Dual Intelligent Processor IVs with Four-Way Optimization

One click for better performance, efficiency, digital power control, reduced noise, and improved cooling.
Starting with the Turbo Processing Unit (TPU), Four-Way Optimization performs Auto Tuning, which automatically overclocks the CPU to within about 95% of its potential, a process that typically could take up to two days to manually overclock. Auto Tuning is even able to overclock two cores at a time, and can configured to prioritize either multiplier (default) or BLCK if desired.

The process then moves to the Energy Processing Unit (EPU), which customizes power saving profiles for periods of light use or idle states. Within this module are options to set a TDP cap for low power scenarios, as well as selectively shut off SATA and USB ports when idling.

Next, DIGI+ VRM optimizes digital power settings to take full advantage of the CPU's built-in digital power delivery, creating a more precise and stable overclocking experience through OCP and LLC presets.

Finally, Fan Xpert 2 tests and calibrates each individual case fan connected to your motherboard to create selectable cooling profiles that can be further customized upon completion. The ability to assign customized fan curves and/or all-or-nothing temperature thresholds to profiles is also included.

Sonic Radar

In-Game Sound Visualization Overlay
Dedicated to FPS gamers, Sonic Radar is a stealthy overlay that shows you what opponents and teammates are up to. Gunshots, footsteps, and call-outs appear with precise directioning via the on-screen radar. Includes a hotkey that allows you to switch sound detection focus for specific effects within games, and intuitive settings that provide greater gaming experiences:

Four optimized game presets: three fine-tuned presets based on major FPS games, plus one general preset, all ready for your arena of engagement.

Six key sound effects detected: visualize major game sound effects to help you complete your mission every time.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent, feature rich!

Pros: This motherboard is astounding. It has so many features on such a compact platform. There are just too many to list, but here is the simplest way to put it, as myself and almost every other serious review out there would sum this up. If you want the hands down, very best, Mini-ITX motherboard out there, this is the board you want.

Cons: Some CPU coolers may have compatibility issues with the riser card(s). And a newer version is available.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking at this board, go with the ASUS Impact VII Z97 instead. It takes everything this board has, and even improves on it slightly more so, for the same price.

1 out of 5 eggs4 month board and then adios SATA

Pros: Works quite well when it works.

Cons: Tech support is good if you forget to plug the computer into the wall outlet, don't hook up the monitor or forget to install RAM, after that you are on your own to get things working. 3 weeks to get my repaired (un-repaired) board back to me. SATA just does not work. My Z97 plus also has some finicky issues with USB 3.0. With ASUS, I have come to expect it. My advice, avoid ASUS, its all made in China stuff.

Other Thoughts: Board vomited taking my SSD, HDD, optical drive and PSU with it. Tech support at ASUS is ASUK's. The online chat, email and telephone folks are decent, but never solve anything. The worst thing is all they can do is issue RMA's to send your board in for repair. I find myself in this predicament once again when my board returned 3 weeks late, $169 poorer and the same SATA issue where BIOS never sees them regardless of any settings.

3 out of 5 eggsHorrible Sound Card, otherwise great MOBO

Pros: I bought this MOBO because I was looking for features packed into an MITX chassis to replace and supplement my Laptop (MSI GT70). I am not a gamer at all, on the contrary, I hate games, and I bought this, and many other products, simply for their reliability and general quality. Installation was easy, for the most part. Choosing SATA ports properly was a tough decision. I had fun putting the board together. The Wifi card is finicky, but I don't need or use it, so I resigned myself to letting that slide.

Upon booting up for the first time, I was greeted with a dazzling array of features that I will never use! Things I never even imagined presented themselves, from fan speeds to DRAM voltage management and individual CPU core settings. The UI is garrish, but it's more interesting than the boring text based BIOS' that were the norm not even five years ago. After navigating successfully to the options I needed, I installed windows without a hitch. Installing the drivers and software was easy. ASUS' site is intuitive and their downloads server is very fast.

The main reason I bought this is because I needed onboard sound. I knew I would need a simple GPU in the future, so hogging the PCI slot was not an option. This MOBO made all the claims that made my ears perk up, and at the price point, I imagined I was getting something at least comparable to a dedicated sound card, but unfortunately, I couldn't be more disappointed. The Cons section will focus on this.

Cons: The sound is really my only complaint. Everything else exceeds my expectations and makes me proud of my purchase. Getting on with it, all of the claims made by ASUS about this sound card are probably true, but the faults of the general setup as a whole make them impossible to appreciate.

First, the ports themselves are not placed intelligently at all. Realtek only acknowledges certain ports as having certain, specific functions. It wouldn't have taken much to allow all ports to perform all the same functions (ie, Front Speaker, Rear, Center, Mic in, Headphones). They are just 3.5mm jacks. This isn't a problem if you use a single set of desktop speakers, or maybe headphones, but when you need to setup complex arrangements (Like 5.1, or a Quadraphonic setup that doesn't sound awful in my case), it severely limits the options you have as far as cable management. I absolutely have to use the front audio port to connect my second set of speakers.

The majority of the ports on the back are totally useless to me, and probably most people. Audio Out, Audio In, and Mic In. The later two cannot be used as outputs by realtek, and if you try, they won't ground out and you get an annoying buzz until you remove the jack. That cuts down your ports from five, to basically two (the front headphone and rear Audio Out).

The program itself, Realtek HD Audio Manager, is a proprietary version for this soundcard. You CANNOT install a different Realtek Audio Manager (like the one I have for restoring my MSI GT70, which has never failed me). You are greeted with another garrish UI filled with dumb features and sound effects that probably don't interest you at all. Also, the silly audio detection thing for playing shooters with, which I completely ignored. The settings tab is not helpful at all, and provides nothing except more confusion (mute the rear output device when a headphone is plugged in OR Make front and rear audio devices play two separate streams independently). Both of these are mutually exclusive, and you cannot balance the front and rear outputs by default, even if you wanted to. You have to do it by roundabout methods by playing around with the quadraphonic option, or settling upon using them in tandem as stereo (which defeats the purpose).

As soon as you get it how you like it, which takes a lot of fiddling and nonsense that shouldn't even occur, the program may or may not automatically boot with windows, and windows will take over. When the program boots, the settings and specific pattern that you set for your speakers to work in tandem will be reset, more than likely.

I don't have a digital output via SPDIF, but I plan on getting one soon. I don't imagine I'll run into difficulties with that. If I do, I'll be forced to buy a PCI card.

Other Thoughts: I could complain about the soundcard all day, like I did above, but in reality, my setup is not typical, and most people would not be stupid enough to use two sets of desktop speakers to get better sound. While the system only has two outputs, any more would probably irritate users who are still in the stone age and use 3.5mm Microphones and did not have options. However, I feel the vast majority of people are more concerned with sound output than input, and there are dedicated solutions for both. This is not a solution for either. The components are probably great, and if not top of the line, at least very good, and it's clear ASUS had high hopes, but unless I'm missing something, Realtek is what's holding back this card. I was not able to find any third party solutions to replace realtek, but there are hardware limitations as well that can't be ignored.

This MOBO overall is fantastic, and I can overlook everything I mentioned, especially if I swap my GPU for a fancy-pants sound card with a digital out and all the bells and whistles. If they are not confident in the soundcard, they should make less effort to make it sound so grand on the product page. I suppose it's my fault for getting excited about onboard audio in the first place!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I do apologize that you are not happy with the audio of your motherboard. If any problems arise from the board, please contact me through email and include your reference number within the subject line. In addition, please provide me with what troubleshooting steps you had tried, as well as the rest of the systems hardware configuration. Thank you. Cs#N140953082

4 out of 5 eggsI recommend!

Pros: RAM Disk - turn your memory into storage
OC - so incredibly easy to over clock your system. My 4770K is running at 4.6GHz
Looks Fantastic - With my custom water loop you get to see everything.
mITX fanboy dream.

Cons: It seems to have the same issues that seem to be inherent in the newer ASUS motherboards...
USB - My Corsair K70 Keyboard will only work if the keyboard is plugged into the bottom USB 2 port. My external Seagate hard drive will only be recognized in the bottom USB 2 port. My Canon printer will only work in the bottom USB 2 port. See the issue with this? I have tried other devices and keyboards and most things seem to work in the other USB ports. for this I had to dock the egg.
Other Minor complaints...
The m.2/wifi daughter card seems to shift around even when bolted to the motherboard. Once installed it doesn't get touched so not a big deal.
SATA port placement - It's packed between the PCIe slot and the Memory so I had to get imaginative with the cable management and still couldn't hide the SATA cable as much as I would like. With how much they packed on this board how can I complain?

Other Thoughts: Runs hot, but that's to be expected when overclocking! I have a custom water cooling loop in this one and I can keep the temperature down to below 60C under full load, but I did so by dropping the over clock to 4.2GHz. I was running fairly stable at 4.6 but the temps were getting upwards of 79C so I didn't push it any higher than that. Still not too concerning but beware, if you want to max out the OC make sure you have the proper cooling in place.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome board!!

Pros: I purchased this board after reading reviews and watching the newegg video about it. I also trust Asus. I've built an awesome little system centered around this Mobo & I'm very happy with it.

Cons: Not a con, really, but building a mini-ITX system is a bit more difficult if you have large hands ;-)

The system wouldn't reboot and just hung at shutdown until I updated the bios. After that, everything is butter.

Other Thoughts: Other people have said they get a "boot-loop" when they first power it up. I did as well, but realized it was optimizing the memory I'd put in for the best possible speeds. In order to do that, it sets parameters and tries to post. If it doesn't post, it changes the parameters and reboots. Once the system posts and everything checks out, the system will boot normally.

I thought I had a bad board when I first turned it on, until I read the manual ;-)

I would highly recommend this board to anyone wishing to build a mini-ITX system.

1 out of 5 eggsStill problems after RMA

Pros: Board is working BUT!!!

Cons: Motherboard still will not RESET or RESTART after RMA
AUDIO is very bad with headphones or speakers
Asus quality control in the toilet and RMA service is even worse

Other Thoughts: Mobo will not reset after a driver is installed requiring you to do a restart when I do the computer just hangs monitor goes out saying no connection. So I have to HOLD down the start button to do a hard reset every time. The RMA took 3 weeks to get back not to mention after filling out online forms to be ask the same question over again by tech before RMA was even approved. Total waist of time and delay not good ASUS with today's mobo are so short term because a new one comes out months later making this obsolete and old. ASUS now and lost my business tell someone steps up to fix the many problems.

I will pass on ASUS products now they have to many motherboards out and the quality control now is in the toilet now just see the bad reviews and problems people have complained about without even a ASUS representative stepping forward trying to help us.

1 out of 5 eggsnot a happy customer

Pros: everything works other then the audio(or at least has stated) the reason I purchased this was its a rog board small form factor and the latest superb audio. see cons...

Cons: first off they are advertising this to be able to handle up to a 600ohm headset both on the website and in the owners manual, well if you have a headset over 50ohm forget it. secondly the original driver on the drivers disk for this audio card had a button for headphone virtualization which did not actually work so they took it off the next driver update so I guess if you were expecting positional audio from their advertised gaming audio from this card forget that too. third even the latest version of the drivers from the website with the sonic radar (which im assuming is supposed to take the place of not having 3d positional audio) I have not been able to ever get working under windows 8.1 since ive owned the board.

Other Thoughts: I do feel like ive either been miss led and false advertising is at play. the only headset ive been able to listen to with a good loud volume level was a cheap set that were 32ohm. have both astro a40 and sennheiser g4me zero, astro a40 is somewhat ok its 50ohm but the sennheiser g4me zero is 150ohm (which is well in operating spec of 600ohm sounds like your at the doctor taking a hearing test). I ve tried contacting asus on many numerous occasions and emailed corporate at least 10 times from two different emails with no response and no resolution from customer support. Ive always had great luck with asus products not once have I ever had an issue over the past 14 years. with them or tech support. however im not sure why they are dropping the ball on this either a serious manufacturing flaw or miss advertisement but they will not provide a solution. ive currently using a asus xonar U7 external usb audio card and it is raited at up to 150ohm and its more then enough to run my headsets but to have to spend another $80 to replace something that should work has advertised is un acceptable. What is even more odd then the fact they refuse to correct the audio issue is the fact the maximus VII gene has came out with a new and improved audio card the supreme fx impact II and doesn't have the issues this card has ive tried it, not to mention they are releasing a new version of this board the maximus VII impact which wouldn't you know it has the new and fixed version of this card. I don't mean to point fingers here but I feel asus has done something a bit underhanded here and are avoiding it.

Pros: Looks cool, might make a nice paperweight.

Cons: Board arrived DOA, would not post BIOS and was stuck in an infinite boot loop. Gave me the error code 00. After hours of trying to get it to post it finally did. But was extremely buggy, only booting every other attempt and refusing to detect my optical drive. AVOID THIS BOARD AT ALL COSTS. It is a common issue with them !

Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed in ASUS. Thought their products could be trusted. Just issued an RMA, and plan to ship it back today. If Newegg claims there is a bent pin or that I broke something on installation I will blow a gasket and never buy from them for the rest of my tech carrier. I now have to wait who knows how many weeks to get my computer running.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I wanted

Pros: Does everything I wanted, including having an m.2 slot.
Wonderfully tiny package.
DIDN'T have bent cpu pins!

Cons: Hard to get to the SATA ports with a CPU cooler on.
Not all CPU coolers fit due to the power daughterboard.

Other Thoughts: Didn't fit a Scythe Big Shuriken 2 due to the power daughterboard, but I knew that was a gamble when I purchased. One /might/ fit if you have low profile RAM, but G.SKILL Trident X is anything but low profile. XP
