5 out of 5 eggsReally Nice Motherboard

Pros: 12 Phase Power (compared to 8 phase on the Z97-A).

Better cooling than the Z97-A.

This motherboard is more comparable to my Maximus VII Hero than a Z97-A.

Works nicely with G-Skill Trident-X 2400MHz (must set XMP profile in BIOS obviously).

Screamin fast with an i7 4790K.

Has been rock solid stable (ran folding@home for 72 hours continuous for initial burn in).

Onboard audio is OK. However, as with any build, I recommend a standalone audio card if you are serious about audio in any way (dropped in a SoundBlaster X-Fi Fal1ty and it completely annihilates this onboard audio).

Good looking board

The list goes on, but you get the point.

Cons: No cons, however:

Plugging in my older Lite-On Blu-Ray burner seems to cause major stability issues under Win 10 PTR. Not sure if the drive is bad, Windows 10 is broken (still in public test), or if the drive is not compatible with this board in some way (tried every SATA port except the Asmedia, as they only support data drives, not ROM). Have not had time to get to the bottom of this yet so cannot deduct an egg as otherwise this board is rock solid.

Other Thoughts: Originally purchased the Z97-A but it arrived with two bad memory slots (both B-channels), so decided to get this instead and extremely happy that I did!

Newegg tech support was very helpful in getting an RMA on the Z97-A, no problems at all.

If you trying to decide whether you want this board or the Z97-A, you will want this board. It is difficult to tell the difference between them when comparing the specs and pics, but after having held both of them you don't even need to look closely to see how much better this board is built (see also the pros listed).

This board has been stable for a week now, has been unplugged from the wall several times (so the various slots could be populated and tested) and everything works perfect.

As with any new build, started out with nothing but the CPU and RAM installed, booted with the onboard video and used this environment to update the BIOS to the latest build, then set the XMP profile for the RAM (in that order). Afterwards plugged in one component at a time before installing Windows. Smooth all the way through.

+rep to Newegg tech support for being so awesome about the Z97-A return (so simple, no hassles)

+rep to Newegg tech support for being up front about the RMA turnaround time (helped me decide to return the Z97-A and purchase this motherboard to avoid having to wait)

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: none

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: I purchased a motherboard(ASUS Z97-PRO LGA 1150) from Newegg which was to be a "special purchase" and seemed like a good deal
until I got the item and it was totally dead. So I returned it and received a new one and everything looked good until
I found out that Newegg would not reimburse me for shipping to, and from the store. So the supposedly good deal
turned out not to be a good deal at all because all the savings were consumed by the shipping and handling charges.
Needless to say, I am very disappointed with my purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsThis is supposed to be a good mobo?

Pros: It looks good on paper.

Cons: Built a brand new machine around this mobo, all new components. Installed Win7 x64. Installed all mobo drivers, including the Intel Ethernet drivers. No networking. Ethernet card gives me a Code (10). Googled Code(10), found almost nothing useful. Got latest drivers from Intel, reinstalled Ethernet card drivers, still Code(10). Reinstalled Windows from scratch. Reinstalled all drivers. Didn't fix anything, still Code(10).

Was installing Win7 off a USB3.0 memory stick. While I was trying to get the ethernet fixed, the two USB ports I was using with memory sticks stopped working. Checked a few other ports, total of 4 USB ports don't appear to work now. All of these are on the motherboard, not the front of the case, so I couldn't have messed up the connections. I know they worked before.

Called ASUS. Was on hold for 68 minutes before someone picked up and then hung up on me. Frustrated and angry now. Called back. ASUS gives you the option of leaving a message and they'll call you back. Tried to pick that, was told mailbox full and it hung up on me again. Calling back now, but getting VERY frustrated.

I have a ton of ASUS components all over my house. Monitors, networking equipment, components in my PCs. If this is the level of support you get when you have a problem, then I don't think I want to buy another ASUS component ever again!

Other Thoughts: No matter how good this mobo looks on paper, if it's not working, and more pieces of it start failing as I try to fix the first issue, then why am I even bothering? Going to call NewEgg and see what I can do about returning this and getting another mobo from a different manufacturer.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsI may have made a mistake buying this

Pros: Seems to do the basic things well. Automatic overclocking of a 4790K took it to 4.6Ghz on a H100i. Pretty respectable I guess.

Cons: I'm not sure. So far the remote keyboard/mouse app is too slow to use. Other features still not working to comment on.

Other Thoughts: Tech support is painful.

First had an issue with it recognizing usb keyboard/mouse. Rebooting a few times seemed to fix it.

The only way to install drivers is from the DVD software, so if you have no optical drive, you'll have to find a computer that has one, since they don't offer this software for download, and copy it to a usb drive.

You also have to update bios via usb in order to use this software, so the EZ Update seems like something that's nice, but I'll never use it since you have to update BIOS in order to install it.

DVI audio is a bios setting, and is off from the factory, which took a call. Fair enough.

Now the app integration. The keyboard/mouse app is horribly delayed. Granted, you're controlling over the network, but the delay is much more than I'd expect considering the speed of other network based keyboard/mouse control options, and even with the sensitivity and speed maxed, the track pad only moves the cursor a small amount, so going from one edge of the screen to the other is quite the adventure. This app, to me, is unuseable.

The Remote Desktop seems like it might be a better option (since I'd like to use this for a media pc, and sit on a couch with an iPad). The Remote Go! app doesn't work though. The iPad just shows that it's looking to connect, and the PC just sends a push notification that doesn't do anything other than send a message to the iPad. So I called tech support. Which is why I have time to write this. I was asked on Sunday to call back (before even asking a question). Ok. So now I'm calling back on Wednesday. Rep hung up on me. 20min to get back to an operator. I'm now dealing with someone who claims not to be grumpy but merely sick. So I asked to talk to someone who isn't sick, no go. I'm stuck with grumpy. I hope she doesn't hang up on me again. So far, she's telling me you can't use the Remote Go! remote desktop without a HomeCloud account. Really? On the same network? I think she needs some tea.

No, she came back. Yes, you can do this on the same network without logging into ASUS HomeCloud. Except the app doesn't connect, which is why I'm calling.

We spend a couple minutes clarifying that iOS 8.1 is in fact "iOS7 or later". Now she says I need to update BIOS, but the EZ Update (which I never thought I'd use) says there are no updates available, but she says there is. She's checking on this.

She's confused about how networking works, I'm on hold for the "specialist". She needs to blow her nose.

He's not available, but he can call me back. Her solution is to return the motherboard. I'm fairly sure she's the same person two weeks ago (when I found out about the DVD software thing) who suggested I return the PC to B*st B*y. I kid you not.

So I'm not fixing this today. Too bad too, because I just spent 1.5hrs just to get a call back. I hope I'm home when he calls.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board

Pros: This board worked right out of the box. Didn't need a BIOS update or anything. The manual had all the answers to the few questions that I had when plugging everything in. I liked that it had connectors for all 4 of the case fans I've got and they're spaced around the board so I really don't have many wires coming across it.

I really haven't changing anything in the BIOS but just looking at it I've found it offers all the information I'd want and presents it very clearly. I imagine if I do want to start changing anything it will be very easy.

Cons: The only con I've got is that it doesn't support the higher ram speeds without overclocking. I didn't take a star off of this because when I checked on the specifications here on NewEgg I saw that it told me that I'd have to overclock for higher speeds. I won't hold the fact that I failed to read it against Asus, so I'm not taking off an egg.

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate - ASUS Z97-PRO Motherboard

Pros: Replaced the ASUS Z97-PRO with a MSI Z97 PC MATE and unit has been working fine.

Cons: ASUS has decided to return the defective board without repairing. Tell me if the CPU pin was the problem then why did it run fine for over a month. I have assembled a number of units prior to this and a number of units since with only a recent DOA HX750 PSU.

Other Thoughts: Barebone Purchase from Newegg components are listed below:

Intel Core i7-4790K Haswell Quad-Core 4.0GHz LGA 1

ASUS Z97-PRO LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s US

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Board

Pros: Excellent out of the box stability with shipping BIOS. I had ZERO issues. I've been running everything on this system for 6 months, no problems at all.

Cons: The only bad thing is the Asus bloatware. Do not install it! It provides little and it's buggy. I had some minor annoyances that vanished after removing ALL of the Asus crapware. There are much better free utilities on the web for performing the same.

Other Thoughts: Most of the bad reviews are given by dolts. I've been building computers for 25 years and the comments I've read by most of the negative nancy's are due to their incompetence.

This is a solid motherboard if you use the right hardware with it. Most importantly, buy a good power supply.

1 out of 5 eggsASUS Z97 -PRO Motherboard

Pros: Worked well for a Month

Cons: Have a problem with a Z97 pro MB which worked for over a month and then died, when I sent it back to ASUS for repairs they claim that the CPU pins was the issue and that placed it out of warranty. And they wanted me to pay more to repair it than the initial purchase price, a bunch of dishonorable thieves, I have purchase a number of ASUS product in the past but NEVER again.

1 out of 5 eggsHang on device scan

Pros: Good, if it didn't hang on device scan, Windows Update, or going into BIOS.

Cons: Hate writing bad reviews, but costs for 2 RMA...enough.
Did clean installed of Win8.1, installed network driver from Asus site then installed Firefox to browse web sites. Decided to bring up Device Manager and scan for new devices, and hangs. Had to hit physical power button. Booted Win8.1 back up and do Windows Update and hang. Had to hit physical power button. Went into BIOS and hang. Had to hit power button again.

Decided to go backrev Windows....so installed clean Win7pro then network driver, works fine...can surf websites. Decide to do Device Manager scan for device and hang.
