Dual Intelligent Processor IVs with Four-Way Optimization

One click for better performance, efficiency, digital power control, reduced noise, and improved cooling.
Starting with the Turbo Processing Unit (TPU), Four-Way Optimization performs Auto Tuning, which automatically overclocks the CPU to within about 95% of its potential, a process that typically could take up to two days to manually overclock. Auto Tuning is even able to overclock two cores at a time, and can configured to prioritize either multiplier (default) or BLCK if desired.

The process then moves to the Energy Processing Unit (EPU), which customizes power saving profiles for periods of light use or idle states. Within this module are options to set a TDP cap for low power scenarios, as well as selectively shut off SATA and USB ports when idling.

Next, DIGI+ VRM optimizes digital power settings to take full advantage of the CPU's built-in digital power delivery, creating a more precise and stable overclocking experience through OCP and LLC presets.

Finally, Fan Xpert 2 tests and calibrates each individual case fan connected to your motherboard to create selectable cooling profiles that can be further customized upon completion. The ability to assign customized fan curves and/or all-or-nothing temperature thresholds to profiles is also included. ®

5 out of 5 eggsGood Mobo

Pros: Good looking motherboard. Great for theme builds (ROG theme or just red/black combination). A great deal of helpful functionality with the bios. Easy to navigate and modify settings for over clocking. Good optional feature for water-cooling your (cross chill design is a nice-to-have but not needed as the board tends to stay pretty cool especially since i am water-cooling the cpu).

Cons: This mother board supports dual memory (not quad memory) so if you plan to use 4 memory stick kits, the board will recognize this and process it dual channel (not quad channel). If you plan to use the AI Suite 3 for over clocking using their 4 way optimization, you may be disappointed as it does not provide full functionality on this motherboard (it only allows 4 way optimization at set 4.2, 4.4 or 4.6 ghz).

Other Thoughts: Fan control through the bios is a nice to have but you may want to grab a third party fan controller to give you more on-the-fly control (to use with your case fans but cpu fan control may be best through the bios as you can set your fan curve based on the cpu temperature (if water cooling cpu, your temps will stay pretty low so you won't notice much fan ramping up and down on the cpu). Even with the memory being dual channel instead of quad channel, I can't take away an egg from this board as it performs so well (very good design and over clocks fairly easy if you are familiar with OCing). The 4 way optimization is not an issue for me as I like manual control when I OC (as the AI suite 3 tends to use move voltage than needed for higher OCs).

I really like this motherboard as you can push it pretty hard (I'm currently running 4.4 ghz stable (4770k) and will soon ramp up to faster memory so that I can push it a bit higher.

Other areas were not enough for me to remove an egg as I didn't know it was dual channel instead of quad channel when I purchased it (that's my fault and I could have sent it back but I like the board too much).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Motherboard

Pros: Took me a while to choose a motherboard and finally decided on Asus maximus vi formula for a couple a reason. It had built in 802.11AC wifi just in case we move and I cant hook up an Ethernet cable. Option for water cooling built in, and it just looks sick. Been running just under a year with no issue at all. I love when you first start the computer it loads a replubic of gamer icon in a black background and nothing more. Bios looks great as well with the black and red theme. I guess I mainly went for looks but I dont regret it. No issue with overclocking, set at 4.0ghz with intel i7 4007k. I have no reason to go any higher it handles anything I throw at it. Actually It handle everything pretty well in stock format but I just wanted to test out the overclock feature.

Cons: None! This thing just looks and performs well

5 out of 5 eggsBeautifully made

Pros: I have only positive things to say about this baby since I've purchased it. Looks beautiful, performs amazing. Just greatness! Has everything I am looking for in a MOBO and then some. No issues that I can think of for this product. Other than price of product but I think that's to be expected. It's pretty good!

Cons: No cons

Other Thoughts: Ummm... buy it! Do it now. Quickly!

5 out of 5 eggsASUS Maximus VI Formula

Pros: A Truly wonderful MB. I have used ASUS MBs on the last few builds I have done and once again I wasn't disappointed when I purchased the Formula.
Out of the box I was impressed with the clean look and 'heft' of the MB. The armor front and back not only adds nice rigidity for hanging huge graphic cards, it also protects (and hides) most of the MB giving it a very neat look.
This MB had the features I was looking for:
* Support for 2-3 way SLI which is a down the road goal for me.
* Robust Bios that is intuitive and feature rich especially for over-clocking
* Plenty of USB 3.0 ports and some 2.0s as well
* A very good on-board sound system. PCIe slots are few especially when I eventually upgrade to SLI so this on-board solution without burning a PCIe slot was good for me and the sound is rich.
* More SATA connections than I know what to do with
* A nice on-board Wi-Fi dual band solution and though it has a nice external antenna, the MB has 2 external connections and I replaced the antenna with an ASUS 9db high gain pole antenna (around $25).
* Support for 32 gigs of memory and OC speed supported
* on-board RAID support

This board has all this and many features I haven't tapped into yet with many of those targeted to gamers but also to maximize the performance of your hardware.

It installed with no problems with the Intel i7-4770k with no BIOS upgrade necessary, it saw and I easily configured my 2 1Tb data drives in a striped RAID, I easily set the memory speed, changed the Wi-Fi antenna and it was up and running.
On a purely cosmetic note, the red/black color scheme is very nice and shown off nicely in my Corsair 650D case.

Since I only build one of these beasts every 3 years or so, I wanted a high end board to compliment the other high end components. It came down to this board and its bigger brother the Extreme for $80 more. The ROG armor on this model, not needing the 5 way SLI of the extreme and potential for water cooling the MOSFETs were the deciding factor.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Everything I was looking for in a board and much more. Definitely the backbone of my system and depending on what Intel does with the Haswell line of processors (1150 compatible?), it will be kept for upgrades. It is sad that my i7-4770k is the weakest link (performance wise) in my new rig.

2 out of 5 eggsBeautiful Board/Bad Support

Pros: Fantastic board, low profile, easy to configure,

Cons: Dead CMOS Battery less than three months after purchase. I called tech support, they told me it sounds like a dead battery and I will have to replace it. I mentioned the board should still be under warranty its new, he tried to pawn me off on the retailer and after I told him it was past that point he was like "I can give you another number you can call and they can send you a battery......."

Other Thoughts: Really pricey board poor customer service. EVGA sent me out parts for a board 3 years out of warranty for free, no hassle, phone call was less than 5 min. Looks like I'll be going back to EVGA.

2 out of 5 eggsAwesome Until...

Pros: Awesome software. Easy BIOS. Looks amazing.

Cons: ASUS support.
Died after 2 months

Other Thoughts: Worked wonderfully for the first 2 months. Almost 2 months to the day I shut down my computer and unplugged it, after plugging it back in it would not power up. So I troubleshot it, Verified it had to be my motherboard. So I started an inquiry with ASUS support that being the next logical step. A week later not having heard from them i resubmitted. I received an email the following day telling me to clear my CMOS, and if that did not work begin the RMA process. Needless to say it did not work, so I followed the link in the email to begin the RMA process. After a week of not having heard anything again I resubmitted. Another week passed, I decided to call them. They found my original email to support, and decided to blame my PSU. I told them that I had already verified that my PSU was working properly. They insisted that it was my PSU. They decided to shoot me an email with a list of troubleshooting steps. It was almost verbatim what I sent them detailing my initial troubleshooting. Step 5 was to contact NewEgg for an exchange inside of the 30 day return policy. I ordered it Jan 1. It is March 18, I'm not sure what calendar they are using but it must be different than mine. So to wrap this up it has been over 3 weeks and I am no closer to getting my computer working again. Their product was great, while it worked and getting it working again has been a nightmare and it will likely to continue to be one. This has been my worst experience with any company's support. If this goes on much longer I will never buy ASUS again, and will likely go out of my way to replace all ASUS components currently installed.

5 out of 5 eggsInsane Board

Pros: This is an awesome Motherboard. I wound up buying it on a different site because newegg was sold out at the time.

The features on this motherboard are awesome! Plenty of tweaking and modifying features for both the technically advanced and newcomers like my self.

The ability for some one with little or no knowledge of Bios navigation to overclock with one button is amazing. You can choose between 3 different pre-loaded profiles of overclocking at the touch of a button.

Wireless is really nice too. Just be aware if you plan on gaming with a wireless connection make sure you have a good router.

Q-code is another awesome feature if you should have difficulty with something on your board there are numbers displayed in the upper right hand corner of the board that can easily be looked up in the manual that will let you know what the issue is.

Another great feature about this board is the bios flashback feature. It basically guarantees you can't mess up your board. All you need is the current version of the bios formatted correctly on a flash drive. Even if your board won't post all you have to have connected is the board power and CPU socket power, insert the flash drive and hold down the flash button on the back of the board for 3 seconds and it will begin downloading the bios update from the flash drive. You don't have to have the CPU or the Ram installed to do this. In fact, you have to do this before you install the CPU and the RAM. On the driver update on Asus's website it states you need to update the bios using the flashback or EZupdate BEFORE you install the CPU in order for the bios to be compatible with the 4th gen Haswell CPUs. If you do buy this make sure to check the drivers and everything prior to beginning building, a lot of people don't realize this has to be done first.

I could go on about the features of this board but just don't have the time.

Cons: Dosen't give blowies

Other Thoughts: I was hesitant to get this board at first because of the reviews on newegg; however, after my journey through many forums and more in depth research I decided to make the plunge, and I'm so glad I did. Lots of the reviews on here complain about socket pins being bent, mPCIe wireless card not working, or failure to boot, now I can expect that I'm sure there were a couple DOAs but come on. I read a review where a guy said the thing wasn't working and he listed his tech level at above average then says in the review its his first PC build. Are you kidding me?

Anyway this was my first PC build and I managed to have no problems as I did my research before my purchase making sure everything was compatible and what steps I had to do in what order prior to setup, even contacting Asus support a few times prior to my build. They were pretty good for the most part.

As for the problems other people were having, with the rare exception of factory damage, if CPU socket pins were bent they probably didn't install it correctly then blame the product. If the wireless card wasn't working for them, chances are they tried to install it after installing the mother board in the case, which is difficult, and bent a pin on it. It's not like a card and has several long thin pins, and it fits very closely to the heatsink.

If the motherboard failed to boot, chances are they didn't update the bios either via flashback or ezflash prior to installation of the CPU and RAM. In order for the bios to be compatible with the 4th generation Haswell CPUs you first have to update the bios either via flashback (which is an awesome feature) or EZ flash BEFORE you install the CPU and the RAM. Many do not know this but it says it on the update on Asus's website. If people did some research and took their time instead of just jaming things in it would probably turn out better. I was able to make everything function properly the first time and this was my first PC build, but I did my research.

Pros: Have had this board installed for about a week. Build went very easy. The board is obviously high quality given the price point. Sure you could get another 10 port SATA for $160-$180, but this board has about ten billion crazy addons that make up the price differential.

BIOS is decent. Overlclocking profiles do make things easier, but those will only work to a certain point...Make sure you switch to XMP profile if you purchase high speed DDR3. It's easy, and I did find the board detected the profiles correctly. The core i7 and GSKILL overclocked easily to 3.9 on the basic mobo profile.

Board comes with some whiz-bang stuff. Most of it's good, some of it's useless. At least the SATA ports have 90deg angles on them. Works well since the SATA ports are mounted to the side.

Plenty of fan leads, though I found I ran at the top of the board and I had to route some fan cables down to find slots on the motherboard.

Since my install ultimately went down extremely easily and this board has performed as expected I think it's worthy of the 5 eggs. That's my initial reaction, will update as time passes.

The 10x SATA, socket 1150, Z87, and extras were what sold me. Now it just needs to work reliably for the duration. I have had Asus in the past with no problems on the mobo, lets see how this one does.

Cons: Wish it was cheaper, but it's understandable.

Other Thoughts: If all you need is Z87 and 10x SATA you can save $100 by sacrificing on all the extras. If you don't care, like Asus, want the extras, then this works great.

1 out of 5 eggsmPCIe Combo 2 WiFi dead

Pros: The motherboard comes with great features for overclocking and tuning. Great overall look.

Cons: The mPCIe combo two wireless broke. I called ASUS tech support, we tried some troubleshooting. (didn't fix the problem) Then they wanted me to clear my CMOS by taking out the battery in the motherboard, I asked if the clear CMOS button on the I/O shield is fine but they said no so I would have to take apart my computer. I hung up and called back and got someone different, they did say that using that button was fine. I cleared the CMOS and still the WiFi was not fixed. I asked Asus if they could just send me a replacement mPCIe combo 2, they replied saying that I had to send in my motherboard. This is a work PC and a motherboard RMA was not an option. The WiFi is still broken and Asus has horrible tech support. When I asked for a replacement mPCIE combo two the representative would get angry and said that would not work. I called Newegg and they were very helpful and they called ASUS for me and ASUS turned them down as well. This broke 31 days after I bought the motherboard so it could not be returned. I doubt I will ever buy anything from ASUS again unless this problem is resolved.

Other Thoughts: I am very unhappy with ASUS. I know they have some great products but their tech support is horrible.

Manufacturer Response:
