5 out of 5 eggsCannot control 3-pin CPU fan

Pros: Everything is great about this board except...

Cons: It will not control any 3-pin fan plugged into the CPU header, only PWM.

It will control 3-pin fans plugged into either other header. Just an inconvenience I noticed months later.

5 out of 5 eggsVery solid - excellent experience with a modest-end CAD setup

Pros: I've got one of these with a Richland processor set up with a rather expensive CAD video card and 16 Gigs of RAM. It's run superbly for the user. If I had the money I'd obviously take the Xeon workstation route, but it's not being used to design extremely sophisticated product, and I've been very impressed.

As a side note, I've got about 15 A88XM-A boards, which are almost identical, running throughout the office. Not a single failure, device incompatibility issue, etc. No DOAs. Also, it's incredibly easy to update the BIOS. Very pleased.

Cons: Can't really think of any.

Other Thoughts: I'd highly recommend this board for someone who is looking for a moderate-performance system. Do your research, pick good RAM and update the BIOS at your very first power-on.

2 out of 5 eggsBIOS broken

Pros: Latest video driver from ATI doesn't lockup in Linux like my old MSI board did. USB3 works with Toshiba 2TB external drive.

Cons: USB3 doesn't work with Toshiba 1TB external drive. Keeps connecting/disconnecting. BIOS not configurable except with VGA monitor. DVI and HDMI unusable. IOMMU implementation is broken in Linux and has to be disabled. ASUS apparently disowned this board. No links to it anymore on their website. Searching for it finds page with no support info. None. No manual. Nothing.

Other Thoughts: Stable with many things off and no OC. Tried some OC settings, none successful. Board is a little short, so the extra two screw posts in the case to hold up the end of the board where the memory slots aren't doing anything and so putting in memory and the power connectors flexes the board a lot.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Board

Pros: Overclocks great, went up to 4.5Ghz on my 7700k with no issues, the DIGI+ thing is awesome, nice heat sync on the VRMs, supports Crossfire/SLI, rock solid with 2133 memory (G.Skill F3-2133C10D-8GXM).

Cons: Bios takes some figuring out, overclocking from bios is not easy, measures your overclock by how many mhz you are above stock without actually telling you what it "thinks" stock is. I prefer to see the actual clock. Supports Crossfire, but because the 2nd PCI-e slot is so low, I cannot use a second card in my case (N200) (not ASUS's fault)

3 out of 5 eggsFollow-Up: ASUS A88XM-PLUS/CSM Motherboard

Pros: Still stable at DDR-1600 speeds-- no lock-ups or freezes over the past 3 days.

Cons: No true support for G.Skill Ripjaws Z F3-17000CLQ9-16GBZH

Other Thoughts: Follow-up to my previous review:
I went to Asus' support page to verify memory compatibility, and did see the G.Skill Ripjaws Z F3-17000CLQ9-16GBZH was on the list for DDR-2133 support. However, it only supports 1 or 2 DIMM slots, not the 4-slot configuration necessary to make 16GB. Given that the RAM ships with 4-DIMMs, it is somewhat elusive to say the RAM is supported, but only 1/2 of what is bought. Hopefully, a future BIOS update will remedy this situation

3 out of 5 eggsASUS A88XM-PLUS/CSM Motherboard

Pros: BIOS has a nice interface and works with a USB and a mouse, as opposed to other BIOS' on older AM3 motherboards that were still text-based.

MicroUSB, 8 SATA ports (only 3 of which are mounted with ease-of-access).

Plenty of USB ports (for me).

No extra CPU power plug necessary, but the 4-pin connector is a necessity by the CPU (separated from the APX connector). I was able to put away a power cable from the modular SeaSonic X-Series 650W power supply I am re-using

Worked with the A10-7800 with no problems. CPU fan plug is close to the CPU.

4 memory slots (more on this later)

Heat sinks appear to be of good quality.

Cons: Does not seem to have RAID support like the old ASUS board I had-- G4A89GTD Pro/USB3. Although I new this going in, I still liked having BIOS RAID support for my data drives (RAID 1).

Memory does not like to be clocked at DDR2133, even though I have 16GB DDR2133 tested memory (G.Skill Ripjaw Z). It constantly freezes the system if I use D.O.C.P. to adjust from the default DDR1600 to the DDR2133 and timing settings as provided by G.Skill. Downclocking the RAM to DDR1600 seems to make the system stable. I am running the latest BIOS from ASUS, too (updated BIOS on 9/28/2014).

Other Thoughts: Migrated from a ASUS G4A89GTD Pro/USB3 with a Phenom II 555 Black Edition to this APU-based approach to increase speed a bit, get more cores, better graphics, and lower thermals (I do not game enough to want an extra graphics card anymore).

New system is quieter than the old, WINSAT scores are higher, and there is less heat under the desk. All good things. Now, if only the RAM issue gets fixed.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Perfect

Pros: Lots of connectivity options.
Nicely laid out
Wonderful color choices

Cons: Touchy bios, Its well laid out but changing settings like voltages takes some math.
Overclocking options seem kinda pointless since you cant overclock much past your max turbo frequency.

Other Thoughts: The board has quite a lot of potential but the almost complete inability to overclock to anything worthwhile is disappointing.

AMD A8 5600k OC'ed to 4.3 @ 1.35v, Would not go higher without throttling.
AMD A10 7850K OC'ed to 4.1 @ 1.3v, Would not go higher without throttling.

5 out of 5 eggsTech Heaven

Pros: Easy to understand bios. I Love being able to use my mouse to navigate there. My mouse wheel would not scroll the bios screen down but arrow keys where fine to do that. Settings and tweaks and options are why I buy ASUS. Usually you get a computer and a bunch of programs and bloatware you just delete. I installed all the extras and use all of them still. These additions do make it better than the competitors. The QFan feature allowed great tuning of my fan speeds. After it ran my computer went silent. My family kept stopping by to try and hear it..

Cons: Nothing bad yet, they seem good; for what I had expected to receive, quality wise. SATA ports plug in from strange direction, it is more of an irritation than a problem.
Need a usb drive to leave in the computer so bios well save all changes and versions previously employed in testing / refining things.

Other Thoughts: Windows update rekeased yesterday ending in 355 crashed many computers. Mine was one of them. I eventally had to restore a point weeks ago and the issues began again so I reinstalled 8.1 created many restore points in my setup and get it ready stage. I then used Acronis True image 14 to create a single solid backup of all partitions. It also saved all the minor tweaking I had done to the system. Now the backup system is running and task scheduler makes restore point abd registry backup each successfull boot. Updates are off. Hopefully smooth sailing now!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for the 2 builds I have in the field.

Pros: Corporate Stable MB.
I use the dual monitor output.
Easy to set-up.
MemOk! Button.
Units are used at business locations.
One units has been working error free for three and the other unit for six months. Customer is happy with the speed of the units.
Like all ASUS boards I use. I plan to get 5+ years out of if history is any judge.
Good price point.

Cons: Only one PCI slot on the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this MB.
Stay away from all the additional garbage software which comes on the DVD.
Just load the driver software. The simpler you keep things the better the MB(s) will run.
Unless there is good reason or the MB is having problems don't update the BIOS. This can open up a whole can of worms. From what comments I read many people do not know what they are doing when updating a BIOS.
