5 out of 5 eggsGreat UI

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This motherboard has a great number of options on it. Not to mention it's BIOS is phenomenal. If you are looking to build a high class computer get this.

Cons: CHECK THE MANUAL! don't buy RAM until you know it's compatible (PCPartPicker misses this). My 2 4GB sticks of RipJaw were not compatible. Not the motherboards fault.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus Z97-A

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: 6 fan pins, looks really clean, plenty of bios options, SLI and Crossfire, sturdy, 90 degree sata connectors, pins seem to be positioned in good spots for fans, usbs, etc. Loads of ram options.

Cons: Ram slot finicky. Sort of. See other thoughts.

For some reason, I'm getting higher firemark scored with my 750ti on my previous micro h81m-p33 than with this full size z97. Weird. Probably user error though.

1 out of 5 eggsSupport poor

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Motherboard is a decent basic board. Has all the basic options a builder neds.

Cons: Asus support is really bad. Bought memory off their "Vendor Approved List". Started out with 2-4 Gig modules. Tried expanding to 4-4 Gig modules of the same part number. PC will no longer boot. Returned motherboard to ASUS. They sent me back the same board with no changes done or even notes about testing.

Other Thoughts: If you buy one, assume no actual warranty. Returning it to ASUS does no good. Save yourself a month of worthless emails and shipping costs returning the part. Just buy a new one of another brand.

4 out of 5 eggsFastest build ever

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Quick build. Took no more than 30 minutes to move parts, and replace the bother board. Installation and plugins were easy to handle.
BIOS started up fast, and has your standard UEFI interface for the new z79 chipset. I put two other iterations of this board in 2 other systems that are also running flawlessly.

Specs:
i7 4970k
16 GB of DDR 1600 Mixed set
MSI 980 GT Twin Frozr V series

Cons: Big board. Not really a con but, realize you will take up all the space in your full or midtower with this board. Hard drives and wires may need moved around.

Heatsinks around the northbridge seemed a bit flimsy, I like having something to grab onto, and while I am careful, the heatsinks on the northbridge wobbled slightly during install.

Screws and speaker. My case mfg did not include a build in speaker so I require an external speaker to get beep codes, which would be nice to see included with the motherboard, as well as extra screws and mounts for mounting the motherboard.

The mfg assumes you have the screws already and were it not for a previous system build that had spare screws, I would have had to have gone out and bought a separate set.

Other Thoughts: This is a great board for the sock 1150 CPUs and newer graphics cards. Nothing out of the ordinary on this board. Nothing spectacular either. I would put it in the medium-high range of boards but not the top in its class. Of course, its affordable and does what you need it to. Can't ask for much more than that. All around give it a 4/5 due to some annoyances in the cons.

3 out of 5 eggsOkay Mobo

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: The motherboard is good for the price. I haven't had any issues with it lately and the BIOS seems to be pretty stable and easy to work with/ find things.

Cons: I thought people were exaggerating when they said the onboard NIC was garbage and they weren't. The I noticed that its throughput is worse than the onboard NIC from my 4 year old computer.

I noticed in the BIOS that it doesn't forget previous OS installations. For example I installed Linux on to my SSD, then formatted it after a month or so and put Windows on it; the BIOS still displays it as a Linux partition. I could probably refresh this somehow but it isn't impacting anything so I have not tried to.

Other Thoughts: Looks pretty slick.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Memory

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: None

Cons: Slots 3 and 4 not working. 1 and 2 work fine with all 4 RAM. Checked cooler to see if it was tight on 1 side. RAM was on accepted list. B channel dead on arrival.

Other Thoughts: Very frustrating.

1 out of 5 eggsSo very, very disappointed.

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: It's a very attractive board, and I love that it is a true ATX sized board (9-screw holes).

Cons: With the Asus Z97-A board, I never even got started with trying to overclock it, because there were so many other quirks that I couldn't get past.

The DVI graphics port suddenly stopped sending anything to the monitor for some reason, so I had to pull another monitor out of the closet with a VGA connector and hook that up in order to keep working with it. Later on the DVI port miraculously decided to start working again.

Whenever I tried to insert my wireless adapter card, I'd quickly get a bsod. I tried everything to work around that in order to get my wireless going, but it just wasn't going to happen. Interestingly enough, it's an Asus brand b/g/n wireless adapter, and yet, it won't work with the Asus Z97-A board.

I've previously used the adapter on another system with an Asus M5A97-LE R20 board and never had any problems.

I was unable to connect my external hard drive, because whenever I did, it might access it ok at first, but when I would restart, the system would stutter and hang and freeze, and sometimes blue screen.

I went into the bios and checked and double checked and triple checked to be positive that nothing in the boot priority and hard drive sequence was causing a problem. I had the external drive basically disable everywhere in bios. It didn't matter though. The computer just went crazy whenever I connected the external drive.

I updated the board with every relevant driver from the Asus website. I flashed the bios and pretty much everything that I could do. I even did a complete reformat, again, to try and see if there was anything I could do to try and straighten it out.

I eventually called Asus tech support and was on there with someone for nearly an hour. While going through some steps he led me through, I uninstalled the USB driver... and on rebooting, the computer would not install anything to get the keyboard and mouse going again. I had to go rummage around in my parts and find an old mouse with a PS/2 connector that the board would recognize in order to continue working on it.

It was just a major pain in the neck in every regard.

Other Thoughts: I really, really, really wanted to get this Asus board straightened out. I've had good luck with the brand in the past, and I was excited to get started on using their new overclocking tools which are supposed to make OC'n a breeze. Ugh... SO disappointing.

I have RMA'd the board already and am currently deciding what else to order.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat mobo for a gaming PC

This review is from: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: This is a great motherboard for a gaming PC (especially if you like to tweak and fine tune performance.) I have this paired with an i7 4970K and I was easily able to get a stable overclock on my CPU and RAM. Everything in the box was nice and neat, no bent pins on the board, and the included software from ASUS is great.

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: Be sure to update your BIOS as soon as you can to ensure the maximum compatibility with your hardware.
