1 out of 5 eggsNot Cool

Pros: 6 SATA3 ports.

I turns on.

Cons: Auto overclocking feature is nonexistent on this board. I've used it on other boards without issue but this one won't have it. I don't know if it's the software or the board and customer service was not helpful at all, even when I actually talked with a human.

The wifi module is also very flakey. Poor speeds on average and won't work at all when using Bluetooth. I saw this on other reviews but thought Asus would have fixed the problem by the time I bought mine. Nope.

Stay away from this board; it's not worth your money or your time.

Other Thoughts: I've been an Asus fan for a long time but this board is so dismal that I may have to switch. I'm trading up to the Z97 ROG but if it performs as poorly as this Z87 I'll move on to another manufacturer.

This is a poor showing from one of the giants in the industry and I expected better.

4 out of 5 eggsGood MoBo

Pros: -mITX with lots of features
-cheaper than the maximus impact (or whichever the mITX is)
-everything's well arranged
-could run well for everyday use via the cpu's graphics

Cons: -Can't support a high-end cpu cooler (a big one could run into part of the mobo)
-Not enough space for any type of ram if using an air cooler (limits on height mostly)
-Sloppy wi-fi
-positioning on some of the components

Other Thoughts: I'm aware that there's a new one out right now, and it may have better performance and/or newer tech. But I did wanted to own this for a while before giving it a review.
I'd recommend this over the impact unless you want the "hd audio". sata placement's a little awkward but bearable.

Last thing I have to say is that the wi-fi IS removable and attached by 2 small screws on the bottom, and an M.2 card (someone stated it in their review). But that's an extra ~30$ for a premium motherboard. This is where it loses the 5th egg. But I can't say that I'm dissatisfied with it working flawlessly for over a year now.

ps: as a fan of mITX, if you have the money to go for it, check out the new asrock x99; that's a true minibeast that even has placed the m.2 ssd slot smartly (unlike the newer deluxe where it sits at the bottom). That may be my next build, although that's some time from now.

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost a great motherboard

Pros: Great performance for the price.
Re-flashable Bios
Several USB 3.0 Slots
Built in Wifi and Bluetooth 4.0

Cons: CHEAP Built in Wifi and Bluetooth 4.0
-Terrible wifi connection issues including dropping connections, high latency, and awful lag.
-Had to replace built in wifi card with a different one to fix issues.

Other Thoughts: I bought this motherboard over a year ago. It has been almost perfect, everything has worked flawlessly except the wifi card. Wifi Go! has been dreadful, even to the point of having ASUS replace the board in an attempt to fix the problem. After going through 2 motherboards the only solution was finally to remove the Wifi Go Module and swap out the card with a different wireless card. It uses a standard laptop wireless card for M.2 ports. After the card was replaced and new drivers were installed, all the problems went away.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Quality Motherboard

Pros: The board has lots of SATA and USB ports, a great feature set, a great firmware interface, and good overall quality.

Cons: Color is not customizable. The color looks nice, but I would have preferred green if it was possible.

Other Thoughts: I use this motherboard in my personal desktop. As someone who could be considered a “power user,” I tend to be picky in my standards and choice of hardware when it comes to building a machine. I needed something that had a broad feature set, lots of USB3 ports, well written setup firmware, and good overall quality. This particular board had the features I needed advertised, so I decided to try it.

The motherboard, in terms of feature set, performed to specifications as expected. All the advertised features worked well. If you're looking to build a smaller rig with good storage options (my case), this would be a great motherboard for you. It has 6 SATA 3 ports and 6 USB3 ports. The extra USB3 ports really help with external storage applications. The board also supports several RAID configurations across all of the SATA ports, which is handy for advanced storage setups.

The firmware interface of the motherboard is quite nice. It has a nice GUI that is easy to use and feels very functional. You can customize just about anything about the board's functionality. It also has support for customizable performance profiles. The profiles are handy for quickly switching between performance and low fan noise.

The board also has nice color scheme. I would have preferred it to be green instead of yellow, but the yellow and black color scheme still adds a nice aesthetic quality to you build.

Overall, this is a high quality motherboard. It has all the features you'd expect out of a premium motherboard. If you're looking to build a compact and powerful computer, you couldn't go wrong with this product.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Everything you need to build a solid ITX platform computer system. 6 SATA ports that's enough for 1- DVD Blue-ray and 5- hard drives. DTS sound and plenty of 3.0 USB ports. 12 + 2 power and it also has 4 fan connections. More than most ITX motherboards. When you install a cpu liquid cooler you must install the cpu in the motherboard before you install the motherboard in the case. No reason to deduct an egg. This is a stable and proven motherboard better than the Z-97. Although the Z-97 looks better. Looks not features...

Cons: No PS2 if you can call that a con. No 5 way optimization like the Z-97 boards.

4 out of 5 eggsThe good, bad, and ugly

Pros: This is a mini (very small) ITX mother board and this was my first build in this format.

The PCB is solid. The daughter board is attached well. It has more features than some will fully use. It has enough PWN MoBo connectors for the ITX format cases I looked at. It is worth buying; just bought another one.

I am not greatly concerned about how pretty a component looks; I'd rather have a mounting point for another case fan than a side window. Please see Cons and Other Thoughts.

The egg was docked because of RMA tribulations. Electronics do fail. This was my third MoBo failure since the mid 1990s; it happens.

Cons: The MB USB 3 connector might be in the way of other components. A case speaker would be nice at this price point too. The PCI slot lock is flimsy. The daughter board is close to the rear fan and in my case it fit okay.

The sordid tale:
After stripping down the MoBo and testing everything but the CPU, I contacted ASUS Tech support on-line. They sent me directly to the RMA site. After three RMA forms (the third was the only approved one) and numerous telephone calls I received advanced replacement authorization. From there on everything went smoothly.

The shinning light is that almost 45 day obscenity was Justin. I have to believe the others tried to help. Yet, I kept getting new people getting involved and overridden by the next new people.

Yes, they replaced it. Yes it took forever and they do not honor their own deadlines. It was the worst time since I had to prove to Microsoft their update corrupted my system.

Other Thoughts: I hope ASUS contacts me. They need to improve the RMA process. Worst case was the guy that hung up on me when I tried to confirm the shipping address to send the defective unit to. The best case was Justin who actually explained what was needed and how to get it done. Somebody needs to give him a raise.

Build Specs:
Case - Bitfenix Prodigy with optional mesh front panel and a Silverstone rear dust filter
Mother board - Asus Z87 I - Deluxe (Just replaced under warranty)
PSU - Seasonic X 650
CPU - i5 4670 Haswell 3.4 GHz
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 (PC3 106666) 2 X 4 GB sticks
OS HD - Samsung 840 EVO 120 GB SSD
Storage HD - Western Digital Velociraptor 1 TB HD
Optical Drive - Pioneer SATA Blu-Ray burner
Cooling has been upgraded and configured for positive pressure
Corsair H80i with fans changed out to -
2 X Noctua 120 mm NF-F12 PWM fans in push pull configuration
Front case fan replaced with -
BitFenix 230 mm Spectre Pro
Rear case fan replaced with -
Noctua 140 mm NF - A14 PWM fan

A closing thought. I like this MoBo enough to risk ASUS' customer service again and bought another one.

1 out of 5 eggsTrash

Pros: It comes on. Windows 8 installed.

Cons: Tech support, yeah if you like waiting on hold for hours, UEFI is trash, tried to install a PNY GTX 780, will not see it. CSM...done, UEFI first...done, INt 19...done. If you buy anything but an Apple computer, see a doctor.

Other Thoughts: Buy Apple.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Wi-Fi GO!, easy to install, works very well.

Cons: Wi-Fi adapter driver failed one day after first computer turn on.

Other Thoughts: The Wi-Fi driver failed, and the disc would not clear up the problem. I had to go to the manufacturer website on my laptop, install it, and transfer it to this computer via USB. That immediately cleared up the problem. Other than that, this product is really good.

3 out of 5 eggsonboard wifi... just kidding

Pros: Excellent bios.
Very quick boot times (the fastest I've ever experienced personally).
Good Features.
Natively works with three monitors at once (>2 requires bios setting change) (see "other thoughts")

Cons: On Windows7, the onboard wifi never got over 12mb dl / 4mb ul, while my laptop and two year old TP-Link external wifi (hardly larger then the asus antenna), get 22/7mb or better. To top it off, within a week, the wifi card started reporting "no connections available", while the laptop and TP-Link showed 12+ connections. On ubuntu the wifi card worked, but disconnected randomly every 10-30 seconds for about 10 minutes, before quitting completely.

I also grew frustrated with the bios resetting my boot order every time a drive was removed/added, even if it wasn't the boot drive. I'm not sure how common this is, but it is a nuisance.

Other Thoughts: This motherboard was a replacement for a Rampage III Extreme, which randomly started boot cycling. So it was disappointing to receive a new Asus and have a part fail on it within a week.

I love Asus, and have been loyal for years, having dozens of products, monitors, burners, gpus, mobos, etc. Up until this year, the only product I've had fail, was likely due to a failing PSU which burned out the next day.

I may still buy asus products after this, but I wouldn't recommend this board after reading all the issues with the wifi. At minimum, plan on replacing the wifi card, maybe with one that has WiDi.

I had another issue, while using HDMI output. I tried two different Asus VK278Q monitors, both would go black every 5-30 minutes, while my other monitors continued working. They still appeared to be receiving signal and remained backlit. Rebooting the monitor, or unplugging/replugging the hdmi from the mobo, temporarily fixed the issue. I tried multiple HDMI cables/brands, to no avail. The only thing that seemed to fix the issue was switching to an HDMI to DVI cable. This could be just a monitor issue.

Manufacturer Response:

I am sorry that you are having issues with the unit. If I may, I would like to help. Please contact me through email, including a complete list of troubleshooting steps tried, along with the serial number of the unit, and we can discuss this case further. My email can be found below. 3738676.
