5 out of 5 eggsBest Z97 board for the price

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Works great, has recognized everything I've tried plugging into it. Tonnes of options in the BIOS, I've probably not explored them all.
Seems to have all the bells and whistles for overclocking, although I've not gone too much into that besides playing with the core and cache frequencies. Has 4 PWM fan headers (which run non-PWM fans just fine) and two CPU fan headers (great for plugging in coolers with two fans and having them both controlled the same way). Can be controlled from the AI Suite software in Windows, or directly in the BIOS, which is handy.
By default it applies the Turbo multiplier to all 4 of my 4790K's cores, which apparently not all motherboards do (I read that some only apply it to a single core at a time). Another thing it does that Intel says is impossible is let you run both an onboard iGPU and at least one discrete GPU at once, great for adding more monitors than your discrete GPU allows.
The description only says it has 4x SATA ports, but there are actually 6: Two are designed to be part of the SATA Express port, I suppose. I'm not sure if you can use all 6 at once as I've never gotten around to testing, but it doesn't seem to care which ports are used so at the very least you have some room to alter where things are plugged in.
Had it running for almost 2 years without any issues.

Cons: None that come to mind. Some people have complained about this model's color scheme but my PC is fully enclosed so I don't care if it doesn't match the curtains.

Other Thoughts: Would definitely recommend that anyone who is considering getting a much more expensive motherboard take a good long look at this one first before deciding. I can't imagine ever needing anything fancier.

4 out of 5 eggsGood

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Good speeds nice design overall pretty good value

Cons: The RAM and other components of the motherboard are a little closer than you'd like to the Processor, makes it kind of hard to install some of the aftermarket CPU coolers.

Other Thoughts: Overall the best MOBO in the 100-150 price range

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, and easy to setup

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Great sound and system setup.

Cons: Don't know if PCI slot has an issue as I can't get an answer from board or PCI card manufacturer, or Newegg. Due to issues with wireless card, I would suggest buying the board with built in wireless.

3 out of 5 eggsgreat board, REBATE IS A SCAM!

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: great board, went together and worked on the first shot. everything is very intuitive and the things runs fast

Cons: i took the time and effort to fill out the rebate info. filled out the online form, printed a form, put my ups, invoice andevything asked for, sent it cerified. THEN I GET AN EMAIL STATING THAT THEY NEVER RECEIVED ANY OF THE 3 REBATES I MAILED IN. THIS IS A SCAM!! AND MANUFACTUERERS LIKE ASUS AND THERMALTAKE DONT CARE ONE IOTA THAT THERE CUSTOMERS ARE GETTING RIPPED OFF BY A REBATE SCAM COMPANY IN TEXAS

Other Thoughts: THE REBATE COMPANY HANDLING ALL THE CLAIMS FOR ASUS AND THERMALTAKE IS A TOTAL SCAM

5 out of 5 eggsClearly a higher-end product

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: - Plug and play LAN with Windows 10, nice not to have to bootstrap that with a drive.
- Impressive BIOS and tweaking utilities.
- Dead simple overclocking. My mother could probably overclock this system without frying it.
- Front panel block! I love these things. Great for sausage fingers.

Cons: - The SATA ports. Oh dear, the SATA ports.
- Board arrived bent, concave. Was crossing my fingers during install.
- Boot error LEDs are nice, but not terribly visible nor intuitive in my rig. I'd rather have a seven-segment display in a corner or even speaker error codes.
- I/O shield didn't fit great, but are there any that really do?

Other Thoughts: I don't usually buy the higher-end motherboards but this one was on sale plus had a mail-in rebate. I didn't know system tweaking had gotten to this level of detail--if Newegg still did reviewer tech levels I would have docked myself a point. To give you an idea of how impressed I was, this is the first motherboard install I've done where I needed to connect my mouse for the BIOS. Power saving features in the software are also neat. Maybe this board will pay for itself in electricity costs in 20 years.

I'll cover my primary complaint, though, and that's the SATA ports. For whatever reason, they aren't vertical. They face away from the end of the board, opposite the I/O. If my hard drive bay was just a couple of millimeters closer, I'd be shopping for special angled SATA cables right now. One of my cables had a connector that was too long, but fortunately one of the included cables fit. Quite the challenge getting them installed.

Driver installation wasn't bad, though. I laughed at the provided disc, as this is the first mobo I've bought without an ancient IDE port for my old DVD-R drive. Maybe some day flash drives will get cheap enough that we can get drivers on a USB stick. Fortunately, I didn't have to bootstrap my system with LAN drivers as the adapter was functional on first boot. Grabbing the drivers from the ASUS website is easy enough, though I found it odd that the MEI drivers weren't included with the utility suite.

In all, a smooth setup. I'm not an absolute optimum performance guy, so overclocking with provided utilities was a breeze. Finished up in less time than I anticipated.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat mobo!

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Has all the bells and whistles I needed for my rig.

Cons: The booklet was wrong when telling me what slot to put the 2 sticks of ram in to get to a post. It said to put the ram in the grey slots. But that didn't work. So after testing it in the black slots I got it to post. For that -1. But still a good board.

Other Thoughts: Does what it's needed. And Asus has the best boards on the market.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: No problems at all, BIOS is easy to configure. I don't use most of the included software stuff, really no need for it so far.

Cons: Nothing so far.
