4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Cheap, plenty of slots. ability to upgrade CPU, and comes with a slick little NFC reader.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Bought as part of a budget gaming rig. I liked the price point and appreciate that I can upgrade the CPU to an i5 or i7 whenever I want.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible item, terrible price.

Pros: The item itself looks gorgeous , the bios is amazing and everything along those lines, you know, what a motherboard is supposed to be.

Cons: This motherboard came with a broken pin for my i5 setup, enough sad, this is ridiculous. This is Newegg, you know, one of the highest rated places for tech gear, and I get shipped something that was clearly broken from the start? Very disappointed.

Other Thoughts: I will most likely buy my motherboards from another retail store, I honestly cannot believe they still have DOA items shipping out to people, it's really not that hard to check.

3 out of 5 eggsSo so...

Pros: Lots of features.
Relatively inexpensive.

Cons: The manual for this motherboard is very poor, especially the BIOS setup section. The whole idea of a manual is to explain the feature in question, not to state that this option enables and disables the feature. Sadly, for most non-standard options in the BIOS setup, you get no help at all. For example, what on earth is "Memory Scrambler?"

The mounting holes on the right side of the board (where the 24 pin power cable is) are not close to the edge of the board or even in line with the power cable. This forces you to put something under the board to prevent it from flexing when plugging in the power cable which is right at the right edge of the board. I don't remember ever seeing a board with this much overhang.

The front panel header is totally non-standard, and the pin spacing is wrong for power LED, so you're going to have to pull that lead apart to connect it.

I'm glad I didn't buy this because of the include NFC Express device, since it only works with Windows 8. That might have been worth mentioning in the description. At least you can use it as a USB 3.0 hub...

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is a good board, and once you carefully install it, it should run fine. The price was right at around $70 after rebate (assuming I get it).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Steve,

I just want to say thank you for making an effort in posting this review. I understand that you're not satisfied and happy with what you saw on the board. There shouldn't be any overhang on the board, did you checked a brand new mother board or a refurbished one. It's unfortunate if you think the "Product" is a huge disappointment. On the contrary, there are lots of very satisfied customers that are having a positive experience using the product. Should you need technical assistance with any ASUS product, please feel free to email me at and put case # N1503101166 in the subject line for your reference.

I'm here to help you and all others with these issues, as our customer loyalty department is dedicated to bringing a resolution for all issues related to our products.

3 out of 5 eggsMy first motherboard

Pros: Great motherboard with good performance. Part of a NewEgg combo on March 19, 2015.

Cons: The motherboard dosen't restart. If you turn it off and on there is no problem but if you do a restart it will turn off but it won't turn on, the lights stay on but it wont boot.

Other Thoughts: This is the first motherboard that I've boght and I'm fine with it. Could have bought a better one for a few more dollars but I decided to buy this one because it was part of a combo that came with 8GB RAM, Intel i5 3.3GHz and the MB for a good price.

The NFC Express is not that great, I only use it for the Quick Log in in Windows 8 and i like that it has 2 x USB 3.0. All the other functions are kinda worthless, I prefer to use Dropbox or Google Drive for backup instead of the NFC. For the Remote Desktop I also prefer to use the Windows built-in instead of the NFC, even if I have to do a little bit of setup.

I haven't bought the Video Card so I don't know if I'll have problems with it, but I had read in another review that it didin't work with the one he had, and i plan to buy a newer one.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We appreciate your effort in posting this review and thank you for using as ASUS product. I understand that the motherboard won't boot up once you restart it. I want to apologize for the inconvenience this issue has caused you. I want to help this issue. I just want to confirm that if you manually turn on the board, it's okay, It's doing a successful POST (power on self test). Try removing the CMOS then do a restart and check if it will boot up. Once you remove the cmos and the board still won't do a boot up from restart, then try reinstalling your OS system. For further assistance or if you want to discuss this matter with me, please feel free to email me at and put case # N1503101374 in the subject line for your reference.

4 out of 5 eggsVideo card issue resolved - no help from ASUS Tech support

Pros: Low price, good performance, part of a NewEgg combo deal on March 3, 2015

Cons: ASUS Tech support handled my case poorly. I resolved it on my own, after wasting time and effort contacting them.

First level of tech support (named Antony X.) tried to tell me my card was incompatible, go buy one from this (very short and old) list of approved cards. After I replied that this was ridiculous, and I provided some troubleshooting steps that gained me partial success, Antony said he would escalate my support case. We went back and forth with some additional troubleshooting steps, but nothing worked. He then closed my case without escalating and passing me on to the next level of support, and without telling me via email - I had to search their web site to find out!

First-level support shouldn't try to shut down the case immediately with "not on our approved list of devices." And when they commit to escalate a support request, they should manage a hand-off to the next level of tech support!

Through additional troubleshooting, I discovered that a better Seasonic 650W 80Plus Gold power supply (single 12V rail) boots the system flawlessly. My original OCZ 600W 80 Plus power supply (two 12V rails) apparently doesn't handle the power-up correctly. I can boot with the OCZ by unplugging PCIe 6-pin connector from my GeForce 650Ti Boost card when pressing power switch, then plugging it back in about 2 seconds later.

I didn't suspect the power supply, since the same card worked great in a Core 2 Duo PC with only a Corsair 450W power supply. 600W should be plenty. Perhaps it's the split 12V rails, and with the card in place the motherboard isn't able to draw enough current in the first 1-2 seconds of the cold-boot process.

Anyway, I hope this troubleshooting info is helpful to others, and I hope ASUS improves their tech support experience! I've been happy with them in the past, through several motherboards, video cards, and laptops.

Other Thoughts: TL;DR; - ASUS Tech Support was no help in diagnosing failure to boot reliably with GeForce 650Ti Boost video card. Owner fix the problem himself.

1 out of 5 eggsRe-writing review

Pros: Initially worked fine.

Cons: Put in a second stick of ram and computer hangs at post screen. Support said that it was a corrupted bios, and an RMA has been started.

3 out of 5 eggsTo review below Brian S.

Pros: Message to reviewer Brian S.
Did you try updating the bios? Suggesting for you is to updating the UFEI and the bios both. I had problem with ASUS MOB with Intel Anniversary CPU. I updated the bios only and not the UFEI. The MOB will not post. I return the CPU thinking it was bad. Second CPU won't post. Then try updating UFEI and BIOS then it posted. Download the latest bios that incude the UFEI and bios. Install the UFEI update and then update bios. Hope this help.

Cons: None. No where on ASUS website say you need to update UFEI. So only updated BIOS but CPU won't POST.

2 out of 5 eggsOnly "qualified" video cards are supported???

Pros: Low price, good performance, part of a NewEgg combo deal on March 3, 2015

Cons: Would not boot with my mainstream video card purchased May of 2013:
PNY GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB (NewEgg item #N82E16814133487)

Submitted a tech support request via ASUS web site, waited 2 days for a response.
"We'd love to help! Unfortunately, your video card is incompatible. Pick a different video card from this list of compatible devices."
(search Google for this file: Z87-A_Devices_QVL_0704.pdf)

That Qualified Vendor List includes 14 ASUS-brand Nvidia GeForce cards and 3 specific Nvidia GeForce cards from other brands. Clearly, very few builds actually use cards on that list.

I can't believe ASUS would hide behind a Qualified Vendor list - that's ridiculous! My card supports PCI Express 3.0 x16, and they claim to support PCI Express 3.0 x16 as well on two of their three x16 slots.

I've replied to their initial email asking for actual assistance. We'll see if they come through.

Since I can't post a link to their "Qualified Vendor List" for this MB, I'll paste in the list of video cards they apparently will provide technical support for:

AMD Radeon
ASUS EAH5550/DI/HM512D3/V2
ASUS HD7850-DC2T-2GD5-DI2S(C403)
MAXSUN HD5670/512M/DDR5(HM1024M)
Maxsun HD6450/1024MB/64bit/GDDR3

AMD FirePro
ATI FireProV3700/256M
ATI FireProV5700/512M
ATI FireProV4800/1024M
ATI FireProV5900/2048M
ATI FireProV8700/1024M

nVidia GeForce
ASUS EN210/DI/512MD2/A
ASUS ENGT520/DI/1GD3 R1.01
EVGA 250GTS512MX16
Gigabyte GV-N450-1GI

Note that each had a specific BIOS version number listed beside the model number. Given how their tech support is applying this list, it's likely they would refuse to help if your card's BIOS doesn't exactly match the version listed.

Other Thoughts: More technical details - based on these troubleshooting steps, it looks like a bug in the BIOS POST code.

No PCIe video card - connect to motherboard / Intel integrated video - boots fine.

Swap in GeForce 650Ti Boost - POST locks at CPU check (CPU diagnostic light on), no video from any video port.

Remove card, connect to motherboard / Intel integrated video - boots fine.

Swap in a Sapphire Flex Radeon HD5670 - boots fine!

Power down, immediately swap in the GeForce 650Ti Boost - boots fine!
Reboot - boots fine!
Suspend / wake up - works great!

Shut down, leave off for several minutes.
Cold boot with GeForce 650Ti Boost still installed - POST locks at CPU check (CPU diagnostic light on), no video from any video port.

Power down
Swap in a Sapphire Flex Radeon HD5670 - boots fine!
Power down, immediately swap in the GeForce 650Ti Boost - boots fine!

So, if I'm willing to pop open the case and swap cards every time I have to shut down, it looks like I can use my GeForce 650Ti card. Otherwise, I have to buy an "approved" card, use built-in video or my old Sapphire Radeon card, or return the motherboard for a refund (if Newegg is willing).

I wonder how long the PCIe slot will last with repeated card swaps...
