2 out of 5 eggsNice board. Unreliable. Customer support = Questionable.

Pros: Perfect form factor for HTPC build. Onboard mSATA and mini pcie reduces interconnect cables. 12VDC power supply.

Cons: Bought it in July 2015, I installed Crucial 4GBx2 RAM modules and an i3-4170, and Win7-64. The setup works just fine from the start. Four months later, the system no longer boot. Power it on, the fan spins for about 3 seconds then shut down. Then starts the same cycle again. I take out the top RAM module, it boots fine. I swap the RAM modules, still boots fine. As soon as I installed the top module, the system does not boot. Plug in another set of RAM, does not boot, remove the top module, it boots. The solid conclusion is the stop RAM socket screws up.
Now the fun part. I logon the ASUS web site/Support to fill out a tech support ticket. I fully expect that serial#, model#, along with name, email, address, phone# should be included. The page also sals for board version#, BIOS version#. I have no problem with providing serial# and model#, it printed on the box and MB. Board version# and BIOS version#, where to find it. (these two version# MUST BE FILLED IN, according to ASUS web site). Luckily, the web site provides a link of How to find Motherboard Revision?. I click on the link, it takes me to and EMPTY instruction. What???
The story does not end yet. Also the BIOS Version is required, a must provided. There is a link too. How to find Motherboard BIOS Revision? Same thing, click on it, go to an EMPTY instruction.

I don't expect this frustration just to fill out the support request. C'mon ASUS, you're such a big company now and trying to compete at the international level. Or too big to care now?

Other Thoughts: In fact, I bought two of this mb. The other one failed to output video signal to the on board HDMI output. I have to settle with the DVI connector. Two boards, both failed to perform what it suppose to do.

How is the quality control at ASUS?
How does ASUS value the customer loyalty?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. Here at ASUS we are committed to solving customer issues. I will let the related department know about the missing/empty links when trying to create a tech support ticket. What's the model/serial number of your RAM you are attempting to install? Please note, using DIMMs not supported in our Qualified Vendors List will most likely cause stability issues. You can update your BIOS to the latest Version (0803) on our support website, and if you need assistance with that I can assist you along the way. My email is and you can use N151138386 as reference to your case.

Thank you for choosing ASUS!

Best Regards,
ASUS Customer Loyalty - US Support

5 out of 5 eggsASUS Mini PC

Pros: Was just about to give in and buy a Mac Mini when I started researching about these thin itx boards. Bought the ASUS H81T/CSM paired it with the Intel i3-4130T and it came out exactly what I wanted . . . Now I have this nice small little box sitting under a very large monitor (HP Envy 32) and this little box can run the monitor at 2560x1440 at 60hrz no problem . . . Movies are looking really good!

Even they are more expensive, I would highly recommend an mSata as the primary HD. If more storage is needed, there is room for an addition internal 2.5" drive plus there is always the 3Gb/s eStata port on the MoBo

If you are no into gaming and would like an "old fashioned" desktop, this is the way to go.

Cons: So far there aren't any problems

Other Thoughts: The build:

ASUS ASUS H81T/CSM, thin itx
Intel i3-4130T
Memory: HyperX sodimm 1.35v 8gig
Primary HD: Patriot Pyro M3 mSATA 240gig ssd
Secondary HD: Samsung Evo 840 240gig
Case: Silverstone PT13
Cooler: Silverstone AR04

5 out of 5 eggsMedium-budget Tiny Build - Works Great!

Pros: *Everything worked out of the box (even accepted my Haswell CPU no problem).
*I really enjoy high-speed transfers between this board and my SSD's (don't know the details, but it's fast)
*Ditto for thumb drives with the 3.0 USB

Cons: One of the two antenna connector wires that came with my wifi-bluetooth card (Intel below) won't reach the back of my case due to the socket placement.
Nothing else.

Other Thoughts: No heat issues.

My build:
Asus H81T
Intel Haswell Core i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz
G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 F3-10600CL9D-8GBSQ
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB
Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth 4.0 Mini PCI Express combo Adapter - 867
EVERCOOL EC-HPS-810CP Low profile CPU cooler

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little board woth my i5 4460 haswell

Pros: Extremly slim, i was jamming this in a old school nintendo and its one of the slimmer intel mini itx i could find

Power supply im using is a external laptop type charger 150w 7.4x5mm dell. Works great

Works great with my intel haswell refresh which ive heard is sketchy but my 4460 i5 worked no problem out of the box

Cons: I dont have any experience building computers and asus tech wasnt much help in turning me the right way in a direct answer to a compatible psu.

Everything is working great and even the bios are quite nice.

Other Thoughts: The i5 cpu fan is the biggest factor in it being able to fit in my case

5 out of 5 eggsNow works with Haswell Refresh

Pros: One of the cheapest Thin Mini-ITX boards you can get. Asus makes good boards and has an awesome BIOS and utilities for controlling the fan and overclocking, etc. My board came pre-flashed with version 0503 - which is not the latest, but supports most all of the Haswell Refesh CPUs. Board has all the basics, and if your looking at doing an AIO build or stuffing this into a tiny case, it's a good choice.

Cons: Based on the reviews here, I bought an extra CPU cheap be ready to flash the BIOS. Totally not necessary, and I'll need to sell it now.

Other Thoughts: Just remember this is a basic board without a lot of bells and whistles. Previous reviewer gave great recommendation on a power supply (BESTEK 90W 19V 4.74A) - I got the same one and it works great.

1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible with i5-4590S

Pros: This board has all the pros of the thin mini-ITX form-factor with all the features needed for an HTPC or desktop PC. It's priced in the same range as other mini-ITX motherboards which means in the end it comes out cheaper because all that's needed for a power supply is an AC adapter (19V 7.4mm * 5.0mm tip).

Cons: Even after updating the BIOS to 0602 this motherboard will not boot to the BIOS with an i5-4590S installed. I tried two different CPUs and two different H81T/CSM motherboards with the same results. I also tried earlier versions of the BIOS. The i5-4590S is on the QVL as of version 0503. This has become a very expensive project as a result of having to buy two CPUs and two motherboards to figure out the issue and it definitely the motherboard. Inserting an i3-4130 and G3220 it boots up no problem.

Other Thoughts: Don't try to run a Haswell Refresh CPU on this motherboard. Despite being advertised to work with the newer CPUs if you update the BIOS, it doesn't work and you will be out your money unless you're actually able to get a refund. It works great with the i3-4130 and G3220 though.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Board, Bad BIOS

Pros: This board came at a good price and does everything you need for a thin mini-itx board.

Cons: This board comes with the 0210 version of the BIOS which is NOT compatible with Haswell refresh processors. I at first tried with an i5-4590. It would turn on and the fans would spin but nothing showed up on screen and it didn't have any beep codes. So I concluded that I had gotten a bad board. After I did an RMA to Newegg and got the new one and it did the same thing, I had to scratch my head a little. ASUS site recommends a BIOS update for the newer processors but does not mention that a BIOS update is completely necessary for it to function! Considering that there is no major architectural change on the new processors it seems odd that it wouldn't work at least a little bit so someone can flash the BIOS with an update. So, in a nutshell here's the problem: If you get a Haswell refresh processor there is absolutely no way to update the BIOS to make it work unless you have another processor to use just to flash the BIOS. I like the board and nothing against ASUS but this was kind of frustrating to put it mildly.

Other Thoughts: It's a good board and I only knocked an egg because of something that probably just a result of my ignorance but was still pretty frustrating. I wanted to make sure others were aware that this will not work with the newer processors without the BIOS update so you will need to make sure you have a processor that will work with the 0209 version of the BIOS so that you can update it to run a newer processor. I purchased this board to build an all in one and realized in the process of figuring this all out that the cooling solution on the all in one chassis ' are usually only rated to handle a 65W TDP processor so I ended up getting an i5-4570S and am now stuck with an extra processor I don't know what to do with.
