5 out of 5 eggsWorking well for over a year

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This board accepted my cheap RAM from my previous HP desktop even though it wasn't listed as acceptable RAM in the manual. Later, I upped the RAM to ADATA 16GB after 6 months of ownership and the motherboard runs great still. When I built this PC I installed the full version of Windows 8.1 without a problem. This motherboard has gotten a lot of use since I've had it and no hiccups yet.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I like the colors. I also like the BIOS layout, the EZ Update, and the AI Suite 3 for managing everything.

3 out of 5 eggsAsus Quality Control leaves something to be desired

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Easy to use UEFI
Works with many M.2 SSDs
Lots of overclocking options

Cons: Reliability concerns, I've had 3 failed motherboards, including 2 DOA

Other Thoughts: The retail version of this board worked OK, but the CPU and POWER fan headers didn't work, it would only run the fans at fixed speed of 1/2 speed, leading to overheating of my i4790k. After several rounds of back-and-forth with Asus, they approved an RMA, but they wouldn't do 'advanced replacement' since no Z-97a boards where in stock at the time. Ultimately it took several weeks to get the replacement. The new board was DOA. I immediately shipped it back and got another board (via advanced replacement this time) the 2nd replacement board was also DOA. In the meantime, I bought an ASRock Extreme/6 motherboard which worked perfectly out of the box.

1 out of 5 eggsBad piece of equipment

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: none

Cons: This board will not let me Install an OS. I bought this and sat on it for a couple of months then when I tried to install Win 8 on it in preparation for the Win 10 upgrade I was unable to get it to install. It would always install smoothly up to the point where "Getting Started" showed up on the screen. At that point it shuts down and you have to return to step one adn try again. I bought and installed a second new PSU, put in known good RAM, tried a second new Samsung SSD and then ran it off the on-board video, nothing worked and I always get to the exact same point in the Windows installation. I even tried two different ISOs of Windows just in case the first had gotten corrupted.

Other Thoughts: After about of week of email tag and installing new RAM, new PSU and removing Video Card to run the system off the onboard video I got an RMA to return the board. Spent $18 to ship it to Asus. After almost 4 weeks I got the exact same board back in a plain white box without a word of explanation of any kind.. Reinstalled it yesterday and I am at the same point I always was. I have bought Asus forever and never had a problem up to now. That's good because their customer service is terrible. Next time I will be sure to try the install immediately so I can return it to Newegg if it is a piece of junk.

1 out of 5 eggsMy First Asus Failure

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: It looks nice.

Cons: Will not let me Install an OS. I bought and installed a second new PSU, put in known good RAM and ran it off the on-board video, nothing worked and I always get to the exact same point in the Windows installation. I even tried two different ISOs of Windows just in case the first had gotten corrupted.

Other Thoughts: I contacted Asus and after trying everything they asked finally got an RMA number. Spent $18 on return costs and about 4 weeks later I got the same board back in a plain white box with no explanation of any kind. Not a word of any kind. I put it back into the beautiful new Corsair case and tried it all over again. I am still getting the exact same result. Can anyone suggest another brand? I have bought probably a dozen Asus boards for my own use and am unfamiliar with the other brands. If what I got from Asus is a fair sample of their customer service and their commitment to customer satisfaction I guess it is time to move on to someone else for my hardware.

5 out of 5 eggsreally a great motherboard

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: I love the fan control that this motherboard has, along with the number of fan headers! the bios fan control is decent, Fan xpert 3 is great and helps you get started. the real magic is that it gives you 100% PWM AND/OR DC voltage control allowing you to have full control of any fan that you plug into the motherboard (3pin or 4)

VRM and all other mobo components stay nice and cool even when stress testing CPU and GPU for 8+ hours

Great bios and instruction manual that helps explain as well as lists defaults

this is completely subjective but I really like the way that this motherboard looks. I'm not one for matching color schemes and such so it has to look good on its own and I feel like this does

Cons: Directkey would be nice but it does not seem to work for me if my pc is frozen, only if it is working in a normal state. 99% of the time I want to reset my pc it is frozen so this did me no good at all unfortunately. really no big loss as I didnt even know it was a feature until 6 months of use.

Since I built my pc I've become a cable management snob and I really wish that the usb 3.0 was right angle so the connector was parallel with the motherboard. Now I have to look at it or not have it plugged in and I'm not crazy about either but that feels petty.

Other Thoughts: owned since february 2015 and have had no problems with it, what so ever. I run a i7 4790k at 4.8GHz 24/7 on this board and even go as high as 5.0GHz without a single motherboard issue.

clearances have allowed me to install the following coolers with no problems
-Coolermaster Hyper 212 evo
-Noctua NH-D14
-Raijintek Triton AIO watercooler

4 out of 5 eggsNo issues, good value

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: (Almost) Everything worked fine with the board on my first try. I attribute that to reading the manual thoroughly. The bios interface is very nice. It's a pretty good value for what you get. Have been using it for 2 months now with no issues.

Cons: The motherboard was not quite as rigid as I would have liked, like once I had it scrwed into the case, plugging in the front panel audio would cause a noticeable flex in the board. The io shield you install on the case is pretty bad. It's like twice the thickness of tin foil, bent it slightly just trying to install into the case even though I was trying to be careful.

Some minor quirks like the front panel audio connector didn't work with my case until I switched HD audio off. This most likely an issue with the case though. On first boot up with the graphics card, you have to plug in your video to the graphics card, the motherboard video connectors won't work. I found this out because I tested it first without the graphics card (motherboard hdmi) and after installing the graphics card, motherboard hdmi no longer worked on initial boot up.

1 out of 5 eggsGot Unlucky

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: First off I'd just like to say that Newegg refunded me for my defective motherboard which I was quite happy about. I decided to buy a MSI Gaming 7 which had been working beautifully so far.

Cons: The felt extremely flimsy and seemed to be quite cheaply made, which I didn't expect because ASUS usually makes really good products.

The board also game defective, it would not post no matter what I tried always giving me a MEMOK error. I tried numerous different compatible memories and it didn't work. I also checked all other possibilities and still nothing.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Danny,

I am sorry that you received a defective motherboard, and appreciate the time you put on reviewing our products. It looks like you already got your issue taken care of.
