1 out of 5 eggsOngoing Issues

Pros: Has every feature you would want in a high end motherboard

Cons: Problems with USB Flashback port and software features
No stock for replacement, no ETA on replacement, not stable. Customer service lacking

Other Thoughts: I have been using Asus boards since the early 90's and that's why this is a shock.

I decided to build my new system with the top of the line board hence the Quad. Sadly I purchased in December 2013 but was not able to build until the New Year or I would have had it replaced with Newegg. I was unable to get the Charger+ to function and several other of the utilities included in the software suite. After working with the tech support people through emails, they decided it was most likely a defective port and issued an RMA on the board. I returned the board to Asus and after about a week I was informed that this model is on back order and there was no ETA available. I was also told that the board had bent pins and that I would have to pay if I wanted a replacement board. This was not a problem before I sent in the board, but I never thought to take pictures before I returned the unit. Having no recourse and needing my system for work I reluctantly paid 130.00 for a new board. The following week I received a replacement board and it was also problematic as it refused to post. I went through all the normal procedures to rectify this without success. I contacted Asus and was told there is no stock and no ETA on this board.

Asus has been responsive to my emails however since I use my PC for web design I have some very upset clients as I am unable to do any work on their sites
.
How long do I have to wait for a working board? I suggested that no retailers have stock and am wondering if this board has been discontinued or recalled due to issues? I have asked Asus if the Z97 boards have replaced these units as has been suggested by some stores and that Asus should just replace it with the new model. I have been told this is not the case, and I am still left waiting.

I returned the first board on April 21st which is over a month with no replacement.

Sadly I am at a loss as to what to do since this is the first time I have had a board issue and have had to RMA a unit.

I have always built systems for people using Asus and always recommend Asus boards and their various other products. However this issue has left me wondering if the company has lowered there QC standards.

2 out of 5 eggsIssues Out of the Box

Pros: Great specs! Wonderful features and the board actually runs very well, once I get it running.

Cons: Will not power off. Tell Windows or Ubuntu to Shut Down, the system powers off, then three seconds later powers itself back on again. The only way to power it off is using the PSU switch.

After turning off at the PSU, an error occurs at boot up, stating that the Memory Address is Insufficient due to Intel Thunderbolt resource consumption. There are no Thunderbolt peripherals attached to my system. Even if I disable this, the error still occurs. I have to clear CMOS, reboot, and reconfigure the BIOS to enable XMP in order to have my 2666 mHz RAM recognize properly.

After all that, it finally runs GREAT! Tests very well, and all my games run smoothly. I have opened a case with Asus this evening, we will see how they respond.

Other Thoughts: I will update with my opinions on the level of service from ASUS after they respond.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

5 out of 5 eggsASUS Z87-Deluxe/Quad Motherboard

Pros: *Best motherboard for future use (6 USB 3.0, 4 USB 2.0, 10 SATA ports, 2 Thunderbolt2 ports @ 20 Gbs each, Realtek’s ALC1150 audio codec).
*Good Simple coloring scheme, Black, to show off my other components & lighting, and Gold, to show how much I had to spend for the motherboard)
*Excellent layout
*Board well marked
*Best board you can get if your are not a rabid Gamer
*Overclocking: Switching the board manually to TPU II, comes as close instantly to spending over one hour of tweaking the bios. So just switch to TPU= II if you want to maximize the board, and spend your time tweaking the GPU or the memory.

Cons: Expensive, but mollified by all the "bells and whistles"

Other Thoughts: Several reviews of this board said ASUS should let us know which of the 2 Ethernet ports is the Intel one.
I just received my ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Quad motherboard, and it has an "Intel" sticker that covers the top of the Ethernet output port (the one closest to the BIOS feedback button), that states "Intel Ethernet, Great Capability, GBit LAN". Then by default, the Ethernet port next to the Analog port is the Realtek port !

1 out of 5 eggsUnfortunate experience

Pros: Excellent features and accessory set, Thunderbolt 2, Wi-fi, NFC, and USB 3.0.

Cons: Memory instability, issues with getting Intel RST accelerator technology working.

Other Thoughts: First off, Newegg has been great. I returned the memory modules believing them to to at fault, but picked up some test modules and another motherboard while I was waiting for the turn-around.. Checked out fine in the other motherboard, but not this board. Asked for replacement, but since the Deluxe/Quad is out of stock now (ran out or recalled?) I'm rethinking my brand purchase. Whatever I choose I'll likely get from NE. You're service is great.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked fine, very briefly.

Pros: Board was easy to set up and system ran fine.

Cons: Failed after four months of use. ASUS support has been totally unhelpful, both in troubleshooting the problem as well as setting up an RMA. Have been waiting over a week at this point for RMA instructions with no updates from customer service.

Other Thoughts: Apparently ASUS products suffer from shoddy build quality, and the company is completely unwilling or unable to stand by its service obligations. I do not plan to purchase any more ASUS equipment.

2 out of 5 eggsupdate bruce r

Pros: lots of nice features--when the board works--

Cons: Had to get help from a great guy in product support at New Egg--we walked through a trouble shoot to find the problem with no post was actually a bad hdmi connection on the MB--not the memory, not the bios, and all the other things and hoops the ASUS techs tried. My problem appears very similar to that of another buyer with a 1 egg rating--Thanks for helping me Chad from Newegg--great job. TOO BAD FOR ME ASUS TECHS or even myself did not think to install the EVGA GTX 760 BOARD AND TRY IT. I felt the on board HDMI would work (DUH) and so I would build the PC 1 step at a time (logical step).

Other Thoughts: Hope New EGG blasts ASUS support people--clearly without Newegg ASUS will have a big problem selling MB's.
Also did not get an email or response from ASUS after blasting them. Newegg has been fantastic in doing RMA's etc to help me--but the reality they would not have to if ASUS would step up.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Bruce,

1 out of 5 eggsASUS support is very weak & robotic

Pros: None yet--have not gotten either the 1st or 2nd board to even post.

Cons: I have invested $2750 or so in a system based on this board, and have not gotten it to work yet. ASUS TECH'S APPEAR TO ROBOTS WHO say try this--no try that--no send that back. I have invested so many hours talking to them to no avail. Your memory is not on our list for that board--but it is on G-skills list for that board, So I am sending it back and replacing it again with the 3rd set of memory--and this is the second MB I am on. forced to keep buying more parts and RMA the old stuff. All of the parts I have are very high end tech and price wise--one should not have to go through this. This is not what they advertise. I recently bought a Lenovo Yoga 2 pro laptop that was to be a second machine to this new "hot rod" box I am building. Well the Lenovo is fantastic and just works and may in the end run circle around my Black box build.--perhaps I should have know better than to mess with this project. I clearly did not get what I paid for. I figure they owe me in the neighborhood of $1000,00 in labor credit and grief relief. Cannot believe I paid to go through this nightmare.

Other Thoughts: Be very afraid when attempting to build a black box PC--there are many pit falls, the Tech Support is very wishy washy and they blame others elements for the problems. You are quite on your own. Buy some tranquilizers, and be ready to spend lots of time on the phone unless you get lucky and all goes well from the start. If may be a very long dark road to success.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat MOBO once you can get everything to work

Pros: Easy installation, updating the UEFI BIOS via flash drive was simple after reading through the manual, the Q-clips make insertion of the front panel PWR ON/OFF/Reset/HDD connectors a breeze. The massive number of SATA 6 GB, USB 3.0, and Thunderbolt ports with 2.0 support were a very nice feature, as I wanted something that I could later expand to utilize 4K monitors with better refresh rates. The box came with a lot of extras. (Unfortunately) some which I won't be using since I won't be switching to Windows 8 any time soon, such as the NFC Express Box. The tweaking capabilities available to you via the UEFI BIOS are amazing. I picked up 32 GB of G.Skill Ripjaw memory to compliment my upgrade, as well as a couple of Samsung SSDs. Loading times are quick, and you can adjust multiple Fast Boot settings to make it even quicker. I bought DDR3 1600 memory, and while the board defaulted to 1333, it immediately recognized that I had 1600 installed and let me change the profile, even before the BIOS update.

Cons: I had a lot of issues trying to update the various drivers the allegedly come with the provided driver disk, and going to ASUS's website didn't help matters. The Realtek Audio Chipset drivers were faulty, and I was only able to achieve two channels (on my 5.1 setup) of sound using the drivers supplied on the disk. The updates from ASUS's own site wouldn't work at all. I ended up doing a Google search and found that this was a common issue with ASUS and Realtek Audio drivers going back several generations of MOBOs. I wound up going to Realtek's website and using their drivers instead. I finally got the sound to work for all 5.1 channels and it sounds great.

Other Thoughts: I replaced an INTEL DX58SO2 Board, because I was stuck using old Marvell drivers to handle an older model SSD. I was looking for something that I felt was slightly future proofed in case I want to add a few upgrades down the road. The Thunderbolt 2.0 capability of this board piqued my interest.

Overall, now that I have my system up and running, I'm pretty happy with the MOBO. I was just really frustrated that I couldn't get the audio to work properly until I installed from Realtek's site, not ASUS's.

I have a NVidia GeForce GTX 690 graphic card with Multi-GPU capability, and this MOBO allows me to run games at "Maximum" setting without the bottlenecking and hiccups I was getting from my old MOBO.

3 out of 5 eggsASUS Okay but Known Issues

Pros: The board installed easily and the BIOS settings were easy to navigate. I bough this for the large number of USB 3.0 ports on the back and the ability to plug USB 3.0 from the front of the case and therein lies the problem

Cons: I should have done more research. I bought the board because of the extensive use I make of USB 3.0 devices. I hooked up a brand new Drobo mini to the ports on the back and I continually get a device driver not found message. I plug it into a USB 2.0 port on the back and there is no issue - it sets up (but only with a USB 2.0 channel) I also tried the front ports - same issue. I called Drobo and they went through their trouble shooting process and then had me connect it to another computer with USB 3.0 and the Drobo was immediately recognized. I updated the drivers from and still I can't get the Drobo recognized. Others have made comments about the sound and that seems to be another issue. I get very limited sound out of the front and back audio-out to my ASUS monitor.
