsMuch to improve

Pros: On the pro side, the card has a solid build, comes with clear manuals, good packaging and easy BIOS update.

In addition, ECC seems to be operational and working (tested via ecc-check.c and dmidecode)

Cons: Lack of console serial port redirect / ipmi onboard. (feature available on the equivalent ASRock C226 mobo)

Poor Linux support... and I mean POOR as terrible.

dmidecode reports the wrong wrong memory Total Width

ACPI issues result on scary (but apparently harmless) SATA resyncs every few minutes ( you can search for Linux Kernel Bug ID 43229 )

lm-sensors isn't working as expected (as in Intel coretemp is reporting the temp but fan speed, etc aren't detected)

Other Thoughts: Buyer BEWARE.

I got this mobo thinking I would get a smooth KVM / XenServer experience but I was dead wrong.

The Linux support of this card - despite the website stating OpenSuse, RHEL and Ubuntu support needs to improve significantly, so if you are looking for a card to hypervise like I was, chose a different manufacturer.

Manufacturer Response:

I am sorry that the motherboard did not meet you expectations. Should you have any questions about the motherboard, please feel free to ask. I can be reached through email. 3458751.

4 out of 5 eggsA solid, energy efficient, ECC supported Motherboard

Pros: 1. Solid build;
2. Support ECC memory;
3. Energy efficiency. I have made a build with this motherboard together with Seasonic Platium Power Supply and E3 1275v3, with all the energy saving features turned on. The idle power drawing in Windows is 25W!, on load is 96W (not taxing the iGPU though). After installed a GTX 470, the idle power draw is ~55W, still not bad.

Cons: 1. Though ECC memory is supported (I verified this by different ways, Single Bit ECC), the BIOS boot up screen DOESN'T show "ECC enabled". This is an issue since P8D and I do not understand why ASUS engineers reluctant to add this important message;
2. The DVI maximum resolution is 1920x1200, not sure if it is limited by the motherboard or the Intel's GPU;
3. There's some boot problem if "Fast boot" is enabled;
4. No memory voltage monitor (in BIOS). I installed 1.35V low voltage memory, however, I have no way to tell if they work at 1.35V or 1.5V;
5. BIOS always trying to boot the EFI partition regardless of the active partition setting. If you are trying to build a Hackintosh, install Chimerleon on disk0s1 instead;
6. AIDA64 cannot get the CPU fan speed, might not be a ASUS's problem (I just want to make my system lean and mean, so I skipped those bundled software by ASUS);
7. The ASUS's driver installation utility entered a "deadloop". It ask for a reboot in the beginning, after reboot, it pop up a message says some ".iins" files not found. You need to google it to figure out how to fix this. Finally I went to each subdirectory of the setup package and install drivers individually. The driver package is directly downloaded from ASUS's website, operation system is Windows 2008R2. BTW, I was using remote session to do the installation, not sure if that caused the problem.

Other Thoughts: There is a small debug board with this motherboard, just make sure it is securely inserted if you want to use it. It cost me a couple of hours to figure out this issue. The power LED in the motherboard is green, and motherboard occasionally boot, but most time, it didn't boot. This is a user error, not ASUS's problem.

1 out of 5 eggsmissing ECC support?

Pros: i like the layout of the PCI-e gen 3 connectors on this board - allows for max flexibility. not too many "useless" junk interfaces on the mobo - just the integrated stuff you want anyway.

Cons: the motherboard specs claim that ECC memory is supported with xeon processors. well, not so much... it'll boot, of course, but i see no evidence that the BIOS actually turns on ECC in the memory controller! normally, the BIOS will proudly announce it has detected ECC memory... none of that here!

i've updated to the latest BIOS, but that hasn't helped. maybe a future BIOS update???

i've seen similar review comments about another haswell board on newegg which makes me think "workstation" boards are the wrong place to look for ECC support with this generation of intel processors.

i'm going to try a proper "server" board next... this is not acceptable.

Other Thoughts: the linux EDAC subsystem is really lagging these days. the most recent
intel processor generation that's properly supported seems to be
sandy bridge.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for leaving your feedback. If I may, I would like to help.

This motherboard does, in fact, have ECC support. To ensure that the motherboard will support ECC, please make sure to confirm that the memory used is on the QVL. You can find this on our support site. Additionally, ECC support may be turned off in the BIOS. To turn on ECC support, please follow the instructions provided on page 3-32 of the user manual. If you are still having issues with the motherboard, please let me know through email, and I will be happy to help. Your reference number for this case is 3040049.

1 out of 5 eggsdisappointing

Pros: looks nice

Cons: Essentially this board became useless for my needs. Asus published drivers, BIOS and other items for download for Windows Server 2012 x64 when it was 1st released in June 2013 but as of 07/27/2013 they are no longer available.
The Intel C226 chipset is specifically designed for Intel Vt-d which is required to support manufacturer's drivers of a hardware device for use within a virtual machine on Hyper-V. Microsoft's Hyper-V drivers for VM's lack consistent development. In essence your options to use Win 08 and Win 2012 have been thwarted by Asus.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the inconvenience with the software for the P9D WS board. We are working on finishing the drivers for Server 2012 and Server 2008 R2 and will update our support page as soon as it is completed.
If you have any other questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact me at
