3 out of 5 eggsWorks fine now, but horrible tech support

Pros: It works!
Came packaged well and undamaged.
Very helpful owner's manual.

Cons: Awful awful tech support!

Other Thoughts: I want to share my experience with this MOBO, so that other people can learn from it. I purchased this MOBO as part of my first PC build.. Before purchasing it, I read a lot of reviews that complained about ASUS's customer service. I disregarded these because I saw ASUS techs commenting on the reviews trying to help. After all, ASUS has a great reputation! Unfortunately, the reviews are correct. After installing it, I had issues with the B1 and B2 RAM slots not working. The PC would not boot when a RAM stick was installed in either slot. I checked the RAM, and it was compatible and good. The PC worked fine when the RAM was in A1 or A2. I was at a loss of what to do, and I was worried that I may have to RMA the entire MOBO and take my entire PC apart, so I entered into an online chat session with ASUS tech support. What a waste of time! The tech didn't seem to know anymore than I did. After, updating the BIOS (a step that I suggested, not him), he disconnected even though I told him that the problem was not fixed and that I wanted his input on how to continue troubleshooting the problem. This is the main reason I was dissatisfied. After doing a lot of research on my own (no thanks to ASUS), I tried reseating the CPU and the heatsink, and lo and behold it works fine now. I am satisfied with the product, but I am upset by a company that does not stand by their product. I can't imagine the hell I would have to go through to RMA this thing if it came to that.

5 out of 5 eggsFeature rich. Built and packaged well

Pros: This mobo is rich with features. No need to restate them all here, but they are all 'pros'.

I appreciate the depth of support for fans. Not just the CPU fan, but there are headers for lots of case fans too. And they can each have custom profiles set to achieve the right balance between noise and airflow as needed relative to operating conditions.

Cons: I hesitate to mention this as a con, but I will say I'm concerned about how hot the chipset gets, especially considering I'm not doing any overclocking and my airflow is excellent.

It may not be an issue, but considering how much support for overclocking is included, I thought I'd mention it because an overclocker could find themselves limited by an overheated chipset.

Other Thoughts: Using this as part of an all new system that includes the following:
~Fractal Designs Define R4 "blackout edition" case
~Antec HCG 750 PSU
~Asus Z97-A mobo
~Intel i5-4690 CPU
~Deepcool Frostwin V2 cooler
~Arctic MX-4 thermal paste
~G.Skill Sniper 1866 CL9 DDR3 RAM
~XFX R9-280A "DD" GPU

This whole system went together flawlessly. There were no clearance issues or difficulties of any type. The system is completely stable, even when under full load.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat board for the Price!

Pros: Great all around motherboard, which has more than enough of what I was looking for in a somewhat future-proof (or at least an easily up-gradable) mid-range gaming rig.

First off, I love the UEFI BIOS. If you're a newbie with a first time build, it very easy to just turn on XMP profile or have the UEFI automatically mildly overclock your board for better performance (or conversely turn everything down for less power consumption). There is an advance mode with all of the option you'd expect from a Z97 chipset, and it had no problem OCing my Devil's Canyon i5 4690K from 3.5GHz up to a cool and stable 4.0GHz, and I haven't finished pushing that envelope yet. Also enabling my OC'd ram was as simple as enabling XMP profiles and took only a few seconds.

If you're looking to build something now with an eye to the future for a reasonable price, this is a good bet. It does have support for both M2 and SATA Express, which are looking to become the next standard after SATA 6Gb. Also this board has the Z97 chipset, which means out of the box support for the Haswell Refresh CPU's (the so called Devil's Canyon set of unlocked i5 4690K and i7 4790K), but also compatibility with the upcoming Intel 5th generation Broadwell based CPU's. So you can get a good CPU and SSD now, and easily upgrade to the next standard as they are released and become more widely available.

Beyond that, it has more than enough DIMM slots for anything but the most enthusiast user, and even then this can still support a hefty SLI setup. It also has a USB 3.0 header as well, because if you're going to spend this much on a mobo, you're case should have front mounted USB 3.0 ports.

I have mine inside a Corsair Carbide series Air 540, and the fan controls on the motherboard work really well. It spins all the fans up to max at startup, and then they all wind down to whisper quiet (I'm still only using the three Corsair AF140L fans the case came with, plus another two SP120L fans that came with my Corsair H100i liquid CPU cooler). Except under really heavy load, I can barely hear the system, and it sits all of two feet away from me.

The added software is nice, especially the Ai Charger that can greatly help speed up the charging of devices plugged into the USB 3.0 ports. Also their software suite can automatically test for, and systematically overclock your whole system on it's own. It's not as efficient as a manual overclock, but it is a lot faster; and it is an excellent way to quickly ballpark just what your system is capable of (if their software suite can hit 4.7GHz on your i7 4680K, it's a safe bet you got lucky with a good OC friendly CPU).

Overall, very happy with my purchase so far.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a relatively inexpensive motherboard for a ~$1500 gaming rig, with both an eye to the future and one of the most well respected and reliable names in the market; you really con't go wrong with the ASUS Z97-A!

1 out of 5 eggsWORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!

Pros: The board worked to expectations for about a month and a half until it completely died

Cons: The board died in the worst way, where I couldn't even access the BIOS. It is completely useless after only 90 or so days, but that's not even the worst part.

This board comes with a 3 year manufacturers warranty wich is great in theory, but is also practically useless because ASUS customer service is the WORST I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH!

It took me about 2 phone calls to complete the required steps confirming the board as the faulty component and that was about 2 weeks ago where they told me my RMA forms will be in my inbox in 2 hours. Tell me why 4 phone calls later and 2 WEEKS( each one on hold for at least 45 min, hung up on twice) I still haven't received them. As I type, I have been on hold for 43 min ...

Do not buy ASUS if you have a slight fear that your product might fail one you!! You will never get your replacement!

1 out of 5 eggsPartially working

Pros: Price?

Cons: 1. Calmed to have 2 PCIE 3.0 x16 port. The second one turned out to be defective. My new GTX 770 from this same Asus gets only x8 instead of x16 on this port and keep losing signal. The symptoms is gone when moving the card to the first PCIE 3.0 port.

2. No boot menu hotkey. Whenever you want to boot from a USB flash drive or any removable device, you HAVE TO go into BIOS and modify boot sequence. AND DO IT AGAIN AFTERWARDS if you have two hard drive. Otherwise the boot sequence between the hard drives can be messed up after you remove the USB flash drive. I could not believe there is still motherboard this stupid in 2014!

3 out of 5 eggsM2.0 Compatibility Issues

Pros: Great board for the price. cool features. awesome BIOS

Cons: M2.0 compatibility issues with Intel 530 series M2.0

1 out of 5 eggsBoard DoA, fairly disappointed

Pros: None. Motherboard died as soon as it was powered on.

Cons: Didn't even post, got about 3 spins out of each fan before it died and would not power on after that.

Other Thoughts: Was pretty excited about this motherboard. Very disappointed when it would not function whatsoever when I installed it.

Purchased the Extended Warrenty but had to ship it to America(I live in Canada), Had to pay for the shipping myself. was offered reimbursement up to $15 dollars, but we all know shipping a package like that from CA to US costs more(Was $35 and change).

Been waiting almost a week now so will hopefully get my credit soon. Will likely purchase a different motherboard, as I do not want to risk this happening again.

4 out of 5 eggsDescent Board

Pros: Full size, 4 sdram slots, displayport, SLI ready, great bios, easy to install. Generally great board for the money. Well architect-ed. Installed without issue and booted as expected. Fast also.

Cons: Driver disk was riddled with after market software I did not want. Be careful to read the options or you will end up with software you may not have needed. Also even when selecting the no-software option, only a few drivers loaded. I had to work harder than I expected to obtain drivers for Windows 8.1 and this board.

Other Thoughts: I have built 500 plus PCs. Drivers are always an important part of the build. Since ASUS decided to play around with the drivers disk, I just ordered a Gigabyte board instead. Maybe Gigabyte will do the same thing... I'll know shortly, but it did keep me from buying another ASUS.
