1 out of 5 eggsSomething Just not Right

Pros: Looks nice... Decent software. Lots of features.

Cons: Board just doesnt act right. Have tested every other part all checks out system specs are as follows.
i7 4790k
Asus Z97-Pro
Evga 850 G2 80 gold
780ti dual classified
G.Skill Tridents

During use in windows 7 64 it is very sluggish, windows will skip & Trail when moving. Opening programs is VERY very slow. Just a faulty Or very bad performing motherboard. Will try a few more things then RMA back to Newegg.

Other Thoughts: On a side not my previous build was an ASUS Z77 V LK and I had to RMA 2 boards before I got my computer to work. So I am guessing ASUS is just outsourcing their boards and their quality has REALLY dipped over the years after I RMA this board i am going to try a different brand. Never had an issue with EVGA and I think i should go that route.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Disappointed

Pros: Very attractive board. Looks quality but... RMA

Cons: Quality doesn't compare to the old ASUS boards where you got a lot of "extras" thrown in. ASUS used to be the clear premium boards. Now, not so much.

Other Thoughts: Would not POST. Memory LED stayed red. I had F!@'s do a diagnostic and the memory slots were bad. Bought an ASUS Sabertooth MK 2 at Fr!@s to replace, and it was bad too.
I thought the odds of getting 2 bad boards from ASUS were unlikely, until I saw that 20% of the reviews were from RMA's. The percentage for other manufacturers is about the same. But, somehow, I expected better from ASUS.

5 out of 5 eggsASUS Z97-PRO

Pros: Sold, stable, and tons of OC features.

Cons: I was planning to install 6 HDDs (3 X RAID0) with ATAPI and hot swap SDD dock . . . could not do because of ASMedia. ASMedia SATA ports only support data drives (no RAID) - I wish I could use these for ATAPI device. Not the fault of ASUS, however.

Other Thoughts: Absolutely no hassle - good quality board.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointed Asus Fan

Pros: Too early to tell.

Cons: This board has serious problems with its fan headers. I installed this board in an Antec Nine Hundred case. This case has three 120mm case fans and one 140mm case fan.

I installed the 140mm case fan on the CHA3_FAN header. The header provided appropriate power to the fan as it worked fine but the fan speed reported in the BIOS ranged from 560rpm to 11800rpm. It kept trying to bounce back and forth. I plugged the 140mm fan into the CPUOPT_FAN header and the BIOS reported the correct speed, around 420rpm. I also plugged a 120mm fan into CHA3_FAN and the BIOS reported the correct speed. So for some reason the CHA3_FAN header just could not deal with the 140mm fan.

The other problem I had with this board was that when the board lost power (i.e. when I unplugged it for a few minutes) and then power was restored the CHA1_FAN header would not detect the 120mm fan that was installed and the 120mm fan would not spin up, basically it did not get power. This only happened the first time that the PC was booted after having lost power. Every time it was booted after that the 120mm fan on CHA1_FAN was correctly detected and successfully powered up. Until the PC lost power again. Then the fan would not be detected and would not spin up.

I opened a couple of support cases on the ASUS website and spoke to one of their online technicians and he said he had not heard of any problems like this and that I should RMA the board. Since I had only gotten it from New Egg a couple of days before I decided to return it to New Egg instead. Thank you New Egg!!!!

So I figured I must have gotten unlucky with that board so I went out and bought another one at a local retailer for substantially more money only to have the exact same problem with that board.

I even flashed both boards with the latest BIOS, 1304, and still had the same problems.

I used to think of ASUS as the Rock of Gibraltar when it came to motherboards but after this experience I worry about what else is messed up on these Z97 boards. Not sure what I am going to do, I guess I will take a look at some Z97 boards from other manufacturers.

Other Thoughts: Not sure what happened with these boards. I used to be able to count on ASUS.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat board, few quirks still working out

Pros: Nice features, very purdy looking

Cons: annoying long post times (issue I am trying to resolve stil)

Other Thoughts: new system, i7 4790k cpu, 16gb ram, supernova 1000 ps, r9 290 gpu. takes 5 to 10 seconds to post.. shows post screen fine, then goes blank for 30 seconds to 3 minutes, then will boot into windows and work normally. Trying to find bios setting or something to what is causing this. Using latest bios as of today.

4 out of 5 eggsAsus Great, NE sucks

Pros: Solid board, easy set up, everything works on this one. went together quick and booted straight away. Just be sure to check rev number: 6030 bios will need to be flashed to support 4790K devils canyon Cpu's.

Cons: 1st board rec'd wouldn't post. Q code 76. Even contacted Asus support to troubleshoot. Could not correct problem. Not really a big deal...unless you need to RMA it...See below.

Other Thoughts: Do not RMA your board to Asus. They will just say you bent the Cpu socket pins and expect you to pay full price for a new one...or offer 10% off if you argue. Argue enough and you might get promised a little more off a purchase, but only after you pay full price initially, then wait around for them to reimburse your CC or or PP Still waiting after 7 days for this to actually happen, even though customer service emailed me in writing it would happen.

Don't expect any emails to customer service to be answered either. Two sent reply after 9 days.

Used to be very pleased with NE once upon a time ...Not anymore. Recommend NOT buying MB, or Cpu's from NE if for any reason you need to return them You're hosed. I now own a great $170.00 MB that only cost me $310.00 in the end..Thanks NE =/

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product!

Pros: Straightforward installation and setup
Easy to diagnose issues
Quite a few features that allow for heavy customization/overclocking

Cons: Documentation is a bit deceptive

Other Thoughts: I tried to remove one of my memory sticks from its slot using the method described in the manual (undo the clip, pull the memory straight out), but the non-clipped side of the stick wouldn't remove. Especially confusing because I inserted the stick by pushing it straight down. Turns out that there's a one-way metal clip that keeps the memory in, so you have to undo the manual clip and kind of pivot the memory out of the slot.

This isn't a fault of the motherboard, just a documentation oversight and user error. The documentation really should be corrected, though.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat mother board

Pros: Very easy to use for OC. I have the i7-4770K paired with this board and after a few minutes it is up to 4.3GHz.

I am using this MOB for transcoding video (which uses the full system resources). I have tested this setup transcoding videos for 6+hrs straight and not one issue thus far. So far very pleased.

Cons: None

3 out of 5 eggsASUS Pro-Pain

Pros: This is a follow-up from my previous review.
I had No idea that this motherboard had so many picky nuances. Sure it is a nice MoBo and has many Excellent Features. The 5 Way Optimization is great and the BIOS with Mouse support and Graphics is just superb. The colors of Gold and Black look Great.
There are many qualities that make this motherboard a MoBo you would like to own, but this is where it ends. Now you must read the Cons to find out what you are Really in for when trying to do some tweaking or other supposedly featured functions they point out on this Motherboard. Should have just been more prudent and read many more Forums and Reviews before buying this Black and Gold Pretty Brick.

Cons: What a load -
When you want to RAID the book specifies the Control 'I' function after setting the proper switches in the BIOS to RAID will appear.
Surprise Surprise - that function Does Not Appear - at least Not on this MoBo. Then you cannot load the software (Windows 7 Pro 64 bit) in RAID 1 mirror mode. It wants you to pick out the drivers from a Flash Drive or the CD but you can't do it.
Re-Booting does not help - Slowing down the Boot to 5 or more seconds thinking you had it pass you by is not any help either.
I wanted this board because of the extra SATA ports, but Guess what - Those are ASmedia driven ports and Not Intel Controller driven. The ASmedia are just data ports so don't even think about using them for an Optical Drive. The Boot area that should show all the drives does not do it all the time - sometimes yes sometimes no - Sure you can find them in the PCH Storage Configuration and also under the Boot Menu, but not on the Main Window under Boot Selection - Not all of the drives show up ALL the time - sometimes Yes and Sometimes No.
Then it will just switch the boot drive to another drive for no reason when you do any changes in the Bios.
I bought 5 ASUS Z97-A boards and have not had any of these troubles. I did not try and RAID any drives for the customers i assembled them for though. So i don't know if this is a problem that is related to the Whole Family of ASUS Z97 boards.
I have tried many different variations of settings to get this board to do what it is supposed to do, but it just acts like it has a mind of it's own.
I have read many Forums and Posts and their are many people having issues with the RAID - Ctrl-i not appearing and then out of the blue after 10 tries it just magically will appear.
So i have just dropped the RAIDing of Drives in Mirror Mode as i also found out that if one drive crashes you cannot just RAID a new drive to the existing one copying all the information onto it.
I am running a PC-DL with 6 Drives on it 2 SATAS in RAID 1 mode and did have one drive crash and just bought a new drive and after pressing Ctrl-i it asked for a Source Drive and Target Drive in RAID 1 (Security Mode) and it just copied the information to the New Drive and was back on line with RAID 1 was back in Operational Mode with Zero issues.
As far as using the ASmedia SATA ports i just did not even attempt using those at all again. They seem flaky at best being supported by a Third Party from all i have read they are also slower than Intel SATA ports.
So good luck with your MoBo - AND - No - Updating the Bios is not the answer either because i tried that also. It is just the way ASUS has configured the Ports with Intel or Intel forcing ASUS and others to do this weird setup. I have been at this for 3 days trying everything i know and having others help that built many many systems over the years and they are just as freaked out by the way this controller setup is done as me.

Other Thoughts: I have been a Faithful ASUS Motherboard supporter and user sense 1989 when i built my first 286 and all of the predecessors MoBo's performed Unmatched in stability and Functionality, but now i have my doubts with ASUS being like they used to be - Unmatched.
Even the SATA ports are so hard to get to being turned 90 degrees on the motherboard in almost every PC case it is just really some serious engineering blunders. It really is a challenge to get the cables (latching types) not to come loose. They wiggle and seem weak - or frail - just not the Quality i am used to seeing from ASUS.
Oh well i bought this Bad-Lad and will use it as is. It does work in just a Standard Mode no RAID and does over-clock well and stable, but it has some real quarks that need to be addressed and i doubt that a New Improved Bios Update is going to fix all this - this mess.
